The ways from the Marina to the Burj, ranked

Metro Red Line #1
DMCC or Sobha Realty to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Daytime, rush hour, one or two people

Metro Red Line

One train, no changes, AED 5-7.5 on a Silver Nol card for the 2-3 zones. Trains run every 3-7 minutes and the ride is immune to Sheikh Zayed Road traffic, which is what makes it the default between 5 and 8 PM. Budget about an hour door to door, including the 10-15 minute Metro Link walk into the mall.

Taxi or Careem #2
Door to door along Sheikh Zayed Road Groups of 3-4, luggage, late nights, hot afternoons

Taxi or Careem

About 25-40 minutes and around AED 50-70 on the meter without traffic; split three or four ways it costs about the same per head as the metro and drops you at the mall door. Add 15-30 minutes in the 7-9:30 AM and 5-8 PM rush hours and at fountain time around the Dubai Mall car parks.

Tram, then metro #3
From JBR and the Marina waterfront Hotels on The Walk or the Marina towers far from the station

Tram, then metro

The Dubai Tram runs 11 stops along Al Sufouh Road, the Marina and JBR and meets the Red Line at DMCC and Sobha Realty. If your hotel is on JBR Beach, the tram saves the 10-20 minute walk to the station in the heat, and the same Nol card works on both. It adds a change, not much money.

Timed for the Dubai Fountain #4
Burj Lake, by the Dubai Mall First-timers, families, anyone on a budget

Timed for the Dubai Fountain

The free fountain shows run in the evenings every 30 minutes from about 6 PM, with afternoon shows on some days. Leave the Marina by 4:30 PM on the metro and you arrive with time for Burj Park and the lake promenade before the first show. The schedule changes, so check it the day before.

The reverse trip for the sunset cruise #5
Back to the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower Doing the Burj in the morning and the water at golden hour

The reverse trip for the sunset cruise

Many of our guests do Downtown first and are back at DMCC by mid-afternoon for the 1-hour shared yacht tour, from $32 with check-in 20 minutes before departure. Sunset is about 5:30 PM in December and 7:10 PM in June, so leave Downtown at least 90 minutes before your slot.

The short answer: metro by day, taxi when the group or the hour says so

Take the Metro Red Line from DMCC or Sobha Realty to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall. It is one train with no changes, AED 5-7.5 on a Nol card, and it runs every 3-7 minutes whatever Sheikh Zayed Road is doing. Budget about an hour door to door, most of it the walk at each end.

Take a taxi if you are three or four people (AED 50-70 split is metro money), if you have luggage or a pushchair, if it is 40°C at 2 PM, or if it is past midnight and the trains have stopped. Outside the 7-9:30 AM and 5-8 PM rush hours the drive is 25-40 minutes; inside them add 15-30 minutes, or take the train instead.

The rest of this guide is the detail: the comparison table, the metro step by step, when to leave for the Dubai Fountain, and how to be back at the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower in time for a sunset cruise.

Marina to Burj Khalifa: the options compared

All four options start in the same strip of towers and end at the same lake. The differences are traffic, walking and what you pay per head.

Careem or UberSame as a taxiSimilar or slightly higher, quoted in the appPinning a pickup point among the Marina towers

Third-party fares and timetables change; treat these as budgets and check the RTA or Careem app before you go.

Buses exist, but the Red Line follows Sheikh Zayed Road the whole way and is the faster public option, so we do not plan around them. There is no scheduled boat between the two districts either; if you want the water, keep it for the Marina end of the day.

Step by step: the Red Line from DMCC to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall

This is the trip most of our Marina guests make on their Downtown day. It works the same from Sobha Realty, the second Marina/JLT station; pick whichever is closer to your hotel, or ride the tram to either.

  • 1. Get a Nol card. A Silver card costs about AED 25 including AED 19 of credit and works on the metro, tram and buses; a red paper ticket is about AED 2 plus the fare if you will only ride once or twice. Both are sold at the station machines and ticket office.
  • 2. Walk or tram to DMCC. DMCC is the station for Marina Walk, Marina Mall and the yacht pier side; from JBR take the tram, which connects at DMCC and Sobha Realty. Station sponsor names change, so follow the signs for the Marina/JLT stops.
  • 3. Board the Red Line towards the airport and Centrepoint, the Deira direction. Skip the first carriage unless you are paying double for Gold Class or travelling in the women-and-children section; both are marked on the platform.
  • 4. Ride to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall. No changes. Business Bay is the stop before it, so stand up when you hear that one announced.
  • 5. Take the Metro Link bridge. Follow the signs for the Dubai Mall: the air-conditioned bridge with travelators takes 10-15 minutes and lands you inside the mall. From there the fountain promenade and the Burj Khalifa ticket desks are signposted.
  • 6. Tap out with the same card. Fares are charged by zone on exit; Marina to Downtown is 2-3 zones, AED 5-7.5 on a Silver card, so keep the card in your hand.

Trains run from about 5 AM to midnight or 1 AM depending on the day, with a later start of around 8 AM on Sundays; check the RTA app for the exact last train on your date. Our Dubai Metro guide for tourists has the full station list and the Gold Class question.

When a taxi is the smarter choice

The metro is the right default, but there are four situations where we tell guests to take a taxi from the Marina.

  • You are three or four. Dubai taxis are metered: flag fall about AED 5, about AED 2 per km, minimum fare about AED 12. The 25 km run comes to around AED 50-70 without traffic, which is AED 15-20 per head for four people, door to door, in air conditioning.
  • You have luggage or a pushchair. The Metro Link walk is 10-15 minutes and the mall is enormous; a taxi to the hotel or the mall entrance you actually want saves the afternoon.
  • It is the middle of a summer afternoon. From May to September the walk to the station and across the bridge is the hottest part of the trip. Ride the tram or take a taxi and keep the walking for inside the mall.
  • It is after the last train. If you stayed for the late fountain shows or a long dinner, the metro may already be closed. Cream RTA taxis queue at the mall taxi ranks; Careem, Uber and Hala give you a fixed pickup point when the ranks are busy.

The one time to avoid the car is fountain hour on a Friday or Saturday evening, when the roads around the Dubai Mall car parks slow to a crawl. Arrive by metro, leave by taxi from the rank once the crowd has thinned, or walk back to the station after the last show you want. Our taxi and Careem guide has the fares for every other route.

Timing it: the Dubai Fountain, the sunset and the tickets

Most people making this trip want one of three things: the Burj Khalifa observation deck, the free fountain show, or both in one evening. Timing decides how well it goes.

  • The Dubai Fountain plays on Burj Lake in the evenings every 30 minutes from about 6 PM, with afternoon shows on some days; the schedule changes, so check it the day before. The best free spot is the promenade in front of the Dubai Mall; Burj Park across the lake gives the classic Burj-and-fountain photo.
  • At the Top (levels 124-125) starts from $55 per person with us (SKY on Level 148 from $115) and costs more for the sunset slot; we book the timed slot in advance, because sunset sells out first. Sunset is about 5:30 PM in December and about 7:10 PM in June. Sky Views on the Address Sky View is the cheaper alternative with a similar angle; our Burj Khalifa vs Sky Views comparison weighs the two.
  • The 828 m view for free is Burj Park, the park at the foot of the tower on the edge of Burj Lake. Leave the Marina by 4:30 PM on the metro and you have time for the park, the lake promenade and the first show.

A comfortable evening from the Marina looks like this: metro from DMCC at 4:30 PM, Burj Park and Souk Al Bahar by 5:30 PM, fountain shows from 6 PM, dinner on the lake, and a taxi back to the Marina around 9 PM once the car parks have emptied.

What to do once you are there

Downtown is compact around the lake: the Dubai Mall with its 1,200+ shops and the aquarium tunnel you can walk past for free, Souk Al Bahar across the bridge for dinner with a fountain view, Dubai Opera, and the promenade that loops the lake. Everything is a 5-15 minute walk from the Metro Link exit, and it all stays lively until late.

If you have the whole day, the Dubai Water Canal and its lit waterfall under the Sheikh Zayed Road bridge are one metro stop away at Business Bay. Our Downtown Dubai area guide has a full day plan for the district; the reverse of this trip, with the yacht timings, is in Downtown to Dubai Marina.

Back to the Marina: the evening on the water

The trip works both ways, and the reverse timing matters more, because the Marina end has departures that do not wait. Our 1-hour shared yacht tour leaves hourly from the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower, from $32 per person, with check-in 20 minutes before departure at Level P of the tower and a yacht that leaves strictly on time. DMCC is the station for the pier; from there it is a short taxi, or the tram and a walk.

The Dubai Marina Yacht Party boards at 8:30 PM and sails at 9:00 PM sharp: $99 for four hours with a live DJ, a live BBQ and unlimited soft drinks, 21+ with an original ID. Leave Downtown by 6:30 PM on the metro, earlier by taxi in the Friday and Saturday rush, and you make boarding with a margin. The party ends around 1:00 AM, when the last train may already have gone, so plan a taxi back if you are sleeping in Downtown.

For a group that wants the boat to itself, a private charter starts from AED 400 per hour for a 31 ft boat with captain, fuel, water and soft drinks included, and the sunset slot is the one to book first. Both the shared hour and the party are paid in advance because the slots sell out; the walking directions from DMCC are in our guide to the yacht departure point. And if your Downtown day is followed by a desert evening, the full-day desert safari collects you at your Marina hotel in a 4x4, so that one needs no metro at all.

FAQ

How far is Burj Khalifa from Dubai Marina?

About 25 km along Sheikh Zayed Road. A taxi takes 25-40 minutes and costs around AED 50-70 on the meter outside rush hour; the Metro Red Line from DMCC or Sobha Realty to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall costs AED 5-7.5 on a Nol card and takes about an hour door to door, including the 10-15 minute Metro Link walk into the mall.

Which metro station is closest to Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Mall?

Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall on the Red Line. It is not at the mall door: the air-conditioned Metro Link bridge with travelators takes 10-15 minutes from the platform to the mall, and the fountain promenade is a few minutes further. Business Bay is the stop before it and serves the canal-side hotels.

DMCC or Sobha Realty: which Marina station should I use?

Both are on the Red Line and both reach Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall without a change. DMCC is the stop for Marina Walk, Marina Mall and the yacht pier behind Al Majara Tower; Sobha Realty serves the other end of the Marina. The tram connects with both, so from JBR take whichever the tram reaches first.

How much is a taxi from Dubai Marina to the Dubai Mall?

Budget about AED 50-70 without traffic: flag fall is about AED 5 and the meter runs at about AED 2 per km, with a minimum fare of about AED 12. In the 5-8 PM rush the meter keeps running in the queue, so expect more. Careem and Uber are similar or slightly higher and show the price before you book. Check the app on the day.

What time is the Dubai Fountain show?

In the evenings every 30 minutes from about 6 PM, with afternoon shows on some days; the schedule changes, so check it the day before. The shows are free from the promenade in front of the Dubai Mall and from Burj Park. Arrive by metro rather than by car: the roads around the mall car parks are slowest at fountain time.

Can I visit Burj Khalifa and take a yacht cruise on the same day?

Yes, and it is the classic Marina day. Do Downtown in the morning and early afternoon, ride the Red Line back to DMCC, and check in 20 minutes before your slot on the 1-hour shared yacht tour from $32, which leaves hourly from the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower. Or stay for the fountain and join the yacht party, which boards at 8:30 PM.

Does the Dubai Metro run late enough to get back to the Marina after the fountain?

Usually yes. Trains run from about 5 AM to around midnight or 1 AM depending on the day, so a show at 9 or 10 PM leaves plenty of time; check the last train on the RTA app for your date. If you stay past it, a taxi back to the Marina is about AED 50-70 on the meter and the ranks at the mall run all night.
