Dubai in January is the coolest and most comfortable month of the year: daytime highs of about 23-26°C, nights of 14-17°C, little rain and a sea of 21-23°C that feels fresh rather than warm. It is also one of the busiest, with New Year visitors in the first week and the Dubai Shopping Festival running to 17 January this season. This guide covers the weather, events, crowds and prices, what to pack and what to book first, starting with the sunrise balloon from $275.

Five ways to spend January in Dubai
#1
A sunrise balloon over the desert
January gives the coldest, clearest dawns of the year, with the Hajar Mountains on the horizon and the dunes turning gold. Dress in layers, because the take-off site is colder than the city. Baskets sell out one to two weeks ahead in this peak month, and a flight cancelled for wind or poor visibility is refunded in full or moved to a new date.
#2
The desert safari in cool air
The dunes are at their most comfortable in January: dune bashing and sandboarding in mild air, sunset at about 5:40-6:00 PM and a camp dinner that needs a light jacket once the sun is down. It is the one big day out with no prepayment, so it can be placed around the balloon and the bookings that do need a deposit.
#3
A day in Abu Dhabi
Walking the marble courtyards of the Grand Mosque is comfortable in January, which is not true for half the year. The 9-hour tour leaves at 8:00 AM, and the mosque dress code applies: loose clothing covering ankles and wrists plus a headscarf for women, shoulders and knees covered for men. Abu Dhabi runs a little hotter than Dubai, so it is mild rather than cool.
#4
Sunset on the Marina water
Sunset comes early in January, so the golden hour is in the afternoon and the shared yacht hour fits easily before dinner. Wear a layer: the deck is breezy and it cools quickly after the sun goes. The sea is too cold to swim for many guests, so this is the month for looking at the water rather than getting into it.
#5
Global Village and the Shopping Festival
Global Village opened its 31st season on 14 October 2026 and runs until May, with international pavilions, food, shows and rides, from AED 25 on weekdays and AED 30 on weekends according to Khaleej Times. The Dubai Shopping Festival runs to 17 January this season, so early January is the time to combine sales with a pavilion evening.
Dubai in January: the short answer
January is the best month for doing things outside and one of the worst for swimming in the sea. Days run at about 23-26°C and nights at 14-17°C, a few degrees lower in the desert. The air is dry and clear and the sun sets early, at about 5:40-6:00 PM. It is the coolest month of the year, so the desert, the balloon, Abu Dhabi and long walks are all at their best.
The price is crowds and money. The first week still carries the New Year visitors, hotels are at their dearest in the first days and ease in the second half, and the popular slots, the balloon above all, sell out one to two weeks ahead. If your dates are flexible, the second half of January gives the same weather with less queuing. The month-by-month guide puts it beside the other eleven months.
January weather and sea temperature
These are typical ranges, not forecasts. Check the forecast a few days before you go, and dress for a day that starts at 15°C and finishes at 25°C.
| What | January (typical) | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Daytime high | About 23-26°C; a warm day can reach the high 20s | Shorts at noon; the sun is still strong enough to burn |
| Night low | About 14-17°C, colder on the sand | A jacket for evenings, the camp and the deck of a boat |
| Sea | About 21-23°C | Fresh; fine for a short swim in the sun, not warm |
| Sunrise and sunset | About 7:05-7:10 AM and 5:40-6:00 PM | Short days: start sightseeing early |
| Rain | A few wet days at most; showers usually pass within the hour | Rare but real: a heavy downpour can flood roads for a few hours |
| Mornings | Some are foggy or hazy | Can delay or ground a balloon flight; visibility decides |
Approximate typical ranges. Dubai's small yearly rainfall falls mostly in the winter months.
Layers solve all of it. The same day can need a T-shirt at 1 PM and a jacket at 7 PM. The sea is colder than most visitors expect from Dubai, yet far warmer than the sea at home for anyone coming from northern Europe, so some people swim every day. Hotel pools are the better choice for a long swim, and some hotels heat theirs, so ask.
Crowds, hotel prices and what is on in January
The first days of January are Dubai's busiest after the last week of December. Hotels sit at their highest rates, queues build at the Burj Khalifa and the Fountain, and taxis are slower after dark around Downtown. Things ease from the second week.
| What | Dates this season (as of 29 October 2026) | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|

| Global Village, Season 31 | Opened 14 October 2026; runs until May 2027, with no exact closing date published | AED 25 on weekdays and AED 30 on weekends, Khaleej Times reported; hours reports differ, so check the official site |

| Dubai Fountain shows | Evening shows every 30 minutes from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM in Emaar's last published schedule | In January the sun has set by 6 PM, so every evening show is after dark; check Emaar's channels for changes |
Seasonal dates can change; confirm before you go.
Our guides to Global Village and the Dubai Shopping Festival have the detail. One more date shapes January this season: Ramadan is expected to begin around 8 February 2027, according to astronomers including the Emirates Astronomical Society, subject to the official moon sighting. That makes January the last ordinary month before it. Ramadan moves about ten days earlier each year, so check the dates if your trip falls near them; the Ramadan guide covers what changes.

| Shared 1-hour yacht tour | Sunset light arrives early; bring a layer for the deck | From $32; full prepayment |

Prices are per person except the private Abu Dhabi car. Dates for the balloon and the yacht are confirmed with us on WhatsApp.
The booking order is simple. Place the sunrise balloon first, because it has a deposit and a short supply, and give it a spare morning in case the weather says no; balloon season and weather explains how cancellations work. Then the sunset yacht slot, then the desert safari and the Abu Dhabi city tour, which are agreed on WhatsApp with no prepayment.
The sea and the beach in January
The beach is for sitting, walking and photographs this month. At 21-23°C the water is cool, and the wind on an afternoon beach can feel colder than the number. Public beaches such as JBR and Kite Beach are busy at weekends. The best beaches guide lists the options.
If you plan to be in the water on a tour, ask us about the sea on your date. Water sports start from Umm Suqeim harbour, and you will fall in, so the cool water is part of the day. If you want warm sea swimming, April and the months after are better; our April guide shows how the water warms.
A four-day January plan that works with the weather
The cold dawns and early sunsets of January suit a simple order. Put the balloon early in the trip, not on the last morning, so that a grounded flight can move to another day.
- Day 1: arrive, walk Marina Walk in the late afternoon and take a shared yacht hour timed for sunset, about 5:40-6:00 PM.
- Day 2: the sunrise balloon, a pre-dawn pickup and 4-5 hours door to door, then a slow afternoon by the hotel pool or on the beach.
- Day 3: the Abu Dhabi city tour, 9 hours from an 8:00 AM pickup, in comfortable temperatures for the mosque courtyards.
- Day 4: the full-day desert safari, with an afternoon pickup, sunset on the dunes, the camp dinner and a jacket for the evening.
If you have longer, add Downtown and the Fountain after dark, and an Old Dubai walk in the morning; January is the month to be on foot.
What to pack for January
Pack for a mild day and a cold evening, not a hot holiday.
- Layers: a T-shirt, a light jumper or fleece and a light jacket. Evenings, the camp and the balloon dawn are the cold parts.
- Closed shoes for the balloon site and the dunes, and comfortable shoes for walking.
- Sun protection: sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat for midday, even in January.
- Swimwear and a towel for hotel pools; the sea is cool.
- Modest clothes for Abu Dhabi: the Grand Mosque code is mandatory, with loose clothing covering ankles and wrists plus a headscarf for women, and shoulders and knees covered for men. Our dress code guide covers the rest of the city.
- A passport or ID copy for tours that need it; the balloon needs one for the flight manifest.
- A compact umbrella or light rain jacket in case of a shower.
Who January suits, and who should skip it
January suits first-timers, families who want to be outdoors, couples and photographers. Nothing you came for is held back by the weather, and the evenings are good enough to eat outside.
Skip January, or choose its second half, if the budget is tight, because hotel rates are among the highest of the year in the first days. Look at another month if you want a warm sea to swim in, or if crowds at the top attractions put you off. February has the same weather with Ramadan expected in most of it; December is the busier neighbour.
FAQ
What is the weather in Dubai in January?
Daytime highs of about 23-26°C and night lows of about 14-17°C, with the coolest air of the year, dry and clear skies and the sea at about 21-23°C. Sunrise is around 7:05 AM and sunset around 5:40-6:00 PM. Pack layers, because evenings and the desert are cold.
Is January a good time to visit Dubai?
Yes. It is the coolest month, so the desert, the balloon, Abu Dhabi and walking all work at their best. The drawbacks are crowds in the first week, high hotel rates and a sea that is cool rather than warm.
Can you swim in the sea in Dubai in January?
Yes, but it is cool at about 21-23°C. Many visitors swim for a short while on a sunny afternoon and prefer the hotel pool for longer. For warm sea swimming, April to June is better.
Is it cold at night in Dubai in January?
It is cool, not freezing: about 14-17°C in the city and colder on the sand. A jacket is needed for the desert camp, a yacht deck after sunset and the pre-dawn balloon pickup.
Is January busy and expensive in Dubai?
The first week is, because New Year visitors are still in the city and hotel rates are at their highest. The second half of January is calmer and usually cheaper. Book the balloon one to two weeks ahead in any case.
Does it rain in Dubai in January?
Occasionally. Winter is the wetter part of Dubai's dry year, with a few rainy days at most in January and showers that usually pass within the hour. A heavy downpour can flood roads for a few hours, so keep the schedule flexible.
What should I book first for January?
The sunrise balloon, from $275 with a 30% deposit, because baskets sell out one to two weeks ahead. Then the sunset yacht slot. The desert safari and the Abu Dhabi city tour, both from $45, are agreed on WhatsApp with no prepayment.
