Downtown to the Palm is about 25 km: 25-35 minutes and around AED 50-70 by taxi to Atlantis, door to door, and the option we recommend for almost everyone. The public transport route is the Red Line to DMCC, the tram to the Palm Jumeirah stop and the Palm Monorail up the trunk: cheap, scenic and a good deal slower. Below are the numbers for both, a Palm afternoon that ends with the sunset, and the reminder that our tours skip the question entirely: the desert safari collects you at your Downtown or Palm hotel.

How far is Palm Jumeirah from Downtown Dubai?
About 25 km. A taxi to Atlantis takes 25-35 minutes with clear roads and costs around AED 50-70 on the meter; add 15-30 minutes in the 7-9:30 AM and 5-8 PM rush. By metro, tram and Palm Monorail budget about 1.5 hours and roughly AED 30-40 in fares, most of it the monorail return.

Downtown to the Palm: the ways, ranked
#1
Taxi or Careem
Around AED 50-70 on the meter with clear roads, AED 15-20 a head for four, and 25-35 minutes outside the 7-9:30 AM and 5-8 PM rush. It solves the thing public transport cannot: the Palm's hotels are spread over the trunk and the crescent, and the monorail serves only the trunk and Atlantis.
#2
Metro, tram and Palm Monorail
Three legs on two tickets: the Red Line and the tram on a Nol card for AED 5-7.5 plus a few dirhams, then the monorail from Gateway station to Atlantis Aquaventure, about 15 minutes for roughly AED 20-30 return. Budget about 1.5 hours door to door. The last leg on the elevated track is the best part.
#3
Hotel pickup with our tours
None of this applies to the tours: the full-day desert safari collects you at your hotel in a 4x4 for the 45-60 minute drive to the Lahbab dunes, from $45; the Abu Dhabi day picks up at 8:00 AM; the balloon picks up before dawn. The safari and Abu Dhabi are paid on the day; the balloon holds with a 30% deposit.
#4
The Palm from the sea
From Downtown, the Marina pier is the same 25 km as the Palm, and from there a 3-hour private charter reaches the Palm lagoon with a swim stop, 4 hours Atlantis and Burj Al Arab from the sea, from AED 400 per hour for the boat. The yacht party circles the Palm at night for $99.
#5
A Palm afternoon: Aquaventure to the fountain
Leave Downtown after lunch, Aquaventure or The Lost Chambers through the afternoon, The View at The Palm (about AED 70-100) for the light, then the free Palm Fountain at The Pointe and dinner facing Atlantis, and a 25-35 minute taxi back. The plan with timings by month is in the table below.
The short answer: a taxi, unless you are alone and in no hurry
Take a taxi or Careem: 25-35 minutes and around AED 50-70 on the meter from Downtown to Atlantis with clear roads, door to door, for one to four people. The Palm's hotels are scattered over the trunk and the crescent, and only a car reaches all of them.
Take the metro, tram and monorail if you are on your own, on a budget, and the ride is part of the day: Red Line to DMCC, tram to the Palm Jumeirah stop, monorail up the trunk. Budget about 1.5 hours and roughly AED 30-40 in fares, most of it the monorail return, and enjoy the last 15 minutes on the elevated track.
And if the Palm is on your list because you want to see the whole thing, not one hotel, do that from the sea: a 3-hour private charter from the Marina pier or the night yacht party. Details of all three below, with a Palm afternoon plan and the rush hours to avoid.
Downtown to Palm Jumeirah: the options compared
Downtown is inland on Sheikh Zayed Road; the Palm is off the coast about 25 km south-west, past Jumeirah and before the Marina. The road onto the island runs up the trunk, and the monorail runs beside it.
| Option | Time | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taxi (street or Hala) | 25-35 min; more in the 7-9:30 AM and 5-8 PM rush | About AED 50-70 on the meter | Bags, families, a dinner booking, a crescent hotel |
| Careem or Uber | As a taxi | Similar or slightly higher, fixed in the app | Pinning a pickup at a Downtown tower |
| Metro + tram + Palm Monorail | About 1.5 hours door to door | AED 5-7.5 on a Nol card plus a few dirhams for the tram; monorail roughly AED 20-30 return | Solo travellers, budgets, the view from the track |
| Tour pickup (safari, Abu Dhabi, balloon) | Included | From $45 per person for the safari and Abu Dhabi, $275 for the balloon; no transfer to pay | Tour days: you are collected at the hotel door |
| Private yacht from the Marina | 25 km to the pier, then 3-4 hours on the water | From AED 400 per hour for the boat | Seeing the Palm from the sea, a swim stop, sunset |
Taxi fares, Nol fares and the monorail price are third-party and change; treat them as budgets and check the RTA app or the official sites on the day.
Step by step: Red Line, tram and Palm Monorail
This is three legs and two tickets. It works, it is cheap, and the last leg is a small sight in itself; it is not quick.
- 1. Dubai Mall to the metro. The Metro Link bridge from the mall to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station takes 10-15 minutes on travelators. From a Business Bay hotel, use Business Bay station instead.
- 2. Nol card. A Silver card is about AED 25 with AED 19 of credit and covers the metro and the tram; a red paper ticket is about AED 2 plus the fare. Downtown to the Marina is 2-3 zones, AED 5-7.5 on a Silver card.
- 3. Red Line towards Jabal Ali and Expo City, away from the airport. Get off at DMCC, the first of the two Marina/JLT stations; Sobha Realty, the next one, also connects to the tram.
- 4. Change to the Dubai Tram. Follow the signs from the metro to the tram platform; the same Nol card taps in. Ride in the Al Sufouh direction and get off at the Palm Jumeirah stop.
- 5. Walk to Gateway station, the monorail terminus at the base of the trunk beside the tram stop, and buy a ticket: roughly AED 20-30 return, and check the current fare.
- 6. Monorail to Atlantis Aquaventure, about 15 minutes up the trunk, with the fronds, the villas and the sea below. The View at The Palm and Nakheel Mall are on the trunk on the way; Atlantis is at the top.
Trains run from about 5 AM to midnight or 1 AM depending on the day, later on Sunday mornings; check the last train on the RTA app and the monorail hours on its site. Our Dubai Metro guide covers the lines and the Gold Class question, and Marina to Palm Jumeirah has the last two legs in detail.
When the taxi is the only sensible answer
Most Palm trips have a purpose: an Aquaventure day with towels and bags, a dinner at The Pointe, a hotel check-in on the crescent, a family with a pushchair. For all of them the taxi is right, and for a group of three or four it is barely more expensive per head than the train.
- The meter: flag fall about AED 5, about AED 2 per km, minimum fare about AED 12; the 25 km run comes to around AED 50-70 with clear roads. Cards are accepted; round up as a tip.
- The apps: Careem and Uber run at similar or slightly higher prices and fix the fare before you ride; Hala books a metered street taxi through the app. Pin your exact tower as the pickup rather than the Dubai Mall, which has more entrances than a driver can guess.
- The rush: 7-9:30 AM and 5-8 PM on Sheikh Zayed Road add 15-30 minutes, and Friday and Saturday evenings are slow around Downtown. A departure around 2 PM is the sweet spot for a Palm afternoon.
- Coming back: after the Palm Fountain, taxis and the apps work from The Pointe and Atlantis; budget the same AED 50-70 and 25-35 minutes, more on weekend evenings.
The full fare table for the city is in our taxi and Careem guide. If you are heading to the Marina rather than the Palm, Downtown to Dubai Marina has the metro and the yacht timings.
A Palm afternoon from Downtown, with timings
The Palm rewards an afternoon that ends at sunset rather than a morning. This is the plan we give guests staying in Downtown; shift The View to the sunset hour of your month.
| Time | What | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1:45 PM | Taxi from Downtown | 25-35 min, about AED 50-70; after the lunch lull, before the 5 PM rush |
| 2:15-5:00 PM | Aquaventure or The Lost Chambers at Atlantis | The waterpark for families; the aquarium for a cooler, shorter visit |
| 5:00-6:00 PM | The View at The Palm, 52nd floor | About AED 70-100; the only photo of the whole palm shape; sunset about 5:30 PM in December, 7:10 PM in June |
| From 6:00 PM | Palm West Beach or The Pointe | West Beach for the sunset strip; The Pointe for the free Palm Fountain shows facing Atlantis |
| 8:30-9:00 PM | Taxi back to Downtown | 25-35 min; the Friday and Saturday crowd makes it longer |
Ticket prices and show times are third-party and change; check the official sites before you go.
In summer, from May to September, swap the order: the aquarium and Nakheel Mall in the heat of the afternoon, the beach after 5 PM, when the sea is still warm and the sun is not. Everything on the island is in our Palm Jumeirah area guide; if you are choosing between the two as a base, Downtown vs Palm Jumeirah is the comparison.
With our tours, the transfer is not your problem
Every Downtown and Palm hotel is inside our pickup zone, and the tours that need a drive include it. The full-day desert safari collects you at the door in an air-conditioned 4x4 with a licensed English-speaking driver, drives 45-60 minutes to the Lahbab Red Dunes, and brings you back after the camp dinner and shows; from $45 per person, $65 with the 30-minute quad bike, and no prepayment: you agree the date on WhatsApp and pay on the day.
The Abu Dhabi city tour picks up at 8:00 AM for the 1.5-2 hour drive to the Grand Mosque, from $45 shared or $245 for a private car for up to 7, also with no prepayment. The sunrise balloon picks up before dawn anywhere in Dubai city, $275 with a 30% deposit, and the baskets sell out one to two weeks ahead. The yachts are the exception: they leave from the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower in Dubai Marina, the same 25 km from Downtown as the Palm, so the taxi and metro advice above applies to them too.
If you are laying out a whole trip with the Palm, the desert and the Marina in it, the free SB AI planner puts the days on the map with our tours in the right slots.
The Palm from the sea, if you want the whole island
A taxi shows you one hotel; the water shows you the island. From the Marina pier, a 3-hour private charter runs the Marina, JBR and Bluewaters, then into the Palm lagoon for a swim stop at anchor in daylight, and 4 hours continue to Atlantis and Burj Al Arab from the open sea. Boats start from AED 400 per hour for the 31 ft Sealine with a 3-hour minimum, captain, fuel, water, ice and soft drinks included; the 53 ft Daphne takes 17 guests from AED 1,000 per hour. Sunset is the slot everybody wants, so book it first; we confirm the boat with the marina before any payment.
Without a group, the yacht party sails at 9:00 PM around the Palm crescent to the Burj Al Arab photo stop and back by 1:00 AM, $99 with a live DJ and a BBQ, 21+ with an original ID; it is paid in advance because the nights sell out. From Downtown, leave by 7:00 PM on the metro or 7:30 PM in a taxi outside the weekend rush for the 8:30 PM boarding, and plan a taxi home, because the last train may have gone by the time the yacht is back.

The metro and tram go on a Nol card; a monorail return is roughly AED 20-30.
How much is a taxi from the Dubai Mall to Atlantis?
Budget about AED 50-70 on the meter without traffic: flag fall about AED 5, about AED 2 per km, minimum about AED 12. Careem and Uber are similar or slightly higher and show the price before you book. Taxis take cards; round up for the driver. Check the app on the day, because fares change.
How long does the Palm Monorail take to Atlantis?
About 15 minutes from Gateway station at the base of the trunk to Atlantis Aquaventure at the top, on an elevated track with the fronds and the sea on both sides. A return ticket is roughly AED 20-30; check the fare and hours on the day. The View at The Palm and Nakheel Mall are on the trunk on the way up.
Do your tours pick up from Downtown and Palm Jumeirah hotels?
Yes. The full-day desert safari, the Abu Dhabi city tour and the sunrise balloon all include hotel pickup and drop-off in Dubai, and the safari and the Abu Dhabi day also collect in Sharjah and Ajman. The safari and the Abu Dhabi tour need no prepayment: you confirm the date on WhatsApp and pay on the day. Only the yacht cruises ask you to come to the Marina pier.
What is the best time of day to visit Palm Jumeirah from Downtown?
Early afternoon, leaving Downtown around 1:45-2 PM: you miss the rush-hour traffic, get Aquaventure or the aquarium in the afternoon, The View at sunset (about 5:30 PM in December, 7:10 PM in June) and the free Palm Fountain at The Pointe after dark, then a 25-35 minute taxi back. In summer keep the beach for after 5 PM.
Can I see the Palm from the water instead?
Yes. From the Marina pier, a 3-hour private charter adds the Palm lagoon and a swim stop to the Marina route, and 4 hours reach Atlantis and Burj Al Arab from the sea, from AED 400 per hour for the boat with crew and fuel included. The yacht party circles the Palm crescent at night for $99 per person, 21+ with an original ID.
