Dubai in August: Heat, Humidity and What Still Works

Dubai in August is the most humid month: 41-45°C days, nights above 30°C and a 34°C sea. A verdict on what works, hotel prices and the Burj Khalifa slot from $55.

Days 41-45°C, nights above 30°C, the most humid month, sea 33-34°CSunset moves from about 7:05 PM to 6:40 PM; Burj slot about 5:30-6:00 PMBurj Khalifa from $55; yacht party $99 (21+); desert safari from $45

Dubai in August is the hardest month for heat and humidity: 41-45°C by day, nights above 30°C and a sea of 33-34°C, as warm as a bath. It still works, because the city is built around air conditioning: indoor sights, hotel pools, evening boats and a desert camp with air-conditioned tents. Book a Burj Khalifa ticket from $55 for about 5:30 to 6:00 PM, and keep every outdoor plan for before 9 AM or after sunset.

How hot is Dubai in August?

Typical highs are 41-45°C, nights stay above 30°C, humidity regularly passes 60% and the sea is 33-34°C. Sunset slips from about 7:05 PM to 6:40 PM through the month. It is the most humid month, so the air feels heavier than the number suggests.

Six August plans that work

Burj Khalifa near sunset #1
The Dubai Mall, lower ground floor entrance The view, in air conditioning

Burj Khalifa near sunset

Sunset slips from about 7:05 PM to 6:40 PM through August, so ask for a slot at about 5:30-6:00 PM. Levels 124 and 125 are indoors, have an outdoor terrace you can skip and no time limit, and cost from $55. Summer haze softens the daytime horizon, so the evening view is the better one.

The cold-room day #2
The Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, Ski Dubai 11 AM to 5 PM, families and couples

The cold-room day

Malls are free to enter and kept cold, the aquarium's glass wall is dim and cool and Ski Dubai has real snow. Attraction tickets are paid and change often, so check the official sites. A long lunch and a slow walk between shops is a legitimate August sightseeing plan.

The shared yacht hour #3
Dubai Marina pier, Level P of Al Majara Tower Cooling off on the water near sunset

The shared yacht hour

From $32 per person for one hour with hourly departures, chilled bottled water and a photo stop at Ain Dubai. Choose the departure nearest sunset, when the wind off the Gulf is the first pleasant air of the day. Check in 20 minutes early, take your shoes off and prepay in full to hold the seat.

The 9 PM yacht party #4
Dubai Marina pier; boarding 8:30 PM, back about 1:00 AM Groups of friends aged 21 and over

The 9 PM yacht party

Four hours on the water at $99 per person with a live DJ, a live BBQ, unlimited soft drinks and 25-45 international guests. It is strictly 21+ with an original ID or passport, smart casual or party wear, and no swimwear. August nights are above 30°C, so the moving boat is the cool place.

The desert camp in air conditioning #5
Lahbab Red Dunes and Al Khayma camp; hotel pickup Groups who want the desert at night, not at noon

The desert camp in air conditioning

From $45 per person, 7 hours, with an air-conditioned 4x4 from your hotel and air-conditioned tents at the camp. The evening is a BBQ buffet, a fire show, Tanoura and belly dance, and unlimited drinks. You are on the sand briefly for the sunset, so it is a camp night, not a dune day.

Abu Dhabi at 8:00 AM #6
Abu Dhabi; hotel pickup at 8:00 AM One real sightseeing day in a hot month

Abu Dhabi at 8:00 AM

The 9-hour tour from $45 starts with the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, before the sun is high, then the BAPS Mandir, the Corniche and Heritage Village. Abu Dhabi is 2-3 degrees hotter than Dubai. Wear light, loose clothing that meets the mosque dress code, and drink the water on board.

Dubai in August: the short answer

Dubai in August is as hot as July and more humid: 41-45°C by day, nights above 30°C and a sea of 33-34°C. Humidity regularly passes 60% and is higher at dawn and after dark, so the air feels heavy even in the shade. Sunrise is about 5:45-5:55 AM and sunset slips from about 7:05 PM to 6:40 PM through the month. Rain is almost unknown.

That sounds like a reason to stay away, and for some people it is. But the city is built for it. Malls, the Burj Khalifa, aquariums, hotel pools, the Metro and the evening tours all run in air conditioning, the hotels are among the cheapest of the year and the queues are short. The rule is the same as in June and July, only stricter: the middle of the day is for being inside.

Why August feels worse than the number

The thermometer says 42°C. Your body says more, because sweat does not evaporate easily in humid air, so the heat does not leave your skin. The coast is worse than inland, and the nights give no relief: at 10 PM it is still above 30°C on the Marina Walk. The UAE's summer midday break for outdoor workers usually runs from 12:30 to 3 PM between 15 June and 15 September, and it is a good clock for visitors too.

Three habits change the trip. Drink before you are thirsty. Shower and change before an evening out, because a shirt soaked on a ten-minute walk will not dry. And choose transport for every journey over ten minutes: the Metro is air-conditioned, and a taxi is cheap compared with a ruined day.

What works in August: a verdict on each plan

The table gives a plain verdict. Where a plan works only at one end of the day, the time is the whole answer.

Plans that work only at one end of the day are best booked for that end.

The honest summary: anything that needs you to stand in the sun for more than ten minutes is out, and anything with air conditioning, shade or a moving boat is in. For a fuller heat-proof week, see Dubai in summer. The Museum of the Future is temporarily closed, so check whether it has reopened before you plan around it.

The Burj Khalifa in August: ask for 5:30-6:00 PM

The tower is the best single August plan. The visit is indoors, there is no time limit on Levels 124 and 125, and the view improves as the day cools. Because sunset moves earlier through the month, the slot to ask for is about 6:00 PM at the start of August and about 5:30 PM at the end. One ticket then covers late daylight, sunset and the lit city.

Levels 124 and 125 are from $55 per person and SKY Level 148, with a lounge, a host and refreshments, from $115. Sunset and other prime-time slots cost more, and we confirm the exact price for your slot on WhatsApp. Tickets are prepaid for a fixed slot and cannot be refunded or changed. Allow 1.5-2 hours, and be inside The Dubai Mall before the slot, because the security check and the walk to the lower ground floor come first.

Come down for the Dubai Fountain, which plays every 30 minutes from about 6 PM (check Emaar's channels for the current timetable). More on slots and prices is in the best time to visit Burj Khalifa, Level 124 vs 148 and the Fountain guide.

Evenings: the water and the desert

The shared yacht hour from $32 and the yacht party at $99 are the two August evenings we would book first. The party is 21+, boards at 8:30 PM at the pier behind Al Majara Tower, leaves at 9 PM sharp and returns at about 1 AM, with full prepayment because the nights sell out. Cruises depend on sea conditions, and safety comes first. The yacht party guide covers the night in full.

The full-day desert safari is from $45 per person, or $65 with a 30-minute quad ride, with no prepayment: you agree the date on WhatsApp and pay on the day. The pickup is in an air-conditioned 4x4 and the camp has air-conditioned tents. Bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for the sunset hour, and skip a heavy meal before pickup. If you want a long, cool evening on the dunes, wait for winter; our summer safari guide is straight about this.

Hotels and the end of the summer

August hotel rates are among the lowest of the year, and resorts compete with breakfast, kids-stay-free and late-checkout offers. Compare the total, including the per-night tourism dirham fee, and ask whether the pool is chilled. Dubai Summer Surprises, the summer festival that usually covers July and August, gives the malls their promotions; the most recent edition ended on 30 August.

Towards the end of the month the city starts to refill: residents return from holiday and school terms begin around the end of August or early September, so roads and restaurants get busier. Rates usually stay low until the autumn. If you are choosing between August and the weeks after it, Dubai in September is the next step.

Who should skip August, and the heat rules

Skip August if you want to walk, hike, photograph outdoors or sit on a beach in the afternoon. Think twice with babies, toddlers, older relatives or anyone with a heart or breathing condition, and ask your own doctor first; this is general guidance, not medical advice. For everyone else, these rules work:

  • Be outside before 9 AM or after sunset, and inside from 11 AM to 5 PM.
  • Drink water through the day, not just in the car or at dinner.
  • Wear light cotton or linen, a hat, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen, and carry a light layer for the Metro and the malls.
  • Cover shoulders and knees for malls and mosques.
  • If someone is faint, nauseous or confused, get them into air conditioning, give water and call 998 for an ambulance.

FAQ

How hot is Dubai in August?

Typical highs are 41-45°C, nights stay above 30°C, humidity regularly passes 60% and the sea is 33-34°C. Sunset slips from about 7:05 PM to 6:40 PM through the month. It is the most humid month, so the air feels heavier than the number suggests.

Is August a bad time to visit Dubai?

It is a hard time, not an impossible one. Hotels are among the cheapest of the year, queues are short and the indoor sights, the Burj Khalifa (from $55), the yacht party ($99, 21+) and the air-conditioned desert camp (from $45) all work. Walkers and anyone sensitive to heat should choose another month.

What is there to do in Dubai in August?

Malls, Ski Dubai, the aquarium, the Burj Khalifa at about 5:30-6:00 PM, water parks at opening, a shared yacht hour from $32, the 9 PM yacht party and an evening desert safari. Global Village, Miracle Garden and Dubai Safari Park are closed for the season.

Is Dubai quiet in August?

Quieter than winter at the sights and in the hotels, though the malls stay busy during Dubai Summer Surprises. Residents return and school terms restart around the end of the month, so roads and restaurants get busier in the last week.

Does the desert safari run in August?

Yes. The full-day safari is from $45 per person, with hotel pickup in an air-conditioned 4x4, a camp with air-conditioned tents and no prepayment. Time on the sand is short, mainly for sunset; for hours on the dunes, winter is better.

What is the best Burj Khalifa time in August?

A slot at about 6:00 PM in early August and about 5:30 PM at the end of the month, as sunset moves from about 7:05 PM to 6:40 PM. Levels 124 and 125 are from $55 with no time limit; prime-time slots cost more and tickets cannot be refunded or changed.

Is the sea safe to swim in during August?

The sea is warm, 33-34°C, so swimming is comfortable but not cooling. Swim at beaches with lifeguards, before 9 AM or after 5 PM, and note that shamal wind can roughen the sea on some days.
