Dubai on a budget costs about AED 300-450 per person per day in the November to March season, with two sharing a room and before flights: a 3-star in Deira or Bur Dubai, the Metro at AED 3-7.5 a trip, AED 10-30 cafeteria meals and the free waterfronts. The biggest savings are the hotel, alcohol and taxis, and the best-value extras are fixed-price tours that include dinner and transport, such as our desert safari from $45. Below: the daily budget line by line, and where to spend less.

Five of the best-value things in Dubai
#1
The free waterfront evening
The Dubai Fountain plays every 30 minutes in the evening, from 6 PM to 11 PM, on Burj Lake, and Burj Park, Marina Walk and JBR Beach cost nothing either. Add a cafeteria dinner and you have a full evening for a few dirhams. Check Emaar's channels for current show times, and expect crowds at weekends.
#2
The Metro and the tram
A Silver Nol card costs about AED 25 with AED 19 of credit, and a trip is AED 3, 5 or 7.5 depending on the zones. Downtown to the Marina by taxi is about AED 50-70 and by Metro AED 5-7.5, so a few rides pay for the card. Trains run about 5 AM to midnight or 1 AM.
#3
The abra across the Creek
A wooden abra crosses Dubai Creek for about AED 1-2, in a few minutes, between the Bur Dubai and Deira sides. It is the cheapest ride in the city and the best way into the souks. Our Old Dubai walking tour includes it, with a guide, coffee, dates and water, from $35.
#4
A cafeteria meal and karak tea
A shawarma, a plate of biryani or a karak tea in a cafeteria costs roughly AED 10-30 in total, against AED 35-60 in a mall food court and AED 80-150 in a promenade restaurant. Eat the big meal at lunch, keep dinner light or included in a tour, and drink the tap water or buy it at a supermarket.
#5
The $45 desert safari
From $45 per person, about AED 165, the full-day safari covers the 4x4 from the hotel door, dune bashing, sandboarding, a camel ride, a BBQ buffet, unlimited soft drinks and the camp shows, with nothing to prepay. Getting to the dunes alone would cost more than the ticket, and a quad ride is an optional $65.
Dubai on a budget: the short answer
A budget trip to Dubai costs about AED 300-450 per person per day in the November to March season, two people sharing a room and before flights. That is a 3-star in Deira or Bur Dubai, the Metro, cafeteria and food-court meals, free sights and one fixed-price tour spread over the week. At the current rate of about AED 3.67 to the dollar, it is roughly $80-120.
The spread comes almost entirely from three lines: the hotel, alcohol and taxis. Get those right and the rest of Dubai is cheap, because the best of it is free (the Fountain, the beaches, the souks) and our tours have fixed prices you can see before you land. The figures below match our fuller guide to what a Dubai trip costs, which also prices the mid-range and luxury versions.
A budget day, line by line
These are planning bands, not quotes: hotel and food swing with the season and the booking date, while our tour prices are exact.
| Per person per day | Budget band | How to stay in it |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel, half a double room | AED 125-225 | A 3-star in Deira, Bur Dubai or Karama in season; far less in summer |
| Food and drink | AED 60-100 | Cafeterias and food courts, a big lunch, no alcohol |
| Getting around | AED 15-30 | Metro and tram, an abra at AED 1-2, one taxi a day at most |
| Tickets and attractions | AED 20-60 | Free waterfronts, one paid view or museum every few days |
| Our tours, averaged over five days | About AED 55 | The $45 desert safari plus the $32 yacht hour, spread across the week |
| Total | About AED 300-450 | Two sharing a room, November to March, before flights |
Our prices are in dollars, converted at about AED 3.67 to the dollar; hotel and food bands are planning figures, not quotes.
The hotel: where most of the saving is
A room is the line where paying less rarely spoils the trip, because the evenings are the same wherever you sleep. The cheapest 3-star rooms are in Deira and Bur Dubai, from around AED 250-450 a night for two in season, a Metro ride from every beach and the closest to the airport. Karama and Al Barsha are the other usual cheaper bases, and Business Bay is typically 10-20% cheaper than Downtown for the same skyline. Our guide to where to stay in Dubai compares them.
When you come matters more than where you stay. Rates are highest from November to March, in the last two weeks of December and around Eid, and lowest from May to September, when a resort room can cost a fraction of its winter price. The catch is the heat: 38-45°C by day from May to September, so you live indoors and on the water until the evening. April and October are the compromise.
Read the total on the booking page, not the headline rate: hotels add a Tourism Dirham of about AED 7-20 per room per night plus a municipality fee, and VAT of 5% is normally already in listed prices.
Getting around for under AED 30 a day
The Red Line covers the tourist spine from the airport to the Marina, and a day of four or five rides costs AED 15-30. A Silver Nol card is about AED 25 including AED 19 of credit. The table shows why the Metro beats a taxi on most routes.
| Trip | Metro, tram or bus | Taxi, light traffic |
|---|---|---|
| DXB airport to Downtown | AED 5-7.5 | AED 40-60 |
| DXB airport to Dubai Marina or JBR | AED 7.5, the top zone fare | AED 80-110 |
| Downtown to Dubai Marina | AED 5-7.5 | AED 50-70 |
| Dubai to Abu Dhabi | Bus E100 or E101, about AED 25, about 2 hours | AED 250-350 one way |
Approximate fares; the meter and the RTA app are the reference on the day. A taxi starts at about AED 5 (about AED 25 from an airport rank) with a minimum fare of about AED 12.
Taxis are best kept for late nights, luggage and routes the Metro does not cover. Our guides to the Dubai Metro and to taxis and Careem have the details.
Eating well for AED 60-100 a day
Food is the line you control most, and it is where a budget day can go from AED 60 to AED 600. The good news is that the cheapest food in Dubai is also some of the best.
Skip alcohol and the Friday brunch if money matters. A beer or a glass of wine in a licensed hotel bar is typically AED 40-70, and only licensed venues serve it, so a few drinks cost more than a day's food. For the rules, see our alcohol laws guide.
- Cafeterias and street food: a shawarma, a plate of biryani or a karak tea in Deira, Bur Dubai or Karama for roughly AED 10-30, the cheapest good food in the city.
- Mall food courts and casual chains: about AED 35-60 a meal.
- Promenade and mid-range restaurants on The Walk at JBR, Marina Walk or Al Seef: roughly AED 80-150 per person without alcohol.
- Water: tap water is safe to drink, though most people buy bottled water, which costs a few dirhams in a supermarket and several times that from a minibar. Water is included on all our tours.
- Tours with dinner built in: the BBQ buffet and unlimited soft drinks at the safari camp replace a whole evening's food and drink.
Free and cheap sights
Half of the best of Dubai is free: the Fountain and Burj Park, the Marina Walk, JBR Beach and Kite Beach, the lanes of Al Fahidi, the Al Seef waterfront, and a wander through the Gold and Spice Souks. The best free things to do in Dubai has the whole list. The cheap paid half looks like this.
| Sight | Cost, approx | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Abra across Dubai Creek | AED 1-2 | A few minutes, Bur Dubai to Deira |
| Jumeirah Mosque guided visit | About AED 40 | Mornings, open to non-Muslims; check the official site |
| Dubai Frame | About AED 50 | Zabeel Park |
| Dubai Safari Park | Last season about AED 50 for adults, AED 20 for children | Reopened for the season on 12 October; check the official site for this season's prices |
| Dubai Miracle Garden | Adults about AED 100 before VAT | Open daily from 8 October to 31 May, according to Gulf News |
| Global Village, in season | AED 25 on weekdays, AED 30 at weekends | Season 31 opened on 14 October and runs to about May, according to Khaleej Times; hours differ between reports, so check the official site |
| Burj Khalifa Levels 124-125 | From $55 with us | The one view we would pay for; Burj Park is free for a photo of the tower |
Third-party prices change; the figures are rounded and as of 29 October 2026. Check the official site or app before you go.
Pay for one view, not three. Our Burj Khalifa tickets start at $55, and the comparison with a cheaper tower is in Burj Khalifa or Sky Views.
Fixed-price tours: what $32-45 replaces
A tour that bundles transport, food and activities can beat doing it yourself, and these do. The full-day desert safari is from $45 (about AED 165): hotel pickup in an air-conditioned 4x4, dune bashing, sandboarding, a camel ride, a BBQ buffet and unlimited soft drinks, tea and coffee, with no prepayment. There is no cheap, safe way to reach the dunes alone, so it replaces a taxi, a dinner and a show. The quad bike upgrade is $65; skip it if you are watching the budget. Our safari price comparison shows what changes between $45 and the higher options.
The Abu Dhabi city tour is also from $45, and costs less than a one-way taxi to the capital, which is AED 250-350. It covers the hotel pickup, a licensed guide, the Grand Mosque with registration assistance, the BAPS Mandir and Heritage Village. Be honest about the alternatives: the E100 or E101 bus is about AED 25 and takes about 2 hours, and Etihad Rail's Dubai to Abu Dhabi train, launched on 30 September, has fares from AED 39 booked online, according to Gulf News, though its stations are outside both city centres and you still need a taxi at each end. If all you want is to get there, those are cheaper; the tour buys the day. See Dubai to Abu Dhabi.
For the cheapest half day in the city, the Old Dubai walking tour is from $35 for 3-4 hours with a local guide, an abra ride, Arabic coffee, dates and water, and the shared yacht hour is from $32, the skyline from the water for the price of a lunch. The yacht is prepaid, because the hourly slots sell out.
Where a budget trip goes wrong
Most overspending comes from a few predictable places. These are the ones to watch.
- Alcohol and brunch: the single line that moves a food budget most. Budget for it separately, or skip it.
- Taxis in rush hour: the meter runs on time as well as distance. Use the Metro along Sheikh Zayed Road at 7-9:30 AM and 5-8 PM.
- Hotel fees: the Tourism Dirham and municipality fee on top of the room rate; check the total.
- Roaming: a tourist SIM or eSIM is cheaper than your home network abroad; see SIM cards at Dubai Airport.
- Paid views and parks in a row: pick one view and one park, and take the rest from the water or the sand.
- Leaving the prepaid items to the last minute: the balloon, at $275 with a 30% deposit, is not a budget item, and the yacht cruises sell out, so decide on those first and keep the rest flexible.
