Alcohol Laws in Dubai for Tourists: Where You Can Drink

Dubai's alcohol rules for visitors: the legal age of 21, licensed hotel bars and beach clubs, buying from MMI or African+Eastern with your passport, no drinking in public, zero tolerance for drink-driving — and how the yacht party, private charters and the balloon fit in.

Dubai Marina Yacht Party — $99 per person

Dubai is famous for its nightlife and it is still a city that respects its traditions, so the rules around a cold beer or a cocktail are clear and worth knowing before the first night out. The laws have relaxed a lot in recent years — tourists can buy alcohol from the two main retailers with a passport, the 30% municipality tax on it has gone — but the red lines have not moved: you drink in licensed venues or your own room, never on the street or the beach, you are 21 or over, and there is zero tolerance for drink-driving. This guide covers where you can drink, how buying works, the fines to avoid, and which of our tours involve a drink and which — the balloon — never do.

Can tourists drink alcohol in Dubai?

Yes, at 21 and over, in licensed venues — hotel bars and restaurants, licensed clubs and beach clubs — or in your hotel room with alcohol bought at the duty-free or a licensed store. Not on the street, in parks or on public beaches.

Where a drink is legal, and where it is not

Licensed venues #1
Hotel bars, clubs, beach clubs Drinking with a view, legally

Licensed venues

Almost every four- and five-star hotel has a licensed bar or restaurant, and the private clubs and beach clubs — the JBR beach clubs, the Marina rooftops — are licensed too. If you want a drink by the water, this is where: a licensed beach club, not the public beach next to it.

Your own room #2
Hotel room or private residence Duty-free and shop purchases

Your own room

What you bought at the airport duty-free or at a licensed store you drink at the hotel or in a private home. And after a night out, the way home is a taxi or a ride-hailing app to the door — visible intoxication in public can mean a fine or a night in custody.

The yacht party #3
21+, daily at 9 PM The night out on the water

The yacht party

The Marina yacht party is strictly 21+ with an original ID at the pier, and the ticket covers unlimited water, soft drinks and juices with the live BBQ; outside food and drinks do not come on board. It is the loud night on the water, run inside the rules.

Your own bar on the water #4
Private yacht charter Bringing your own

Your own bar on the water

A private charter is the one format where you bring your own drinks: your yacht, your guest list, your bar, with unlimited water and ice on board and a captain who stays sober for everyone. It is the most cost-effective private bar in the city, priced by the boat and the hours.

The legal drinking age and the ID check

You must be 21 to drink alcohol in Dubai. Bars and clubs check ID at the door — a passport or a clear copy — and they check it whatever age you look, so keep a photo of your passport on your phone and the original at the hotel. The same age applies on the water: the yacht party is 21+ with an original ID at boarding.

Where you can drink

Legally, in licensed venues and in private. Licensed venues are the hotel bars and restaurants — almost every four- and five-star hotel has one — and the licensed clubs and beach clubs, such as the beach clubs along JBR or the Marina rooftops. Private means your hotel room or a private residence, with alcohol you bought at the duty-free or a licensed store.

The reverse list is the one that matters: not on the street, not in parks, not on public beaches, not in the car. If the plan is a drink by the sea, it is a licensed beach club; if the plan is a drink with the skyline, it is a rooftop, a hotel bar or a boat.

Buying alcohol as a tourist

The rules are simple now. The two main liquor retailers are MMI and African+Eastern, and as a visitor you buy there by showing your original passport — no residence licence is needed. The 30% municipality tax that used to sit on top of every bottle has been removed, so shop prices are far more reasonable than the city's reputation suggests. Duty-free at the airport on arrival is the other route.

The red lines: how to avoid a fine

Three rules cover almost every case a tourist gets wrong, and none of them are grey.

  • Public drinking is prohibited — on the street, in parks, on public beaches. Licensed beach clubs are the exception because they are licensed.
  • Public intoxication — being visibly drunk and disorderly outside a venue — can mean a fine or detention. After a night out, take a taxi straight back to the hotel.
  • Drinking and driving is zero tolerance. One sip is enough for serious trouble. Careem, Uber or a taxi, every time.

Alcohol on our tours: what is and is not included

The Marina yacht party is the night out — 21+, ID at the pier, live DJ and BBQ, and the ticket covers unlimited water, soft drinks and juices; no outside food or drinks come on board. A private yacht charter is the format where you bring your own: your bar, your guests, water and ice provided. The desert safari camp serves unlimited soft drinks, tea and Arabic coffee with the BBQ, and during Ramadan any alcohol service and the entertainment may be limited or modified.

The sunrise hot air balloon never involves alcohol — none on the flight or in the vehicles, for safety — which also makes it the best way to clear your head the morning after a big night. Ask us on WhatsApp before you book if the drinks question matters for your group; the honest answer is quicker than the surprise at the pier.
