Dubai Marina Shared Yacht Tour — From $32 per person

Palm Jumeirah is the man-made island shaped like a palm tree off the coast between Dubai Marina and Jumeirah: a trunk with the monorail, fronds of villas and private beaches, and a crescent of resorts with Atlantis The Palm at the top. It is a resort holiday rather than a sightseeing base, 12-15 km from the Marina and about 25 km from Downtown, with no metro and a taxi for most trips. This guide covers Atlantis and Aquaventure, The View, Palm West Beach and The Pointe, how the monorail and tram work, and why the Palm looks best from the water on a private charter or the yacht party.

What is there to do on Palm Jumeirah?

Aquaventure waterpark and The Lost Chambers aquarium at Atlantis, The View at The Palm on the 52nd floor (about AED 70-100), Palm West Beach for the sunset, The Pointe with the free Palm Fountain shows and dinner facing Atlantis, and the monorail up the trunk (about 15 minutes, roughly AED 20-30 return). The best view of the island is from the water: a 3-hour private charter from AED 400 per hour sails into the lagoon with a swim stop.

The Palm, ranked: what is worth the taxi

Atlantis The Palm and Aquaventure #1
The top of the crescent Waterpark days, families

Atlantis The Palm and Aquaventure

The pink resort at the top of the crescent and its waterpark, the big day out on the island and the reason many families come to the Palm at all. Tickets are sold online by date and prices change with the season, so check the official site and book ahead; arrive at opening for the slides before the queues and the heat, and give it the whole day.

The View at The Palm #2
52nd floor of the Palm Tower, about AED 70-100 The palm shape from above

The View at The Palm

The observation deck on the 52nd floor of the Palm Tower on the trunk, about AED 70-100 a ticket, and the only place on land where the palm shape makes sense: the fronds, the lagoon, the crescent and Atlantis in front of you, Dubai Harbour and the Marina skyline behind. Late afternoon has the best light on the fronds.

The Lost Chambers Aquarium #3
Inside Atlantis Hot afternoons, children

The Lost Chambers Aquarium

The aquarium inside Atlantis, themed as the sunken city, with the Ambassador Lagoon window as its centrepiece: shoals of fish and rays over the ruins. It is indoors and air-conditioned, which makes it the natural afternoon after a morning in the waterpark, or the wet-weather and 40°C plan for a family staying on the island.

The Palm Monorail #4
Gateway station to Atlantis, about 15 minutes The cheapest ride with a view

The Palm Monorail

The elevated line up the trunk from the Gateway station at its base, by the tram stop, to Atlantis Aquaventure: about 15 minutes and roughly AED 20-30 return, with the fronds and the villas on both sides through the windows. It is the only public transport on the island and the best free view of the Palm short of a ticket for The View.

The Pointe and the Palm Fountain #5
The end of the trunk, facing Atlantis Free evening fountain shows, dinner with the Atlantis view

The Pointe and the Palm Fountain

The restaurant promenade at the end of the trunk looks straight across the water at Atlantis, and the Palm Fountain in front of it plays free shows in the evening. It is the island's version of the Downtown Fountain-and-dinner evening: take a table facing the water at dusk and watch the crescent light up behind the fountain.

The Palm from the sea #6
The lagoon and the crescent from a yacht The 3-hour charter, the yacht party route

The Palm from the sea

The island was built to be seen from the water. A 3-hour private charter from Dubai Marina, from AED 400 per hour for the boat, sails into the lagoon between the fronds and the crescent with a swim stop at anchor; 4 hours adds Atlantis and the Burj Al Arab from the sea; the 21+ yacht party does the lagoon lit up at night for $99.

What Palm Jumeirah is, in three sentences

Palm Jumeirah is a man-made island in the shape of a palm tree, off the coast between Dubai Marina and Jumeirah: a trunk carrying the road, the monorail, Nakheel Mall and Palm West Beach; fronds lined with villas and private beaches; and an outer crescent, the breakwater, with the resort hotels and Atlantis The Palm at its top. It is a resort holiday, not a sightseeing base, with no metro and taxis for most trips. Atlantis is 12-15 km from the Marina (20-30 minutes), about 25 km from Downtown (25-35 minutes) and about 35 km from DXB (30-45 minutes).

The island is also the reason people book boats in Dubai. The shape you see in every aerial photo only makes sense from above, at The View at The Palm, or from the water, where the 3-hour private charters and the yacht party sail into the lagoon between the fronds and the crescent, and the 4-hour routes continue to Atlantis and the Burj Al Arab from the sea.

Getting there and around: monorail, tram, taxi

There is no metro on the Palm. The public-transport route is the Dubai Tram to the Palm Jumeirah stop, then the Palm Monorail from the Gateway station at the base of the trunk up to Atlantis Aquaventure: about 15 minutes, roughly AED 20-30 return, with the best free view of the fronds and the crescent through the windows. From the Marina that is a tram and a monorail; from Downtown it is the Red Line to DMCC or Sobha Realty first, which is why most people take a taxi from anywhere but the Marina.

Taxis are metered, about AED 2 per km with a flag fall of about AED 5, and Careem, Uber and Hala run at similar prices. Inside the island a taxi is the only practical way to reach the fronds or the crescent hotels; the monorail serves the trunk and Atlantis only. Check the app for the fare, and allow for the 7-9:30 AM and 5-8 PM rush hours on Sheikh Zayed Road on any trip to Downtown.

Atlantis, Aquaventure and The Lost Chambers

Atlantis The Palm is the pink resort at the top of the crescent, and its two attractions are open to day visitors. Aquaventure is the waterpark, the big day out for families and the reason many people come to the Palm at all; tickets are sold online by date and prices change with the season, so check the official site and book ahead, and arrive at opening to get the slides before the queues and the heat. The Lost Chambers is the aquarium themed as the sunken city, with the Ambassador Lagoon window as its centrepiece; it is indoors, which makes it the natural afternoon after a morning in the park.

Budget a full day for Aquaventure and combine The Lost Chambers with lunch inside the resort rather than crossing the island twice. If you are not staying at Atlantis, the monorail ends at its door. The classic photo of the building is not from the land at all: it is from the water, which the yacht party delivers lit up at night and every 4-hour private charter delivers by day.

The View, Palm West Beach, The Pointe and Nakheel Mall

The View at The Palm is the observation deck on the 52nd floor of the Palm Tower on the trunk, about AED 70-100 a ticket (we can book it on request on WhatsApp), and the only place on land where the palm shape is visible: the fronds, the lagoon, the crescent and Atlantis in front of you, Dubai Harbour and the Marina skyline behind. Late afternoon gives the best light on the fronds. The Palm Tower stands on Nakheel Mall, which has a monorail stop and the air-conditioned lunch options for the trunk.

Palm West Beach is the public stretch on the sunset side of the trunk, a promenade of beach clubs and restaurants facing the Marina skyline across the water: free to walk and swim, paid to lounge, and the Palm's best sunset on land. The Pointe is at the end of the trunk facing Atlantis across the water, with restaurants and the Palm Fountain, whose evening shows are free, so it is the island's Fountain-and-dinner evening in the same way Souk Al Bahar is Downtown's. Both are a short taxi from any Palm hotel.

The Palm from the sea: why it is on every yacht route

The Palm was built to be seen from above and from the water, and on the water is where our guests see it. The shared yacht hour from $32 does not reach it: that route is the Marina canal, JBR, Bluewaters and Ain Dubai. The Palm begins with the 3-hour private charter, which adds the lagoon between the fronds and the crescent with a swim stop at anchor, and the 4-hour charter, which continues past Atlantis to the Burj Al Arab and back. The yacht party ($99, 21+, 9 PM to 1 AM) does the Palm lagoon lit up at night on the way to its Burj Al Arab photo stop.

The maths for a group is simple because the rate is per hour for the whole boat. The Sealine, a 31 ft boat for 6 guests, is from AED 400 per hour with a 3-hour minimum: AED 1,200 for the Palm loop, AED 200 a head with six on board. The Tres takes 10 guests at the same rate, AED 120 a head for the same three hours. For a cabin and a proper deck, the Orion is 48 ft for 12 guests from AED 800 per hour, and the Daphne 53 ft for 17 guests from AED 1,000 per hour. Captain, crew, fuel, water, ice and soft drinks are included; you bring your own drinks (21+ for alcohol) and dry snacks, and catering with a chef can be added in advance.

Practicalities: the charters board at the marina lounge on the marina level of Al Majara Tower in Dubai Marina, 20-30 minutes before the slot, a 20-30 minute taxi from the Palm hotels. Every guest needs a copy of a passport or Emirates ID on their phone, and a security pre-authorisation of AED 2,000-15,000, depending on the boat, is held on a card at check-in and released after the trip. Swimming is in daylight only, at anchor, within three metres of the yacht; the Coast Guard closes it around 7 PM in summer and 5 PM in winter, so in December a 3-hour charter that wants both the swim and the sunset should start around 2:30 PM. Sunset is the most requested slot, and we confirm the boat with the marina before any payment. How many hours to rent a yacht has the route-by-route breakdown.

The Palm by time of day

The island runs on the heat. From November to March, at 20-30°C, everything works all day; from May to September, at 38-45°C with the sea up to 33°C, the day is a morning in the water, an afternoon indoors and an evening outside. Sunset is about 5:30 PM in December and about 7:10 PM in June.

A sample Palm day

One full day on the island from a Marina or Palm hotel, without the waterpark, ending on the water. Taxis are short; the monorail is for the view.

  • 9:00 AM. Tram from the Marina to the Palm Jumeirah stop, monorail from the Gateway station up the trunk: about 15 minutes with the fronds on both sides, off at Nakheel Mall.
  • 9:30 AM. The View at The Palm (about AED 70-100) in the clear morning air, then a walk along Palm West Beach before it gets hot.
  • 12:00 PM. Monorail to the top: lunch at Atlantis and The Lost Chambers for the hottest hours.
  • Mid-afternoon. Taxi to the marina lounge at Al Majara Tower, 20-30 minutes, for a 3-hour private charter that starts about 3.5 hours before sunset (5:30 PM in December, 7:10 PM in June): the swim stop in the lagoon first, while the Coast Guard still allows it, then the crescent and Atlantis as the lights come on. A 31 ft Sealine for six from AED 400 per hour, or the Orion for twelve.
  • Evening. Dinner at The Pointe with the free Palm Fountain shows and Atlantis lit across the water, or, for the 21+, a taxi to the pier for 8:30 PM boarding on the yacht party, which sails the lagoon at night.
  • Aquaventure is a day on its own: at opening, booked online for the date, with The Lost Chambers as the indoor afternoon and The Pointe for the evening.

Who should stay on the Palm, and how our tours fit

Stay on the Palm if the holiday is the resort: a private beach, a pool, breakfast facing the sea, and children who would spend every day in the water. Honeymooners and couples who want quiet evenings do well here too. Do not stay on the Palm if you want to be out in the city every night, if the budget is tight, or if you plan to use the metro: every evening in the Marina or Downtown is a 20-35 minute taxi each way, and most restaurants are inside the resorts. Dubai Marina vs Palm Jumeirah and Downtown vs Palm Jumeirah go through the trade-offs, and where to stay in Dubai covers all six areas.

Our tours treat the Palm as any other Dubai address. The full-day desert safari collects you at your Palm hotel in an air-conditioned 4x4 for the drive to the Lahbab dunes, about 45-60 minutes from most Dubai hotels and a little longer from the island, from $45 for 7 hours with no prepayment; the Abu Dhabi city tour picks up at 8:00 AM, also with no prepayment; the sunrise balloon collects you before dawn anywhere in Dubai city. For the water, the pier behind Al Majara Tower is a 20-30 minute taxi: check in 20 minutes before a shared hour, 8:30 PM for the party, and 20-30 minutes before a charter at the marina lounge.

FAQ

What is there to do on Palm Jumeirah?

Aquaventure waterpark and The Lost Chambers aquarium at Atlantis, The View at The Palm on the 52nd floor (about AED 70-100), Palm West Beach for the sunset, The Pointe with the free Palm Fountain shows and dinner facing Atlantis, and the monorail up the trunk (about 15 minutes, roughly AED 20-30 return). The best view of the island is from the water: a 3-hour private charter from AED 400 per hour sails into the lagoon with a swim stop.

How do I get to Atlantis from Dubai Marina?

By taxi it is 12-15 km, 20-30 minutes and about AED 35-50. By public transport take the Dubai Tram to the Palm Jumeirah stop, then the Palm Monorail from the Gateway station at the base of the trunk to Atlantis Aquaventure, about 15 minutes and roughly AED 20-30 return; the monorail has the best free view of the fronds. From Downtown or the airport a taxi is the realistic option.

Can you see Palm Jumeirah from a boat?

Yes, and it is the best way to see it. The 3-hour private charters from Dubai Marina sail into the lagoon between the fronds and the crescent with a swim stop at anchor; the 4-hour routes continue past Atlantis to the Burj Al Arab. The yacht party ($99, 21+) sails the lagoon lit up at night. The 1-hour shared tour stays in the Marina, JBR and Bluewaters and does not reach the Palm.

Is Palm Jumeirah a good place to stay?

For a resort holiday, yes: private beaches, pools, Aquaventure and quiet evenings, with our safari, Abu Dhabi and balloon tours picking up at the hotel. For a city trip, no: there is no metro, every evening in the Marina or Downtown is a 20-35 minute taxi each way, and most restaurants are inside the resorts. Families and honeymooners choose it; first-time sightseers usually do better in Downtown or the Marina.

How much does the Palm Monorail cost?

Roughly AED 20-30 return, about 15 minutes from the Gateway station at the base of the trunk to Atlantis Aquaventure; check the current fare on the official site before you go. It connects with the Dubai Tram at the Palm Jumeirah stop, which in turn meets the Red Line at DMCC and Sobha Realty. It is the cheapest ride on the island and the only one with a view of the fronds.

Is there a free beach on Palm Jumeirah?

Palm West Beach, the public stretch on the sunset side of the trunk, is free to walk and swim from, with paid beach clubs and restaurants along it; the beaches on the fronds and the crescent belong to the villas and the hotels. It faces the Marina skyline across the water and is the island's best sunset on land. Swim only where the beach is flagged.

Does the desert safari pick up from Palm Jumeirah hotels?

Yes. The full-day desert safari collects you at any Palm hotel or apartment in an air-conditioned 4x4 and drives to the Lahbab Red Dunes, about 45-60 minutes from most Dubai hotels and a little longer from the island. It runs 7 hours, from $45 or $65 with the 30-minute quad bike, with no prepayment; the Abu Dhabi tour picks up on the Palm at 8:00 AM and the balloon before dawn.
