A Musandam dhow cruise is a full-day trip from Dubai: about 12-13 hours from pickup to drop-off, with a road border crossing each way, four to five hours on the water among fjord-like inlets, a snorkel stop, lunch and a chance of dolphins. Listings put Khasab trips from Dubai at roughly AED 650-750 per adult with transfers and lunch, and shorter Dibba cruises from about AED 220. Check the entry rules with the official sources. We do not run it; this guide explains what to expect and what we run on the water at home.

Five ways to spend a day on a boat from Dubai
#1
Khasab full-day dhow cruise (Oman)
The classic Musandam day: a long drive and a border crossing, then four to five hours on a dhow among steep-sided inlets with lunch on board, a snorkel stop and a good chance of dolphins. Full-day trips with transfers and lunch are listed at roughly AED 650-750 per adult. It is the most rewarding option and the longest day.
#2
Dibba and the east-coast cruise
Dibba cruises start closer to Dubai and run a little shorter, with a boat trip along the Musandam coast and a swim or snorkel stop. Listings put them at about AED 220-450 per adult with transfers and lunch. The boats usually sail from the Omani side of Dibba, so passports and entry rules still apply.
#3
Dubai Creek dhow dinner cruise
A traditional wooden boat on the Creek at dusk, with the old-town lights, a buffet and no passport check. It is calm, close to your hotel and a few hours long, not a fjord expedition. Our dhow cruise guides compare the Creek and Marina versions, with prices and what is included.
#4
Our 1-hour shared yacht, Dubai Marina
A shared 1-hour cruise through the Marina, past JBR and Bluewaters, with a photo stop at Ain Dubai, a red carpet at the pier and chilled bottled water. Departures are hourly, full prepayment secures your seat, and there is no border and no visa, though you make your own way to the pier because no hotel transfer is included.
#5
Our 90-minute Marina speedboat tour
An open speedboat shared with up to 22 guests, with live commentary, life jackets and photo stops at JBR, Ain Dubai, Atlantis and the Burj Al Arab. It is the right answer when you want the sea and the skyline in one short loop. Full prepayment confirms your seat, and the boat leaves on time.
Musandam in one minute
Musandam is a rugged Omani peninsula at the tip of the Strait of Hormuz, often called the Norway of Arabia for its steep, fjord-like inlets (khors). From Dubai it is a full-day trip of about 12-13 hours from hotel pickup to drop-off: roughly 3 hours by road each way including a UAE exit post and an Omani entry post, and four to five hours on the water. A dhow is a traditional wooden boat, and on the trip it carries you through the inlets with lunch on board, a snorkel stop and a good chance of dolphins.
The honest version: it is a long day for a boat ride. About half of it is in a vehicle, the border queue can add an hour, and the sea is sometimes rough enough to shorten the cruise. It is worth it for the scenery and the wildlife, in the cool months, if you have a passport that clears the border, a valid UAE visa that allows re-entry, and a full day to spare. It is not worth it if you are short of time, prone to seasickness or travelling with babies.
We do not run Musandam trips. This guide is for guests who ask whether it is worth it, and it ends with the boat days we do run in Dubai. The wider choice of day trips is in best day trips from Dubai.
Khasab or Dibba: the two ways to do it
Most Musandam trips from Dubai start from one of two places. Khasab is the main town and the one with the dramatic inlets; Dibba is closer to Dubai and gives a shorter day. Prices below are what booking sites list, rounded and converted from dollars, and they change with the season and the group size.
| Option | Where the boat leaves | Day length (approx.) | Border | Price listed (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Khasab full-day dhow cruise | Khasab, Oman | 12-13 hours from pickup to drop-off | UAE exit and Omani entry by road, each way | About AED 650-750 per adult with transfers and lunch |
| Dibba cruise | Dibba, on the east coast | About 9-10 hours | Usually yes: the boats sail from the Omani side | About AED 220-450 per adult with transfers and lunch |
| Private boat | Khasab or Dibba | Your schedule | Same rules | Much higher; ask the operator |
Prices are rounded from third-party listings and converted from US dollars; confirm what is included and which passports are accepted.
Both options normally include pickup from a Dubai hotel, lunch and soft drinks, snorkel gear and a guide. Ask each operator what is not included, because visa fees, exit fees, children's fares and drinks can sit outside the headline price.
The border, the visa and re-entry
Whether you need an Oman visa depends on your nationality and your UAE status, and the rules change, so treat this as a checklist, not advice. Ask the operator in writing what you need, and confirm with the Royal Oman Police e-visa service. On the UAE side, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) and the Dubai GDRFA publish the entry and re-entry rules; a single-entry UAE visit visa may not let you back in after a land border, so ask the operator what yours needs.
Some operators include the Omani visa and the exit fee in the price, and some collect them on the day. Take your original passport, valid for several months, and your Emirates ID if you are a resident. Children need passports too. If your documents are not right, you can be turned back at the post, so ask the operator about its refund policy before you pay.
What the cruise is like
A Musandam dhow is a wooden boat with cushions and a canopy on the deck. Expect a mix of cruising, a stop in a sheltered inlet for swimming and snorkelling, a buffet lunch and a chance to see dolphins. Typical highlights are listed here, and which you get depends on the weather and the operator:
- Fjord-like inlets (khors): steep rock walls drop into deep, still water; Khor Ash Sham is the best known.
- Dolphins: bottlenose dolphins are often seen alongside the boat, but sightings are never guaranteed.
- Snorkel and swim stop: masks and fins are normally provided; the water is clear on calm days.
- Telegraph Island: a small island with the ruins of a 19th-century British telegraph station, often a photo stop.
- Lunch on board: a buffet with rice, grilled meat or fish and salads; ask for vegetarian options in advance.
- Khasab village: some trips include a short wander and a look at the fort, if the schedule allows.
Seasickness is the main complaint in rough water, so take tablets before boarding if you are prone to it. Wear light clothing, a hat and sunscreen, and bring a layer for the drive in an air-conditioned vehicle.
A Khasab day, hour by hour
Timings vary by operator and by queue at the border. This is the shape of a typical day, based on listed schedules.
- 6:30 AM: hotel pickup in Dubai.
- About 8:00-9:30 AM: the UAE exit and the Omani entry; this is where the queue can add time.
- About 10:00 AM: the dhow leaves Khasab harbour.
- 10:00 AM-4:00 PM: cruise, swim and snorkel stop, lunch on board and a chance of dolphins.
- 4:00 PM onwards: back at the harbour and the drive to the border and Dubai.
- About 7:00-8:00 PM: drop-off at your hotel, depending on the border.
Season, weather and who should skip it
October to April is the season: clear, calm and comfortable. In summer it is hot and humid, though the sea is warm and the cruise is shaded, and wind or swell can shorten or cancel a trip in any month. Ask the operator what happens if the cruise cannot sail, because refund and rebooking policies differ.
Skip the trip if you are pregnant, travel with a baby, have back or heart problems, or are prone to seasickness. It is also a poor choice if your passport or visa situation is uncertain. For a calm boat day without any of this, stay in Dubai: the dhow cruise guide for Marina and Creek and the Creek dhow dinner cruise cover the options.
A boat day closer to home
If the boat is the point and the border is not, we run it in Dubai. The 1-hour shared yacht tour is from $32 per person: a premium yacht through Dubai Marina, past JBR and Bluewaters, with a photo stop at Ain Dubai. You meet at the marina pier (Level P, Al Majara Tower) 20 minutes before departure, take your shoes off to board and carry an original passport or Emirates ID. Departures are hourly and full prepayment confirms your seat.
The Marina speedboat tour is 90 minutes from $45 per person, shared with up to 22 guests, with live commentary and photo stops at JBR, Ain Dubai, Atlantis and the Burj Al Arab. For a private group, a charter from our yacht fleet starts from AED 400 per hour; see shared yacht tours in Dubai Marina, private yacht rental and sunset yacht cruises for the detail. On dry land, the full-day desert safari is 7 hours from $45 with hotel pickup. For other big days out, see the east coast and Ras Al Khaimah guides.
FAQ
How long is a Musandam dhow cruise from Dubai?
About 12-13 hours from hotel pickup to drop-off for a Khasab trip: roughly 3 hours by road each way including the border, and four to five hours on the water. Dibba cruises are shorter, about 9-10 hours.
How much does a Musandam trip cost from Dubai?
Booking sites list full-day Khasab trips at roughly AED 650-750 per adult with transfers and lunch, and Dibba cruises at about AED 220-450. Check what is included, because visa and exit fees may be extra.
Do I need a visa for Musandam?
It depends on your nationality and your UAE status, and the rules change. Ask the operator what you need and confirm with the Royal Oman Police e-visa service. Also ask whether your UAE visa lets you re-enter, and check with ICP or GDRFA if unsure.
Will I see dolphins in Musandam?
Often, but not always. Bottlenose dolphins are commonly seen near the boats in the inlets. Sightings are never guaranteed, so treat them as a bonus on top of the scenery and the swim.
What is the best time of year for a Musandam cruise?
October to April, when the weather is clear and comfortable. In summer the heat and humidity are heavy, and wind or swell can shorten or cancel a cruise in any month.
Is Musandam worth it for a day trip?
Yes if you want fjords, dolphins and a swim and can spare 12-13 hours with a clear passport and visa situation. If you are short of time or prone to seasickness, a shorter boat day in Dubai is the easier choice.
Do you run Musandam trips from Dubai?
No. We run a 1-hour shared yacht from $32, a 90-minute Marina speedboat from $45 and private yacht charters from AED 400 per hour, all in Dubai. For Musandam, book with a local operator and check the border rules.
