Six cool ways to spend a July day

Burj Khalifa at the 6:00 PM slot #1
The Dubai Mall, lower ground floor entrance A first look at the city without stepping into the heat

Burj Khalifa at the 6:00 PM slot

Levels 124 and 125 are indoors, air-conditioned and have no time limit, so one ticket from $55 covers late daylight, the July sunset at about 7:05-7:10 PM and the lit city. Ask for a slot near 6:00 PM; prime-time slots cost more, and we confirm the price on WhatsApp.

A mall day in festival season #2
Mall of the Emirates, The Dubai Mall, Dubai Marina Mall Shoppers, families and anyone who wants shade

A mall day in festival season

Dubai Summer Surprises fills the malls with promotions, dining offers and family activities, almost all indoors. Walking in is free, the Metro serves Mall of the Emirates and The Dubai Mall, and a long lunch counts as an activity. Compare prices first; some discounts are real and some are ordinary offers with a festival label.

Snow and fish: the coldest rooms #3
Ski Dubai at Mall of the Emirates; the aquarium at The Dubai Mall Families and anyone who wants to be cold

Snow and fish: the coldest rooms

Ski Dubai keeps real snow at the foot of a mall, and the aquarium and underwater zoo is dim and cool, with a huge glass wall of sharks and rays. Both are paid attractions whose tickets and hours change, so check the official sites. Allow two to three hours for the snow and about two for the aquarium.

A water park at opening time #4
Aquaventure at Atlantis The Palm; Wild Wadi near the Burj Al Arab Families with school-age children

A water park at opening time

A water park is the one outdoor plan that makes sense in July, provided you arrive at opening, book online and leave by early afternoon. Slides and lazy rivers are where shade and wet skin make 42°C bearable. Both parks have official sites with current prices, hours and height rules, which change by season.

The shared yacht hour at sunset #5
Dubai Marina pier, Level P of Al Majara Tower Couples, families and groups of friends

The shared yacht hour at sunset

From $32 per person for one hour with hourly departures, chilled bottled water and a photo stop at Ain Dubai. On the water the wind makes the evening feel cooler than the harbour. Check in 20 minutes early with a passport or Emirates ID, take your shoes off to board and prepay in full to hold the seat.

Jet ski to the Burj Al Arab #6
Umm Suqeim Fishing Harbour, Jumeirah (no hotel pickup) Anyone who wants the sea at 33°C to do something

Jet ski to the Burj Al Arab

From $79 per jet ski for 30 minutes with an instructor, a Burj Al Arab photo stop and free photos and videos; the 60-minute ride is $140 and continues to Atlantis. Two riders share one jet ski. Ask us for the earliest or latest free slot, and expect showers and lockers at the base.

Dubai in July: the short answer

Dubai in July is the peak of the heat: 41-45°C by day, nights above 30°C, humidity on the coast and a sea around 33°C. Sunrise is at about 5:40 AM and sunset at about 7:05-7:10 PM. Rain does not fall, and on some days the shamal wind brings dust haze and a rougher sea, which can affect boat trips. It is the quietest month for the sights, one of the cheapest for hotels, and the month when the city runs Dubai Summer Surprises, its summer festival.

July is easy to plan and hard to enjoy outdoors. The clock that works is simple: outside at sunrise, indoors from 11 AM to 5 PM, back outside after sunset, and on the water in the evening. Compare it with June, which is a little milder, and August, which is as hot and more humid.

Who July suits, and who should skip it

Be honest about who you are travelling with. This is how July looks for each kind of trip.

TravellerVerdictWhy
Budget travellers, flexible couplesGoodLowest hotel rates of the year, short queues and an indoor city that works at any hour
Resort and spa holidaysGoodChilled pools, summer packages and an air-conditioned city around them
Families with school-age childrenWorkableWater parks at opening, Ski Dubai, the aquarium and malls; keep 11 AM to 5 PM indoors
Babies and toddlersHardHeat and humidity leave very little outdoor time; plan from the hotel and the mall
Older travellers, heart or breathing conditionsThink twiceAsk your own doctor first; if you go, stay indoors by day and use air-conditioned transport
Walkers, hikers, outdoor photographersSkipThere is no comfortable outdoor daylight; wait for November
Desert lovers who want hours on the dunesSkip or adjustThe safari works, but you spend the dune time briefly at sunset; winter is better

This is general guidance, not medical advice. Anyone with a health condition should ask their own doctor before choosing July.

If you are flexible, November to March gives the same trip with far more outdoor time, and Dubai in summer has the full heat-proof day.

Dubai Summer Surprises: what it is and what it is worth

Dubai Summer Surprises is the city's summer shopping and entertainment festival, run by Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment. It usually covers July and August; the most recent edition ran from 2 July to 30 August, according to the organisers' announcement reported by WAM. Expect mall promotions, dining offers, live entertainment and family activities, nearly all of them indoors.

Be realistic about it. Some discounts are real, especially on dining and in the big malls, and some are ordinary offers with a festival label, so compare prices before you buy. Tourists who qualify can claim back VAT on purchases. Programmes and dates change every year, so check Visit Dubai for the current edition. Hotels run their own summer offers on top. For where to shop, see best malls in Dubai.

The indoor plan: where it is cool and what it costs

A July day needs three or four indoor places that you actually want to see. These are the ones we would pick, and the third-party prices are for you to check on the official sites because they change.

The Burj Khalifa in July: the 6:00 PM slot

A tower is the cleanest answer to a July afternoon: the visit is indoors and the view is huge. Sunset is about 7:05-7:10 PM, so we suggest a slot at about 6:00 PM. Levels 124 and 125 have no time limit, so one ticket from $55 shows the city in late light, at sunset and lit up. Haze can soften the daytime horizon in summer, which is why an evening slot often shows more than a midday one.

SKY Level 148 is from $115 and adds the lounge, priority access, a multilingual host and refreshments. Sunset and other prime-time slots cost more, and we confirm the exact price on WhatsApp. Tickets are prepaid for a fixed slot and cannot be refunded or changed. On request we also book Sky Views Observatory, The View at The Palm and the Dubai Frame; Burj Khalifa or Sky Views helps you choose.

Plan to be inside The Dubai Mall before your slot, because the security check and the walk to the lower ground floor come first. Allow 1.5-2 hours on the decks. The timing in other months is in the best time to visit Burj Khalifa.

The water plan: a 33°C sea, pools and boats

The Gulf in July is as warm as a bath. Swimming in it is pleasant at 6 AM and pointless at 2 PM, because the water does not cool you and the sand is too hot to cross. Swim early or after 5 PM, at beaches with lifeguards, and use your hotel pool for the rest. Many pools are chilled in summer, so ask. The water that works is the water you are moving across, because the wind does the cooling.

The shared Marina yacht hour is from $32 per person with hourly departures. The 90-minute speedboat tour is from $45, with up to nine departures a day between 9 AM and 5 PM; the 5 PM one is $60. Guests under 5 and aged 65 and over are not allowed on the speedboat, and it is not recommended for anyone with back or heart problems. Both leave from the pier behind Al Majara Tower and both need full prepayment.

For something faster, the jet ski to the Burj Al Arab is from $79 per jet ski. The same Umm Suqeim harbour also runs flyboard (from $89), parasailing (from $99) and wakeboarding. Every rider needs an original passport or Emirates ID, and there is no hotel pickup. Ask us for the first or last slot of the day; water sports in Dubai has the ages and the combos.

Hotels, flights and the heat rules

July is usually among the cheapest months for hotels and flights, so resorts that cost a fortune in January often come within reach. Compare the total, including the per-night tourism dirham fee, and ask whether the pool is shaded or chilled. The heat rules we give every summer guest:

  • Drink before you are thirsty, and carry water everywhere.
  • Wear light cotton or linen, a hat, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen, and cover shoulders and knees for malls and mosques.
  • Take a taxi or the Metro for any journey longer than ten minutes; surfaces and seat belts are hot to touch.
  • Carry a light layer for the Metro and the malls.
  • If someone is faint, nauseous or confused, get them into air conditioning, give water and call 998 for an ambulance.

The nights on the water are the best part of a July trip: the yacht party at $99 for 21+ from 9 PM, and the air-conditioned desert camp from $45.
