Tour on this route: Full-Day Desert Safari in Dubai — From $45 per person, 7 hours.

What are the best things to do in Dubai for first-time visitors?

Five things define a first trip: the full-day desert safari on the Lahbab Red Dunes (7 hours from $45 with hotel pickup), Burj Khalifa with the free Fountain show every 30 minutes from 6 PM, Old Dubai with the AED 1-2 abra across the Creek, the 9-hour Abu Dhabi day for the Grand Mosque (from $45), and the Marina skyline from a shared yacht for $32. Ten more, from the Palm to the sunrise balloon, fill a 5- or 7-day trip.

This guide also answers:

  • Is the desert safari worth doing on a first trip to Dubai?
  • Should I go up Burj Khalifa or just watch the Fountain?
  • Is Abu Dhabi worth a day trip from Dubai?

The top six, in order

1. Desert safari on the Lahbab Red Dunes #1
45-60 minutes east of the city, afternoon to late evening The one experience nearly everyone puts first

1. Desert safari on the Lahbab Red Dunes

Dune bashing, sandboarding, a camel ride, the sunset on the Big Red dunes and then the camp: BBQ buffet, fire show, Tanoura and belly dance in air-conditioned tents. Seven hours from your hotel door and back, from $45 per person or $65 with a 30-minute quad bike, paid on the day. It is first because it is the one day that is nothing like home.

2. Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain #2
Downtown, sunset and evening The 828 m view and the free show below it

2. Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain

The tallest building in the world at 828 m, with At the Top on levels 124-125 from $55 with us and more at sunset, and the Fountain playing free on Burj Lake every 30 minutes from about 6 PM. Do both in one evening: up before sunset, down for the first show, dinner on a Souk Al Bahar terrace for the second.

3. Old Dubai and the abra #3
Al Fahidi, the Creek, the Deira souks; late afternoon The AED 1-2 crossing that is the city's oldest journey

3. Old Dubai and the abra

Wind towers and courtyards in Al Fahidi, the Textile Souk, the abra across the Creek for AED 1-2, then the Gold Souk and Spice Souk on the Deira side and Al Seef's lanterns after dark. It is the Dubai that existed before the towers, it costs almost nothing, and it is best from late afternoon into the evening when the heat drops.

4. Abu Dhabi in a day #4
140 km, 9 hours, 8:00 AM pickup The Grand Mosque and the BAPS Mandir in one loop

4. Abu Dhabi in a day

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque before the midday heat, the BAPS Hindu Mandir, the Corniche and Emirates Palace, Heritage Village, a Ferrari World photo stop and lunch at Yas Mall, then the Dates Market and home. Transport, a licensed guide, mosque registration and water are included from $45 shared, or $245 for a private car for up to 7, paid on the day.

5. The Marina from the water #5
Dubai Marina, the sunset hour The skyline the way it was designed to be seen

5. The Marina from the water

One hour on a luxury yacht from the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower: through the Marina canal, along JBR and Bluewaters, a photo stop in front of Ain Dubai and back with the whole skyline in view. Hourly departures from $32 per person, check-in 20 minutes before, paid in advance because the sunset slots go first. The cheapest luxury in the city.

6. Palm Jumeirah #6
Atlantis, The View, West Beach; a full afternoon Beach, waterpark and the 52nd-floor view

6. Palm Jumeirah

Aquaventure and The Lost Chambers at Atlantis, The View at The Palm on the 52nd floor for about AED 70-100, the beach clubs of Palm West Beach and the free Palm Fountain shows at The Pointe in the evening, with the monorail up the trunk for about AED 20-30 return. From the sea, the Palm is the highlight of every yacht route longer than two hours.

The short answer: five things make a first trip

If you only have three days, do the desert safari, Burj Khalifa with the Fountain, Old Dubai, and the Marina from the water; with five, add Abu Dhabi. Those five are the ones we would insist on for a friend, and everything else on this list is a matter of taste, time and budget. Six of the fifteen are free or nearly free, five are our own tours, and we have tried to be honest about where those belong rather than pushing them to the top.

The ranking is by how much each thing adds for someone seeing Dubai for the first time, not by price or by our own margin. That is why the sunrise balloon, the best morning in the emirate, sits at number 8: at $275 it is not the first thing a visitor on a budget should book. Time needed, cost and the best hour of day are in the table further down, and the itineraries that fit them into 3, 5 and 7 days are linked at the end.

1-5: the essentials

1. The desert safari on the Lahbab Red Dunes. Nothing else on the list is as far from home. The full-day desert safari collects you at your hotel in Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman in an air-conditioned 4x4, drives 45-60 minutes east to the Big Red dunes, runs 30-45 minutes of dune bashing, sandboarding and a camel ride, holds the sunset on the sand, and ends at Al Khayma camp with a BBQ buffet, a fire show, Tanoura and belly dance in air-conditioned tents. Seven hours, from $45 per person or $65 with the 30-minute quad bike, and no prepayment: you agree the date on WhatsApp and pay on the day. It is first because nothing else here is as far from ordinary life, and it costs less than a Burj Khalifa ticket.

2. Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain. The 828 m tower is the reason many people come, and the evening is the way to do it: At the Top (levels 124-125) from $55 per person with us (SKY on Level 148 from $115), more at sunset, with the timed slot booked by us, then down to Burj Lake for the free Fountain show every 30 minutes from about 6 PM, watched from the promenade or a Souk Al Bahar terrace. Burj Park across the lake is the free classic view of the tower. If the ticket price stings, the Sky Views observatory on the Address Sky View is the cheaper alternative; we compare the two in Burj Khalifa or Sky Views. Metro to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall and the air-conditioned Metro Link walk, 10-15 minutes.

3. Old Dubai and the abra. Al Fahidi's wind towers and courtyard cafés, the Textile Souk, the abra across the Creek for AED 1-2 in a few minutes, then the Gold Souk and Spice Souk in Deira and Al Seef's lantern-lit lanes along the water after dark. Go from late afternoon into the evening, when the heat drops and the souks are at their liveliest; the Green Line puts you at Sharaf DG station (formerly Al Fahidi) for the old quarter and Al Ras for the Gold Souk. Our Old Dubai guide has the half-day walk.

4. Abu Dhabi in a day. The Grand Mosque is the most beautiful building in the country and it is 140 km away, so the day needs organising. The Abu Dhabi city tour starts with an 8:00 AM hotel pickup, reaches the mosque before the midday heat for a 40-minute stop with registration handled, then the BAPS Hindu Mandir, the Corniche and Emirates Palace, Heritage Village, a Ferrari World photo stop with lunch at Yas Mall, and the Dates Market before the 1.5-2 hour drive home. Nine hours, from $45 shared with a licensed guide and water, or $245 for a private car for up to 7, no prepayment. Bring a scarf: the mosque dress code is strict. The full day is in Abu Dhabi in one day from Dubai.

5. The Marina from the water. Dubai Marina was built to be looked at from a boat, and the shared 1-hour yacht tour is the cheap way to do it: hourly departures from the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower (Level P), through the Marina canal, along JBR and Bluewaters, a photo stop in front of Ain Dubai and back with the whole skyline in view. From $32 per person, check-in 20 minutes before departure, an original passport or Emirates ID for boarding, full prepayment because the sunset slots sell out first. Book the departure nearest sunset: about 5:30 PM in December, 7:10 PM in June.

6-10: the second tier that fills a 5-day trip

6. Palm Jumeirah. A full afternoon: Aquaventure waterpark and The Lost Chambers aquarium at Atlantis, The View at The Palm on the 52nd floor for about AED 70-100, the beach clubs and sunsets of Palm West Beach, and the free Palm Fountain shows at The Pointe in the evening. The monorail runs up the trunk from the Gateway station by the tram stop for about AED 20-30 return. From the sea the Palm is the highlight of every private charter of three hours or more, which adds the lagoon and a swim stop to the Marina route.

7. JBR, Bluewaters and Ain Dubai. The Beach and The Walk at JBR, a swim at JBR Beach, then the footbridge to Bluewaters Island to stand under Ain Dubai, the observation wheel that is the city's best landmark to photograph from the beach and from the water. Free, reachable by tram, and best from late afternoon into the evening.

8. The sunrise hot air balloon. A pre-dawn pickup, 40-70 minutes at 2,000-4,000 feet over the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve with gazelles, oryx and camels below, then a vintage Land Rover to a Bedouin camp for breakfast, a camel ride and a falcon photo. The sunrise balloon is $275 per person, 4-5 hours door to door, minimum age 7, confirmed with a 30% deposit, and the baskets sell out one to two weeks ahead in season, which runs roughly October to May. It is the best morning in the emirate; it is number 8 only because of the price.

9. Burj Al Arab and the Jumeirah beaches. You photograph the sail from Jumeirah public beach or Sunset Beach and from the canals of Souk Madinat Jumeirah, then spend the rest of the day on Kite Beach. Add the Jumeirah Mosque guided visit for non-Muslims in the morning (about AED 40) and the Etihad Museum if history interests you. The beach part is free.

10. Museum of the Future and the Dubai Frame. The silver torus on Sheikh Zayed Road is the city's best new building inside and out; tickets are about AED 150 and sell out on weekends, so book ahead. The Dubai Frame in Zabeel Park, about AED 50, gives the old-and-new view of the city from its glass bridge. Either is a half day; both can be done between a Downtown morning and the Fountain in the evening.

11-15: with a week, or a specific taste

11. Dubai Mall and the aquarium. 1,200+ shops, the indoor waterfall, and the Dubai Aquarium tunnel, which is free to walk past from the mall floor; the aquarium ticket itself is about AED 150 and more. It sits under Burj Khalifa, so it belongs to the same evening as number 2 rather than a day of its own.

12. The Marina yacht party. For anyone 21 or over, the Dubai Marina yacht party is the best night out in the city for the money: $99 for four hours from 9 PM to 1 AM with a live DJ, a live BBQ and unlimited soft drinks, past Ain Dubai, the Palm and Burj Al Arab. Boarding at 8:30 PM at the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower, original ID, smart casual, paid in advance. It is number 12 only because it excludes families and under-21s.

13. The Dubai Water Canal and Al Seef by night. Two free evening walks. The Canal's mechanical waterfall pours from the Sheikh Zayed Road bridge, lit after dark, with the Business Bay promenade alongside; Al Seef runs along the Creek with restaurants at the water. Both are for the night when you do not want a ticket.

14. Global Village and Miracle Garden. Seasonal, in the Dubailand area 25-35 minutes by taxi from Downtown or the Marina (about AED 60-90). Global Village runs roughly late October to late April or early May, Miracle Garden roughly November to May; the dates change every year, so check the current season before you plan a day around them. In season, Global Village is one of the best nights out for families.

15. A mountain day: Hatta or Jebel Jais. Hatta is 130 km east on the E44, 1.5-2 hours, with kayaking on the turquoise Hatta Dam, the Heritage Village and, in season, Hatta Wadi Hub; Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah is 150-170 km and about 2 hours from the Marina, the UAE's highest peak at 1,934 m with the 2.8 km Jais Flight zipline. Each is a full day and only makes the list with a week to spend; on a shorter trip the desert safari gives you the landscape with the evening included.

Free or nearly free: 3, 7, 9, 11, 13 and the Fountain part of 2. Our tours: 1, 4, 5, 8 and 12.

Fitting them into 3, 5 or 7 days

Three days cover the essentials without rushing: a Downtown day for Burj Khalifa, the mall and the Fountain (2, 11, 13); the desert safari afternoon and evening (1) after a slow morning; and a Marina and Palm day that ends with the sunset yacht hour and an evening on JBR (5, 6, 7). Old Dubai (3) fits into the morning of the safari day. The hour-by-hour version is Dubai in 3 days.

Five days add the Abu Dhabi day (4), a full Old Dubai afternoon (3) and, if the budget allows, the balloon (8) on the morning after a rest day, since the pickup is before dawn. The full plan is Dubai in 5 days. Seven days add the Jumeirah beaches (9), the museums (10), the yacht party (12), Global Village in season (14) and the mountain day (15), with a beach day in between. If you would rather see the days laid out on a map with our tours already placed, the free SB AI planner does exactly that.

Booking our tours is deliberately simple. Hotel pickup is included on the safari, the Abu Dhabi day (Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman) and the balloon (Dubai city); the safari and Abu Dhabi are confirmed on WhatsApp with no prepayment and paid on the day; the balloon takes a 30% deposit and should be booked one to two weeks ahead; the yacht hour and the party are paid in advance because the slots sell out. All of our drivers, guides, pilots and crews are licensed.

What to skip on a first visit, honestly

Do not plan a day around Ain Dubai. The wheel is the best landmark on the coast to photograph, from JBR, from the footbridge and from the water; treat it as a view, not an attraction to schedule. Do not do two observation decks: pick Burj Khalifa or Sky Views, and get the other height from The View at The Palm or from a yacht. Skip Global Village out of season and skip Jebel Jais with fewer than seven days; the safari gives you the landscape in an evening.

Louvre Abu Dhabi is not on the Abu Dhabi day, and it deserves its own morning rather than a squeezed hour: leave it for a second trip or a second Abu Dhabi day. Do not hire a car for a first visit: taxis, the metro and tours with pickup cover everything on this list, and the one road you might be tempted by, the E44 to the dunes, is exactly the one to leave to a licensed driver.

And the honest note on our own tours: the balloon is the best morning in the emirate, but if the budget is tight the $45 safari gives you the desert and an evening for a sixth of the price, and the yacht party is only for the 21+ crowd. FAQ

How many days do you need in Dubai for a first visit?

Three days cover the essentials: a Downtown day with Burj Khalifa and the Fountain, the desert safari afternoon and evening, and a Marina and Palm day with the sunset yacht hour. Five days add Abu Dhabi, a proper Old Dubai afternoon and the balloon. Seven days add the Jumeirah beaches, the museums, the yacht party and a mountain day, with a beach day to rest.

Is the desert safari worth doing on a first trip to Dubai?

Yes, and we rank it first. For $45 per person ($65 with the 30-minute quad bike) the 7-hour safari includes hotel pickup, 30-45 minutes of dune bashing, sandboarding, a camel ride, the sunset on the dunes and the camp with a BBQ buffet, fire show, Tanoura and belly dance. It is the day least like anywhere else you have been, and it is paid on the day with no prepayment.

Should I go up Burj Khalifa or just watch the Fountain?

Do both in one evening if the budget allows: At the Top on levels 124-125 costs from $55 per person with us and more at sunset (SKY on Level 148 from $115), and the Fountain below is free every 30 minutes from about 6 PM. If you go up only once in Dubai, choose between Burj Khalifa and the cheaper Sky Views observatory and take your second height from a yacht or The View at The Palm.

Is Abu Dhabi worth a day trip from Dubai?

Yes, for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque alone, and the BAPS Hindu Mandir, the Corniche, Emirates Palace and Yas Island make it a full day. The tour leaves at 8:00 AM, covers 140 km each way and is back after about 9 hours, from $45 shared or $245 for a private car for up to 7, with a licensed guide, mosque registration and water included and no prepayment.

What is the best thing to do in Dubai at night?

For anyone 21 or over, the Dubai Marina yacht party: $99 for 9 PM to 1 AM with a live DJ, a live BBQ and the lit skyline, the Palm and Burj Al Arab from the water. For families and under-21s, the desert camp evening on the safari, the free Fountain shows from 6 PM, Marina Walk and JBR, the Water Canal waterfall and Al Seef on the Creek.

What can I do in Dubai for free?

The Dubai Fountain shows every 30 minutes from 6 PM, Burj Park's view of Burj Khalifa, Al Fahidi and the souks with the abra for AED 1-2, JBR Beach, The Walk and the footbridge to Bluewaters under Ain Dubai, Kite Beach and Sunset Beach with Burj Al Arab, the Palm Fountain at The Pointe, the Water Canal waterfall and Al Seef by night. Six of our fifteen are free or nearly free.
