Most of the best things in Dubai cost nothing. The Dubai Fountain plays every 30 minutes from about 6 PM, the beaches at JBR, Kite Beach and Sunset Beach are free with the Burj Al Arab and Ain Dubai in the frame, the 7 km Marina Walk is the best evening stroll in the city, and Old Dubai costs AED 1-2 for the abra and nothing for the rest. Below are the free things by area, the cheap upgrades actually worth paying for, from the AED 20-30 Palm Monorail to the $32 shared yacht hour, and a free day you can run on the metro.

What are the best free things to do in Dubai?
The Dubai Fountain, with evening shows every 30 minutes from about 6 PM; the public beaches at JBR, Kite Beach and Sunset Beach; the 7 km Marina Walk; Al Fahidi and the souks in Old Dubai; Al Seef after dark; the Palm Fountain at The Pointe; and the footbridge to Bluewaters for the Ain Dubai photo. The only spend on that list is the abra across the Creek at AED 1-2.

The six best free things in Dubai
#1
The Dubai Fountain
Free shows on Burj Lake outside the Dubai Mall, in the evenings every 30 minutes from about 6 PM, with afternoon shows on some days. Arrive 15-20 minutes early for a rail-side spot on the promenade, or watch from the Souk Al Bahar bridge with Burj Khalifa lit above the water.
#2
JBR Beach and The Walk
The easiest free beach in Dubai: sand in front of the JBR towers, showers, lifeguards and the cafés of The Walk behind it, the tram a few minutes away and the footbridge to Bluewaters at the far end for the Ain Dubai photo. Dubai Marina and our yacht pier are a 10-20 minute walk.
#3
Marina Walk
A loop of about 7 km around the Marina canal, free at any hour and best after 5 PM when the heat drops, the towers light up and the yachts return to their berths. Cayan Tower, Pier 7 and the Marina Mall waterfront are on the way; the cafés along the water are the place to stop.
#4
Al Fahidi and the abra
Old Dubai in one afternoon: the wind-tower houses, galleries and cafés of Al Fahidi, the Textile Souk along the Creek and the abra crossing to Deira for AED 1-2, a few minutes on the water for less than a bottle of water, then the Gold and Spice souks on the other bank.
#5
Kite Beach with the Burj Al Arab
Jumeirah's long open beach where the kitesurfers fly and the Burj Al Arab sits on the horizon, free with showers and cafés behind the sand. Come in the late afternoon for the silhouette; swim at the flagged areas, because this is open sea rather than a sheltered bay.
#6
Al Seef after dark
The heritage-style lanes along the Creek on the Bur Dubai side, lantern-lit after dark, with cafés on the water, dhows moored alongside and the lights of Deira across the Creek. Free to walk, and the natural end of an Old Dubai afternoon that started in Al Fahidi.
The short answer: the best free things in Dubai, by area
Dubai's best things are free more often than its reputation suggests. The Dubai Fountain plays every 30 minutes from about 6 PM on Burj Lake and costs nothing; the public beaches at JBR, Kite Beach and Sunset Beach are free and have the Burj Al Arab or Ain Dubai in the frame; the 7 km Marina Walk loop is the best evening stroll in the city; and Old Dubai, meaning Al Fahidi, the souks and the abra across the Creek, costs AED 1-2 for the boat and nothing for the rest.
The trick is pairing the free hours with a handful of cheap paid upgrades that change what you see: a metro ride for AED 3-7.5, the Palm Monorail for about AED 20-30, the Dubai Frame for about AED 50, and the hour on a shared yacht from $32 per person that shows the whole Marina skyline from the water. This guide lists the free things by area, the upgrades by value, and a free day you can run without a car.

|---|---|---|---|
| The Dubai Fountain | Downtown, Burj Lake | Evenings from about 6 PM | Free |

| Kite Beach and Sunset Beach | Jumeirah | Late afternoon and sunset | Free |
| Marina Walk | Dubai Marina | After 5 PM | Free |
| Al Fahidi, the souks, the abra | Bur Dubai and Deira | Late afternoon and evening | Abra AED 1-2, the rest free |
| Al Seef | The Creek | After dark | Free |

| Dubai Water Canal waterfall | Business Bay | After dark | Free |
| Bluewaters footbridge | JBR to Bluewaters Island | Sunset | Free |
Show times and opening hours change; check the official site or app on the day.
Downtown for free: the Fountain, Burj Park and the mall
The Dubai Fountain is the best free thing in Downtown and arguably in Dubai. The shows run on Burj Lake by the Dubai Mall in the evenings, every 30 minutes from about 6 PM, with afternoon shows on some days; check the current schedule before you go. The lake-side promenade in front of the mall fills first, so arrive 15-20 minutes before a show, or watch from the arched Souk Al Bahar footbridge, where the crowd is thinner and Burj Khalifa stands directly behind the water.
Burj Park, the park at the foot of the tower on the edge of Burj Lake, is where the classic Burj Khalifa photo is taken, and it is free: the 828 m tower fills the frame at blue hour. Inside the Dubai Mall the aquarium tunnel is free to walk past, so you see the big tank, the rays and the sharks from the mall floor without buying the aquarium ticket at around AED 150 or more, and the indoor waterfall with its silver diving figures is a free landmark of its own.
Getting there is cheap as well: Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station on the Red Line is a 10-15 minute walk to the mall along the air-conditioned Metro Link bridge with travelators, and the fare is AED 3-7.5 from most of the city with a Nol card. The one thing here worth paying for, going up, is covered in our Burj Khalifa vs Sky Views comparison, and we book Burj Khalifa tickets from $55 per person; the view from the ground costs nothing.
The beaches: the best free thing in Dubai is the coast
Dubai's public beaches are free, clean and lifeguarded, and they sit in front of some of the most expensive hotels in the world. JBR Beach runs along the Jumeirah Beach Residence towers with The Walk and its cafés behind the sand, the tram stops are a few minutes away, and the footbridge to Bluewaters Island at the far end puts Ain Dubai, the giant observation wheel, in every photo. It is the easiest beach in the city to reach without a car.
In Jumeirah, Kite Beach is the long open stretch where the kitesurfers fly and the Burj Al Arab sits on the horizon; Sunset Beach, right beside the hotel, is the spot for the silhouette at sunset. Both are open sea rather than a sheltered bay, so swim at the flagged areas: rip currents are the one real hazard on Dubai's beaches. The sea runs 20-24°C from November to March and climbs to about 33°C in high summer, when it is warm rather than refreshing.
Our guide to the best beaches in Dubai compares the facilities and how to reach each one. Around the Burj Al Arab, the walk through Souk Madinat Jumeirah, with its canals and wind towers, is free and gives the hotel photo from a second angle.
Dubai Marina and JBR: Marina Walk, The Walk and the Bluewaters footbridge
Dubai Marina is a canal city of towers, and the promenade around the water, Marina Walk, a loop of about 7 km, is free at any hour. The best time is after 5 PM, when the heat drops, the yachts come back to their berths and the towers light up. The twisted Cayan Tower, Pier 7 and the Dubai Marina Mall waterfront are all on the loop, and the cafés along it are the place to sit with a coffee and watch the boats go out.
From the Marina it is a 10-20 minute walk, or a tram ride, to JBR, where The Walk and The Beach are the outdoor eating and shopping strip behind the sand. Keep going to the end of JBR and cross the footbridge to Bluewaters Island: Ain Dubai is the landmark to photograph from the bridge and from the beach, and the Wharf on the island is a pleasant loop back.
The one cheap upgrade here is the best-value paid thing in Dubai. The 1-hour shared yacht tour from $32 per person leaves hourly from the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower, cruises the canal, JBR and Bluewaters, and stops in front of Ain Dubai for photos with the crew helping with the shots. Check in 20 minutes before departure at Level P of Al Majara Tower; it is paid in advance because the slots sell out, and there is no hotel pickup, but DMCC metro station is a short walk or tram ride away. The Dubai Marina area guide has the rest of the district.
Old Dubai: Al Fahidi, the souks and the AED 1-2 abra
The Creek is where Dubai started, and its two banks are the most atmospheric free afternoon in the city. Start in Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood on the Bur Dubai side: restored coral-and-gypsum houses with wind towers, small galleries, cafés and the Coffee Museum in lanes that stay shaded. The Textile Souk is a few minutes away along the water, and the scarves and fabrics hanging outside the shops are the photo.
Then take the abra, the wooden water taxi, across the Creek to Deira for AED 1-2 per person, paid on board. The crossing takes a few minutes and is the best boat ride per dirham in the country; sit on the side facing the moored dhows. On the Deira bank the Gold Souk and the Spice Souk are free to wander, and the window displays are the show. Come back after dark for Al Seef, the lantern-lit heritage lanes along the Creek that are at their best in the evening.
Everything here is on the Green Line: Sharaf DG station (formerly Al Fahidi) for the old quarter, Al Ghubaiba for the abra stations, Al Ras for the Gold Souk. Go in the late afternoon, when the light is soft and the heat has gone. The Old Dubai guide has a half-day plan with the station exits and the order to walk it in.
The Palm and the Canal after dark: two free shows most visitors miss
The Pointe, at the tip of the Palm Jumeirah trunk facing Atlantis, has the Palm Fountain with free evening shows and a promenade of restaurants looking across the water at the hotel. It is the free way to get the Atlantis photo. The paid ways are the Palm Monorail from the Gateway station at the base of the trunk, roughly AED 20-30 return and a good cheap view of the trunk with the Burj Al Arab behind it, and The View at The Palm on the 52nd floor for about AED 70-100, the only place that shows the Palm's actual shape.
Back on the mainland, the Dubai Water Canal has a mechanical waterfall pouring from the Sheikh Zayed Road bridge, lit at night, and the canal promenade through Business Bay is a quiet evening walk with the Burj Khalifa above it. Business Bay hotels are usually 10-20% cheaper than Downtown for the same skyline, which matters if free is the theme of the trip. The Palm from the sea is a different thing again: it is a highlight of every private yacht route, and a group of 6-9 can share a boat from AED 400 per hour on our yacht page.
The cheap paid upgrades, ranked by value
Free gets you the ground level. These are the paid things under about AED 200 per person that change what you see, ranked by what you get for the money. Our tour prices are fixed in dollars; the AED prices are third-party and move, so check the official site or app before you go.
| Upgrade | Cost | What you get | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Abra across the Creek | AED 1-2 | A few minutes on the water between the souks | The best value in Dubai |
| Metro Gold Class | About AED 6-15 | Front-carriage windows along Sheikh Zayed Road | The cheapest skyline ride |
| Palm Monorail | About AED 20-30 return | The Palm trunk from above, Atlantis at the end | Good for the photos |
| Shared yacht tour, 1 hour | From $32 per person | Marina canal, JBR, Bluewaters and Ain Dubai from the water | The best paid hour in the city |
| Jumeirah Mosque guided visit | About AED 40 | A morning visit open to non-Muslims, with the context | Worth it if Old Dubai interested you |
| Dubai Frame | About AED 50 | Old Dubai on one side, new Dubai on the other | Cheap and genuinely different |
| Full-day desert safari | From $45 per person | 7 hours: dune bashing, sunset, camp dinner and shows, hotel pickup | The one big thing to spend on |
| Abu Dhabi city tour | From $45 per person | Grand Mosque and BAPS Mandir, both free to enter, with transport and a guide | Two free wonders, one organised day |
| The View at The Palm | About AED 70-100 | The Palm's shape from the 52nd floor | The only way to see the shape |
| Burj Khalifa, At the Top | From $55 per person | Levels 124-125, more at sunset | See the Sky Views comparison first |
AED prices are approximate; our tours are quoted in dollars and confirmed on WhatsApp.
Two of these are our own tours, and both suit a budget trip. The full-day desert safari from $45 per person includes hotel pickup in a 4x4 from Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman, 30-45 minutes of dune bashing, sandboarding, a camel ride, the BBQ dinner with unlimited soft drinks and the fire, Tanoura and belly dance shows, with no prepayment: you agree the date on WhatsApp and pay on the day. The Abu Dhabi city tour from $45 is the cheapest way to see two free wonders, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the BAPS Hindu Mandir, without paying about AED 250-350 each way for a taxi; a licensed guide, the vehicle and bottled water are included, and again there is no prepayment.
A free day in Dubai, hour by hour
This is the day we suggest when guests ask for the cheapest possible full day. It runs on the metro and the tram with a Nol Silver card (about AED 25 including AED 19 of credit), and the only unavoidable spend is the abra. Start early, because the beach is only pleasant before the heat from April to October.
- 8:00 AM, the beach. JBR Beach if you are staying in the Marina, a 10-20 minute walk; Kite Beach if you are in Downtown or Jumeirah, a short taxi. Showers on both, cafés behind the sand, the Burj Al Arab or Ain Dubai in the photos.
- 11 AM, Downtown. Red Line to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, the Metro Link bridge into the mall, the free aquarium tunnel and the indoor waterfall, Burj Park outside for the photo, lunch in the food court.
- 3 PM, Old Dubai. Change to the Green Line at BurJuman for Sharaf DG: the old quarter, the Textile Souk, the abra to Deira for AED 1-2, the Gold and Spice souks as the light softens.
- 6 PM, the first Fountain shows. Back to Downtown for two or three shows from the promenade and the Souk Al Bahar bridge; or stay on the Creek for Al Seef's lanterns if your feet have had enough.
- 8 PM, the Marina. Red Line to DMCC, the Marina/JLT stop, for Marina Walk under the lit towers and the JBR footbridge to Bluewaters with Ain Dubai lit up across the water.
If you have one paid hour in the budget, put it at golden hour on the shared yacht from the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower: the skyline from the water is the one view the free promenades cannot give you, and the sunset departures are the first to sell out. For the whole trip's budget by area, see how much a Dubai trip costs; for where to be when the sun goes, our guide to the best sunset spots in Dubai ranks the free ones alongside the decks that charge.
