Desert Safari from Sharjah and Ajman: Pickup Times, Price and Return

Our full-day desert safari collects you at Sharjah and Ajman hotels for the same $45: earlier pickup, the ride to the Lahbab dunes, sunset, dinner at Al Khayma, late return.

From $45 per person, no Sharjah or Ajman surcharge7 hours from a Dubai hotel; allow more from AjmanLahbab Red Dunes 45-60 km east of Dubai
Full-Day Desert Safari in Dubai — From $45 per person

Yes: the full-day desert safari picks up at hotels and apartments in Sharjah and Ajman, and the price is the same $45 per person as from Dubai ($65 with the 30-minute quad bike). What changes is the clock. You are first into the 4x4, so your pickup is earlier than a Dubai guest's; the ride to the Lahbab Red Dunes is longer than the 45-60 minutes from central Dubai; and you are the last drop-off late in the evening. This guide covers the pickup windows, the road, what the 7 hours include, the return time and which of our other tours also collect in Sharjah and Ajman.

Tour on this route: Full-Day Desert Safari in Dubai — From $45 per person, 7 hours.

Does the Dubai desert safari pick up from Sharjah and Ajman?

Yes. The full-day desert safari collects guests at hotels and apartments in Sharjah and Ajman as well as Dubai, in an air-conditioned 4x4, for the same $45 per person ($65 with the 30-minute quad bike). There is no pickup surcharge and no prepayment: you confirm the date on WhatsApp and pay on the day. Your pickup is earlier than a Dubai guest's because you are collected first.

This guide also answers:

  • What time is the desert safari pickup from Sharjah?
  • How long is the drive from Ajman to the desert safari?
  • What time will I be back at my hotel in Sharjah or Ajman?

The day from Sharjah and Ajman, stage by stage

Pickup in Sharjah #1
Al Majaz, the lagoon and the city hotels Earlier pickup, same $45, no surcharge

Pickup in Sharjah

The air-conditioned 4x4 comes to your hotel or apartment door anywhere in Sharjah city. Because Sharjah guests are collected before any Dubai pickups, expect a window earlier in the afternoon than a Dubai hotel gets; the exact time arrives with your WhatsApp confirmation. Nothing else changes: the price, the programme and the camp are the same.

Pickup in Ajman #2
Ajman hotels and apartments, about 35-40 km from Dubai First on the route, longest ride, same programme

Pickup in Ajman

Ajman is the furthest point on the route, so you board first and have the most road time before the dunes. Budget roughly an hour and a half in the 4x4 before the dune bashing starts, against 45-60 minutes from central Dubai. Eat lightly beforehand: the longer ride and a full stomach are the one combination that spoils the first dune.

Lahbab Red Dunes #3
45-60 km east of Dubai on the E44 30-45 minutes of dune bashing, sandboarding, camel ride

Lahbab Red Dunes

The same session whichever emirate you started in: 30-45 minutes of dune bashing with the driver adjusting the intensity to the group, sandboarding on the Big Red slopes, the optional 30-minute quad bike ride ($65 in total), then a camel ride and falcon photos as the light turns gold and the sunset watched from the top of a dune.

Al Khayma camp and the late return #4
Dinner and shows, then the drive north Late-evening drop-off on empty roads

Al Khayma camp and the late return

BBQ buffet with vegetarian and gluten-free dishes, unlimited water, soft drinks, tea and Arabic coffee, henna, the shisha station and the fire show, Tanoura and belly dance in air-conditioned tents. Then the drive back: if your 4x4 is shared with Dubai guests they are dropped first, Sharjah next and Ajman last, well after the evening rush hour has cleared.

Does the safari pick up in Sharjah and Ajman? Yes, for the same $45

Yes. The full-day desert safari collects guests at hotels and apartments in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman in an air-conditioned 4x4, and the price does not move with the emirate: $45 per person for the standard programme, $65 with the 30-minute quad bike ride. There is no pickup surcharge, no meeting point to reach in Dubai and no prepayment — you agree the date on WhatsApp and pay on the day.

What changes is the clock. The Lahbab Red Dunes lie about 45-60 km east of Dubai, 45-60 minutes from most Dubai hotels, and a shared 4x4 collects its furthest guests first. From Sharjah, and more so from Ajman, your pickup comes earlier than a Dubai guest's, the ride out is longer, and you are among the last to be dropped at night. None of it shortens the day on the sand: the 30-45 minute dune bashing session, sandboarding, the camel ride, sunset on the dunes and the full evening at Al Khayma camp are the same programme for everyone in the vehicle.

This guide covers how the pickup window is set, what the road looks like from each emirate, when to expect to be back, and which of our other tours also come north of Dubai. Short version: the Abu Dhabi day does; the balloon and the yachts do not.

Pickup times from Sharjah and Ajman: earlier, and confirmed on WhatsApp

A shared 4x4 works like a school run in reverse: it starts at the point furthest from the desert and fills up on the way. Our Abu Dhabi tour writes this into its schedule — 8:00 AM in Dubai, earlier from Sharjah and remote areas — and the same logic runs the safari. Ajman guests board first, Sharjah guests next, then any Dubai pickups, and only then does the vehicle turn east onto the desert roads.

We do not print a single Sharjah or Ajman pickup time because two things move it. The first is sunset, which the whole afternoon is built around: about 5:30 PM in December and about 7:10 PM in June, so winter days start earlier than summer ones. The second is where the other guests in your 4x4 are staying. What we do is confirm your exact time on WhatsApp with the booking; count on it being earlier in the afternoon than a Dubai hotel's window, and be in the lobby, or at the building entrance if you are in an apartment, a few minutes before it.

To make that confirmation quick, send us:

  • The hotel name, or for an apartment the building name and the area, with a landmark if the building is hard to find.
  • The number of guests and the ages of any children: children over 5 usually enjoy the safari most, anyone under 12 rides the camel with an adult, and dune bashing is not recommended for infants under 3.
  • Whether you want the 30-minute quad bike ride ($65 per person in total) so the slot is held.
  • Dietary needs: the BBQ buffet has vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes, but it helps to know in advance.
  • A phone number that works in the UAE, so the driver can call from the car.

The road: Sharjah and Ajman to the Lahbab dunes

The dunes are east of Dubai on the E44 Dubai-Hatta road. Distances on paper are modest — Dubai to Sharjah city is about 15-25 km, Dubai to Ajman about 35-40 km, then 45-60 km from the city to the sand — but the Dubai-Sharjah corridor has the worst rush hours in the country: 7-9 AM into Dubai and 5-8 PM out, when the crossing alone can take an hour. The driver chooses the route on the day and usually skirts the city centre.

The safari's timetable happens to dodge both peaks. An afternoon pickup leaves Sharjah and Ajman before the 5-8 PM outbound crush, and the return from the camp is late in the evening when the same roads are empty. What you should budget is simply time in the car: roughly an hour to an hour and a half before the dune bashing from a Sharjah hotel, a little more from Ajman, against 45-60 minutes from central Dubai.

Starting pointDistance to DubaiTime to the dunes (budget)What it means
Central Dubai (Downtown, Marina, Jumeirah)—45-60 minThe baseline the 7-hour programme is built on
Sharjah cityAbout 15-25 kmAbout 60-90 minCollected before Dubai guests; earlier afternoon pickup
AjmanAbout 35-40 kmAbout 90 minFirst on the route out, last drop-off at night

Figures for the shared 4x4 with other pickups on the way; traffic and the number of stops decide the rest.

One rule for the road matters more from Sharjah and Ajman than from Dubai, because the ride is longer: skip the heavy lunch. A full stomach 2-3 hours before pickup is the most common reason a guest feels queasy when the 4x4 leaves the tarmac. Eat light, drink water, and if you know you get carsick, take a tablet 30 minutes before pickup and ask for the front seat. For the pickup zones in general and why we do not recommend driving yourself onto the sand, see how to get to the desert safari.

What the 7 hours include, whichever emirate you start in

The longer ride buys exactly the same programme. The full-day format exists so nothing is rushed: the extended dune bashing, sandboarding and the camel ride happen in the bright afternoon light, sunset is watched from the top of a dune rather than from a car park, and the evening at Al Khayma runs its full course before the drive home. For $45 per person you get:

  • Door-to-door transfers in an air-conditioned 4x4 from your hotel or apartment in Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman, with a licensed English-speaking driver-guide.
  • 30-45 minutes of dune bashing on the Big Red dunes, with the driver adjusting the intensity to the group — ask for gentler or wilder.
  • Sandboarding, a camel ride and falcon photos as the light turns gold, then sunset from the dunes.
  • Unlimited chilled water, soft drinks, tea and Arabic coffee.
  • The BBQ buffet at Al Khayma camp with meat and vegetarian dishes, plus vegan and gluten-free options.
  • Henna, the shisha station, and the fire show, Tanoura and belly dance, all in air-conditioned tents.

The extras are optional: the 30-minute quad bike ride brings the total to $65 per person and needs no driving licence (under-16s ride accompanied by an adult), and a VIP buggy option is $240 per person. Our desert safari price comparison sets the three tiers side by side. For clothing — sandals or closed shoes you do not mind filling with sand, and a light jacket for the camp between December and February — see what to wear on a desert safari.

The return: when you are back in Sharjah or Ajman

The evening programme starts after sunset, so the whole day, return included, moves with the calendar. Dinner, the shows and the last round of shisha follow the sunset — about 5:30 PM in December, about 7:10 PM in June — and only then does the 4x4 leave the camp. In winter you are home earlier; in summer, later.

From a Dubai hotel the programme is about 7 hours door to door. From Sharjah and Ajman add the road time at both ends, and if your 4x4 is shared with Dubai guests, expect to be dropped after them. Plan for a late-evening arrival at your hotel. The roads north are quiet at that hour: the 5-8 PM rush out of Dubai is long over.

The practical consequences: do not book a restaurant in Sharjah for the same evening, do not take the safari on the night before an early flight, and if you are travelling with small children, remember that the camel ride needs an adult with anyone under 12 and the dune bashing is not recommended for infants under 3. Sharjah being a dry emirate changes nothing about the day: the drinks included at the camp are water, soft drinks, tea and Arabic coffee, and the camp itself is in the Lahbab desert on the Dubai side.

Booking from Sharjah or Ajman: WhatsApp, no prepayment, free cancellation up to 24 hours

Booking works the same from every emirate. Send the date, the number of guests, your hotel or building and whether you want the quad bike; we reply on WhatsApp with the confirmation and your pickup time. Nothing is paid in advance — you pay on the day of the tour — and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before your scheduled pickup, so a change of plan costs nothing.

Two details matter more outside Dubai. First, give us a phone number that rings in the UAE: apartment buildings and beach hotels along the Sharjah and Ajman coast are harder to find than a Dubai hotel lobby, and the driver will call from the car. Second, if your group is split between emirates — friends in Ajman, family in Dubai Marina — say so when you book and we will tell you whether one 4x4 can collect everyone or whether you meet on the dunes.

If you are weighing the safari against doing the desert on your own from Sharjah: there is no useful public transport to the Lahbab dunes, a taxi will not wait at a camp for 4 hours, and a rental car on soft sand without training is how holidays end with a recovery truck. A licensed operator, a driver who reads these dunes every day and a modern 4x4 with safety gear are what the $45 buys before the fun starts.

Our other tours from Sharjah and Ajman: which include pickup

Staying north of Dubai does not shut you out of the rest of the programme, but not every tour comes to your door. The table shows what includes pickup and what needs a trip into Dubai.

TourPickup in Sharjah or AjmanPriceWhat to know
Full-day desert safariYes, includedFrom $45; $65 with the quad bikeEarlier afternoon pickup, late-evening return, no prepayment
Abu Dhabi city tourYes, includedFrom $45 shared; $245 private car for up to 78:00 AM pickup in Dubai and earlier from Sharjah; 9-hour day; no prepayment

Yacht party, 21+No pickup$99Boarding 8:30 PM at the same pier; the yacht leaves at 9:00 PM sharp

For the Abu Dhabi city tour the earlier Sharjah pickup is the price of skipping the 140 km drive on your own; Abu Dhabi in one day from Dubai walks through the 9 hours stop by stop.

For the water, you come to the Marina. The shared yacht tour runs hourly from $32 and the yacht party sails at 9 PM for $99; both are paid in advance because the slots sell out, and both need an original passport or Emirates ID at the pier. A taxi from Sharjah to Dubai Marina is a long ride: the general Dubai-Sharjah fare is about AED 40-80 plus a small inter-emirate surcharge, and the Marina sits at the far end of the city, so budget more and allow well over an hour. The cheaper route is an E303, E306 or E307 bus to Union, Al Ghubaiba or Deira City Centre for about AED 10 and then the Metro Red Line to DMCC (change from the Green Line if you arrive at Al Ghubaiba); check the RTA app for times before you go. How to get from Dubai to Sharjah covers the corridor in both directions and how to get to the yacht pier the last kilometre. If you would rather have a boat to your own group, private charters start from AED 400 per hour with captain, crew, fuel, water and ice included.

A Sharjah morning before the safari

Because the pickup is in the afternoon, the morning is yours, and Sharjah's sights are compact enough to fill it without wearing you out before the dunes. The Blue Souk (Central Souq) and the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization are both by the water; Al Noor Island and the Rain Room are the two stops people photograph most; Al Majaz Waterfront is where to sit with a coffee afterwards and watch the lagoon.

Keep lunch light and early — the 2-3 hour gap before pickup is the rule — and be back at the hotel in time to change into sandals, a hat and sunglasses and put sunscreen on before the 4x4 arrives. In winter, pack the light jacket for the camp: the desert cools fast once the sun is down. From Ajman the same plan works with an earlier lunch, because your 4x4 is the first to leave.

FAQ

Does the Dubai desert safari pick up from Sharjah and Ajman?

Yes. The full-day desert safari collects guests at hotels and apartments in Sharjah and Ajman as well as Dubai, in an air-conditioned 4x4, for the same $45 per person ($65 with the 30-minute quad bike). There is no pickup surcharge and no prepayment: you confirm the date on WhatsApp and pay on the day. Your pickup is earlier than a Dubai guest's because you are collected first.

What time is the desert safari pickup from Sharjah?

Earlier than the Dubai window, because Sharjah guests are collected before the 4x4 heads for Dubai and the desert. The exact time depends on the season's sunset — about 5:30 PM in December, about 7:10 PM in June — and on the other pickups in your vehicle, so we confirm it on WhatsApp with your booking. Be ready in the lobby a few minutes early.

How long is the drive from Ajman to the desert safari?

Budget about an hour and a half in the 4x4 before the dune bashing starts, against 45-60 minutes from central Dubai. Ajman is about 35-40 km from Dubai and the Lahbab Red Dunes are a further 45-60 km east of the city on the E44; the driver usually skirts the centre. The afternoon departure avoids the 5-8 PM rush hour out of Dubai.

What time will I be back at my hotel in Sharjah or Ajman?

Late evening. The camp programme — dinner, the fire show, Tanoura and belly dance — starts after sunset, so the return moves with the season: earlier in winter, when the sun sets around 5:30 PM, later in summer. From Sharjah and Ajman add the road time on top of the 7-hour Dubai programme, and expect to be dropped after any Dubai guests in your 4x4. Do not plan a dinner reservation or an early flight the same night.

Is there an extra charge for safari pickup outside Dubai?

No. The full-day safari is $45 per person from Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman alike, and $65 with the quad bike ride; the VIP buggy option is $240 per person. Nothing is added for the longer transfer. The only cost of the distance is time: an earlier pickup, more road before the dunes and a later drop-off at night.

Do I have to pay in advance for the safari from Sharjah?

No. There is no prepayment on the desert safari from any emirate: you agree the date and pickup point on WhatsApp and pay on the day of the tour. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before your scheduled pickup time. If you want the quad bike ride, say so when you book so the slot is held.

Which other Dubai tours pick up in Sharjah and Ajman?

The Abu Dhabi city tour does: 8:00 AM pickup in Dubai and earlier from Sharjah, $45 shared or $245 for a private car for up to 7, with no prepayment. The sunrise balloon includes pickup within Dubai city only, so ask us on WhatsApp first. The shared yacht tour ($32) and the yacht party ($99) have no pickup; both leave from the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower in Dubai Marina.
