The six best beaches in Dubai, ranked

JBR Beach #1
Jumeirah Beach Residence, next to Dubai Marina The easiest beach: tram, cafés, Ain Dubai in the photo

JBR Beach

Free sand in front of the JBR towers with showers, lifeguards and sunbed hire, The Walk's cafés and restaurants right behind it, tram stops a few minutes away and the footbridge to Bluewaters at the far end for Ain Dubai at sunset. Dubai Marina and our yacht pier are a 10-20 minute walk.

Kite Beach #2
Umm Suqeim, Jumeirah Space, sport and the Burj Al Arab on the horizon

Kite Beach

The long open stretch of Jumeirah where the kitesurfers fly in the afternoon wind, with a running track behind the sand, food trucks and cafés, showers and the Burj Al Arab on the horizon. Free, and big enough to find an empty patch on any day; no metro, so it is a 15-25 minute taxi from Downtown.

Sunset Beach #3
Umm Suqeim, beside the Burj Al Arab The Burj Al Arab up close, sunset, surfers

Sunset Beach

The public beach right beside the Burj Al Arab: the hotel fills the frame from the sand, surfers ride the small break in front of it and at sunset the sail shape goes black against the sky. Free, with showers, and Souk Madinat Jumeirah next door for the second photo angle and dinner.

Palm West Beach #4
Palm Jumeirah, the west side of the trunk Beach clubs and the Marina skyline across the water

Palm West Beach

The beach that looks back at the city: the whole Dubai Marina and JBR skyline stands across the water, and it lights up as the sun goes. The promenade is free to walk and lined with restaurants; the sunbeds belong to the beach clubs, so it is the beach for a long lunch and a sunset rather than a cheap swim.

Al Mamzar Beach Park #5
Deira side, towards Sharjah Families, calm lagoons, shade and space

Al Mamzar Beach Park

The one Dubai beach that is a park: several beaches on calm lagoons, lawns and palms for shade, swimming pools and barbecue areas, with a small entry fee per person or per car. The calmest water in the city for small children, and the nearest sand to the Deira and Creek hotels, about 15-20 minutes by taxi.

A swim stop from a yacht #6
Off the Palm or JBR, at anchor Groups who want the sea without the sand

A swim stop from a yacht

The beach day groups remember: a private boat from the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower anchors off the Palm lagoon or JBR, and you swim from the ladder in daylight with the skyline behind you. From AED 400 per hour for the whole boat, captain, crew, fuel, water, ice and soft drinks included; the swim needs the 3-hour route.

The short answer: which Dubai beach for what

For most visitors the best beach in Dubai is JBR Beach: free, lifeguarded, with showers and sunbed hire, the cafés of The Walk behind it, tram stops a few minutes away and the footbridge to Bluewaters at the end for the Ain Dubai photo. Kite Beach is the best for space and sport, Sunset Beach for the Burj Al Arab up close, Palm West Beach for beach clubs with the Marina skyline across the water, and Al Mamzar Beach Park, on the Deira side, for families who want calm lagoons and shade.

The sea is 20-24°C from November to March, 26-30°C in April and October and up to 33°C from May to September, when it is bath-warm and the beach only works early and late. All the public beaches face the open Gulf rather than a sheltered bay, so swim at the flagged areas. Below: each beach in detail, the sea by month, how to reach each one without a car, and the version of a Dubai beach day that happens on a boat.

JBR Beach: the easiest beach in Dubai

JBR Beach runs the length of the Jumeirah Beach Residence towers, with The Beach and The Walk, the outdoor strip of cafés, restaurants and shops, right behind the sand. It is free, lifeguarded, has showers and sunbed hire, and the tram stops along JBR put you at the beach from anywhere in the Marina or from the Red Line at DMCC and Sobha Realty. From most Marina hotels it is a 10-20 minute walk.

The view is the point. Ain Dubai, the giant observation wheel on Bluewaters Island, stands at the end of the beach, and the footbridge from JBR to Bluewaters is the free photo spot for it at sunset, with the Dubai Harbour superyacht marina beyond the island. In the evening the sand empties and The Walk fills, which makes JBR the beach for people who want the swim, the dinner and the stroll in one place without a taxi.

It is also the beach closest to our yacht pier. The marina pier behind Al Majara Tower is a 10-20 minute walk from the sand, so a JBR morning pairs naturally with the 1-hour shared yacht tour from $32 per person in the afternoon: the same beach seen from the water, then Bluewaters and a photo stop in front of Ain Dubai. Check in 20 minutes before departure at Level P of Al Majara Tower; it is paid in advance because the hourly slots sell out. The JBR guide covers the hotels and the tram stops.

Kite Beach and Sunset Beach: Jumeirah's open coast with the Burj Al Arab

Kite Beach in Umm Suqeim is the long, open stretch of Jumeirah where the kitesurfers fly in the afternoon wind and the Burj Al Arab sits on the horizon. It is free, with showers, cafés and food trucks behind the sand and a running track along the back, and it is the beach for space: you can walk a long way and still find an empty patch. There is no metro nearby; from Downtown it is a taxi of about 15-25 minutes on the meter, with a flag fall of about AED 5 and about AED 2 per km.

Sunset Beach, a little further along, is the public beach right beside the Burj Al Arab, and the reason to come is the hotel: it fills the frame from the sand, surfers ride the small break in front of it, and at sunset the sail shape goes black against the sky. Souk Madinat Jumeirah, with its canals and wind towers, is next door for the second photo angle and for dinner.

Both beaches face the open Gulf, which means real waves on some days and rip currents on others. Swim between the flags, take a red flag seriously, and keep small children in the shallows. The Jumeirah area guide has the photo spots around the hotel and the Jumeirah Mosque visit that fits the same morning.

Palm West Beach: the Marina skyline across the water

Palm West Beach runs along the west side of the Palm Jumeirah trunk and faces the Marina across the water, so the backdrop to your swim is the whole skyline of Dubai Marina and JBR, with Ain Dubai at the end of it. The promenade is free to walk and lined with restaurants; the sand and the sunbeds mostly belong to beach clubs, where a day bed comes with a minimum spend that varies by club and by day, so check before you go.

It is the beach for a long lunch and a sunset rather than a cheap swim, and it is at its best from late afternoon, when the sun drops over the sea and the Marina towers switch on across the water. From the Marina it is a taxi of about 15-25 minutes. By public transport, the Palm Jumeirah tram stop connects with the Palm Monorail, which runs up the trunk to Atlantis in about 15 minutes for roughly AED 20-30 return; the beach is a walk from the trunk stations.

La Mer / J1 and Al Mamzar: the beaches most visitors miss

La Mer, the beachfront district in Jumeirah 1 between Old Dubai and the Burj Al Arab, has been rebuilt in stages: the south side is now J1 Beach, a row of licensed beach clubs where the sand comes with the club and a minimum spend, while the public beach on the Jumeirah side stays free. Check what is open before you go. For anyone staying in Downtown or Bur Dubai it is the nearest sand, about 15-20 minutes by taxi, and quieter than JBR.

Al Mamzar Beach Park is the one Dubai beach that is a park: on the Deira side towards Sharjah, with several beaches on calm lagoons, lawns, palms and shade, swimming pools, barbecue areas and a small entry fee per person or per car; check the current rate at the gate. It is the beach for families with small children and for anyone staying in Deira, about 15-20 minutes by taxi from the Creek hotels, and the lagoon water is calmer than anywhere on the open coast.

The sea by month: temperatures, swimming and safety

Dubai's beach season is the opposite of Europe's. From November to March the days are 20-30°C and the sea 20-24°C, which is the water at its best for a swim and the beach comfortable all day; January is the coolest month. April and October are 30-38°C with the sea at 26-30°C, still good early and late. From May to September the days reach 38-45°C, the humidity climbs from July and the sea goes up to 33°C, warmer than a pool: the beach then works before 9 AM and after 5 PM, and the rest of the day belongs to the malls and the water.

May-June, September38-45°C30-33°CBefore 9 AM and after 5 PM
July-August40-45°C and humidUp to 33°CEarly swims only; the sea from a boat at sunset

Typical ranges; the sea lags the air by a few weeks in spring and autumn.

Three safety notes that apply to every beach here. Swim at the flagged areas and respect a red flag: rip currents are the one real hazard on Dubai's open beaches. Sunscreen, a hat and water are not optional even in January, when the sun is low but strong. And beaches are the only place for swimwear; shoulders and knees covered is the polite standard the moment you step off the sand into a mall or a souk. Our best time to visit Dubai guide has the full month table with crowds and prices.

The beach without the sand: swim stops from a yacht

The version of a Dubai beach day that groups remember is the one at anchor. A private charter from the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower runs out past JBR and Bluewaters and drops anchor off the Palm Jumeirah lagoon or off JBR, where you swim from the boat's ladder in daylight, within 3 m of the yacht and never while it is moving. The Coast Guard closes swimming around 7 PM in summer and 5 PM in winter, so the swim comes before the sunset, not after it.

A swim stop needs the 3-hour route: 2 hours covers the Marina canal, JBR, Bluewaters and Ain Dubai; 3 hours adds the Palm lagoon and the stop; 4 hours continues to the Burj Al Arab and Atlantis from the sea. Boats start from AED 400 per hour for the whole boat with captain, crew, fuel, water, ice and soft drinks included: the Sealine, 31 ft for up to 6 guests, and the Tres, 40 ft for up to 10, both with a 3-hour minimum, or the Daphne, 53 ft for up to 17 guests from AED 1,000 per hour, with a cabin to change in. Children under 10 wear life jackets in the water and on deck, and babies under 2 stay in the saloon or the cabin with a parent.

Bring your own drinks and dry snacks, a copy of every passport or Emirates ID on your phone, and swimwear under your clothes, because shoes come off at the pier and the sports boats up to 40 ft have no cabin. We check the boat with the marina and confirm the time and the total on WhatsApp before any payment. The full fleet is on the yacht page, and how many hours to rent a yacht explains the routes by length.

A Dubai beach day that needs no car: JBR and the Marina

This is the day we suggest to first-timers staying anywhere on the Red Line. It uses the metro and the tram with a Nol card and puts the beach, the water and the evening within a 20-minute walk of each other.

  • 8:30 AM. Red Line to DMCC, the Marina/JLT stop, and the tram to a JBR stop; coffee on The Walk, then the sand while it is quiet. Sunbeds are for hire, or bring a towel and use the free showers.
  • 12:30 PM. Lunch on The Walk or at The Beach; the shaded terraces are the answer to the midday sun.
  • 2 PM. The footbridge to Bluewaters Island for the Ain Dubai photo and a loop of the Wharf, 30-40 minutes on foot.
  • Late afternoon. The 10-20 minute walk to the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower for the shared yacht hour from $32, timed for golden hour: the canal, JBR from the sea, Bluewaters and the photo stop in front of Ain Dubai. Check in 20 minutes before departure with an original passport or Emirates ID.
  • After dark. Marina Walk under the lit towers, dinner by the water, and for the 21+ crowd the yacht party boards at 8:30 PM from the same pier: 9 PM to 1 AM, a live DJ, a live BBQ and unlimited soft drinks for $99 per person, paid in advance.

FAQ

Which is the best beach in Dubai?

JBR Beach for most visitors: free, lifeguarded, showers and sunbeds, the cafés of The Walk behind it, tram stops a few minutes away and a 10-20 minute walk from the Marina hotels and our yacht pier. Kite Beach is best for space and sport, Sunset Beach for the Burj Al Arab, Palm West Beach for beach clubs with the skyline view, and Al Mamzar for families. The sea is 20-24°C from November to March.

Are the beaches in Dubai free?

The public beaches are: JBR, Kite Beach, Sunset Beach and the Jumeirah beaches cost nothing and have showers and lifeguards. Al Mamzar Beach Park charges a small entry fee per person or per car. Hotel beaches are for guests or a paid day pass, and the beach clubs on Palm West Beach and at J1 sell day beds with a minimum spend.

Can you swim in the sea in Dubai in summer?

Yes, but the sea reaches about 33°C from June to September, warmer than a pool, and the air is 38-45°C, so swim before 9 AM or after 5 PM and stay in the shade in between. From November to March the sea is 20-24°C and the beach is pleasant all day. On a yacht, swimming at anchor closes around 7 PM in summer and 5 PM in winter.

Kite Beach or JBR Beach: which is better?

JBR for convenience: tram, cafés, sunbeds, Ain Dubai in the photo and the Marina next door. Kite Beach for space and sport: a long open beach with kitesurfers, a running track, food trucks and the Burj Al Arab on the horizon, but no metro and a 15-25 minute taxi from Downtown. Families with small children usually prefer JBR; runners and photographers prefer Kite Beach.

How do I get to JBR Beach by metro?

Take the Red Line to DMCC or Sobha Realty, the two Marina/JLT stations, and change to the Dubai Tram, which stops along JBR a few minutes from the sand. From most Dubai Marina hotels it is a 10-20 minute walk instead. A Nol card is needed for both; the fare is about AED 3-7.5 depending on the zones you cross.

Which beach has the best view of the Burj Al Arab?

Sunset Beach in Umm Suqeim, the public beach right beside the hotel, where the sail shape fills the frame and goes black against the sky at sunset. Kite Beach has the same view from further away, and Souk Madinat Jumeirah next door gives the second angle across the canals. From the sea, a 4-hour private charter reaches the Burj Al Arab and Atlantis.

Can you swim from a yacht in Dubai?

Yes, on a private charter: at anchor, in daylight, off the Palm Jumeirah lagoon or JBR, within 3 m of the yacht and never while it is moving. The Coast Guard closes swimming around 7 PM in summer and 5 PM in winter, and children under 10 wear life jackets. A swim stop needs the 3-hour route, from AED 400 per hour for boats such as the 31 ft Sealine for up to 6 guests.
