Taxis are the default way around Dubai and they are honest: cream RTA cabs are metered at about AED 5 flag fall (AED 25 from an airport rank), about AED 2 per km and a minimum of around AED 12, and every one takes cards. Careem and Uber cost about the same or slightly more and fix the fare in the app; Hala books a street taxi through Careem at meter rates. Downtown to the Marina is about AED 50-70, DXB to Downtown AED 40-60. Here are the fares, the surcharges, the rush hours, the tipping, and the trips where a tour with hotel pickup beats any taxi.

The five ways to ride, ranked

RTA street taxi #1
Hailed on the street, hotel ranks, malls, airports Most rides; the cheapest metered fare

RTA street taxi

The cream cars with the coloured roofs. Metered at about AED 5 flag fall and about AED 2 per km with a minimum of around AED 12, cards accepted, drivers who know the city. Pink roofs are ladies' taxis with women drivers. The only places you wait are the mall ranks at Fountain time and the Marina on a Saturday night.

Careem and Uber #2
App-booked cars, fare shown before you ride Airport pickups, addresses that are hard to explain, late nights

Careem and Uber

Both apps run in Dubai at similar or slightly higher prices than the meter, and both fix the fare before the car arrives, which removes the address conversation and the guesswork. Careem is the local favourite, and its Hala option calls a regular RTA taxi at meter rates. Load one before you land; the SIM or eSIM from the airport gets you online for the first booking.

Airport taxis #3
The ranks outside DXB Terminals 1-3 and DWC Two or more people with luggage

Airport taxis

The meter starts at about AED 25 from an airport rank instead of AED 5, and the fares are still fair: about AED 40-60 to Downtown, AED 55-75 to Jumeirah, AED 80-110 to the Marina or JBR, AED 90-120 to Atlantis. Alone with a carry-on at DXB, the Metro from Terminal 1 or 3 costs AED 5-7.5 and is the better deal into Downtown.

The Metro, when it beats a taxi #4
Sheikh Zayed Road corridor: airport, Downtown, Mall of the Emirates, Marina Rush hour, 7-9:30 AM and 5-8 PM

The Metro, when it beats a taxi

A taxi from Downtown to the Marina is 25-40 minutes on a clear road and up to 70 in the evening peak; the Red Line does the same trip for AED 5-7.5 with no traffic at all. The rule of thumb: taxi for evenings, groups and luggage, Metro when both ends are on the line and the clock says rush hour.

Hotel pickup with our tours #5
The desert, Abu Dhabi, the balloon The rides no taxi does well

Hotel pickup with our tours

A taxi to the Lahbab dunes is 45-60 km each way with no car waiting on the sand, and Abu Dhabi is AED 250-350 one way before you have seen a single sight. Our desert safari, Abu Dhabi day and sunrise balloon include door-to-door pickup, so the transport is part of the ticket from $45 and the driver is a licensed guide.

Taxis in Dubai: the short version

Dubai taxis are plentiful, metered and safe, and for most visitors they are the main way around. The cream RTA cars start the meter at about AED 5 (about AED 25 from an airport rank), charge about AED 2 per km, and have a minimum fare of around AED 12. Every taxi takes cards. A Downtown-to-Marina ride is about AED 50-70 without traffic; DXB to Downtown about AED 40-60.

Careem and Uber both run here at similar or slightly higher prices, with the fare fixed in the app before the car arrives. Hala, inside the Careem app, sends an ordinary RTA taxi at meter rates, which is the best of both: app booking, street price. Tipping is not expected; rounding up is the norm.

When not to take a taxi: on the Sheikh Zayed Road corridor at rush hour, where the Metro is faster for AED 3-7.5, and for the desert, Abu Dhabi and the balloon, where our tours include the pickup and a licensed guide. Everything else in this guide is detail.

RTA taxis vs Careem, Uber and Hala

The three options overlap more than the app stores suggest: Careem and Uber send private-hire cars, Hala sends the same cream taxi you could have hailed, and the price gap between them is small. The differences are in how you get the car and how the fare is set.

Our lean: use the street taxi when you can see one and the destination is a hotel or a mall; use Careem or Uber when you are at a villa, a beach or a restaurant with a name the driver may not know, or when it is 1 AM outside the yacht party and you want the car to come to you. Install the apps before the flight; the apps guide walks through the set-up and the SIM you need for it.

What a taxi costs: typical fares

These are approximate meter fares with light traffic. Rush hour adds 15-30 minutes on Sheikh Zayed Road, and the meter runs on time as well as distance when you are stuck, so an evening ride can come in above the top of the range. Check the estimate in your app before you set off.

Surcharges, rush hours and the small print

The meter is the whole price most of the time. These are the exceptions and the habits that keep a ride at the low end of the range.

  • Airport ranks: the meter starts at about AED 25 instead of AED 5 from the DXB and DWC ranks. It is the same taxi and the same per-km rate afterwards.
  • Sharjah and the other emirates: a small inter-emirate surcharge is added on top of the meter for a trip into Sharjah, so budget AED 40-80 from central Dubai plus the surcharge, and up to an hour at rush hour.
  • Rush hours: 7-9:30 AM and 5-8 PM on Sheikh Zayed Road, Friday and Saturday evenings around Downtown and the Marina, and the Dubai Mall car parks around the Fountain shows after 6 PM. The meter keeps running in a jam.
  • Ladies' taxis: the pink-roofed cars have women drivers, wait at the airport and hotel ranks and can be booked; the fares are the same.
  • Minimum fare: about AED 12, so a 1 km hop between two Marina towers costs AED 12, not AED 7. Walk it or take the tram.
  • Cards: accepted in every taxi. Say so before the ride starts, and keep AED 50 or so in cash for the rare terminal that does not cooperate.
  • Receipts: ask for the printed one. It carries the taxi number, which is what you need if a phone is left on the back seat.

Where to find a taxi: airports, hotels, malls and the street

At DXB follow the taxi signs from arrivals in each terminal; the queue moves quickly and the meter starts at about AED 25. At DWC the rank is outside arrivals and the rides are longer: about AED 100-140 to the Marina and AED 150-200 to Downtown, with no Metro alternative at that airport beyond the F55 bus. Both airports also have pickup points for the apps, and the app shows you which one.

In the city, every hotel has a rank or a doorman who calls a car, every mall has a marked taxi stand, and on the street you hail with a raised hand wherever a car can pull in. The hard moments are predictable: the Dubai Mall stands after a Fountain show, the Marina and JBR on Friday and Saturday nights, and the end of the yacht party at 1 AM. In those three cases book in the app from inside the venue and walk out when the car is two minutes away.

For the desert and Abu Dhabi you do not find the car; it finds you. Our drivers collect you from the hotel lobby at the time agreed on WhatsApp, in Sharjah and Ajman as well as Dubai, and the same vehicle brings you back.

Tipping and etiquette

Tipping is not mandatory anywhere in Dubai, and taxis are the simplest case: round up to the nearest AED 5 or 10 and the driver is pleased. AED 5-10 is the norm for a porter or valet who handles bags, 10-15% in restaurants without a service charge, and tips for a driver-guide on a tour are welcome but never expected. The full picture is in tipping in Dubai.

A few local habits make rides smoother: give the hotel or mall name rather than a street number, have the destination pinned on your phone for a villa or a beach, and do not argue over the route on Sheikh Zayed Road, where the drivers know the exits better than the map does. No smoking and no eating in the car, and stay polite: rude gestures and swearing are offences here, in a taxi as anywhere else.

When the Metro beats a taxi

The taxi loses on exactly one axis: time at rush hour along Sheikh Zayed Road. Downtown to the Marina is 25-40 minutes by car on a clear road and 40-70 in the evening peak; the Red Line from Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall to DMCC ignores all of it for AED 5-7.5. The same is true for DXB to Downtown on a weekday morning, where the train from Terminal 1 or 3 beats the taxi from the rank, and for Mall of the Emirates from either end.

The Metro also wins for a solo traveller with a carry-on and for anyone staying next to a station. It loses at night after the last train (midnight or 1 AM depending on the day), with three or more people, with big luggage, and for the Palm, the beaches and the Creek side of Old Dubai. The overview of all of it, tram and buses included, is in how to get around Dubai; the airport specifics are in DXB to Downtown.

When a tour with pickup beats a taxi

Some trips are simply not taxi trips. The Lahbab Red Dunes are 45-60 km east of the city on the E44: a taxi can drop you at a camp gate, but nobody drives the dunes in a cab and nobody waits on the sand for the return at 10 PM. Our full-day desert safari collects you at your hotel or apartment in Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman in an air-conditioned 4x4 with a licensed English-speaking driver, does the 30-45 minute dune bashing, sandboarding, the camel ride and the sunset, then the BBQ dinner and shows at Al Khayma camp, and drops you back at the hotel: 7 hours from $45 per person, $65 with the 30-minute quad bike, no prepayment.

Abu Dhabi by taxi is AED 250-350 one way and about 1.5 hours before you have seen anything; the mosque, the Mandir, the Corniche and Yas are then more taxis, or a car waiting on the meter. The Abu Dhabi city tour from Dubai is $45 per person for the 8:00 AM hotel pickup, a licensed guide, the Grand Mosque with registration assistance, the BAPS Mandir, the Corniche, Heritage Village and Yas Island, and the drive home. A private car for up to 7 people is $245, about AED 900: roughly the taxi there and back plus a car and guide that stay with you all day. No prepayment either way. The Dubai to Abu Dhabi route compares every option.

The sunrise balloon takes off before the first Metro train runs; the flight ($275) includes the pre-dawn pickup from anywhere in Dubai city and the drop-off after breakfast, and it sells out one to two weeks ahead. The one Marina trip you do take a taxi to is the yacht pier behind Al Majara Tower: about AED 50-70 from Downtown, and the tower name is all the driver needs. The 1-hour shared yacht tour from $32 checks in 20 minutes before departure, and the yacht party boards at 8:30 PM. When the party ends around 1 AM, book the car from the pier in the app; the Metro may already be closed.

FAQ

How much does a taxi cost in Dubai?

About AED 5 flag fall on the street (about AED 25 from an airport rank), then about AED 2 per km, with a minimum fare of around AED 12. Typical rides with light traffic: DXB to Downtown AED 40-60, DXB to the Marina AED 80-110, Downtown to the Marina AED 50-70, the Marina to Atlantis AED 35-50. Check the official RTA site or your app for the current tariff.

Is Uber or Careem cheaper than a taxi in Dubai?

Usually not: Careem and Uber cost about the same as the meter or slightly more, and rise at peak times. Their advantage is the fixed fare and the pinned address, not the price. Hala, inside the Careem app, books a regular RTA taxi at meter rates, which gives you the app without the premium.

How much is a taxi from Dubai airport to Downtown or the Marina?

From DXB, about AED 40-60 to Downtown (15 km, 15-25 minutes, up to 40 in rush hour) and about AED 80-110 to Dubai Marina or JBR (35 km, 35-50 minutes), with the meter starting at about AED 25 at the airport rank. From DWC, budget AED 100-140 to the Marina and AED 150-200 to Downtown.

Do Dubai taxis take credit cards?

Yes, every RTA taxi has a card terminal, and Careem and Uber charge the card in the app. Tell the driver you will pay by card before the ride, and keep a little cash, about AED 50, for the occasional terminal that fails. There is no surcharge for paying by card.

Do you tip taxi drivers in Dubai?

It is not expected. The local habit is to round up the fare to the nearest AED 5 or 10, which on a AED 47 ride means handing over AED 50. In the apps you can add a tip afterwards, but nobody will think less of you for skipping it; the same goes for our tour drivers and guides, where tips are welcome but never required.

How much is a taxi from Dubai to Abu Dhabi?

About AED 250-350 one way for the 140 km, roughly 1.5 hours, and the same again to come back, plus taxis between the sights once you are there. Our Abu Dhabi city tour is $45 per person with the 8:00 AM hotel pickup, a licensed guide and the return drive included, or $245 for a private car for up to 7 people.

Are taxis in Dubai safe at night?

Yes. Dubai is one of the safest big cities for visitors, the taxis are regulated and metered by the RTA, and app rides are tracked in Careem or Uber. Women travelling alone can ask for a pink-roofed ladies' taxi with a woman driver. The only night-time issue is finding a car outside a busy venue, which is exactly what the apps solve.
