Al Ain is a good day trip from Dubai if you leave early and pick three stops, not six. It is about 140 km, 1.5-2 hours each way by car, and rewards you with a free palm oasis, an old fort, Jebel Hafeet (about 1,250 m) and a zoo from about AED 32. Do the oasis and fort in the cool morning, keep the zoo or the museums for the afternoon and end on the mountain at sunset. This guide covers getting there without a tour, what is free, the heat, and when an Abu Dhabi day is the easier choice.

How far is Al Ain from Dubai?
About 140 km, which is 1.5-2 hours each way by car depending on where you start in Dubai and the traffic. A day trip therefore includes 3.5-4 hours of driving, so plan three stops, not six.

Four stops that make the Al Ain day
#1
Al Ain Oasis and Al Jahili Fort
The core of the day. The oasis is a shaded walk through date palms and old irrigation channels, free to enter, and it is part of Al Ain's UNESCO World Heritage listing. The fort is a short drive away, was built in the 1890s and takes about an hour. Start here while it is cool, and check the fort's hours on the day, because sources differ.
#2
Jebel Hafeet
The mountain road climbs about 12 km of hairpins to a summit viewpoint with a hotel near the top, and the air is a few degrees cooler than in the town. There is no ticket for the road. Go for the last hour of daylight, bring a jacket in winter, and drive down slowly in the dark: this is the stop that needs your own car.
#3
Al Ain Zoo
The largest zoo in the Middle East by its own description, with free entry for under-3s. Opening is from 9 AM and closing varies by season, and the zoo itself advises 3-4 hours. It is the one stop that can take over the day, so choose it instead of the museums, not as well as them. The safari drive is sold separately, from about AED 210 for the truck option.
#4
Camels and the livestock market
Al Ain's camel and livestock market is a working market, not a show: traders and pens of camels and goats. Go in the morning, ask before photographing people and check it is open that day. If all you want is to sit on a camel, the camel ride on our desert safari is simpler and shaded in the evening.
Al Ain day trip from Dubai: the short answer
Al Ain is a good day trip if you leave early and pick three stops, not six. It is about 140 km from Dubai, 1.5-2 hours each way by car, so the day has 3.5-4 hours of driving built in. In return you get a free palm oasis, an old mud-brick fort, Jebel Hafeet (about 1,250 m) for sunset and a zoo that costs from about AED 32 for adults.
It suits travellers who have seen the Dubai towers and want something slower and greener, and families who want the zoo. It does not suit a first visit of three or four days: the same 12 hours buy more in Dubai, or on the Abu Dhabi city tour from $45, which includes hotel pickup. We do not run an Al Ain tour, so this guide is for people going on their own. For other days out of the city, see best day trips from Dubai.
Getting from Dubai to Al Ain
Al Ain is inland, on the border with Oman, in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. The usual road is the Dubai-Al Ain road (E66), fast and straight with speed cameras, so keep to the limit. Leave Dubai before 8 AM and leave Al Ain by about 7 PM so that you are back at a sensible hour.
| Way | Time from Dubai | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Rental car | 1.5-2 hours each way | The best option: sights are spread out and Jebel Hafeet needs a car. |
| Taxi or private driver | 1.5-2 hours each way | Several hundred dirhams each way. Agree one price for the whole day, with waiting time, before you start. |
| Intercity bus | Longer, with transfers | Check the current route and times in the RTA S'hail app. You will still need transport inside Al Ain. |
| Organised tour | A full day | Other operators sell Al Ain days; check what is included. We do not run one. |
Fares and routes change; confirm on the day.
Our advice: rent a car for the day if you are comfortable driving in the UAE (see renting a car in Dubai), or pay a driver one fixed price. Do not plan to hop between stops in local taxis, and do not count on finding a taxi at the foot of the mountain at dusk. The Dubai taxi and Careem guide explains how fares and apps work.
What to see in Al Ain, with costs and time
Al Ain is called the Garden City, and its sights are about heritage and nature rather than towers. The table lists the stops most visitors choose, with the time to allow. Entry fees and hours change, so treat the figures as a guide and check before you go.
| Stop | Cost | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Al Ain Oasis | Free | 1-2 hours | Shaded palm paths and old irrigation channels; open from about 9 AM |
| Al Jahili Fort | Free, check | About 1 hour | Restored fort of the 1890s; hours differ between sources |
| Al Ain Palace Museum | Check | About 1 hour | The former home of Sheikh Zayed, founder of the UAE |
| Al Ain Museum | Paid | 1-2 hours | One of the country's oldest museums, next to the palace museum |
| Hili Archaeological Park | Check | About 1 hour | Bronze Age tombs and gardens, part of the UNESCO listing |
| Camel market | Free | 30-60 minutes | Best in the morning |
| Al Ain Zoo | From about AED 32 | 3-4 hours | Children 3-12 about AED 10.50; under 3 free |
| Jebel Hafeet | Free road | 2-3 hours | Sunrise or sunset; own car needed |
Check prices and opening days on the official sites. Hours can change during Ramadan and public holidays.
Three stops is the right number. The oasis and the fort fit into one morning, one of the museums or the zoo takes the afternoon, and Jebel Hafeet closes the day. If you try to add the museums, Hili and the camel market as well, you will spend the day in the car park.
Jebel Hafeet: the drive up and when to go
Jebel Hafeet is the highest peak in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, at about 1,249 m, and it sits on the border with Oman. A public mountain road climbs about 12 km in tight hairpins to the viewpoints and a hotel near the top, and cyclists train on it, so drive slowly and watch the bends. There is no ticket for the road.
The best time is the last hour of daylight, when the town and the desert turn gold below you, and the sunrise suits early risers. The summit is a few degrees cooler than Al Ain and often windy, so bring a light jacket from November to March. At the foot is the Green Mubazzarah park, with lawns and hot-spring water, which is reported to need no entry ticket. Allow about 3 hours for the mountain and the park together, and do the drive down before it is fully dark if you do not know the road.
Al Ain Zoo: worth it or not
The zoo is open from 9 AM, with the closing time changing by season. Adults pay about AED 31.50, children aged 3-12 about AED 10.50, and under-3s and people of determination enter free. The zoo suggests 3-4 hours, which is why it is the stop that decides your day. A safari drive in the grounds is sold separately, from about AED 210 for the truck option.
Worth it if you have children or you love animals, and cheaper than most Dubai attractions. Skip it if you are short of time or travelling in July or August, when the middle of the day is too hot to enjoy outdoor enclosures. If you choose the zoo, choose it instead of the museums and keep the oasis for the morning.
Families should plan honestly: a 12-hour day with a 1.5-2 hour drive each way is long for children under about six.
A day plan from Dubai
This is a realistic day for the cooler months, October to April. In winter the sun sets around 5:30 PM, so move the afternoon one hour earlier.
| Time | Stop |
|---|---|
| 7:30 AM | Leave Dubai; allow 1.5-2 hours |
| 9:30 AM | Al Ain Oasis, a slow walk of 1-2 hours |
| 11:30 AM | Al Jahili Fort, about 1 hour |
| 12:30 PM | Lunch in the town |
| 2:00 PM | Al Ain Zoo or one museum |
| 4:30 PM | Drive up Jebel Hafeet for sunset |
| 6:30-7:00 PM | Leave Al Ain; back in Dubai about 9 PM |
In summer, do the oasis and fort early, rest indoors from noon, and go up the mountain only for sunset.
If you want to see Al Ain slowly, stay overnight. A hotel on or near Jebel Hafeet turns the day into a gentle two-day trip and removes the evening drive.
Best time, heat and what to wear
November to March is the season: mild days, clear air and comfortable walking. In July and August, Al Ain can pass 45 degrees, and the oasis, the fort and the zoo are all hard going between noon and 4 PM. Our guide to Dubai in summer has the same logic for the whole country.
Wear light clothes that cover the shoulders and knees: it is more comfortable in the sun, and it is the respectful choice at the forts and museums. Bring a hat, sunglasses, sun cream, closed shoes for the oasis paths and a bottle of water for each person. Hours change during Ramadan, so check before you go.
When Abu Dhabi or the desert is the better day
If you have one free day and want the most for the money, the Abu Dhabi city tour is simpler: from $45 per person, 9 hours, pickup at 8:00 AM from your hotel in Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque with registration help, the BAPS Mandir and Heritage Village, with no driving for you. You agree the date on WhatsApp and pay on the day. A private car for up to 7 guests is $245.
If the dunes are what you want, the full-day desert safari is from $45, 7 hours with 30-45 minutes of dune bashing, a camel ride, a BBQ dinner and shows. For the desert at first light, the sunrise balloon is from $275 and takes 4-5 hours, a 30% deposit confirms it, and it leaves the rest of the day free. Compare the two in desert safari vs hot air balloon.
Going the other way, how to get from Dubai to Abu Dhabi and the Abu Dhabi day trip guide cover the capital without a tour.
FAQ
How far is Al Ain from Dubai?
About 140 km, which is 1.5-2 hours each way by car depending on where you start in Dubai and the traffic. A day trip therefore includes 3.5-4 hours of driving, so plan three stops, not six.
Is Al Ain worth a day trip from Dubai?
Yes, if you want an oasis, an old fort and a mountain sunset, or you are travelling with children and want the zoo. If you only have three or four days in the UAE, an Abu Dhabi day with the Grand Mosque is usually the better use of 12 hours.
How much does an Al Ain day trip cost?
The oasis and the road up Jebel Hafeet are free, and the fort is reported free. The zoo is about AED 31.50 for adults and AED 10.50 for children aged 3-12. Your main costs are the car or driver and fuel. Check prices on the official sites, as they change.
Can I visit Al Ain without a car?
It is hard. Intercity buses link Dubai and Al Ain, but the sights are spread out and Jebel Hafeet needs your own transport. A rental car or a driver at a fixed price for the day is far easier. We do not run an Al Ain tour.
When is the best time to go to Al Ain?
November to March, when daytime temperatures are comfortable. In July and August it can pass 45 degrees, so do the oasis early and go up Jebel Hafeet only for sunset.
Can I combine Al Ain and Abu Dhabi in one day?
Not sensibly. Al Ain is about 140 km from Dubai and a similar distance from Abu Dhabi city, so the two together are a day of 6 hours or more on the road. Choose one for the day, or stay overnight in Al Ain.
Is there an entry fee for Jebel Hafeet?
No ticket is needed for the mountain road, and the Green Mubazzarah park at its foot is reported to need none either. The road is about 12 km of hairpins, so drive carefully, especially after dark.
