Dubai Marina is a man-made canal ringed by towers, with the 7 km Marina Walk around the water, JBR Beach a 10-20 minute walk away and the yacht pier behind Al Majara Tower in the middle, where our shared yacht tour leaves every hour from $32. Two Red Line stations, DMCC and Sobha Realty, and the 11-stop tram make it the easiest district in Dubai to get around without a car. This guide covers how to arrive, what is worth doing, where to eat, which hour of the day the Marina is at its best and who should stay here.

The Marina, ranked: what is worth your time

Marina Walk #1
The 7 km promenade around the canal Sunset strolls, waterfront dinners, free

Marina Walk

The loop around the water at canal level, past the moored yachts, the cafés and the base of the towers. Free, flat and lit in the evening; the full 7 km takes about 1.5 hours at a stroll, the stretch from Marina Mall towards JBR about 20 minutes. Walk it early in the morning or after sunset in the hot months.

The yacht pier behind Al Majara Tower #2
Level P, Al Majara Tower, mid-canal The $32 hour, the $99 party, private charters

The yacht pier behind Al Majara Tower

Where the Marina goes onto the water. The shared yacht tour leaves every hour from $32 a person with check-in 20 minutes before, the 21+ yacht party boards at 8:30 PM for the 9 PM to 1 AM night at $99, and private boats from 31 to 150 ft start from AED 400 per hour with captain and crew included. DMCC is the nearest metro station.

JBR: the beach, The Beach and The Walk #3
Next door on the sea side, 10-20 min on foot Swimming, casual dining, beach sunsets

JBR: the beach, The Beach and The Walk

Jumeirah Beach Residence is the row of towers between the Marina and the sea, and JBR Beach is the wide public beach in front of it. The Beach is the open-air mall on the sand, The Walk the pavement strip of cafés behind it. Two tram stops from the Marina, and the place to swim on a Marina day.

Bluewaters Island and Ain Dubai #4
Across the footbridge from JBR The wheel photo, the Wharf, an evening walk

Bluewaters Island and Ain Dubai

The island off JBR carries Ain Dubai, the observation wheel that is the landmark of every photo from this side of the city, plus the restaurants of the Wharf. Walk over the footbridge from the beach for the closest land view; from the water, every one of our cruises stops in front of it for photos.

Dubai Marina Mall and Pier 7 #5
The mall end of the canal Hot afternoons, dinner with a view, free parking

Dubai Marina Mall and Pier 7

A compact mall at the canal's end for the air-conditioned hours of the afternoon, with the round Pier 7 restaurant tower beside it, one restaurant per floor with terraces over the water. Three hours of parking are free, which is why it is the place to leave the car if you are driving to a cruise from the pier.

The skyline photo spots #6
Cayan Tower, the promenade, the water Photographers, golden hour

The skyline photo spots

Cayan Tower, the twisted one, is best from the promenade directly opposite; the whole wall of towers is best from the water, which is what the shared hour is for; and the Marina as a skyline is best from JBR Beach or Bluewaters at sunset, when the glass turns gold and the lights come on behind it.

What Dubai Marina is, in three sentences

Dubai Marina is a man-made canal cut in from the Gulf and lined on both banks with some of the tallest residential towers in the city, with yachts moored down the middle. It is the district where Dubai lives outdoors: a 7 km promenade around the water, JBR Beach on the sea side, the tram running through, and the pier our cruises leave from in the centre of it. It sits at the south-western end of the city, about 35 km from DXB and 25 km from Downtown, with the Palm 12-15 km up the coast.

The Marina is the canal and the towers; JBR, Jumeirah Beach Residence, is the beachfront row of buildings between the canal and the sea, and the two are a 10-20 minute walk or a tram ride apart. Bluewaters Island with Ain Dubai is across the footbridge from JBR, and Dubai Harbour, the superyacht marina and cruise terminal, lies beyond it. Visitors say Marina for the whole cluster; residents mean the canal.

Getting there and getting around

Two Red Line stations serve the district: DMCC and Sobha Realty, the Marina/JLT stops (sponsor names change, so look for the Marina on the map rather than the name). From either, the Dubai Tram takes over: 11 stops along Al Sufouh Road, the Marina and JBR, with the JBR stops putting you at The Walk and the beach and the Palm Jumeirah stop connecting to the Palm Monorail. You need a Nol card for all of it, about AED 25 for a Silver card including AED 19 of credit; a ride from Downtown is 2-3 zones, roughly AED 5-7.5.

Taxis are metered: flag fall about AED 5, about AED 2 per km, minimum fare about AED 12, and Careem, Uber and the Hala app run at similar prices. Inside the district you rarely need one, because the promenade and the tram cover it; between districts a taxi usually wins on time. Check the fare in the app before you go, and allow for the rush hours on Sheikh Zayed Road, 7-9:30 AM and 5-8 PM, which add 15-30 minutes to any trip in or out.

The eight things worth doing

The Marina is not a sights district; it is a place you use. These are the things that justify a day or an evening here, roughly in the order we would do them.

  • Marina Walk. The 7 km loop around the canal at water level, past the moored yachts, the cafés and the towers, free and lit in the evening. Walk the full loop in about 1.5 hours, or the stretch from Marina Mall towards JBR in about 20 minutes.
  • The yacht pier behind Al Majara Tower. Our shared yacht tour leaves every hour from $32 a person, the yacht party boards at 8:30 PM for $99, and the private charters from AED 400 per hour start here too. The next section has the detail.
  • JBR Beach, The Beach and The Walk. Two tram stops or a 10-20 minute walk away: a wide public beach, the open-air mall on the sand and the pavement strip of cafés behind it. The JBR guide covers the beach side properly.
  • Bluewaters Island and Ain Dubai. Cross the footbridge from JBR for the closest land view of Ain Dubai, the observation wheel in every photo from this side of the city, and the restaurants of the Wharf.
  • Dubai Marina Mall and Pier 7. The compact mall at the canal's end for air-conditioned hours in the afternoon heat, with the round Pier 7 restaurant tower beside it. Three hours of parking are free, which matters if you are driving to a cruise.
  • The skyline photos. Cayan Tower, the twisted one, from the promenade opposite; the whole wall of towers from the water on any cruise; the Marina as a skyline from JBR Beach or Bluewaters at sunset.
  • Skydive Dubai and the XLine zipline. Both operate from the Marina for anyone who wants the district from above; book ahead on their official sites.
  • Dubai Harbour. Beyond Bluewaters: the superyacht marina and cruise terminal, and the departure point for the largest boats in our fleet, the superyachts.

The yacht pier: what leaves from behind Al Majara Tower

The pier behind Al Majara Tower, in the middle of the canal, is the reason many of our guests choose the Marina in the first place. Three things leave from here, and they are different products for different evenings.

The shared yacht tour is one hour on a premium yacht, from $32 a person, with departures every hour through the day. Check-in is at Level P of Al Majara Tower 20 minutes before your slot, shoes come off before boarding, and the route runs through the Marina canal, along JBR and Bluewaters to a photo stop in front of Ain Dubai and back along the skyline. Children of all ages are welcome, chilled water is included, and every guest needs an original passport or Emirates ID for the Coast Guard. It is paid in full in advance because the hourly slots sell out, and the yacht leaves strictly on time.

The yacht party is the 21+ night: boarding at 8:30 PM at the same pier, departure at 9:00 PM sharp, back around 1:00 AM, $99 all in with a live DJ, a live BBQ and unlimited soft drinks, and a route that goes further, around the Palm lagoon to the Burj Al Arab photo stop. Smart casual, original ID, no waiting for latecomers.

Private charters board at the marina lounge on the marina level of the tower, 20-30 minutes before the slot. The Sealine is a 31 ft boat for 6 guests from AED 400 per hour with a 3-hour minimum; the Orion is 48 ft for 12 guests from AED 800 per hour with a 2-hour minimum; the fleet goes up to 150 ft superyachts. Captain, crew, fuel, water, ice and soft drinks are included, you bring your own drinks and dry snacks, the sunset slot is the one to book first, and we confirm the boat with the marina before you pay anything.

Getting to the pier step by step, with the Marina Mall parking and the tram stop, is in how to get to the yacht departure.

Where to eat and drink

The Marina eats at the water. Marina Walk is lined at canal level with cafés and restaurants from breakfast until late, family-friendly and easy, and the terraces facing the yachts are the ones to sit at after sunset. Pier 7, the round tower beside Marina Mall, stacks a restaurant on every floor with views over the canal, and is the natural address for dinner before the 8:30 PM boarding of the yacht party.

JBR does the casual side: The Walk, the pavement strip behind the beach, for burgers, shawarma and ice cream at any hour, and The Beach, the open-air mall on the sand, for a table with the sea in front of it. Alcohol is served only in licensed venues, which in practice means the hotel restaurants and bars along JBR, the Marina and Bluewaters, and only to guests aged 21 and over. Tipping is not mandatory; 10-15% is normal in restaurants that do not add a service charge, and rounding up is enough in a taxi.

For a cheaper dinner, residents cross Sheikh Zayed Road to JLT, the tower cluster served by the same two metro stations, where the same kind of food usually costs less than on the waterfront. It is a short walk from either station.

The Marina by time of day

The district changes character every few hours, and the best plan follows the light and the temperature. Sunset is about 5:30 PM in December and about 7:10 PM in June. In the season, November to March, days run 20-30°C and the promenade is pleasant from morning to night; from May to September, at 38-45°C, the Marina lives indoors and on the water until the sun drops.

TimeWhat it is likeDo this
Early morning, 7-9 AMCool, quiet, joggers, the yachts still mooredWalk the full 7 km loop; coffee on the water
Late morningBeach hoursTram to JBR, swim at the flagged beach
AfternoonThe hottest hours, quiet outdoorsMarina Mall, a daytime shared yacht hour, or the tram and monorail to the Palm
Golden hour and sunsetThe best light on the towersBe on the water: the sunset shared hour or a private charter, booked ahead
Evening, 7-9 PMTerraces fill, the towers light upDinner on Marina Walk or at Pier 7; 8:30 PM boarding for the party
NightPromenade busy until lateThe yacht party until 1 AM, or the Bluewaters footbridge for Ain Dubai lit up

If you can be on the water only once, make it the sunset slot: the towers turn gold on the way out and light up on the way back, and it is the hour every private charter guest asks for, so book it first.

A sample Marina day

One day, no car, ending on the water. Everything here is on foot or by tram; nothing needs a taxi.

  • 8:00 AM. Coffee on Marina Walk, then the loop around the canal while it is cool: the full 7 km takes about 1.5 hours, the stretch towards JBR about 20 minutes.
  • 10:00 AM. Tram or walk to JBR Beach for a swim, with the cafés of The Beach when you come out.
  • 1:00 PM. Lunch on The Walk, then the footbridge to Bluewaters for the Ain Dubai photo and a look at the Wharf.
  • 3:00 PM. The heat hour indoors: Marina Mall, or the tram to the Palm Jumeirah stop and the monorail up to Atlantis, about 15 minutes each way.
  • Sunset. The shared yacht tour, booked for the slot before sunset; check in at Level P 20 minutes early with your passport or Emirates ID.
  • 7:30 PM. Dinner on Marina Walk or at Pier 7, or, for the 21+, straight to the pier for 8:30 PM boarding on the yacht party, back around 1 AM.

Swap the sunset hour for a private boat if you are a group: a 3-hour charter on a 40 ft boat like the Tres, from AED 400 per hour for up to 10 guests, adds the Palm lagoon and a swim stop in daylight before the light goes. Swimming is at anchor and only while the Coast Guard allows it, around 7 PM in summer and 5 PM in winter.

Who should stay in the Marina, and who should not

Stay here if the beach, the promenade and the evenings on the water are the point of the trip: families (JBR Beach, the tram, and the hour on a yacht works for every age), couples who want sunset dinners without taxis, and anyone booking the yacht party or a private charter. The hotel choice is between a canal-side tower in the Marina and a beachfront one in JBR with the sand at the door; Dubai Marina vs JBR weighs the two.

Do not stay here if the trip is 2-3 nights of landmarks: the Burj Khalifa and the Fountain are 25 km away, and you would spend an hour a day in transit. Old Dubai lovers and the tightest budgets are better on the Creek, and the airport run is the longest in the city at about 35 km. For the wider choice see where to stay in Dubai and Dubai Marina vs Downtown.

Whichever tower you pick, our other tours come to the door. The full-day desert safari collects you at the hotel in an air-conditioned 4x4 for the 45-60 minute drive to the Lahbab dunes, from $45 with no prepayment, and drops you back after the evening programme; the Abu Dhabi day picks up at 8:00 AM. The Marina is a comfortable base for both, and a walk on the promenade is the right way to end either.

Is Dubai Marina walkable?

Yes, it is the most walkable district in Dubai: the 7 km Marina Walk loops the whole canal at water level, JBR is a 10-20 minute walk on the sea side, and the tram covers anything further. In summer, from May to September, walk early or after sunset; the promenade has shade in places, but 40°C is still 40°C.
