From Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall to the Marina is about 25 km down Sheikh Zayed Road. The Red Line to DMCC costs AED 5-7.5 on a Nol card and ignores traffic; a taxi takes 25-40 minutes for around AED 50-70 outside the 5-8 PM rush, which is exactly when most people set off for a sunset cruise. This guide covers both, the last leg to the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower, and the departure times that do not wait: our shared yacht tour leaves on the hour and the yacht party sails at 9:00 PM sharp.

How far is Dubai Marina from Downtown Dubai?
About 25 km along Sheikh Zayed Road. A taxi takes 25-40 minutes and around AED 50-70 on the meter outside the 5-8 PM rush; the Metro Red Line from Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall to DMCC costs AED 5-7.5 on a Nol card and takes about an hour door to door, with a short taxi or a tram-and-walk to the yacht pier at the end.

The ways from Downtown to the Marina, ranked
#1
Metro Red Line
Direct, AED 5-7.5 per person on a Silver Nol card and a train every 3-7 minutes; it is the only option whose timing you can trust between 5 and 8 PM, when the road adds 15-30 minutes. Allow about an hour door to door, including the 10-15 minute Metro Link walk from the mall to the platform.
#2
Taxi or Careem
About 25-40 minutes and around AED 50-70 on the meter with clear roads, which split four ways is metro money. It is the only way home after the yacht party ends around 1:00 AM, and the sensible choice when you are dressed for a night out and do not want the walk over the bridge.
#3
Metro, then a short taxi or the tram to the pier
DMCC is the station for the pier: from there it is a short taxi, or the tram and a 10-20 minute walk through the Marina towers to Marina Walk. The tram runs on the same Nol card. Give yourself 30 minutes for this last leg the first time, because the walk is longer than it looks on the map.
#4
The sunset shared yacht
Our 1-hour shared yacht tour is from $32 per person, runs on the hour and asks for check-in 20 minutes before departure at Level P, Al Majara Tower. Sunset is about 5:30 PM in December and 7:10 PM in June, so the slot moves with the season; the yacht leaves strictly on time.
#5
The yacht party at 9 PM
The Dubai Marina Yacht Party is $99 for four hours with a live DJ, a live BBQ and unlimited soft drinks, 25-45 guests. The yacht does not wait for latecomers, so leave Downtown by 7:00 PM on the metro or by 7:30 PM in a taxi outside the weekend rush.
The short answer: the metro for sunset, a taxi for the way home
For a sunset slot, take the Red Line from Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall (or Business Bay) to DMCC: AED 5-7.5, no changes, and no exposure to the 5-8 PM Sheikh Zayed Road rush that sits exactly on top of golden hour. Allow about an hour door to door, then a short taxi or a tram-and-walk to the pier.
For the way back after the yacht party, or whenever there are three or four of you, take a taxi: 25-40 minutes and around AED 50-70 on the meter with clear roads. The party ends around 1:00 AM, when the last train may already have gone.
Below: the comparison, the metro step by step, the last leg to the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower, and a table of departure times to work backwards from.
Downtown to Dubai Marina: the options compared
Downtown is inland on Sheikh Zayed Road and the Marina is on the coast about 25 km south-west; the metro and the road run side by side the whole way, which is why the choice is about traffic and people, not route.
| Option | Time | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metro Red Line to DMCC or Sobha Realty | About 1 hour door to door | AED 5-7.5 per person (Silver Nol); Gold Class double | Unaffected by traffic; trains every 3-7 minutes until about midnight or 1 AM |
| Taxi (street or Hala) | 25-40 min; 40-70 min in the 5-8 PM rush | About AED 50-70 on the meter | Door to the pier; taxis take cards |
| Careem or Uber | As a taxi | Similar or slightly higher, fixed in the app | Pin the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower as the drop-off |
| Metro, then tram to the Marina | Adds 15-30 minutes with the walk | Same Nol card, a few dirhams more | Tram meets the Red Line at DMCC and Sobha Realty |
Fares and timetables are third-party and change; budget with these and check the RTA or Careem app on the day.
If you are driving a hire car, Marina Mall offers three hours of free parking a short walk from the pier: enough for the shared hour, not for the four-hour party.
Step by step: the Red Line from Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall to DMCC
This is the run for a sunset cruise or the party. From a Business Bay hotel start one stop earlier at Business Bay station; the rest is identical.
- 1. Leave the mall early. The Metro Link bridge from the Dubai Mall to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station is a 10-15 minute walk on travelators; build it into your departure time, not your arrival time.
- 2. Nol card. A Silver card is about AED 25 with AED 19 of credit; a red paper ticket is about AED 2 plus the fare. The fare is charged by zone on exit: Downtown to the Marina is 2-3 zones, AED 5-7.5 on a Silver card.
- 3. Board in the Jabal Ali and Expo City direction, away from the airport. The first carriage sections are Gold Class (double fare) and women-and-children only; the rest of the train is open to everyone.
- 4. Get off at DMCC, the Marina/JLT stop nearest the yacht pier. Sobha Realty is the next Marina station and also works if your hotel is at that end. Station sponsor names change, so look for the Marina/JLT signs.
- 5. Exit on the Marina side and either take a taxi outside the station, a short ride to Al Majara Tower, or the tram towards the Marina and JBR, then walk to Marina Walk. Both are fine; the taxi is quicker at 40°C.
- 6. Find the pier. Level P of Al Majara Tower for the shared yacht tour, the marina lounge on the marina level for private charters, and the pier behind the tower for the party, with the exact meeting point sent on booking.
The full station list, fares and the Gold Class question are in our Dubai Metro guide; the reverse trip, with the Dubai Fountain timings, is in Marina to Burj Khalifa.
Working backwards from the departure time
The Marina end has three clocks that do not wait. Our yachts leave on the booked minute, so we plan the trip from the departure backwards, and these are the times we give guests staying in Downtown.
| Departure | Be at the pier | Leave Downtown by metro | Leave Downtown by taxi |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared yacht, the 5 PM slot (December sunset about 5:30 PM) | 4:40 PM, check-in at Level P | 3:30 PM | 3:45 PM, off-peak |
| Shared yacht, the 7 PM slot (June sunset about 7:10 PM) | 6:40 PM | 5:30 PM | 5:15 PM, or take the metro: rush hour |
| Yacht party, sails 9:00 PM | 8:30 PM boarding | 7:00 PM | 7:30 PM outside the weekend rush |
| Private charter, any slot | 20-30 minutes before | Slot minus 1 h 45 min | Slot minus 1 h 15 min |
Sunset moves through the year; pick the shared slot that starts about half an hour before sunset so the return leg is in the golden light. We confirm the exact slot on WhatsApp.
Two rules make the timing painless. First, sunset slots sell out first on both the shared yacht and the private charters, so book the day before at the latest; the shared hour and the party are paid in advance, which is what holds the seat, while a private charter is confirmed with the marina before any payment. Second, in the 5-8 PM rush the taxi's 25-40 minutes becomes 40-70; if your departure is between 5 and 8 PM, the metro is the safer bet even in a dress, and a short taxi from DMCC keeps the last leg cool.
The last leg: DMCC station to the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower
The pier is in the heart of the Marina, behind Al Majara Tower on the Marina Walk side. From DMCC station it is a short taxi ride; on foot from the tram it is a 10-20 minute walk between the towers and along the water. The first time, give it 30 minutes.
Three details save a scramble. The shared yacht tour checks in at Level P of Al Majara Tower, 20 minutes before departure, shoes off before boarding and an original passport or Emirates ID for every guest under Coast Guard rules. The yacht party meets at the pier behind the tower at 8:30 PM, 21+ with an original ID, smart casual, and the exact pier location is sent when you book. Private charters board at the marina lounge on the marina level 20-30 minutes before the slot, with a passport copy on every phone.
One exception to all of this: the superyachts marked Dubai Harbour in our fleet leave from Dubai Harbour, the superyacht marina next to Bluewaters Island, not from the Marina pier. For those, a taxi from Downtown straight to Dubai Harbour is simpler than the metro, and we send the berth details with the confirmation.
Our guide to reaching the yacht pier has the walking directions from the tram, the taxi drop-off point and the Marina Mall parking. If you are staying in the Marina afterwards, the Marina area guide covers Marina Walk and the JBR beach next door.
When a taxi beats the train
Late night is the obvious one. The yacht party finishes around 1:00 AM, and the metro closes around midnight or 1 AM depending on the day; do not plan on it. Taxis wait at the Marina ranks and the apps work at any hour; budget about AED 50-70 back to Downtown, and expect the Marina roads to be busy on Friday and Saturday nights.
Groups are the other. Four people in one taxi pay AED 15-20 each door to door, in air conditioning, with no bridge to walk. If you have booked a private charter for a group, a couple of taxis from the same Downtown hotel is the least stressful way to arrive together; pin the pier as the destination in Careem, Uber or Hala rather than explaining it to the driver.
Heat is the third. From May to September the tram-and-walk at 2 PM is hard work; a taxi from DMCC to the pier is a short hop at about the minimum fare, AED 12 or so, and saves the sweat. In the cooler months, November to March, the walk along the water is one of the pleasures of the district.
Once you are in the Marina: what the trip is for
The Marina is the canal city: a 7 km loop of Marina Walk lined with cafés, the twisted Cayan Tower, Pier 7 and Marina Mall, with JBR Beach and The Walk a 10-20 minute stroll or a tram ride away, and Bluewaters Island with Ain Dubai across the footbridge. Sunset from the water is the thing people come for, and it is why every cruise here is built around golden hour.
The 1-hour shared yacht tour runs the Marina canal, along JBR and Bluewaters, stops in front of Ain Dubai for photos and returns with the whole skyline lit; from $32 per person with chilled water on board and the crew helping with photos. The yacht party does the long night version, around the Palm lagoon to the Burj Al Arab photo stop and back by 1:00 AM.
For a group, a private charter from the same pier starts from AED 400 per hour for a 31 ft boat and runs up to superyachts; a 2-hour slot covers the Marina, JBR, Bluewaters and Ain Dubai, and 3 hours add the Palm lagoon with a swim stop. Send us the group size, hours and date on WhatsApp and we check the boat with the marina and confirm the time and the total before any payment. Sunset by month and which boat suits which group are in our sunset cruise guide. If you are still deciding which side of the city to sleep on, Marina vs Downtown is the honest comparison.
And for the days that are not about the water, none of this applies. The full-day desert safari collects you at your Downtown hotel in an air-conditioned 4x4 and brings you back after the camp, from $45 with no prepayment; the Abu Dhabi day and the sunrise balloon include the pickup too. The yachts are the only thing we ask you to travel to, and the pier is worth the trip.
FAQ
How far is Dubai Marina from Downtown Dubai?
About 25 km along Sheikh Zayed Road. A taxi takes 25-40 minutes and around AED 50-70 on the meter outside the 5-8 PM rush; the Metro Red Line from Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall to DMCC costs AED 5-7.5 on a Nol card and takes about an hour door to door, with a short taxi or a tram-and-walk to the yacht pier at the end.
What time should I leave Downtown for a sunset yacht cruise in the Marina?
Work back from the slot: check-in is 20 minutes before departure at Level P, Al Majara Tower. Sunset is about 5:30 PM in December and about 7:10 PM in June, so for a 5 PM December departure leave Downtown by 3:30 PM on the metro; for a 7 PM June departure leave by 5:30 PM, and take the metro rather than a taxi because the road is in rush hour.
How do I get from DMCC metro station to the yacht pier behind Al Majara Tower?
A short taxi ride, or the tram towards the Marina and JBR followed by a 10-20 minute walk through the towers to Marina Walk. Allow 30 minutes the first time. The shared yacht checks in at Level P of Al Majara Tower, the party meets at the pier behind the tower, and the exact spot is sent when you book.
Can I take the metro back to Downtown after the yacht party?
Do not count on it. The party ends around 1:00 AM and the metro stops around midnight or 1 AM depending on the day. Plan a taxi: about AED 50-70 back to Downtown on the meter, and Careem, Uber and Hala all work at that hour. Marina roads are busy on Friday and Saturday nights, so allow a few extra minutes.
Is a taxi or the metro cheaper from Downtown to Dubai Marina?
The metro is cheaper for one or two people at AED 5-7.5 each. A taxi at around AED 50-70 works out at AED 15-20 a head for four, door to door with no walk over the Metro Link bridge, so from three people upwards the difference is small and the taxi wins on comfort, except in the 5-8 PM rush when the train wins on time.
Where do the yachts leave from in Dubai Marina?
From the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower on the Marina Walk side, a short taxi from DMCC metro station. The shared 1-hour tour checks in at Level P of the tower 20 minutes before departure; the yacht party boards at the pier at 8:30 PM and sails at 9:00 PM; private charters board at the marina lounge 20-30 minutes before their slot. Superyachts marked Dubai Harbour leave from Dubai Harbour next to Bluewaters instead.
Do I need my passport for the yacht?
Yes. The shared yacht tour and the party require an original passport or Emirates ID for every guest under Coast Guard rules, and the party is strictly 21+ with no exceptions. On a private charter a copy on your phone is enough. Bring socks too: shoes come off before boarding on every boat.
