How to Get to the Dubai Desert Safari: Pickup Zones, Times and the Drive

The desert safari starts at your hotel: pickup in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman in an air-conditioned 4x4, 45-60 minutes to the Lahbab dunes, no prepayment. Why not to self-drive.

Full-Day Desert Safari in Dubai — From $45 per person

You do not get to the Dubai desert safari — it comes to you. The full-day desert safari includes hotel pickup and drop-off in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman in an air-conditioned 4x4 with a licensed English-speaking driver-guide. The 4x4 collects you at your hotel or apartment in the afternoon, drives 45-60 minutes east on the E44 to the Lahbab Red Dunes, does the dune bashing, waits through the camp evening and brings you back to the same door about 7 hours later. No meeting point, no car park, no prepayment. Here is how pickup zones and timings work, and why a taxi or hire car is the wrong tool.

How do I get to the desert safari in Dubai?

You do not need to — pickup is included. The full-day desert safari, from $45 per person, collects you at your hotel or apartment in Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman in an air-conditioned 4x4 in the afternoon, drives 45-60 minutes east on the E44 to the Lahbab Red Dunes, and returns you to the same door about 7 hours later. You confirm the date and pickup time on WhatsApp; there is no prepayment.

The ways to reach the dunes, ranked

Hotel pickup in our 4x4 #1
Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman — included in the $45 Everyone: door to dune to door

Hotel pickup in our 4x4

The only option that actually works. An air-conditioned 4x4 with a licensed driver-guide collects you at your hotel or apartment in the afternoon, drives the 45-60 minutes to Lahbab, does the 30-45 minutes of dune bashing, waits through the camp evening and drops you at the same door about 7 hours later. Nothing to find, nothing to park, nothing to pay in advance.

Taxi or Careem #2
One way only, roughly AED 100-150 Nobody, unless you have arranged your own ride back

Taxi or Careem

A taxi will take you to the Lahbab roadside at about AED 2 per km — roughly AED 100-150 one way before waiting time — and leave you on the tarmac with no way onto the dunes, no camp to walk into and no taxi rank for the ride home at 10 PM. As a way to reach a safari it solves nothing that the included pickup does not already solve.

Hire car on the E44 #3
45-60 km east, then you stop at the sand A Hatta day trip, not the dunes

Hire car on the E44

The drive is easy and Big Red is visible from the highway, but that is where a hire car's usefulness ends. Most rental contracts exclude off-road driving, a saloon cannot climb a dune, and a beginner in a rented 4x4 gets stuck on the first soft crest. Keep the hire car for Hatta, 130 km along the same road; leave the sand to a licensed driver.

From Sharjah and Ajman #4
Earlier pickup, same $45 Guests staying north of Dubai

From Sharjah and Ajman

We collect in Sharjah and Ajman at the same price. You are furthest from the dunes, so you are first on the route and your pickup is earlier than a Dubai hotel's; the return is later for the same reason. Sharjah city is 15-25 km from Dubai and Ajman 35-40 km, and an afternoon start keeps you clear of most of the 5-8 PM rush out of Dubai.

The answer: the safari starts at your hotel

Pickup is included, so there is no route to plan. The full-day desert safari collects you at your hotel or apartment in Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman in an air-conditioned 4x4 with a licensed English-speaking driver-guide, drives 45-60 minutes east on the E44 to the Lahbab Red Dunes, does the dune bashing, sandboarding and the camel ride at sunset, waits through dinner and the shows at Al Khayma camp, and brings you back to the same door about 7 hours after it collected you. The price is from $45 per person, $65 with the 30-minute quad bike, and there is no prepayment — you agree the date on WhatsApp and pay on the day.

That is the whole route guide in one paragraph. The rest of this article is the detail people ask about: which areas we collect from and how the timing works by area, the step-by-step from booking to the 4x4 at your door, what the drive looks like, how Sharjah and Ajman pickups differ, and why the alternatives — a taxi, a hire car — are the wrong tools for this particular trip.

Pickup zones and timings by area

Lahbab is east of the city, so the drive time depends on where you sleep. Deira, Bur Dubai and the Creek are at the near end of the 45-60 minutes; the Marina, JBR and the Palm at the far end, and a little longer if the afternoon traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road is heavy. Pickup is in the afternoon and moves with the sunset — earlier in winter, when the sun sets at about 5:30 PM, later in summer, when it sets at about 7:10 PM — and we confirm the exact time for your hotel and date on WhatsApp when you book.

Where you stayPickupDrive to the dunesNotes
Deira, Bur Dubai, the CreekIncludedNear end of 45-60 minClosest to the E44 and the quickest way out of town
Downtown, Business Bay, DIFCIncluded45-60 minCentral; the driver picks the fastest route east
Jumeirah, Al BarshaIncluded45-60 minCoastal and mid-city; the driver heads inland from there
Dubai Marina, JBR, Palm JumeirahIncludedFar end of 45-60 min, more in trafficThe western end of the city, furthest from the dunes
SharjahIncluded, earlier pickupLongerSame $45; first on the route, so an earlier start and a later return
AjmanIncluded, earlier pickupLonger35-40 km north of Dubai; same $45, earliest pickup of all

The 5-8 PM rush hour on Sheikh Zayed Road can add 15-30 minutes to a drive that falls into it; the return after the camp is on empty roads.

Apartments and holiday rentals count as hotels for pickup: give us the building name and the tower so the driver can find the entrance, and be at the lobby or gate at the confirmed time. Guests in Sharjah and Ajman are collected first because they are furthest from the dunes, which is why their pickup is earlier; our safari from Sharjah and Ajman guide has those timings in detail.

Step by step: from WhatsApp to the 4x4 at your door

There are no tickets, vouchers or counters. This is the whole sequence:

  • 1. Message us on WhatsApp with your date, the name of your hotel or building, the number of guests and whether you want the standard safari ($45) or the version with the 30-minute quad bike ($65).
  • 2. We confirm the date and your pickup time on WhatsApp. No prepayment: you pay on the day of the tour, and you can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before the scheduled pickup.
  • 3. Eat lightly. Skip the heavy meal in the 2-3 hours before pickup; dune bashing and a full stomach do not mix. If you get carsick, take a tablet 30 minutes before pickup.
  • 4. Be in the lobby at the confirmed time with sunglasses, a hat, high-SPF sunscreen, comfortable shoes or sandals and, from December to February, a light jacket for the evening at the camp.
  • 5. The 4x4 arrives, air-conditioned, with your licensed English-speaking driver-guide. The $45 safari is a shared 4x4, so other guests may already be on board or collected after you.
  • 6. The drive east, 45-60 minutes on the E44, then a stop at the edge of the sand where the driver lowers the tyre pressure before the dunes.
  • 7. The evening: 30-45 minutes of dune bashing, sandboarding, the optional quad, the camel ride and falcon photos at sunset, dinner and the shows in Al Khayma's air-conditioned tents, and the drive back to your door about 7 hours after pickup.

The drive: 45-60 minutes east on the E44

The route out of Dubai is unremarkable for the first twenty minutes — flyovers and the last suburbs — and then the buildings thin out and the sand starts, pale at first and redder with every kilometre. The E44 is the Dubai-Hatta road; Lahbab is roughly 45-60 km along it, and Big Red, the tallest dune in the belt, stands right beside the highway. The Lahbab Red Dunes guide explains why the sand changes colour and what each activity there is like.

Timing works in your favour. An afternoon pickup usually has you out of the city before the 5-8 PM rush hour on Sheikh Zayed Road, and the return after the camp programme is on empty roads, when the drive back is at the short end of the range. If a pickup does fall into heavy traffic, the driver knows the alternatives, and the dunes do not run on a timetable — the sunset is the only fixed appointment, and the day is planned around it.

Use the drive. The driver-guide does this road most days: ask about the Hatta road beyond Lahbab, what the desert looks like in the other seasons and where the sand gets its colour. Unlimited chilled water is included on the tour; even so, in summer, start the afternoon hydrated rather than thirsty.

Why not to drive yourself or take a taxi

A common question is whether you can skip the pickup and get there yourself. The short answer is that pickup is included in the $45, so there is nothing to save. The long answer:

  • A hire car cannot go on the dunes. A saloon stays on the tarmac at Big Red, and most rental agreements exclude off-road driving — check yours before you even consider it. Dune driving in a 4x4 is a skill: tyre pressure, momentum, reading the slip face. A first-timer gets stuck on the first soft crest, and recovery in the desert is not a quick phone call.
  • A taxi is one way. At the metered rate of about AED 2 per km, a one-way ride to the Lahbab area is roughly AED 100-150 before waiting time, and there is no taxi rank in the desert for the ride back at 10 PM. Careem and Hala work in the city; they are not a plan for a dune. Our taxi and Careem guide covers where they do make sense.
  • The camp is part of the safari. The evening programme — dinner, the shows, the air-conditioned tents at Al Khayma — is booked as part of the tour, not a venue you turn up at. Without the tour there is no dinner to drive to.
  • Safety. The desert is the one place in the UAE where the standard advice is simple: only with a licensed operator. That is what the licensed driver-guide and the modern 4x4 with safety gear are for, and it is why dune bashing is not recommended for pregnant women, people with back or heart problems, or infants under 3.
  • The drive home. After 7 hours of dune bashing, sun and a big dinner, nobody wants to drive 60 km back in the dark. That is the part of the pickup people appreciate most.

From Sharjah and Ajman

We collect in Sharjah and Ajman at the same $45, and the only difference is the clock: you are furthest from the dunes, so you are first on the route and your pickup is earlier than a Dubai hotel's. Sharjah city is 15-25 km from Dubai and Ajman 35-40 km, and the Dubai-Sharjah corridor has its own rush hour — 7-9 AM into Dubai and 5-8 PM out — which an afternoon start mostly sidesteps.

The return is later for the same reason, so a Sharjah or Ajman safari is a late night; plan the next morning accordingly. Both emirates are also useful to know for the reverse trip: the Dubai to Sharjah guide covers the buses, taxis and what to see there, and the Abu Dhabi city tour collects in Sharjah and Ajman too, from 8:00 AM, with the same no-prepayment rule.

Our other tours: who collects you and who does not

The door-to-door model is the same on the Abu Dhabi city tour — 8:00 AM pickup in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman, earlier from Sharjah and remote areas — and on the sunrise hot air balloon, which collects you before dawn anywhere in Dubai city. The two yacht products are the exception: the Dubai Marina yacht party and the 1-hour shared yacht tour have no pickup and meet at the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower in Dubai Marina, a taxi drop-off or a metro ride to DMCC station; the yacht pier route guide has the details.

If you are still choosing where to stay, the pickup logistics are a small argument for the centre of the city — Downtown, Business Bay, Jumeirah — over the far ends, because you sit in the 4x4 for less time before and after the desert; our where to stay in Dubai guide weighs that against everything else. It is a small argument, though: the drive is included, the cabin is cool, and the desert is worth the hour.

FAQ

How do I get to the desert safari in Dubai?

You do not need to — pickup is included. The full-day desert safari, from $45 per person, collects you at your hotel or apartment in Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman in an air-conditioned 4x4 in the afternoon, drives 45-60 minutes east on the E44 to the Lahbab Red Dunes, and returns you to the same door about 7 hours later. You confirm the date and pickup time on WhatsApp; there is no prepayment.

What time is the desert safari pickup?

In the afternoon, at a time that moves with the sunset — earlier in winter, when the sun sets at about 5:30 PM, and later in summer, when it sets at about 7:10 PM. Sharjah and Ajman pickups are earlier because those guests are first on the route. We confirm your exact time on WhatsApp when you book.

Do you pick up from Sharjah and Ajman for the desert safari?

Yes, at the same $45 per person. Sharjah city is 15-25 km from Dubai and Ajman 35-40 km, so those guests are collected first and their pickup is earlier; the return is correspondingly later. The Abu Dhabi city tour also collects in Sharjah and Ajman, with an 8:00 AM Dubai pickup and earlier from Sharjah.

Can I drive to the desert safari myself?

You can drive to Lahbab on the E44 in about 45-60 minutes, but not onto the dunes: a saloon stays on the tarmac, most hire-car contracts exclude off-road driving, and the camp evening is part of the safari rather than a place you turn up at. Since pickup is included in the $45, there is nothing to save by driving.

How far is the desert safari from Dubai Marina?

The Lahbab dunes are about 45-60 km east of the city and the Marina is its western end, so Marina, JBR and Palm hotels are at the far end of the 45-60 minute range and can take a little longer if the afternoon traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road is heavy. Pickup and drop-off are still included, and the return after the camp is on empty roads.

Do you pick up from apartments and holiday rentals?

Yes. Give us the building name and the tower on WhatsApp so the driver can find the entrance, and be at the lobby or gate at the confirmed time. Pickup works the same for hotels, apartments and villas across Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman, and drop-off is back to the same address about 7 hours later.

Do I pay before the pickup?

No. There is no prepayment on the desert safari: you agree the date on WhatsApp, we confirm the pickup time, and you pay on the day of the tour. You can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before your scheduled pickup time, which is why the safari is one of the easiest of our tours to slot into a changing itinerary.
