Sunrise Hot Air Balloon in Dubai — From $275 per person

The sunrise balloon over the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve flies in the cooler months, roughly from September or October to May, and the sweet spot is November to March: 14-20°C at dawn, clear skies most mornings and sunrise at a civilised 6:30-7:05 AM. Summer flights depend on the weather, so check with us before you plan around one. Wind is the one thing that grounds a flight; the pilots decide on the morning, and a cancelled flight is refunded in full or moved to a new date. Here is what each month means for the $275 flight, and how to plan so a windy dawn costs you nothing.

Tour on this route: Sunrise Hot Air Balloon in Dubai — From $275 per person, 4-5 hours.

What is the best time of year for a hot air balloon ride in Dubai?

November to March. Dawn is 14-20°C, the air is clear and sunrise comes at about 6:30-7:05 AM, so the pre-dawn pickup is the latest of the year. The season as a whole runs roughly from September or October to May; summer flights depend on the weather. The flight is $275 per person with hotel pickup, a 40-70 minute flight and breakfast at a Bedouin camp.

The year in four seasons, from the basket

November to February #1
Peak season Cold dawns, clear air, the latest alarm

November to February

The months the flight was made for. Overnight lows of 14-20°C mean a properly cold take-off site and a warm basket once the burner runs, the air is at its clearest and sunrise comes late, about 6:45-7:05 AM, so the alarm is the kindest of the year. It is also the busiest: the baskets sell out one to two weeks ahead, longer around the last two weeks of December.

March to May #2
Late season Mild mornings, easier availability, earlier pickups

March to May

Still firmly in season. March keeps the winter feel; April and May bring 30-38°C afternoons, but the flight is over before the heat arrives and the dawn is mild rather than cold. Sunrise moves from about 6:30 AM in March to about 5:40 AM in May, so the pickup comes earlier each week. Availability is easier than in the winter rush.

September and October #3
The season opens The first flights after summer

September and October

Flights resume as the summer humidity breaks; the exact restart depends on the weather, so check with us before you build a September morning around it. October is a genuine option: 30-38°C by day, the dawn the coolest hour, sunrise at about 6:25 AM. Early autumn is usually the easiest time to find a basket at short notice.

June to August #4
Summer Only when the weather allows

June to August

Days of 38-45°C, nights above 30°C and, from July, the humidity. Some summer mornings are flyable and many are not, and the decision belongs to the pilots, so we never promise a summer date without checking first. If the balloon is off, the desert safari with its air-conditioned camp and the 9 PM yacht party run right through the summer.

When does the hot air balloon fly in Dubai?

The short answer: roughly from September or October to May, at sunrise, with November to March as the best stretch. Dubai's balloons fly in the cooler months because a balloon wants still, dense morning air and a crew that can inflate, launch and land before the desert heats up. In summer the mornings are hot, humid and less predictable, so flights are decided day by day. If you are here in June, July or August, check with us before you plan around one.

Our sunrise balloon flight is $275 per person for the whole morning: pre-dawn pickup from any hotel in Dubai city, 40-70 minutes in the air at 2,000-4,000 feet over the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, then a vintage Land Rover or SUV to a private Bedouin camp for a gourmet breakfast, a short camel ride, a falcon photo and the drive back, 4-5 hours door to door. What changes through the year is not the programme but the alarm clock, the temperature at the take-off site and the odds of the wind saying no.

The rest of this guide is the calendar in detail: sunrise and dawn temperature by month, how the wind decision is made, what a cancellation gives you back, how to plan a trip so a grounded morning can be moved rather than lost, and what to do with the rest of the day in each season.

Month by month: sunrise time, dawn temperature and flying odds

Sunrise moves by an hour and a half across the year, and your pickup moves with it. The times below are approximate for mid-month; we confirm the exact pickup time on WhatsApp the day before the flight, and it is always dark when the car arrives, because the inflation and the pilots' briefing happen before first light.

Overnight temperatures are the city's seasonal figures; the open desert at dawn is usually a few degrees cooler and there is a breeze on the ground before take-off. Sunrise times are rounded to five minutes; check the exact time for your date.

Two things stand out from the table. First, the winter months give you the coldest dawn but also the latest sunrise, so the trade-off is a warm jacket in exchange for a 5 AM alarm instead of a 3:30 AM one. Second, the flight itself does not change: 40-70 minutes at 2,000-4,000 feet, the reserve's gazelles, oryx and camels below, the Hajar Mountains on the horizon, in every month it operates.

How cold is it at dawn? The numbers behind "chilly"

From November to March the city's overnight low sits at 14-20°C, with January the coldest, and the desert is colder still: sand loses its heat quickly after dark, and the take-off site is open ground with a breeze. Standing there at 5:30 AM in February while the envelopes inflate feels like a cold morning at home rather than anything you associate with Dubai.

The basket is a different climate. A balloon moves with the wind, so there is no draught once you are airborne, and the burner above your head throws real heat every time it fires. Most guests peel a layer off within ten minutes of lift-off and put it back on for the landing and the walk to the 4x4. By the time you sit down to breakfast at the camp the sun is up and the day is heading for 20-30°C.

The rule is layers you can remove: a T-shirt, a fleece or jumper, a light jacket, long trousers and closed shoes for the sand. The full list, month by month, is in what to wear for the Dubai balloon. In April, May and October the same logic applies with one layer fewer; the dawn is mild, and by the camel ride you want sunglasses more than a jacket.

Wind: why a flight is cancelled and what you get back

Wind is the reason balloons stay on the ground. A balloon has no steering; the pilot changes altitude to find air moving in a useful direction, and a launch needs calm surface wind and clear visibility. The GCAA-licensed pilots make the go or no-go decision on the morning itself, from the readings at the site, and it is sometimes made after the pickup, with the balloons already laid out. That is not indecision; it is the pilots waiting for the freshest information before committing a dozen guests to the sky.

If your flight is cancelled you get a full refund or a new date, your choice, with nothing lost on the 30% deposit. The flight length also flexes with the conditions: 40-70 minutes is the range, and a brisker breeze aloft means a faster, shorter flight rather than a longer one. Rare showers between December and March count as a no-fly dawn too, and morning haze or blowing dust can ground a flight for visibility even when the wind is light.

  • Cancelled before pickup: we tell you on WhatsApp as soon as we know; you go back to sleep and we offer the next available morning or the refund.
  • Cancelled at the site: you are driven back to the hotel; the refund or rebooking is exactly the same.
  • Shortened by wind: a 40-minute flight is a complete flight, and the breakfast, camel ride, falcon photo and flight certificate all run as normal.
  • Your own change of plan: tell us as early as you can and we will look for another date; the baskets are shared, so late changes are harder to place.

Planning around the weather: give the flight a spare morning

The single most useful piece of advice we give balloon guests: fly early in your trip. Put the balloon on your first or second full morning, not the last one, so that a windy dawn can be moved to another date instead of refunded. In winter the baskets sell out one to two weeks ahead, and earlier for Valentine's week, Eid and the last two weeks of December, so the rebooked date is rarely the very next morning.

Booking works like this: you send us your dates on WhatsApp, we hold the basket and a 30% deposit confirms it, with the balance paid later. If the weather cancels, the deposit is refunded or carried to the new date. It is the only one of our tours booked with a deposit, and the one with the longest lead time, which is why it goes into the plan first and the desert safari and Abu Dhabi day, both with no prepayment, are slotted around it.

  • 1. Book the balloon before anything else for that part of the trip, one to two weeks ahead in season.
  • 2. Fly on day 2 or 3 of your stay and keep the last morning free as the fallback.
  • 3. Keep the rest of that day light: you are back at the hotel mid-morning and most guests want a rest before the evening.
  • 4. If the flight moves, the full-day desert safari is the same-day fallback: hotel pickup in the afternoon, no prepayment, from $45.
  • 5. If nothing fits, take the refund; there is no penalty and no argument.

If you are laying out a whole trip, our 5-day itinerary places the balloon on a morning with a spare one behind it, and the free SB AI planner will lay your days out on the map with the balloon, the safari and the yacht in the right order.

Summer: can you fly between June and September?

Sometimes. From May to September Dubai runs at 38-45°C by day and stays above 30°C at night, with heavy humidity from July. Hot air is thin air, which limits how much a balloon can lift, and summer mornings can bring haze and unsettled wind, so flights are decided day by day rather than scheduled with confidence. Our honest answer is check with us for your exact dates and we will tell you what is realistic rather than what sells.

If you are here in the hottest months, treat the balloon as a bonus rather than the anchor of the trip. The desert still works from the ground, because the 7-hour safari runs into the evening and ends at a camp with air-conditioned tents; the water works better still, with the 21+ yacht party at 9 PM for $99 or the 1-hour shared yacht cruise from $32 in the sunset slot. Our summer guide lays out the whole heat-proof week.

September is the month people ask about most, because it is when many families travel. Nights are still above 30°C and humid, and the season restarts when the weather allows rather than on a fixed date. If a September flight matters to you, send us the dates and we will be straight about the odds.

Pairing the balloon with the rest of the day, by season

The flight ends mid-morning with the whole day in front of you, and the best use of it depends on the month. In the cool season the classic pairing is sky at dawn and sand at sunset; in the warm months the afternoon belongs to the hotel pool and the evening to the water.

SeasonMorningRest of the dayWhy it works
November to MarchBalloon at sunrise, $275Full-day desert safari in the afternoon, from $45Both sides of the desert in the cool months; the safari needs no prepayment, so it is booked once the flight is confirmed
April to MayBalloon at sunriseRest, then the shared yacht hour at sunset, from $32The afternoon is hot; the water at sunset is not
September to OctoberBalloon if flyingAbu Dhabi the next day, 8:00 AM pickup, from $45Two early starts back to back, the Grand Mosque before the heat
June to AugustAsk usYacht party at 9 PM, $99The night on the water is the summer answer

For couples the pairing is the balloon followed by a private sunset charter: the Palm lagoon from a 48 ft yacht such as the Orion, from AED 800 per hour for the boat with captain and crew, minimum 2 hours. We cover that day in the most romantic morning in Dubai. If you are still deciding between the sky and the sand, desert safari vs hot air balloon settles it, and best time to visit Dubai month by month puts the balloon season next to the sea temperature, the crowds and the hotel prices.

FAQ

What is the best time of year for a hot air balloon ride in Dubai?

November to March. Dawn is 14-20°C, the air is clear and sunrise comes at about 6:30-7:05 AM, so the pre-dawn pickup is the latest of the year. The season as a whole runs roughly from September or October to May; summer flights depend on the weather. The flight is $275 per person with hotel pickup, a 40-70 minute flight and breakfast at a Bedouin camp.

Does the hot air balloon in Dubai fly in summer?

Only when the weather allows. From June to August Dubai is 38-45°C by day and above 30°C at night, with humidity from July, and hot, hazy or gusty mornings ground the balloons. Check with us for your exact dates; if the flight is not realistic, the evening desert safari and the 9 PM yacht party run all summer.

What happens if my balloon flight is cancelled because of wind?

You choose a full refund or a new date, and the 30% deposit is refunded or carried over. The GCAA-licensed pilots decide on the morning, sometimes at the take-off site with the balloons already laid out. Fly early in your trip so a cancelled dawn can be moved rather than lost.

How cold is it at dawn in the Dubai desert?

Between November and March the city's overnight low is 14-20°C and the open desert is a few degrees cooler, with a breeze at the take-off site. Once you are airborne the burner keeps the basket warm. Dress in layers you can take off, with long trousers and closed shoes for the sand.

What time is the pickup for the sunrise balloon?

Before dawn, and it moves with the season: sunrise is about 7:00 AM in January and about 5:30 AM in June, and the pickup is timed so you reach the site in the dark for the inflation and briefing. We confirm the exact time on WhatsApp the day before. The whole outing is 4-5 hours door to door.

How far in advance should I book the balloon in winter?

One to two weeks ahead between November and March, and earlier around Valentine's Day, Eid and the last two weeks of December, when the baskets fill first. A 30% deposit confirms the flight; the desert safari and Abu Dhabi day can be added later with no prepayment.

Does it rain during the Dubai balloon season?

Rarely. Showers are possible between December and March and usually pass within a morning. A wet or windy dawn is a cancelled flight with a full refund or a new date, which is why we suggest keeping a spare morning in the plan rather than flying on your last day.
