Full-Day Desert Safari in Dubai — From $45 per person

Downtown Dubai is the closest of the big hotel districts to Dubai International: about 15 km, straight down Sheikh Zayed Road. A taxi from the rank takes 15-25 minutes and costs about AED 40-60; the Metro Red Line from Terminal 1 or 3 reaches Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station in about 25 minutes for AED 5-7.5, then it is a 10-15 minute walk along the air-conditioned bridge into the mall. With suitcases, the taxi still wins; with one bag, this is the one Dubai transfer where the metro competes on time. Below: how each works, which station your hotel wants, and the first evening under the tower.

How much is a taxi from Dubai Airport to Downtown Dubai?

About AED 40-60 on the meter for the 15 km ride, which takes 15-25 minutes on a normal day and up to 40 in the 7-9:30 AM and 5-8 PM rush. The meter starts at about AED 25 at the airport rank and adds about AED 2 per km; cards are accepted. Careem and Uber cost about the same or slightly more.

The four ways from DXB to Downtown, ranked

Taxi from the airport rank #1
Any terminal, 15-25 minutes Bags, families, late flights, about AED 40-60

Taxi from the airport rank

Short enough that the airport surcharge barely matters. The meter opens at about AED 25 at the rank and adds about AED 2 per km, so the 15 km ride lands at AED 40-60 without traffic and a little more between 7 and 9:30 AM or 5 and 8 PM, when the same trip can take 40 minutes. Cards accepted, and you are dropped at the hotel door instead of the far end of a mall.

Metro Red Line to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall #2
Terminal 1 or 3, about 25 minutes on the train One bag, daytime, about AED 5-7.5 plus the Nol card

Metro Red Line to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall

The cheapest way into the centre of the city and, in rush hour, often the fastest. Stations inside Terminals 1 and 3 put you on a Red Line train that reaches Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall in about 25 minutes; the Metro Link bridge then carries you into the Dubai Mall in 10-15 minutes, air-conditioned and with travelators. Buy a Nol Silver card first, about AED 25 with AED 19 of credit.

Careem, Uber or Hala #3
Booked in the app from arrivals A fare you see before you ride, no queue after a big arrival wave

Careem, Uber or Hala

Same road, same 15-25 minutes, a price similar to or slightly above the metered taxi and the comfort of typing the hotel name once. Careem and Uber both collect from the airport and show the meeting point; Hala inside Careem books a regular RTA taxi. The rank is quicker if your phone has no data yet, which is the usual state of affairs in arrivals.

Metro to Business Bay for the canal hotels #4
One stop past Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Business Bay hotels, usually 10-20% cheaper for the same skyline

Metro to Business Bay for the canal hotels

Many of the hotels sold as Downtown are in Business Bay, the district of towers along the Dubai Water Canal just south of the Burj. Business Bay station is the next stop on the Red Line, the fare is the same AED 5-7.5, and from the exit a taxi at the minimum fare of about AED 12 covers the last kilometre or two to a canal-side lobby faster than the walk.

The short answer: 15 km, and the metro is a real option

With luggage, take a taxi: 15-25 minutes and about AED 40-60 from the rank at any terminal. It is the shortest airport transfer in Dubai, so the AED 25 flag fall at the airport is a smaller share of the fare than it is for the Marina or the Palm, and you arrive at the hotel door rather than at the far end of the Dubai Mall.

With one bag and a daytime arrival, take the metro. The Red Line from Terminal 1 or Terminal 3 reaches Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station in about 25 minutes for about AED 5-7.5 on a Nol card, and the air-conditioned Metro Link bridge walks you into the mall in another 10-15 minutes. Between 7 and 9:30 AM and 5 and 8 PM, when the taxi can take 40 minutes, the train is the faster of the two.

The only bad choice is to arrive at Dubai Mall by taxi at Fountain time: the evening shows start at 6 PM and the car parks around the mall jam with them, so an evening drop-off at a hotel on the lake can crawl for the last kilometre. Ask the driver for the hotel entrance, not the mall.

Every option from DXB to Downtown, compared

Fares and times below are typical for a normal day; the meter also runs on time in traffic, and the Metro fare depends on the zones you cross. Check the RTA app or the machines at the station before you travel.

OptionTimeCostNotes
Taxi from the airport rank15-25 min, up to 40 in rush hourAbout AED 40-60AED 25 flag fall at the airport, about AED 2 per km; cards accepted; pink-roof cars are the ladies' taxis
Careem, Uber or Hala15-25 minSimilar to the taxi or slightly moreFare and meeting point shown in the app; Hala is the RTA taxi booked through Careem
Metro to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, then the bridgeAbout 25 min on the train plus 10-15 minAbout AED 5-7.5, plus AED 25 for the Nol Silver cardStations in Terminals 1 and 3 only; runs from about 5 AM to midnight or 1 AM, from around 8 AM on Sundays
Metro, then a taxi from the stationAbout 25 min plus 5 minAbout AED 5-7.5, plus AED 12-15 for the taxiFor hotels on Burj Lake or with heavy bags: the minimum taxi fare is about AED 12
Metro to Business BayAbout 25-30 min on the trainAbout AED 5-7.5One stop further; for the canal-side hotels that are sold as Downtown
Metro Gold ClassSame trainAbout AED 10-15, double the standard fareThe first carriage, usually with a seat free; needs a Gold card or Gold ticket

Third-party fares and timetables change; check the official RTA site or app on the day.

A hotel car is the most comfortable and the most expensive line you could add to this table, and there is no airport bus to Downtown worth building a plan around. The realistic choice is the taxi or the metro, and the rest of this guide is about doing either well.

Step by step: the Metro from Terminal 1 or 3 to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall

Emirates uses Terminal 3 and most other international airlines use Terminal 1; both terminals have a Red Line station reached under cover from arrivals. Terminal 2, across the airfield, has no metro station, so from there it is a taxi.

  • 1. Follow the Metro signs from arrivals. The station is linked to the terminal, so you never step outside. Leave the trolley at the terminal and keep to one bag per person.
  • 2. Buy a Nol Silver card at the ticket office or a machine: about AED 25, of which AED 19 is credit, enough for this trip, the ride back and a couple of rides in between. The red paper ticket (about AED 2 plus the fare) is only for a single journey.
  • 3. Board a Red Line train heading away from Centrepoint, signed for Expo City or for the UAE Exchange end of the line; both pass through Downtown. Skip the first carriage sections unless you have a Gold ticket or are travelling as women and children.
  • 4. Ride for about 25 minutes. Union and BurJuman, the two interchanges with the Green Line, go by first, then World Trade Centre and Emirates Towers with the Museum of the Future beside the road, and the Burj Khalifa fills the window before the station.
  • 5. Get off at Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall and follow the signs to the Metro Link bridge: 10-15 minutes into the Dubai Mall, air-conditioned, with travelators for most of the way. Station names carry sponsors and change; the Burj on the map does not.
  • 6. From the mall, find your hotel. Hotels on the Burj Lake side are a further walk through the mall or a 5-minute taxi from the station rank (minimum fare about AED 12). For a Business Bay hotel, stay on one more stop and take a taxi from that exit instead.
  • 7. Tap out with the same card. The fare, about AED 5-7.5 for this trip, is charged at the exit gate by the zones you crossed.

Lines, key stations for every sight and the etiquette rules (no food, no Gold Class without the ticket) are in the Dubai Metro guide for tourists.

The taxi: what it costs, and when 15 minutes becomes 40

Follow the taxi signs out of any terminal and join the rank; the cream RTA cars are metered, the meter starts at about AED 25 at the airport and adds about AED 2 per km, and 15 km later you are in Downtown for AED 40-60. Cards are accepted, and rounding up is the tip. Pink-roof cars are the ladies' taxis, driven by women, for women and families.

The route is Sheikh Zayed Road, the spine of the city, and its timing is predictable: 15-25 minutes most of the day, up to 40 between 7 and 9:30 AM and 5 and 8 PM, and slow again on Friday and Saturday evenings around Downtown when the whole city comes to the Fountain. If you land in one of those windows with a single bag, the train is the better bet; if you land at 2 AM, the road is empty and the taxi is the only option, because the metro stops around midnight or 1 AM and starts late on Sundays.

Careem and Uber run from all terminals at similar or slightly higher prices, and the app shows the fare and the pickup point before you commit; Hala, inside the Careem app, sends the same RTA taxi without the queue. The surcharges, the Careem-versus-taxi question and typical fares for every district are in taxis in Dubai.

Which station your hotel wants

Downtown is compact, but the walk from the metro varies from 10 minutes to 30 depending on which side of the Burj your hotel sits, and the answer to that decides taxi or train more than the fare does.

Hotels attached to or beside the Dubai Mall: the metro and the bridge take you straight into the building. This is the best-case scenario and the reason the metro works here at all.

Hotels on Burj Lake and around Burj Park: reachable on foot through the mall, but it is a long walk indoors with a case, and the Fountain crowds fill it in the evening. Metro plus a 5-minute taxi from the station rank, or a taxi from the airport, is the honest advice.

Business Bay: the towers along the Dubai Water Canal just south of Downtown, usually 10-20% cheaper for the same view of the Burj. Business Bay station is one stop further on the Red Line and a taxi from its exit covers the last stretch; the canal promenade and the lit waterfall under the Sheikh Zayed Road bridge are then on your doorstep.

Whichever you choose, the whole district is in the Downtown Dubai area guide, with a day plan that starts the moment you drop the bags.

Your first evening under the Burj

Downtown rewards an evening arrival more than any other district, because the best thing in it is free and starts at 6 PM: the Dubai Fountain on Burj Lake, shows every 30 minutes through the evening, watched from the promenade by the Dubai Mall, the bridge to Souk Al Bahar or the lawns of Burj Park with the classic view of the tower. Dubai Opera and its plaza are a few minutes' walk further along the lake.

The paid view is the choice between At the Top of the Burj Khalifa, from $55 with us and more at sunset, and the cheaper Sky Views Observatory on the Address Sky View across the road; the sunset slots on both go first, so book before you fly if that is the plan. We compare them honestly in Burj Khalifa or Sky Views. Inside the mall, the aquarium tunnel is free to walk past even if you skip the paid ticket, and the 1,200-plus shops stay open late.

If you are here on a layover rather than a holiday, Downtown is the district to aim for: 15 km from the terminal, a 15-25 minute taxi each way, the Fountain and the Burj in one evening. What is realistic in 8, 12 or 24 hours on the ground, including the hour on a yacht at the Marina, is in Dubai on a layover.

From the second day, our tours collect you at the hotel

Downtown is the pickup point most of our guests give us, and the transfers from here are the ones you never have to organise. The full-day desert safari sends an air-conditioned 4x4 to the lobby for the 45-60 minute drive to the Lahbab Red Dunes and brings you back after the dinner and shows at Al Khayma camp, 7 hours in all, from $45 per person or $65 with the 30-minute quad bike. You agree the date on WhatsApp and pay on the day, with no prepayment.

The Abu Dhabi city tour picks up at 8:00 AM for the 1.5-2 hour drive to the Grand Mosque, the BAPS Mandir, the Corniche, Heritage Village and a photo stop at Ferrari World, from $45 with a licensed guide or $245 for a private car for up to 7, also paid on the day. The sunrise balloon collects you before dawn anywhere in Dubai city for $275; it takes a 30% deposit and the baskets sell out one to two weeks ahead, so book it first.

The one trip you do organise yourself from Downtown is the Marina, where our two cruises leave from the pier behind Al Majara Tower: about 25 km, 25-40 minutes by taxi for about AED 50-70, or the Red Line from Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall to DMCC for about AED 5-7.5. The 1-hour shared yacht tour departs hourly from $32 with check-in 20 minutes before, and the timings that make a sunset departure or the 9 PM yacht party work from a Downtown hotel are in Downtown to Dubai Marina.

Back to the airport from Downtown

Outbound, the taxi is a little cheaper because the flag fall is about AED 5 in the city instead of AED 25 at the airport rank: budget AED 40-60 and 15-25 minutes, or up to 40 in the morning and evening rush, and tell the driver the terminal, since Terminal 2 is a separate drive around the airfield. The Red Line in reverse, towards Centrepoint, is about 25 minutes from Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall to the Terminal 3 or Terminal 1 station, plus the 10-15 minute bridge from the mall; with the credit left on your Nol card it costs nothing extra, and in the morning rush it is the more reliable of the two.

FAQ

How much is a taxi from Dubai Airport to Downtown Dubai?

About AED 40-60 on the meter for the 15 km ride, which takes 15-25 minutes on a normal day and up to 40 in the 7-9:30 AM and 5-8 PM rush. The meter starts at about AED 25 at the airport rank and adds about AED 2 per km; cards are accepted. Careem and Uber cost about the same or slightly more.

How long does the Metro take from Dubai Airport to Burj Khalifa?

About 25 minutes on the Red Line from the Terminal 1 or Terminal 3 station to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, then 10-15 minutes on the air-conditioned Metro Link bridge into the Dubai Mall, so 35-45 minutes door to door. The fare is about AED 5-7.5 on a Nol Silver card, which costs about AED 25 including AED 19 of credit.

Which Metro station is closest to Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Mall?

Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall on the Red Line. The station is not inside the mall: the Metro Link bridge, air-conditioned and with travelators, takes 10-15 minutes to walk. Business Bay, the next stop, is closer for the hotels along the Dubai Water Canal.

Is the walk from the Metro to the Dubai Mall air-conditioned?

Yes. The Metro Link bridge from Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station is enclosed and air-conditioned the whole way, with travelators for most of its length, and takes 10-15 minutes at a normal pace. With a heavy suitcase or in the evening crowds it feels longer, which is when a 5-minute taxi from the station rank makes sense.

Does the Dubai Metro run late enough for a night arrival?

Trains run from about 5 AM to midnight or 1 AM depending on the day, and start later on Sundays, around 8 AM; check the RTA app for the current hours. If your flight lands outside them, the taxi rank at every terminal is the answer, and at night the 15 km to Downtown takes closer to 15 minutes than 25.

Can I see Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain on a layover?

Yes, Downtown is the realistic layover district: 15 km from the terminal, a 15-25 minute taxi each way, the free Fountain shows every 30 minutes from 6 PM and the Burj lit above them. We would not try it with less than 6 hours on the ground once immigration and the return check-in are counted, and check before you plan it that your passport lets you enter the UAE on a layover.

Do your tours pick up from Downtown Dubai hotels?

Yes. The desert safari, the Abu Dhabi city tour (8:00 AM) and the sunrise balloon (pre-dawn) all include pickup and drop-off at hotels across Dubai, including Downtown and Business Bay, with the safari and Abu Dhabi day paid on the day. The Marina yacht cruises have no pickup: they meet at the pier behind Al Majara Tower, 25-40 minutes away by taxi.
