Full-Day Desert Safari in Dubai — From $45 per person

Three days is enough for the Dubai most people come for, if the days are ordered by geography. Day 1 is Downtown on foot and by metro: Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall and the Fountain at dusk. Day 2 starts in Old Dubai, across the Creek by abra for AED 1-2, and ends in the Lahbab dunes on our 7-hour desert safari, collected at your hotel. Day 3 is the coast: the Palm in the morning, JBR in the afternoon and the skyline from the water at sunset on a shared yacht hour from $32 — or the 9 PM yacht party if you are 21+.

Tour on this route: Full-Day Desert Safari in Dubai — From $45 per person, 7 hours.

Is 3 days enough for Dubai?

Yes, for the core of the city: Downtown and the Fountain on day 1, Old Dubai and the 7-hour desert safari on day 2, the Palm, JBR and a sunset yacht hour on day 3. Budget roughly $210 per person for tours, tickets and transport, plus the hotel and meals. Abu Dhabi and the balloon need a fourth and fifth day.

The three days at a glance

Day 1: Downtown #1
Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, the Fountain Metro day, no taxis needed

Day 1: Downtown

The Red Line does the work: Museum of the Future in the morning if you booked it, Burj Khalifa or the cheaper Sky Views in the early afternoon, Dubai Mall and the free aquarium tunnel walk-past, then Burj Park and the Fountain shows from 6 PM every 30 minutes. Dinner on the Souk Al Bahar terraces facing the lake.

Day 2 morning: Old Dubai #2
Al Fahidi, the abra, the souks Three hours before the heat, back by lunch

Day 2 morning: Old Dubai

Green Line to Sharaf DG station (formerly Al Fahidi) for the wind-tower lanes and the Textile Souk, an abra across the Creek for AED 1-2, then the Gold and Spice Souks in Deira. It is the oldest and cheapest morning of the trip, and it ends early on purpose: the desert owns the afternoon and the 4x4 collects you at the hotel.

Day 2 afternoon: the desert #3
Lahbab Red Dunes, 45-60 minutes from the city The one day everyone remembers, from $45

Day 2 afternoon: the desert

Hotel pickup in an air-conditioned 4x4, 30-45 minutes of dune bashing on the Big Red dunes, sandboarding, a camel ride and sunset, then Al Khayma camp: BBQ buffet, unlimited drinks, fire show, Tanoura and belly dance in air-conditioned tents. Seven hours door to door, $65 with the 30-minute quad bike, no prepayment.

Day 3: the Palm, JBR and the Marina by sea #4
Atlantis, The View, JBR beach, the yacht pier Beach morning, skyline at sunset from $32

Day 3: the Palm, JBR and the Marina by sea

The Palm from The View at The Palm or a morning at Aquaventure, the monorail down the trunk, then JBR beach and the Bluewaters footbridge for the Ain Dubai photo. At sunset, the shared yacht hour from the pier at Al Majara Tower: the Marina canal, JBR, Bluewaters and the photo stop under the wheel.

Optional finale: the yacht party #5
9 PM-1 AM from the same Marina pier 21+, $99 all in, the last night

Optional finale: the yacht party

A floating nightclub rather than a boat trip: 25-45 guests, a live DJ, a live BBQ and unlimited soft drinks, four hours past Bluewaters, the Palm lagoon and Burj Al Arab lit for the night. Boarding is 8:30 PM at the pier behind Al Majara Tower, the yacht leaves at 9 PM sharp, original ID mandatory.

How the three days fit together

Dubai runs 60 km along the coast, so a good short itinerary keeps each day in one part of the city and uses the two things that cost nothing in time: the metro and hotel pickup. Day 1 is Downtown, reached by the Red Line from anywhere. Day 2 is the two extremes of the city, the old Creek in the morning and the dunes from the afternoon, with our 4x4 collecting you at the hotel so there is no transport to organise. Day 3 is the coast — the Palm, JBR and the Marina — which are 20-30 minutes apart by taxi and end at the yacht pier.

The desert is on day 2 for a reason: it finishes late in the evening, so it should not be your last night before an early flight, and it leaves day 3 free for the sunset on the water. If your flight lands in the evening, count the arrival day as day 0 and start the plan the next morning.

MorningAfternoonEvening
Day 1Museum of the Future (optional) and the metro to Burj Khalifa/Dubai MallAt the Top or Sky Views, Dubai Mall, the aquarium tunnelBurj Park, the Fountain from 6 PM, dinner at Souk Al Bahar
Day 2Al Fahidi, the abra across the Creek, Gold and Spice SouksHotel pickup for the 7-hour desert safari: dune bashing, sandboarding, camel ride, sunsetAl Khayma camp: BBQ, fire show, Tanoura, belly dance; back late evening
Day 3Palm Jumeirah: The View at The Palm or Aquaventure, monorailJBR beach and The Walk, the footbridge to BluewatersShared yacht hour at sunset from $32; yacht party at 9 PM (21+)

Where to sleep: Downtown or Business Bay for days 1 and 2, the Marina or JBR if you would rather walk to the pier on day 3. The safari and the party work from either — pickup is anywhere in Dubai, and the pier is a taxi or a Red Line ride to DMCC station.

If you would rather see this on a map than in a table, the free SB AI planner lays the three days out with the tours in place; the where to stay guide settles the hotel question by area.

Day 1: Downtown — Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall and the Fountain

Start on Sheikh Zayed Road and work down the Red Line. Everything on this day is walkable from Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station, which connects to the mall by the air-conditioned Metro Link bridge — a 10-15 minute walk with travelators. Buy a Silver Nol card at the first station (about AED 25 including AED 19 of credit); fares are roughly AED 3-7.5 per ride.

  • 9 AM — Museum of the Future (optional, about AED 150; it sells out on weekends, so book ahead or skip it). It sits on Sheikh Zayed Road by Emirates Towers, a short Red Line hop from Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall.
  • 11 AM — the view. Burj Khalifa's At the Top on levels 124-125 starts from $55 per person with us and costs more at sunset; Sky Views Observatory on the Address Sky View is the cheaper alternative with the Burj in the frame. Our Burj Khalifa vs Sky Views comparison picks for you.
  • 1 PM — Dubai Mall. Lunch, then the Aquarium tunnel, which is free to walk past; the aquarium ticket itself is about AED 150 and can be skipped on a 3-day plan.
  • 5 PM — Burj Park and Souk Al Bahar. The free classic view of the tower is from the park below it. Cross to Souk Al Bahar for the lake terraces before the crowds.
  • 6 PM onwards — the Fountain. Free shows on Burj Lake every 30 minutes through the evening; stand on the Souk Al Bahar bridge or the lakeside promenade. Dinner on the terraces, or Dubai Opera if you booked a show.

Rush hour on Sheikh Zayed Road runs 5-8 PM, and the Dubai Mall car parks jam at Fountain time — another reason this is a metro day, not a taxi day.

Day 2: Old Dubai in the morning, the desert from the afternoon

Old Dubai is at its best in the late afternoon, but on a 3-day plan it takes the morning because the desert owns the rest of the day. Go early, when the souks are opening and the Creek is still cool. Take the Green Line to Sharaf DG for the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood — wind towers, courtyard cafés, the Coffee Museum — and the Textile Souk along the water. Then the abra: AED 1-2 for a few minutes across the Creek to Deira, and a walk to the Gold Souk and Spice Souk (Al Ras station for the way back). Be back at the hotel for lunch and a rest before the pickup.

From the afternoon the full-day desert safari takes over. The 4x4 collects you at your hotel — anywhere in Dubai, and in Sharjah and Ajman — and drives 45-60 minutes out to the Lahbab desert. Dune bashing comes first, 30-45 minutes on the Big Red dunes with the driver adjusting the intensity to the group, then sandboarding, the optional quad bike or buggy, the camel ride and falcon photos as the light turns gold. After sunset Al Khayma camp takes over: henna, the shisha station, a BBQ buffet with vegetarian and gluten-free dishes, unlimited water, soft drinks, tea and Arabic coffee, then the fire show, Tanoura and belly dance in air-conditioned tents before the drive back.

It is $45 per person, $65 with the 30-minute quad bike ride, and there is no prepayment: you agree the date on WhatsApp and pay on the day. Eat lightly 2-3 hours before pickup, wear sandals or shoes you do not mind filling with sand, and bring a light jacket between December and February. The dune bashing is not recommended for pregnant women, people with back or heart problems or infants under 3.

Day 3: the Palm, JBR and the Marina from the water

This is the coast day and it moves south-west along the shore, so the sunset ends it at the yacht pier.

  • Morning — Palm Jumeirah. From the Marina it is 12-15 km and 20-30 minutes by taxi (about AED 35-50); from Downtown about 25 km and 25-35 minutes (about AED 50-70). Choose one: The View at The Palm on the 52nd floor (about AED 70-100) for the shape of the island from above, or Aquaventure at Atlantis, which is a whole day in itself. The Palm Monorail runs from the Gateway station at the base of the trunk to Atlantis in about 15 minutes, roughly AED 20-30 return. Palm West Beach is the easy stroll afterwards.
  • Afternoon — JBR. Back on the mainland, The Beach and The Walk at JBR are the beach, the cafés and the shade in one strip; the footbridge to Bluewaters puts Ain Dubai, the observation wheel, in your photos from the island side.
  • Sunset — the shared yacht hour. Check in 20 minutes before departure at the marina pier on Level P of Al Majara Tower, Dubai Marina, with an original passport or Emirates ID; shoes come off to protect the decks. The shared yacht tour runs the Marina canal, JBR and Bluewaters with a photo stop in front of Ain Dubai and returns along the skyline — from $32, full prepayment because the hourly slots sell out.
  • Evening — dinner or the party. Marina Walk is the 7 km loop of restaurants outside the pier. Or, if everyone is 21+, the Dubai Marina yacht party: boarding 8:30 PM at the same pier, departure 9 PM sharp, four hours with a live DJ, a live BBQ and unlimited soft drinks past the Palm and Burj Al Arab for $99, paid in advance.

For a group of up to 6 who want the sunset to themselves, a private charter replaces the shared hour: the 31 ft Sealine is from AED 400 per hour with a 3-hour minimum, captain, fuel, water and ice included — AED 1,200 for the boat, or AED 200 each for six, with a swim stop off the Palm in daylight. The sunset slot is the most requested one; it is confirmed with the marina before you pay anything.

Budget for the three days (per person, without hotel and meals)

The table covers what the plan above actually costs in tickets, tours and transport. Third-party prices vary by day and season, so treat them as budgets and check the official sites before you go; our tour prices are fixed on the tour pages.

Add it up and the core plan is roughly $210 per person in tours, tickets and transport; with the Museum of the Future and the yacht party it is about $350. Hotels and meals by area are in how much a Dubai trip costs.

Transport for the three days

You need a Nol card, one or two taxis and nothing else. The Red Line links Downtown (Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall) with the Marina (DMCC and Sobha Realty stations) in 2-3 fare zones, about AED 5-7.5, and the tram from DMCC reaches JBR and the Palm Gateway. Trains run from about 5 AM to midnight or 1 AM depending on the day, later on Sundays, so the metro is fine for the return from the Fountain.

Taxis are metered and inexpensive: about AED 5 flag fall, about AED 2 per km, minimum fare about AED 12; Careem and Hala book the same cars from your phone. Avoid Sheikh Zayed Road at 7-9:30 AM and 5-8 PM, when the 25-40 minute Downtown-to-Marina drive gains 15-30 minutes. The Downtown to Dubai Marina guide times the trip for the sunset departure.

The two things you do not need to organise are day 2 evening and, if you take it, the Abu Dhabi day on a longer trip: the safari is door to door from your hotel, and the party and the shared hour leave from a pier that is a short taxi from DMCC station or a walk from the Marina hotels.

What to drop if you are short, and what to add with a fourth day

If a flight eats half a day, cut in this order: the Museum of the Future first, then the paid Burj Khalifa ticket (Burj Park below it is free and the Fountain does not need a ticket), then Aquaventure in favour of The View. Do not cut the desert or the sunset on the water; they are the two hours of the trip that do not exist anywhere else. Keep the Old Dubai morning only if you are staying on the Creek side or can be there by 9 AM.

With a fourth day, add the Abu Dhabi city tour: 8:00 AM hotel pickup, the Grand Mosque before the crowds, the BAPS Mandir, the Corniche, Heritage Village and a Ferrari World photo stop, back in the evening, from $45 with no prepayment. With a fourth morning rather than a day, the sunrise balloon fits before a late flight: pre-dawn pickup, 40-70 minutes over the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, breakfast at a Bedouin camp and back by mid-morning, $275 with a 30% deposit and 1-2 weeks of notice because the baskets sell out. Both are laid out day by day in the 5-day itinerary, and the month you travel changes the timings — see best time to visit Dubai.

FAQ

Is 3 days enough for Dubai?

Yes, for the core of the city: Downtown and the Fountain on day 1, Old Dubai and the 7-hour desert safari on day 2, the Palm, JBR and a sunset yacht hour on day 3. Budget roughly $210 per person for tours, tickets and transport, plus the hotel and meals. Abu Dhabi and the balloon need a fourth and fifth day.

Which day should I do the desert safari on?

Day 2. The safari collects you at the hotel in the afternoon and returns late in the evening after dinner and the shows, so it should not be the night before an early flight and it leaves day 3 free for the sunset on the water. There is no prepayment, so the date can move on WhatsApp if your plans change.

How do I get from Downtown to Dubai Marina?

Red Line from Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall to DMCC or Sobha Realty, about AED 5-7.5 on a Nol card, then a short taxi or the tram to JBR and the yacht pier. A taxi covers the 25 km in 25-40 minutes for about AED 50-70, longer in the 5-8 PM rush hour. Leave Downtown by 3 PM for a sunset departure.

Where should I stay for 3 days in Dubai?

Downtown or Business Bay if the Burj view and the metro matter most; the Marina or JBR if you want the beach and a walk to the yacht pier on day 3. Both work with the plan: the desert safari picks up anywhere in Dubai, and the pier at Al Majara Tower is a Red Line ride to DMCC station plus a short taxi from Downtown.

Can I fit Abu Dhabi into 3 days?

Only by giving up a day. The Abu Dhabi tour is 9 hours from an 8:00 AM hotel pickup — the Grand Mosque, BAPS Mandir, the Corniche, Heritage Village and Yas — so it replaces the Palm and Marina day rather than adding to it. On a 3-day trip we would keep Dubai; with 4 or 5 days, add Abu Dhabi from $45 with no prepayment.

Do I need to book the tours before I arrive?

The desert safari is agreed on WhatsApp with no prepayment, so a few days ahead is enough. The shared yacht hour and the yacht party are paid in advance and the slots sell out, so book them once your dates are fixed. The balloon, if you add a morning, needs 1-2 weeks of notice and a 30% deposit.

How much does 3 days in Dubai cost per person?

For the plan above, roughly $210 per person in tours, tickets and transport: the desert safari from $45, the shared yacht hour from $32, Burj Khalifa from $55, The View at The Palm about AED 70-100, a Nol card and two taxis. The yacht party ($99) and the Museum of the Future (about AED 150) bring it to about $350. Hotel and meals are on top.
