Ajman is a half-day trip from Dubai: 30-50 km, 40-75 minutes by car, to the smallest emirate in the UAE. The anchor is Ajman Museum in the old fort, about AED 5, followed by a free corniche and beach, the dhow-building yards and, for birdwatchers, the Al Zorah mangroves. Allow 4-6 hours. This guide covers getting there, the stops with costs, what to wear, how to pair Ajman with Sharjah, and why staying there is cheaper but pickup tours still reach you.

How far is Ajman from Dubai and how long does it take?

Five good pairings for an Ajman day
#1
Add Sharjah's old fort
Ajman sits right beside Sharjah, so the old fort and heritage quarter at the Heart of Sharjah make an easy second stop on the way back to Dubai. Together they give you two forts, two museums and two corniches in one day. Check opening days for each, and see our Sharjah day trip guide for the plan.
#2
Al Noor Island in Sharjah
A small island park in Sharjah's Khalid Lagoon, reached by a curved footbridge, with a butterfly house and shaded walks. It suits a quiet end to the afternoon, and it pairs with Ajman better than with Dubai because the drive is short. Ticket prices and opening times change, so check before you go.
#3
A desert safari with Ajman pickup
Our full-day desert safari picks up from hotels in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman in an air-conditioned 4x4. You get 30-45 minutes of dune bashing on the Red Dunes, sandboarding, a camel ride, a BBQ dinner and shows. You pay on the day, with no prepayment.
#4
The Abu Dhabi tour with Ajman pickup
Our Abu Dhabi city tour starts with an 8:00 AM hotel pickup in Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman, and the shared price covers the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the BAPS Mandir and Heritage Village. Pickup is earlier from Sharjah and remote areas, so confirm your time with us on WhatsApp before the day.
#5
Old Dubai on foot
If the fort museum made you curious about the older UAE, the Old Dubai walk covers Al Fahidi, the abra across the Creek, the Spice Souk and the Gold Souk with a local guide. It starts near Sharaf DG metro, which is a day of its own rather than an add-on, and Ajman has no metro.
Ajman day trip from Dubai: the short answer
Ajman is a half-day trip: 30-50 km from Dubai, 40-75 minutes by car. It is the smallest emirate in the UAE, and the visit has a clear shape: Ajman Museum in the old fort (about AED 5, open 8 AM-8 PM, Fridays from about 2:30 PM), then the free corniche and beach, the dhow-building yards by the creek and, if you like birds, the Al Zorah mangroves. Allow 4-6 hours.
Be honest about what it is. Ajman is quieter, cheaper and slower than Dubai, and that is the attraction, not a flaw. It will not replace the towers, the desert or the sea, so on a first visit of three or four days we would give it a half day at most, or none. It is a good fit if you have time, like small museums and calm beaches, or if you are staying in Ajman and wondering what to do. For other options near the city, see best day trips from Dubai.
Getting from Dubai to Ajman
Ajman lies next to Sharjah, and the drive from Dubai runs through it. Take the coastal road or the E311 (Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road). The commuter flow runs into Dubai in the morning and out in the evening, so a day trip from Dubai mostly travels against it; still, check the live traffic on your phone before you set off.
| Way | Time | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Rental car or driver | 40-75 minutes | The simplest way, with parking at the museum and on the corniche |
| Taxi or ride-hailing | 40-75 minutes | Crossing the emirate border costs more, so ask for the price first and agree a return |
| Intercity bus | About 1-1.5 hours | RTA buses run from Dubai stations; check the route and times in the S'hail app |
| Metro | Not available | The Dubai Metro does not reach Ajman, so you finish with a bus or taxi |
Times depend on where you start in Dubai and on traffic; confirm routes and fares before you go.
Most visitors find a ride-hailing app or a fixed-price driver the easiest option. Our Dubai taxi and Careem guide explains how fares and apps work, and how to get from Dubai to Sharjah covers the same corridor, since Ajman is just beyond it.
What to see in Ajman, with costs and time
Ajman's sights are small and close together, which is why it works as half a day. Costs and hours change, so treat the figures as a guide.
| Stop | Cost | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ajman Museum | About AED 5; check | 1-2 hours | An old fort that was the ruling family's home; wind towers, carved doors and coral-stone walls; 8 AM-8 PM, Fridays from about 2:30 PM |
| Ajman Corniche and beach | Free | 1-3 hours | A long promenade and sandy beach; best in the late afternoon |
| Dhow-building yards | Free to look | 30-45 minutes | Wooden boats built by hand by the creek; hours vary, mornings are best |
| Fish market and harbour | Free | 30 minutes | Early morning is the busy time |
| Al Zorah Nature Reserve | Varies by activity | 1-2 hours | Mangroves and birdlife; kayak and boat trips are sold separately |
Free-entry offers at the museum have been reported, so check before you pay.
The museum is the one stop worth planning around. It is a small, well-kept fort with rooms on local history, traditional life and archaeology, and a courtyard that gives a sense of how the town looked before the towers. Most visitors spend about an hour, more if they like history.
The corniche and the beach
Ajman's corniche is a wide promenade beside a sandy beach with a view of the Gulf, and it is much calmer than JBR. It is a place to walk, sit with a coffee and watch the sunset rather than to find a beach club. Swimming is fine in the cooler months and pleasant in summer, but the sand is hot and shade is thin, so go from about 4 PM.
Ajman is more conservative than Dubai. Wear swimwear on the beach, cover up when you walk along the promenade and into shops and cafes, and do not count on finding alcohol in the evening. Read the signs for any women-only or family areas. Our beach rules and safety guide covers what to expect on UAE beaches.
A half day and a full day
A half day is the right length. If you want a full day, add Sharjah rather than stretching Ajman.
| Time | Half day | Full day |
|---|---|---|
| 9:00 AM | Leave Dubai | Leave Dubai |
| 10:00 AM | Ajman Museum | Ajman Museum |
| 11:30 AM | Dhow yards and harbour | Dhow yards and harbour |
| 1:00 PM | Lunch near the corniche | Lunch near the corniche |
| 2:30 PM | Corniche and beach | Drive to Sharjah: fort or Al Noor Island |
| 5:00 PM | Sunset, then home | Sharjah corniche at sunset |
| 7:00 PM | Back in Dubai about 8 PM | Back in Dubai about 8:30 PM |
In summer, do the museum first and spend the 1-4 PM heat indoors.
In July and August, the sensible plan is the reverse of the beach: museum and dhow yards in the morning, lunch indoors, and the waterfront only after about 5 PM.
Staying in Ajman and still seeing Dubai
Hotels in Ajman are often cheaper than comparable rooms in Dubai, and the beach is on your doorstep. The trade-off is distance: Dubai's main sights are 40-75 minutes away, and the metro does not reach you. Our Dubai budget guide helps weigh that.
The good news is that our two longest day tours pick up in Ajman. The full-day desert safari is from $45 per person for 7 hours, with hotel pickup in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman, a 30-45 minute dune bashing session, sandboarding, a camel ride, a BBQ buffet and shows; the quad bike upgrade is $65. The Abu Dhabi city tour is from $45 for 9 hours, with an 8:00 AM pickup from Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman. For both, you agree the date on WhatsApp and pay on the day. Our desert safari from Sharjah and Ajman guide has the pickup details.
Who should go, and who should skip it
Go if you like quiet places, small museums and traditional boats, if you are travelling with older children who enjoy a fort to explore, or if you have already done the big Dubai sights and want a slower day. Go if you are staying in Ajman and want a walk by the sea.
Skip it if you have only two or three days in the UAE, if you want shopping, nightlife or big attractions, or if you are visiting in the summer midday heat with young children. The corniche has little shade, and there is far more to do in Dubai's air-conditioned malls and on the water. A meal in a local restaurant costs less than in a Dubai mall, which is a small bonus, but it will not change the plan.
If you cannot decide between Ajman and something bigger, the Abu Dhabi tour is the stronger first-visit day, and the safari is the stronger evening. Ajman is the calm option for the day after.
Best time and what to bring
October to April is the best season, with the most comfortable days from November to March, mostly 22-30 degrees and a sea breeze on the corniche. From June to September it is hot and humid, and the best hours are early morning and after sunset.
Bring a hat, sunglasses, sun cream, comfortable shoes and a light cover-up for the museum, plus a towel if you plan to swim. Carry an ID and a bottle of water per person. Hours change during Ramadan and on public holidays.
FAQ
How far is Ajman from Dubai and how long does it take?
About 30-50 km depending on where you start, which is 40-75 minutes by car in normal traffic. The Dubai Metro does not reach Ajman, so you travel by car, taxi or bus.
Is Ajman worth a day trip from Dubai?
As a half day, yes, if you like small museums, a quiet beach and traditional boats. If you only have three or four days in the UAE, the desert, Abu Dhabi or Old Dubai will give you more. Ajman is better as a calm add-on than as a main trip.
How much does Ajman Museum cost?
About AED 5 for adults in most listings, with cheaper family and school rates. Free-entry offers have been reported, and hours are 8 AM-8 PM with Fridays from about 2:30 PM, so check before you go.
Can I swim at Ajman Beach?
Yes, on the public beach, with swimwear on the sand and modest clothes on the promenade. Ajman is more conservative than Dubai, so follow the posted signs and keep behaviour calm.
Do your tours pick up in Ajman?
Yes. The full-day desert safari picks up in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman, and the Abu Dhabi city tour starts with an 8:00 AM pickup from the same three areas. Both are from $45 per person, with no prepayment. We do not run a sightseeing tour of Ajman itself.
What is the best time of day for Ajman?
Museum and dhow yards in the morning, beach from about 4 PM. The corniche is at its best in the last hour of daylight, when the heat has dropped and the promenade fills up.
Can I combine Ajman and Sharjah in one day?
Yes. They are neighbours, and a drive from Ajman to the Heart of Sharjah or Al Noor Island takes about 15-25 minutes. Start in Ajman, finish in Sharjah, and be back in Dubai by about 8:30 PM.
