Dubai in May is hot but easy to plan: days of 38-42°C, nights around 28°C and a sea of about 30°C. It is the last month of the sunrise balloon season, the last weeks of Miracle Garden (scheduled to close on 31 May this season) and the start of lower hotel rates. Start early, spend 11 AM to 4 PM indoors and get back outside at sunset, ideally on a shared yacht hour from $32. This guide covers the weather, hotels, what is open and Eid Al Adha.

Six ways to use a May day
#1
The Marina sunset hour
The one-hour shared cruise from $32 is the easiest cool-down of a May day. Pick the departure closest to sunset, around 7 PM, and the Marina, JBR and Ain Dubai turn gold while the heat eases. Check in 20 minutes early, carry a passport or Emirates ID and expect to take your shoes off before boarding.
#2
Sunrise balloon, last regular month
May is the last month of the regular balloon season. The flight is $275 per person with hotel pickup, 40-70 minutes in the air and a Bedouin-style breakfast, and it is over before the heat builds. Flights depend on the weather on the morning, and a 30% deposit holds the basket.
#3
Evening desert safari
From $45 per person with hotel pickup and no prepayment. The 4x4 and the camp tents are air-conditioned, the dunes are for sunset photos and the evening is a BBQ buffet with a fire show, Tanoura and belly dance. Do not expect to sit outside on the sand for hours in May.
#4
Abu Dhabi before the heat
The 9-hour city tour from $45 puts the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque first, before the sun is high, then the BAPS Mandir, the Corniche and Heritage Village. Abu Dhabi runs 2-3 degrees hotter than Dubai, so wear loose clothes that meet the mosque dress code and drink the water provided.
#5
The indoor afternoon
Ski Dubai at Mall of the Emirates, the aquarium and shops at The Dubai Mall, or the Green Planet at City Walk fill the hottest hours. Walking into the malls is free and the Metro serves both, but attraction tickets are paid and change often, so check the official sites before you go.
#6
Miracle Garden's last weeks
The garden is scheduled to run until 31 May this season. Go after 5 PM, because the paths have little shade and the afternoon is 38-42°C. Adults were about AED 100 at the start of the season, and the official site, dubaimiraclegarden.com, has the current prices and hours.
Dubai in May: the short answer
Dubai in May is hot, dry and good value. Typical daytime highs are 38-42°C, nights hold at 27-29°C, the sea is about 30°C and rain is almost unknown. The sun rises at about 5:40 AM and sets between roughly 6:50 and 7:05 PM, so the days are long and bright, and the month is the run-up to the real summer of June to September.
It suits you if you want lower prices, shorter queues and a plan built around early mornings and evenings. It does not suit a long walking day at noon. The first week of May still feels like a hot April; by the last week the afternoons are summer afternoons. If you can choose, the month-by-month guide shows how May sits between April and June.
A May day by the clock
Heat decides the order of the day. This is the pattern that works.
| Time | How it feels | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 6-9 AM | Warm and bright; the coolest hours | Beach, Marina Walk, the abra across the Creek (about AED 1-2) or the 8:00 AM Abu Dhabi pickup |
| 9-11 AM | Hot and rising | The last outdoor stops: souks, Old Dubai lanes, a photo spot |
| 11 AM-4 PM | Very hot, 38-42°C, harsh sun | Indoors: The Dubai Mall, Ski Dubai, an aquarium, or your hotel pool in the shade |
| 4-6 PM | Still hot, the sun getting lower | Pool, a late lunch, or a Burj Khalifa slot to see the city before sunset |
| 6:50-7:05 PM | Sunset; the air eases | On the water: the shared yacht hour on the Marina |
| After dark | Warm, about 30-33°C | The Dubai Fountain (every 30 minutes from about 6 PM), dinner on a terrace or a desert camp evening |
Sunset moves by about 15 minutes over the month. Temperatures are typical bands, not forecasts.
The sea at about 30°C is pleasant rather than cooling, and by midday the sand is too hot to cross barefoot. Swim early or after 5 PM, at beaches with lifeguards.
Hotels in May: cheaper than winter, with one spike
May is the start of low season, so hotels cost less than from December to March, and rates tend to fall further as the month goes on. Beach resorts that are out of reach in winter often come within budget. The saving is on the room, not on the days out, and the first days of May can still carry spring prices, so compare dates before you book.
The spike is Eid Al Adha. It moves about 11 days earlier each year and is expected around 16 or 17 May in 2027, subject to the moon sighting (Emirates Astronomical Society). Those nights fill hotels, beaches and malls. Hotels also charge a per-room, per-night tourism dirham fee that is not always in the headline price. Four questions are worth asking before you pay:
- Is the pool shaded and chilled? Many hotels cool their pools in summer, and it changes the afternoon.
- How far is the beach, and is there a shuttle? In May a ten-minute walk to the sand is a long way at noon.
- Is breakfast included? It saves a stop on an 8:00 AM start.
- Is a Metro station or a taxi rank close? The Red Line stations and trains are air-conditioned.
Choose for the pool and the transport first and the view second; the area matters less in May because you will mostly be inside.
What is open in May, and what has closed
The winter attractions end their seasons around now, so dates matter more in May than in any other month. The table uses the dates published for this season; they change every year, so check the official site before you plan around one.
| Place | In May | Our advice |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai Miracle Garden | Scheduled to run daily until 31 May this season; 9 AM to 9 PM on weekdays, to 11 PM at weekends (Gulf News) | Go after 5 PM; there is little shade. Adults were about AED 100 at the start of the season. |
| Global Village | Scheduled to run until May; no closing date had been published as of 29 October 2026 | It opens at 4 PM, which suits May. Tickets were AED 25 on weekdays and AED 30 at weekends this season (Khaleej Times). |
| Dubai Safari Park | Usually closes for the summer; check dubaisafari.ae for the last day | If it is still open, go at opening. |
| Water parks | Open | Go at opening, when queues are short. |
| Malls, Ski Dubai, aquariums | Open and air-conditioned | The default afternoon. |
| Museum of the Future | Temporarily closed since 1 September 2026; reopening was reported for early 2027, with no confirmed date | Check whether it has reopened before you plan around it. |
Seasonal places announce their dates each year. Check the official sites before you go.
More detail: Global Village, Miracle Garden and the Museum of the Future. For the cool hours, the water parks are the best outdoor plan.
Eid Al Adha and the quiet weeks
Outside the holiday, May is one of the quietest months since winter: shorter queues, easier restaurant tables and more choice of tour slots. The Eid days are the exception. Expect busier beaches, malls and roads, full restaurants in the evening and fewer free slots, so book the limited-place things first.
For us that means the sunrise balloon, whose baskets sell out one to two weeks ahead and earlier around Eid, and the Marina yacht hour, whose hourly departures need full prepayment. The desert safari and the Abu Dhabi day are agreed on WhatsApp with no prepayment, so they can wait. The Ramadan 2027 dates guide has the Eid calendar.
Four tours that suit May
The shared Marina yacht hour is the best use of a May evening. It is from $32 per person for one hour on a premium yacht, past Dubai Marina, JBR and Bluewaters, with a photo stop in front of Ain Dubai and chilled bottled water on board. Departures are hourly, so choose the one closest to sunset, when the heat finally eases. Meet at Level P of Al Majara Tower, check in 20 minutes before, and take your shoes off to board. Full prepayment secures the slot. Details are on the shared yacht tour page, and the sunset cruise guide has the times by month.
The sunrise balloon is in its last regular month. It is from $275 per person, 4-5 hours door to door, with a pre-dawn pickup, a 40-70 minute flight and a Bedouin-style breakfast. May dawns are warm, so a light layer is enough. A 30% deposit confirms the flight, and a flight cancelled for weather gets a full refund or a new date. See the sunrise balloon and the balloon season guide.
The full-day desert safari is from $45 per person ($65 with the quad bike): 7 hours, hotel pickup in an air-conditioned 4x4 and a camp with air-conditioned tents, a BBQ buffet and unlimited drinks. In May you stand on the sand mainly for the sunset. There is no prepayment. Book the full-day desert safari; if you want hours on the dunes in cool air, wait for winter.
The Abu Dhabi day starts with an 8:00 AM hotel pickup, so the Grand Mosque stop comes before the midday sun. It is from $45 shared, 9 hours, with no prepayment. Abu Dhabi is 2-3 degrees hotter than Dubai, and the mosque needs covered shoulders and knees (men) or covered ankles, wrists and a headscarf (women). See the Abu Dhabi City Tour.
What to pack and how to handle the heat
Heat illness is the one thing that spoils a May trip, and it is easy to avoid. The packing list is short:
- Light cotton or linen, a hat, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen, reapplied after swimming.
- A refillable bottle and the habit of drinking before you are thirsty; bottled water is cheap everywhere.
- Closed, flat shoes for hot pavements and sand; sandals for the beach only.
- A light layer for shops, the Metro and restaurants: indoor air conditioning is set for people coming in from 40°C.
- Covered shoulders and knees for malls, mosques and the Abu Dhabi day.
Dizziness, a pounding headache, nausea or confusion mean stop, get into air conditioning, drink and rest. The UAE ambulance number is 998 if someone is faint or confused. Children and older travellers feel the heat first, so plan their day around the shade.
FAQ
How hot is Dubai in May?
Typical daytime highs are 38-42°C, with hotter days possible, and nights stay around 27-29°C. The sea is about 30°C and rain is almost unknown. The comfortable hours are early morning and the hour after sunset (about 6:50-7:05 PM), so start sightseeing early and spend 11 AM to 4 PM indoors.
Is May a good time to visit Dubai?
Yes, if you accept the heat. Hotels cost less than in winter, queues are shorter and the evening tours, such as the Marina yacht hour from $32 and the desert safari from $45, run as normal. It is not the month for long outdoor days, and the days around Eid Al Adha, expected on 16 or 17 May in 2027, are busy.
Are hotels cheaper in May?
Usually yes. May is the start of low season and rates tend to fall as the month goes on, apart from the Eid Al Adha days. Compare dates, ask whether the pool is chilled, and remember that the per-night tourism dirham fee is often added to the price shown.
Are Miracle Garden and Global Village open in May?
Both are scheduled to run to the end of their seasons. This season Miracle Garden is scheduled to close on 31 May, and Global Village runs until May with no exact date published as of 29 October 2026. Dates change every year, so check the official sites before you plan around them.
When is Eid Al Adha in 2027?
Expected around 16 or 17 May, subject to the official moon sighting, according to the Emirates Astronomical Society. Eid moves about 11 days earlier every year. Expect a public holiday, busy beaches and malls, and higher hotel rates for those nights.
Does the hot air balloon fly in May?
Yes. May is the last month of the regular season, which runs roughly from September or October to May. The flight is $275 per person and a 30% deposit confirms it. The pilots decide on the morning, and a cancelled flight gets a full refund or a new date.
Can I swim in the sea in May?
Yes. The sea is about 30°C, warm rather than refreshing. Swim before 10 AM or after 5 PM at a beach with lifeguards, because the midday sun and the hot sand are the problem, not the water.
