Full-Day Desert Safari in Dubai — From $45 per person

Jebel Jais, the UAE's highest peak at 1,934 m, is about 150-170 km from Dubai in Ras Al Khaimah: about 2 hours by car from the Marina and a little less from Deira, with the summit road climbing to around 1,900 m. The sensible ways up are a hire car or a taxi that waits, because nothing public climbs the mountain. The draw is the Jais Flight zipline, about 2.8 km and one of the longest in the world, plus the Jais Sledder and the viewpoints. Here are the routes, the costs, the timings that make the day work, and the desert safari that collects you at the hotel instead.

How far is Jebel Jais from Dubai and how long does it take?

About 150-170 km. By car it is about 2 hours from Dubai Marina and a bit less from Deira, following the E311 north to Ras Al Khaimah and then the mountain road up to about 1,900 m. Allow 4 hours of driving for the day and 3-4 hours at the top. A taxi is roughly AED 350-450 one way by the meter maths, before waiting time.

How to do Jebel Jais, ranked

Hire car #1
Dubai to the summit road, about 2 hours each way Anyone with a licence; sunrise or sunset at the top

Hire car

The right answer for nearly everyone. The E311 runs north past Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain to Ras Al Khaimah, then the mountain road climbs in hairpins to the viewpoint car parks, the zipline base and the summit restaurant. Your own car means you can leave at 6 AM for the empty road and the cool morning, or stay for the sunset and drive back in the dark without worrying about a lift.

Taxi or Careem with the driver waiting #2
Door to door, roughly AED 350-450 one way by the meter maths Groups of 3-4 without a licence

Taxi or Careem with the driver waiting

At about AED 2 per km the meter alone puts Dubai to the summit at roughly AED 350-450 one way, before waiting time; check the estimate in Careem and agree the round trip and a waiting fee before you leave, because a taxi at 1,900 m is not something you hail. Split four ways it is a workable day; for two people the hire car is cheaper and simpler.

Bus to Ras Al Khaimah, then a taxi #3
Dubai to RAK city by intercity bus, then about an hour up Solo travellers with a full day and a small budget

Bus to Ras Al Khaimah, then a taxi

The RTA runs intercity buses from Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah city (check the route and times in the S'hail app), but nothing public climbs the mountain, so the last stretch is a RAK taxi of roughly an hour each way, arranged to wait for you. It is the cheapest way up and the slowest: a long day, and the least flexible when the zipline slot is at a fixed time.

The dune alternative #4
Hotel pickup, 45-60 minutes to the Lahbab Red Dunes, 7 hours Thrills without a 4-hour round trip

The dune alternative

If the zipline is the reason and the drive is the obstacle, the full-day desert safari is the thrill you can book on WhatsApp with no prepayment: 30-45 minutes of dune bashing on the Big Red dunes, sandboarding, the optional 30-minute quad bike ride for $65 all in, then sunset, the BBQ dinner and the shows at Al Khayma camp. A 4x4 collects you at the hotel in Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman and brings you back.

Dubai to Jebel Jais: the short answer

It is about 150-170 km and about 2 hours by car from Dubai Marina, a bit less from Deira, and the practical choice is a hire car. A taxi works for a group if you agree the round trip and a waiting fee in advance; public transport gets you to Ras Al Khaimah city and no further, so the mountain leg is a taxi either way. There is no train, no tram and no scheduled bus up the hairpins.

Jebel Jais is the UAE's highest peak at 1,934 m, and the road climbs to about 1,900 m past a series of viewpoint car parks. Most people go for two things: the Jais Flight zipline, about 2.8 km long and one of the longest in the world, and the view of the layered ridges of the Hajar Mountains. Both are timed by the sun and the weather, which is why the timings below matter more than the route.

We do not run a scheduled Jebel Jais tour. If a 4-hour round trip is more driving than your holiday wants, the full-day desert safari is the thrill with the transport built in, 45-60 minutes from your hotel; the comparison is at the end.

The options compared

Third-party fares are approximate and depend on the meter, the traffic and the app. Zipline and Sledder prices and slots live on the official Jebel Jais site, and change by season, so check them there before you drive out.

Driving to Jebel Jais step by step

Two hours is the honest figure from the Marina with an early start; add the time you spend at the viewpoints on the way up, because you will stop.

  • 1. Leave early. For a morning zipline slot, be on the road by 6:30 AM. The E311 (Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road) is the fastest way north, and you are driving away from the morning commute into Dubai. From Deira it is a little quicker than from the Marina.
  • 2. North past Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain. The E311 runs inland of the coastal cities to Ras Al Khaimah; keep to it rather than the coast road, which crawls through the towns.
  • 3. Fuel and water before the mountain. Fill up in Ras Al Khaimah city; the mountain road has viewpoints, not petrol stations. Bring warm layers: the summit is markedly cooler than the coast, and in winter it can be properly cold in the wind.
  • 4. The hairpins. The road climbs from the valley floor to about 1,900 m through a series of switchbacks with car parks at the viewpoints; stop at one on the way up for the layered ridges and save the summit for the zipline and the restaurant.
  • 5. At the top. The zipline base, the Jais Sledder and the summit-road viewing area with the 1484 by Puro restaurant are all around the top of the road. Arrive with a margin before a booked slot; the check-in time is in your booking.
  • 6. Coming back. Sunset is about 5:30 PM in December and about 7:10 PM in June. If you stay for it, allow the full 2 hours back in the dark. The 5-8 PM commute out of Dubai does not affect you — you are driving in.

When a taxi works, and how to set it up

A taxi is a legitimate way to Jebel Jais for three or four people who do not want to drive, but only if you arrange it properly. At about AED 2 per km the meter alone puts Dubai to the summit at roughly AED 350-450 one way, before the driver's waiting time; check the estimate in Careem before you leave and agree a round trip with a waiting fee rather than assuming you will find a ride down. Hala inside the Careem app books an ordinary metered RTA taxi if you prefer the meter to app pricing.

Two cautions. App bookings for a 160 km job can take a while to be accepted, so schedule the ride the night before if the app allows it, or go to a hotel taxi rank in the morning and talk to the driver. And a driver who has not been up the mountain may want reassurance about the road: it is a modern road with car parks at the viewpoints, not a track. The taxi and Careem guide covers surcharges, tipping and the rules of thumb for long rides.

Jais Flight, the Sledder and the viewpoints

The Jais Flight is the headline: a zipline of about 2.8 km, one of the longest in the world, launched from near the summit. It runs to booked slots, the slots go early on winter weekends and it depends on the wind, so book ahead on the official site, arrive with the margin your booking states, and have a plan B for a windy day — a slot moved to another date means another 4 hours of driving.

The Jais Sledder is the second ride, a sled on rails down the mountainside that suits families who are not doing the zipline, and the viewpoint car parks along the hairpins are free. Weight, age and health limits apply to both rides; check them when you book rather than at the top.

Prices for the rides change by season and we would rather you saw the current number than an old one: check the official Jebel Jais site or app before you go. The one number that does not change is the peak, 1,934 m, and the temperature drop that comes with it — bring a jacket even when Dubai is 30°C.

Practical notes for the mountain

Small things that make or break a 300 km day.

  • Weekend timing. The UAE weekend is Saturday and Sunday, when the viewpoints and the zipline queue are busiest; a weekday morning is the quiet version.
  • Wind and weather. The zipline closes in high wind. If the day is built around it, keep a second date free and check the forecast the night before.
  • Fuel. Fill up in Ras Al Khaimah city; there are viewpoints on the mountain road, not petrol stations.
  • Cards and ID. Cards work almost everywhere in the UAE; carry a passport or Emirates ID copy on your phone, as you would anywhere in the country.
  • Ramadan. The dates move about 11 days earlier every year; check the ride hours for the month before you go.

Jebel Jais or the desert: which day to spend your driving on

Jebel Jais is a driving day: 4 hours in the car for 3-4 hours at the top, worth it for the zipline and the mountain air, and best done with your own car. The desert is the opposite. The full-day desert safari collects you at the hotel in Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman in an air-conditioned 4x4, drives 45-60 minutes to the Lahbab Red Dunes, and gives you 30-45 minutes of dune bashing, sandboarding, a camel ride, sunset, then the BBQ dinner and the fire, Tanoura and belly dance shows at Al Khayma camp — 7 hours, from $45, or $65 with the 30-minute quad bike ride, no prepayment.

If height is what you are after, the sunrise balloon flies at 2,000-4,000 feet over the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve with the Hajar Mountains on the horizon: 40-70 minutes in the air and 4-5 hours door to door with a pre-dawn pickup, $275 with a 30% deposit, and it sells out one to two weeks ahead. On a week with a spare day, the Abu Dhabi city tour is the other big day out we run: 9 hours from $45 with an 8:00 AM pickup and no prepayment.

The rest of the long-distance set is in the best day trips from Dubai guide; the closest comparisons are Hatta, the other mountain day at about 130 km, and Sharjah, which you pass on the way north. On the 7-day itinerary Jebel Jais takes the spare day only if you have a car; otherwise the day goes to the water, where a private yacht from AED 400 per hour needs no driving at all. And for the view without the drive, the best views in Dubai guide ranks the observation decks and the sea.

FAQ

How far is Jebel Jais from Dubai and how long does it take?

About 150-170 km. By car it is about 2 hours from Dubai Marina and a bit less from Deira, following the E311 north to Ras Al Khaimah and then the mountain road up to about 1,900 m. Allow 4 hours of driving for the day and 3-4 hours at the top. A taxi is roughly AED 350-450 one way by the meter maths, before waiting time.

Can I get to Jebel Jais by public transport?

Only part of the way. RTA intercity buses run from Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah city (check the route and times in the S'hail app), but no bus climbs the mountain: from RAK city it is a taxi of roughly an hour each way, which you should ask to wait. For most visitors a hire car, or a taxi from Dubai with the driver waiting, is simpler and not much dearer once the RAK taxi is counted.

How much does a taxi from Dubai to Jebel Jais cost?

Roughly AED 350-450 one way on the meter at about AED 2 per km, plus the driver's waiting time at the top and the same again to come back; check the live estimate in Careem before you go. Agree a round trip and a waiting fee in advance, because taxis do not wait at the summit for passers-by. For two people a hire car is cheaper.

How long is the Jais Flight zipline and do I need to book?

About 2.8 km, one of the longest ziplines in the world, launched from near the summit of the UAE's highest peak. It runs to booked time slots and is weather-dependent, so book on the official site before you drive out, arrive with the margin stated in your booking, and check the current price, weight and age limits there rather than relying on old numbers.

Is it cold on Jebel Jais?

Markedly cooler than the coast at about 1,900 m, and windy at the viewpoints. In winter, when Dubai is a pleasant 20-30°C by day, the summit can feel properly cold in the wind, especially at sunrise and sunset; bring a jacket and closed shoes. In summer the altitude takes the edge off the heat but does not remove it, so go early.

When is the best time to visit Jebel Jais?

November to March for the clear air and the cool, and early morning or late afternoon on any day: the ridges look best in low light, the zipline slots go early on winter weekends, and Saturday and Sunday are the busiest days at the top. Sunset is about 5:30 PM in December and about 7:10 PM in June; allow the full 2 hours back in the dark afterwards.

Jebel Jais or Hatta: which mountain day from Dubai?

Jebel Jais for the zipline, the height and the views: about 150-170 km, about 2 hours each way. Hatta for water and an easier day: about 130 km on the E44, 1.5-2 hours, with the dam, kayaks and the Heritage Village, and bus E16 as a cheap way there. Neither competes with the desert safari, which is 45-60 minutes from the hotel with the transport included.
