Sunset Yacht Cruise in Dubai Marina: Times by Month, Shared or Private

Dubai Marina Shared Yacht Tour — From $32 per person

There are two ways to be on the water when the sun goes down behind Dubai Marina. The 1-hour shared yacht tour from $32 per person leaves hourly from the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower; book the departure that starts 30-45 minutes before sunset. A private charter from AED 400 per hour gives you the boat, the timing and, with three hours, a swim stop before the light turns gold. Sunset is at about 5:30 PM in December and 7:10 PM in June, and it is the slot that sells out first on both. Here are the times by month, the route, and how to pick between them.

What time is sunset in Dubai Marina?

About 5:30 PM in late November and December, 5:50 PM in January, 6:25 PM in March, 6:55 PM in May, 7:10 PM in June and July, 6:25 PM in September and 5:55 PM in October. Dubai does not change its clocks, so the times repeat every year and move only a few minutes within a month. For the shared cruise, book the departure that starts 30-45 minutes before sunset.

Sunset on the water, five ways

The shared sunset hour #1
From $32 per person, 1 hour, all ages Couples, families, anyone without a group

The shared sunset hour

A premium yacht with a red carpet at the pier, hourly departures and a crew who take the photos: the Marina canal, JBR, Bluewaters and the stop in front of Ain Dubai, with the sun going down over the sea on the way out and the towers lighting up on the way back. Paid in advance, because the sunset departure is the first to go.

A private sunset charter #2
From AED 400 per hour, 2-3 hours, your group only Six or more, proposals, a swim before the sunset

A private sunset charter

The boat to yourselves, the slot of your choosing and your own drinks on deck. Two hours on a 48 ft yacht covers the Marina loop into the golden hour for AED 1,600; three hours adds the Palm lagoon and a swim at anchor before the light turns. Sunset is the most requested slot in the fleet, so it is booked first.

The golden-hour route #3
Canal, JBR, Bluewaters, Ain Dubai, return The photographs the beach cannot give you

The golden-hour route

The sun sets over open sea to the west, so the boat is between it and the city: the towers of JBR and the Marina catch the last light while the wheel on Bluewaters stands against the sky. The one view every land-side sunset spot in Dubai is missing is the skyline lit from the water, and this is it.

Blue hour and the lights #4
The 20-30 minutes after sunset The return leg, the second-best departure

Blue hour and the lights

The Marina switches on as you come back through the canal: reflections on the water, the towers lit from inside, the promenade filling up. If the departure that catches the sunset itself is sold out, the one that leaves at sunset gets this half of the show, which some guests prefer, and it often still has seats when the sunset one is gone.

After dark: the 9 PM party #5
$99 per person, 9 PM-1 AM, strictly 21+ Adults who want the night, not the sunset

After dark: the 9 PM party

Boarding 8:30 PM at the same pier, four hours past Ain Dubai, the Palm and Burj Al Arab with a live DJ, a live BBQ and unlimited soft drinks. It starts well after the sun has gone, so it is not a sunset cruise, but it is the evening most people put after one on a different night of the trip.

The sunset cruise in one paragraph

Book the shared sunset hour if there are one to five of you: from $32 per person, all ages, hourly departures from the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower, check-in 20 minutes early, and the departure that starts 30-45 minutes before sunset is the one to take. Book a private charter if you are six or more, want the Palm and a swim, or want the timing entirely your own: from AED 400 per hour for a 31 ft boat with a 3-hour minimum, from AED 800 per hour for a 48 ft yacht with a 2-hour minimum, sunset being the most requested slot on every boat.

The sun sets at about 5:30 PM in December and about 7:10 PM in June, and Dubai does not change its clocks, so the table below holds year after year. Both cruises are paid in advance for the same reason: the sunset slot is the first one gone. Everything else in this guide is detail, but it is the detail that decides whether you are in front of Ain Dubai when the sun touches the water or still queuing at the pier.

Sunset times in Dubai by month

Dubai sits at about 25 degrees north, so the day length changes less than in Europe: the earliest sunsets are around 5:30 PM in late November and December, the latest around 7:10 PM in June and July, and the year swings through about an hour and forty minutes. The times below are approximate for the middle of each month and shift by a few minutes across it; check the exact sunset for your date before you book the shared departure.

MonthSunset, aboutDaysSea

November5:30 PM20-30°C, peak season begins20-24°C
December5:30 PM20-30°C, busy over Christmas and New Year20-24°C

Times are approximate and for mid-month; Dubai has no daylight saving. Day and sea temperatures are typical ranges.

Two practical consequences. In winter the sunset cruise is an early-evening affair that leaves the whole night free: a 5 PM December departure is back at the pier by 6 PM with dinner still ahead. In summer it is the pleasant part of a very hot day; the water is warm, the deck breeze is the point, and the departures around 6:30-7 PM are the ones to want. The what to wear on a yacht guide has the seasonal layer advice; the short version is a light jacket from December to February, because 14-20°C on a moving deck feels cooler than it sounds.

Shared hour or private charter at sunset

Both leave from the same marina in the same light, and both are booked on WhatsApp. The difference is who is on board and who decides the timing.

Shared sunset hourPrivate sunset charter

The verdict by group. A couple or a family of four takes the shared hour: about AED 117 a seat against AED 1,200 for the smallest private boat, which is an open 31 ft sports boat rather than a yacht, in the same light. Six friends are at the break-even, AED 200 each for three private hours with a swim against $32 for one shared hour without. From ten upwards the private boat is the cheaper option per head as well as the better one, and a birthday, a proposal or anyone who wants to choose the exact minute of departure goes private whatever the group size. The shared yacht tours guide covers the hour in full; the how many hours guide sets out what 2, 3 and 4 private hours each buy.

The golden-hour route, stage by stage

The geography does the work. Dubai Marina faces west over open sea, so a boat that leaves the canal an hour before sunset has the sun ahead of it on the way out and the lit skyline ahead of it on the way back. This is the shared hour; a private 2-hour charter runs the same stages at half the pace, and a 3-hour charter puts the Palm lagoon and the swim in front of them.

  • The canal, first 20 minutes or so. Between the towers with the light already low and orange on the glass. Shoes are off, the twisted Cayan Tower and Pier 7 go past, and the canal's slow speed gives everyone time for the first photographs.
  • JBR, the sun over the water. Out of the canal mouth and along the beachfront. The row of JBR towers behind the beach is the postcard, and from here the sun is dropping towards the sea to the west with nothing in the way.
  • Bluewaters and Ain Dubai, the sunset itself. The photo stop in front of the observation wheel is timed for the last minutes of light; the wheel and the Bluewaters towers stand against the sky while the crew hold the boat steady for the shot. This is the moment the departure time is chosen for.
  • The return at blue hour. Back along JBR and into the canal as the Marina switches on, the 20-30 minutes after sunset when the sky is still deep blue and the towers are lit from inside. The best photographs of the skyline are usually from this leg, not the sunset one.
  • On a private charter: the Palm first. A 3-hour charter reaches the Palm Jumeirah lagoon in its second hour, anchors for the swim while the sun is still up, and comes home along JBR for the sunset and the blue-hour canal; the Marina yacht route guide walks every stage.

Timing it: which departure to book

On the shared cruise the rule is simple: book the departure that starts 30-45 minutes before sunset. In December that means the departure around 5 PM for a 5:30 PM sunset; in June, the one around 6:30 PM for a 7:10 PM sunset. You reach Bluewaters as the sun meets the water and return through the canal at blue hour. The departure that leaves at sunset is the second-best: you miss the sun going down but get the whole return in lights, and it often still has seats when the sunset one is gone. The departure that ends at sunset gets the golden light without the sunset itself and is the one to avoid if the sunset is the point.

On a private charter, count back from the sunset in the table. Leave 60-90 minutes before it for a 2-hour cruise that catches the golden hour on the outward leg and the lights on the way home; leave 2-3 hours before it if you want a swim first, because the Coast Guard closes swimming around 5 PM in winter and 7 PM in summer, and a winter charter that leaves at 4:30 PM has no swim left in it.

Then add the journey to the pier. Winter sunset departures board at exactly the start of the 5-8 PM rush on Sheikh Zayed Road, so from Downtown allow 40 minutes or more by taxi rather than the 25 a quiet afternoon takes; DMCC on the Metro Red Line and a short taxi or tram is the reliable alternative, and Marina Mall gives three hours of free parking. The how to get to the yacht pier guide has the walking directions from the metro. The shared yacht leaves strictly on time with no refund for late arrivals, and on a charter a late arrival shortens your hours.

Why sunset sells out, and how early to book

The booking pattern is consistent: on the shared yacht the sunset departure is the first to go, and on the private fleet sunset is the most requested slot on every boat. That is why the shared hour is paid in full in advance rather than at the pier, and why we tell charter guests to fix the sunset slot before anything else in their week, including the dinner reservation.

How early depends on the season. November to March is peak season, the last two weeks of December and the days around Eid are the busiest of all, and the balloon, the safari and the yachts all fill up then. For the shared hour, book the sunset departure as soon as your dates are fixed; the daytime departures are easier. For a private charter, send the date, the guests and the occasion on WhatsApp and we check the yacht with the marina and hold it; nothing is paid until the boat, the time and the total are confirmed. If the sunset slot on the boat you wanted is gone, the fleet has 30 boats, and a different one of the same size at the same hour is usually the better answer than the same boat at the wrong hour.

Sea conditions have the last word. If the Coast Guard cancels the shared cruise you get a full refund or the next available slot; if it issues a weather warning for a charter you choose a new route, a new date or a full refund, free of charge. In practice the Marina and JBR waters are calm for most of the year, which is also why the shared yacht rarely troubles anyone prone to seasickness; if you are, take a tablet 30 minutes before boarding.

What to bring and wear for a sunset on the water

The list is short, and most of it is about the rules at the pier rather than the weather.

  • Documents. On the shared yacht every guest carries an original passport or Emirates ID for the Coast Guard check. On a private charter a copy on your phone is enough, plus the card for the security pre-authorisation of AED 2,000-15,000 that is held at check-in and released after the trip.
  • Shoes off. Everyone boards barefoot or in socks to protect the decks, on both cruises. Bring socks if the deck will be cool.
  • A layer from December to February. Evenings of 14-20°C feel cooler on a moving deck than on the promenade; a light jacket or a pashmina is enough.
  • Sunglasses and a hat until the sun goes. The outward leg faces straight into it.
  • Dress code. Smart casual on the shared yacht. Swimwear belongs on the private charter with a swim stop, under something for the boarding.
  • Drinks. Water is complimentary on the shared hour and no food is served; on a charter water, ice and soft drinks are on board and your own drinks and dry snacks come with you. Alcohol is for guests 21+ and only on the licensed boat, not in public spaces such as the pier.
  • A charged phone. The crew on the shared yacht help with the couple photograph at Ain Dubai; the best sunset spots in Dubai guide compares this one with the beaches and the decks if you are choosing where to spend a single sunset.

Sunset on the water, then the rest of the evening

A winter sunset cruise ends around 6 PM with the evening untouched, which is the best argument for it. Marina Walk and The Walk at JBR are a few minutes from the pier for dinner; the Dubai Fountain in Downtown runs its evening shows every 30 minutes from about 6 PM, and a 25-40 minute taxi puts a 7:30 or 8 PM show comfortably within reach. Every night the same pier hosts the Dubai Marina yacht party at 9 PM, four hours with a live DJ and a live BBQ for $99, strictly 21+ with an original ID; it is a different night rather than a sequel to the sunset, and most guests do them on different evenings.

For a couple building a full trip around the water, the pairing that works is the sunset cruise on the first evening, the sunrise balloon later in the week ($275 with pre-dawn pickup, 30% deposit, sells out one to two weeks ahead) and a private 3-hour charter with a swim on the last afternoon, once the group and the weather are known. If you would rather see the whole week laid out on the map with the tours in place, the SB AI planner does that in a minute, and the WhatsApp line does the rest.

FAQ

What time is sunset in Dubai Marina?

About 5:30 PM in late November and December, 5:50 PM in January, 6:25 PM in March, 6:55 PM in May, 7:10 PM in June and July, 6:25 PM in September and 5:55 PM in October. Dubai does not change its clocks, so the times repeat every year and move only a few minutes within a month. For the shared cruise, book the departure that starts 30-45 minutes before sunset.

How much is a sunset yacht cruise in Dubai Marina?

From $32 per person on the 1-hour shared yacht tour, with hourly departures from the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower and full prepayment. A private sunset charter starts at AED 400 per hour for a 31 ft boat with a 3-hour minimum, AED 1,200 in total, or AED 1,600 for two hours on a 48 ft yacht for up to 12 guests. Captain, crew, fuel, water, ice and soft drinks are included in the charter rate.

Which departure should I book to see the sunset from the shared yacht?

The one that starts 30-45 minutes before sunset: around 5 PM for a 5:30 PM December sunset, around 6:30 PM for a 7:10 PM June sunset. You reach the Ain Dubai photo stop as the sun meets the water and return through the canal at blue hour with the towers lit. The departure that leaves at sunset is the second choice, with the whole return in lights.

Can you swim on a sunset yacht charter?

Only in daylight and at anchor, off the Palm or JBR, and the Coast Guard closes swimming around 5 PM in winter and 7 PM in summer. For a swim and a sunset in the same private charter, leave 2-3 hours before sunset on a 3-hour booking and swim first. Children under 10 wear life jackets. The shared 1-hour cruise has no swim stop.

Does the sunset cruise sell out?

Yes. The sunset departure of the shared yacht is the first to go, which is why it is paid in full in advance and not at the pier, and sunset is the most requested slot on every private boat. Book the shared hour as soon as your dates are fixed, especially between November and March, over the last two weeks of December and around Eid; for a charter, ask for the sunset slot before you plan anything else that day.

Is the sunset cruise suitable for children?

Yes. The shared 1-hour yacht tour takes all ages with life jackets in every size and no minimum age; children need an ID or passport like everyone else. On a private charter children under 10 wear life jackets on deck and in the water, under-21s stay with an adult and babies under 2 stay in the saloon or cabin with a parent. The 9 PM yacht party is strictly 21+.

What is the best month for a sunset yacht cruise in Dubai?

November to March: 20-30°C days, 14-20°C evenings, calm water and early sunsets between 5:30 and 6:25 PM that leave the night free. April and October are hot but comfortable on the water. From May to September the cruise still runs and the deck breeze is welcome, but days are 38-45°C, the humidity peaks from July to September and sunset is as late as 7:10 PM.
