Dubai is one of the easier cities for a wheelchair user, with limits. The Metro has lifts and spaces for chairs (AED 3-7.5 a trip), adapted taxis can be pre-booked, the Dubai Mall lends wheelchairs at its Concierge desks and the Burj Khalifa observation decks are reached by lift. The weak points are Old Dubai's uneven lanes, some beaches, boats and the desert. This guide sorts what works, what to confirm and which of our tours to skip, including the Burj Khalifa ticket from $55.

Is Dubai wheelchair accessible?
Largely, in the newer districts and the big attractions. Downtown, the Marina, JBR and the malls have level pavements, dropped kerbs and lifts, and the Metro costs AED 3-7.5 a trip with wheelchair spaces on board. Old Dubai, some beaches, boats and the desert need checking first.

Five places that work well step-free
#1
The Dubai Metro
The Metro is built with lifts at stations and spaces for wheelchairs on board, and a trip costs AED 3-7.5 on a Silver Nol card. Trains run about every 3-7 minutes from around 5 AM to midnight or 1 AM. Avoid the rush hours of 7-9:30 AM and 5-8 PM, when spaces fill, and check the lift at your station in the RTA app.
#2
The Dubai Mall
A very large, air-conditioned mall with lifts and level floors. Its Concierge desks lend wheelchairs and baby strollers for use inside the mall, against a valid ID or a cash deposit, with a refundable retainer of AED 1,000. The walk from the Metro station is 10-15 minutes by an air-conditioned bridge, so allow for it.
#3
The Burj Khalifa observation decks
The elevator climbs to Level 124 at 10 metres per second, with floor-to-ceiling glass, telescopes and the outdoor terrace. Our itinerary reaches Level 125 by a staircase, so ask us to confirm step-free access to 125 and to SKY Level 148 before you pay. Tickets from $55 are fixed to a date and slot and cannot be refunded or changed.
#4
The Dubai Fountain promenade
The boardwalk beside Burj Lake and the lawns of Burj Park are flat and open, and the Fountain plays every 30 minutes in the evening, from 6 PM to 11 PM. It is free, but crowds build after dark and at weekends. In summer use the mall's air-conditioned routes and come out for the show; check Emaar's channels for current show times.
#5
Marina Walk and The Walk at JBR
These newer waterfront districts have wide, level promenades, dropped kerbs and plenty of cafés, and the tram links the two. Surfaces on the sand are another matter: for the beach ask the hotel or the venue about step-free routes and beach wheelchairs. Choose the early morning or the evening, as there is little shade at midday.
Wheelchair accessible Dubai: the short answer
Yes, Dubai is workable for wheelchair users, and easiest in the newer districts. Downtown, Dubai Marina, JBR and the big malls have wide, level pavements, dropped kerbs, lifts and accessible toilets. The Metro has lifts and spaces for chairs and costs AED 3-7.5 a trip, and the Dubai Mall lends wheelchairs from its Concierge desks. Old Dubai, the beaches and anything on a boat or in the desert need checking one by one.
Two cautions. First, we are a booking company, not an accessibility specialist: this guide is general, drawn from public information, and venues change, so confirm with each attraction or the RTA before you travel. Second, several of our tours are not suitable for wheelchair users, and our Burj Khalifa tickets cannot be refunded or changed once issued, so message us on WhatsApp with your needs before you pay and we can ask the operator.
The Metro, taxis and airports
The Metro and the tram are the reliable core. Trains and stations are built to be accessible, with lifts and spaces for wheelchairs on board. The Metro runs from about 5 AM to midnight or 1 AM, and fares are AED 3-7.5 on a Silver Nol card; our Dubai Metro guide has the stations and fares. The Metro stations also double as footbridges across Sheikh Zayed Road, which cannot be crossed on foot elsewhere.
| Option | What to know |
|---|---|
| Metro and tram | Lifts at stations and wheelchair spaces on board; avoid 7-9:30 AM and 5-8 PM; check that the lift at your station is working before you set off |
| Taxis | A folding chair goes in the boot of an ordinary taxi; adapted taxis can be pre-booked through RTA apps or transport providers, so ask for the vehicle when you book, not when you hail |
| Ride-hailing | Careem and Uber usually send ordinary cars; a powered chair needs an adapted vehicle |
| Airports | Ask your airline for wheelchair assistance when you book, and tell it early if you use a powered chair, including the battery type |
| Abra and water crossings | Boarding is by steps, and our Old Dubai walking tour, which includes an abra ride, is not suitable for wheelchair users |
Distances can be longer than they look on a map, and the first and last stretch is where most plans go wrong: the lift is out of order, the kerb has no ramp or the stop is a long way from the entrance. Build in extra time for every transfer, and keep a taxi app on your phone as a back-up. From Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station to the mall is a 10-15 minute walk along an air-conditioned bridge, and the pavements outside are not air-conditioned, so in summer (38-45°C from May to September) go by taxi door to door. Taxi fares and apps are in the taxi and Careem guide.
The Dubai Mall, Burj Khalifa and the Fountain
The Dubai Mall's Concierge desks lend wheelchairs and baby strollers for use inside the mall only. You leave a valid ID (UAE, GCC, international or a driving licence) or a cash deposit, with a refundable retainer of AED 1,000, and any loss or damage is charged. Ask at the nearest Concierge desk.
Our Burj Khalifa ticket is timed entry, from $55 for Levels 124 and 125 and from $115 for SKY Level 148. You make your own way to The Dubai Mall and enter At the Top on the lower ground floor. The route is a security check with metal detectors, a moving walkway past an exhibition and an elevator to Level 124, where the outdoor terrace is. Our itinerary reaches Level 125 by a staircase, so ask us to confirm access to 125 and to SKY Level 148 for your party. Because tickets cannot be refunded or changed once issued, confirm first.
Outside, the boardwalk beside Burj Lake and the lawns of Burj Park are flat, and the Dubai Fountain plays every 30 minutes in the evening. The Downtown Dubai area guide has the layout, and the best time to visit Burj Khalifa explains which slot to ask for.
Attractions and areas: what to expect
As a rule, anything built recently is easier. The table is a starting point; call or message the venue about your own chair and needs.
| Place | Access | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| The Dubai Mall and Dubai Aquarium window | Lifts and level floors; loans at Concierge | Very large, so plan rests; the big tank is visible free from the mall floor |
| Downtown promenade and Burj Park | Flat and wide | Crowded at weekends and during Fountain shows |
| Marina Walk and The Walk at JBR | Level promenades with dropped kerbs | Little shade at midday; tram and Metro nearby |
| The Green Planet | Ticket sellers describe it as wheelchair accessible | Confirm with the venue before you buy; it is indoors |
| Al Fahidi and Old Dubai | Paved but uneven, with steps and narrow gates | Awkward for a wheelchair or pushchair; the souks are crowded |
| Museum of the Future | Not applicable for now | Temporarily closed; see our Museum of the Future guide for the latest |
For ideas that need no stairs and cost little, the best free things to do in Dubai lists the Fountain, the promenades and the waterfronts, and the Old Dubai guide says what to expect in the lanes.
Beaches and the sea
Dubai's public beaches are free and the main ones have lifeguards. Reports describe accessible paths at some of them, with Kite Beach the usual example, but conditions change, so ask Dubai Municipality or the beach operator about current access and beach wheelchairs. The easiest beach day is often at a hotel: ask before you book about step-free routes to the sand, beach wheelchairs and an accessible pool entry.
On the water, our tour details do not describe wheelchair access for the shared yacht hour, where you board from a marina pier and take your shoes off. Ask us before you book it. The Marina speedboat tour is not suitable for wheelchair users. The best beaches in Dubai guide covers the beaches themselves.
Our tours: what we can and cannot say
We list what our tour details say, and where they are silent we say so. If a line below says to ask, message us with the chair type and the party, and we will ask the operator before you pay.
| Tour | What our details say |
|---|---|
| Burj Khalifa tickets, from $55 | Reached by an elevator to Level 124; Level 125 is by a staircase in our itinerary; prepaid and not refundable, so ask first |
| Old Dubai walking tour, from $35 | Not suitable for wheelchair users or limited mobility; pushchairs are not allowed |
| Marina speedboat tour, from $45 | Not suitable for wheelchair users |
| Evening quad safari, from $70 | Not recommended for wheelchair users |
| Full-day desert safari, from $45 | Our details do not describe wheelchair access; it involves a 4x4 and soft sand, so ask us first |
| Sunrise balloon, from $275 | Not described; the flight is not suitable for serious heart or back issues; ask us first |
| Shared yacht hour, from $32 | Not described; boarding from a marina pier; ask us first |
| Abu Dhabi city tour, from $45 shared | Not described; a private car for up to 7 is $245 if you need a flexible schedule; ask us first |
Planning: heat, hotels and who to ask
Heat is the practical limit. From May to September days reach 38-45°C, and metal chair frames, pavements and car seats get very hot, so keep outdoor time for the early morning or after dark and use the air-conditioned routes. November to March, at 20-30°C, is the easy season; the best time to visit Dubai has the month-by-month picture.
When you book a hotel, ask for an accessible room by name and check the details in writing: step-free entrance, door widths, a roll-in shower or a bath with grab rails, and a lift to every floor. For the route from the airport and around town, how to get around Dubai compares the options. Travel insurance that covers your equipment is worth having, and the final word on public transport, taxis and beaches belongs to the RTA and Dubai Municipality.

Some public beaches have accessible paths, with Kite Beach the usual example, but conditions change. Ask Dubai Municipality or the beach operator, or choose a hotel beach and ask about step-free routes and beach wheelchairs.
Which of your tours suit wheelchair users?
