Ras Al Khaimah is an easy day trip from Dubai: about 100-120 km and 1-1.5 hours by car to the city, and about 2 hours to Jebel Jais, home of the 2.83 km zipline. Pick one theme rather than all of it: the mountain, the old town with Dhayah Fort and the National Museum, or the beach on Marjan Island. A hire car is the best way, and the intercity bus is the cheap one. This guide gives costs, timings and a plan for each kind of day.

How far is Ras Al Khaimah from Dubai?

About 100-120 km to Ras Al Khaimah city, which is 1-1.5 hours by car depending on the traffic through Sharjah and Ajman. Jebel Jais is further: about 2 hours from Dubai Marina, with the last 36 km on a hairpin mountain road.

Three ways to get to Ras Al Khaimah

Taxi or Careem with a waiting fee #1
Door to door from your Dubai hotel Groups of three or four who do not want to drive

Taxi or Careem with a waiting fee

A metered taxi to Ras Al Khaimah city costs roughly AED 250-350 one way on the meter maths, and more to the mountain, so agree a round trip and a waiting fee before you leave. App bookings for a long job can take a while to be accepted, so book the night before or ask at a hotel rank in the morning.

Intercity bus from Dubai #2
RTA intercity buses from Dubai bus stations Solo travellers and budgets; a town day only

Intercity bus from Dubai

The RTA runs an intercity bus to Ras Al Khaimah, and it is by far the cheapest option, but it leaves you at the bus station in the city. You will still need a taxi for the fort, the beaches or the mountain. Check the route number, departure station, times and fare in the S'hail app, because they change.

Skip the drive: a safari with hotel pickup #3
Lahbab Red Dunes, 45-60 minutes from Dubai A big day out with no driving and no navigation

Skip the drive: a safari with hotel pickup

Ras Al Khaimah is two hours of driving there and back before you do anything. If that is more car than your holiday wants, our full-day desert safari collects you from your hotel and returns you after the camp dinner, 7 hours from $45 per person with no prepayment. It is a different day, not a substitute for the mountain.

Ras Al Khaimah in one minute

Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) is the northernmost of the seven emirates and an easy day out from Dubai: about 100-120 km and 1-1.5 hours by car to RAK city, and about 2 hours from Dubai Marina to the top of Jebel Jais. It has the UAE's most dramatic mountain scenery, a handful of forts and old towns, long beaches and mangrove creeks, and it feels quieter than Dubai.

The honest advice is to pick one theme. A mountain day, an old-town day and a beach day are each a good day out, and trying all three means a tired family and a lot of time in the car. The mountain is the headline for most visitors: the Jais Flight zipline is 2.83 km long and reaches up to 150 km/h, and the viewing decks are free. Our Jebel Jais guide has the detail.

We do not run Ras Al Khaimah tours. We run a desert safari and a sunrise balloon from Dubai, and this guide is for guests who ask whether RAK is worth the drive. Costs and times for third-party places are rounded, so check the official sites before you go.

Pick your day: mountain, old town or beach

Each theme has a different pace, cost and best season. The table below sorts them so you can choose before you set off.

DayWhat you doTime on the groundBest monthsWatch out for
MountainJebel Jais viewing decks, Jais Flight zipline or the sledder, lunch at the summit road4-6 hoursNovember to MarchZipline needs booking; it closes in high wind; the top is cold on winter evenings
Old town and fortsDhayah Fort, the National Museum, Jazirat Al Hamra, a corniche walk3-5 hoursOctober to AprilShade is limited at the fort; check opening hours
BeachMarjan Island or Al Rams beaches, mangrove kayaking4-6 hoursOctober to AprilHotel beach clubs charge day fees; public stretches have few facilities

Check opening days and prices on the official pages before you go.

If you have two days, a night in RAK makes the mountain easier, because you can be at the zipline for the first slot without a 6 AM start. If you have one, the mountain in the morning and a late lunch in the city is the best single plan, and you are back in Dubai after dark.

The mountain day: Jebel Jais

Jebel Jais is the reason most visitors come. A 36 km road climbs in hairpins from the plain, with viewpoints, car parks and toilets on the way up, and the summit road has a viewing area and a restaurant. The air is roughly ten degrees cooler than the coast, which is the point in spring and the reason to bring a jacket in winter.

The Jais Flight zipline is the big-ticket item. The Ras Al Khaimah tourism site lists it from about AED 325 per person, depending on the season, with a minimum height of 130 cm and a weight range of 40-120 kg, and other booking sites quote different prices, so check the live price when you book. Book ahead for weekends and holidays, because slots go early, and keep a second date free in case the wind closes the line. The sledder and the viewpoints are the softer options for families and anyone who does not fancy 150 km/h.

The old-town day: Dhayah Fort, the museum and Jazirat Al Hamra

Dhayah Fort is an 18th-century hill fort rebuilt after the British siege of December 1819, on a rocky hill above the palm groves north of the city. The climb is a few minutes up steps, and the view over the date palms and the coast is the reward. Go in the morning or late afternoon, as there is little shade, and check opening hours before you drive out.

The National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah sits in an old fort that was once the home of the ruling family, and it is the easiest way to understand the emirate's history: archaeology, pearling and the Qasimi story. Allow an hour. Jazirat Al Hamra is an old coastal village of coral-stone houses and mosques, mostly empty now, and a good photo stop for people who like quiet ruins. It is not a ticketed attraction, so go in daylight and stay on the paths.

The beach day: Marjan Island, Al Rams and the mangroves

The tourism board lists Marjan Island, Mina, Al Rams and Flamingo among its beaches. Hotel beach clubs charge a day fee that includes loungers, and public stretches tend to have fewer facilities, so ask the price and the rules before you commit. The water is warm from May to October and pleasant from October to April, and the sand is clean and quieter than JBR.

Kayaking through the mangrove creeks is offered by several local operators and suits families and beginners, as the water is flat and sheltered. Wear a hat, bring water and a towel, and keep to the dress and conduct rules that apply on any UAE beach. Our Dubai beach rules and safety guide is a good primer, and the best beaches in Dubai page covers the home-city options if you would rather stay put.

Getting there and back

The usual road is the E311 (Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road) north past Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain, and the drive is easy outside the 7-9:30 AM and 5-8 PM peaks around Dubai and Sharjah. A hire car is the best way to do the day: the sights are spread out and the mountain has no public transport. See how to get from Dubai to Jebel Jais for the timing and the taxi rules.

For the fare rules on long rides, read our taxi and Careem guide. If you would rather drive, renting a car in Dubai as a tourist covers the paperwork.

When to go and what to bring

October to April is the season for everything in this guide. Summer is hot on the coast and the beaches are sweaty, though the mountain is still a few degrees kinder. Weekends in the UAE are Saturday and Sunday, and the mountain roads and car parks are busiest then, so a weekday gives you a calmer day.

Bring a light jacket for the mountain even when Dubai is warm, closed shoes for the fort and the zipline, a hat and sunscreen, water, and your original passport or Emirates ID, since the zipline asks for it. Dress modestly in towns and at museums. A charged phone and an offline map are worth having on the mountain road.

Ras Al Khaimah or something closer?

RAK is worth the drive for the mountain and for a quiet beach, and it is not worth it if you only have one free day and want a sure thing. For that, the full-day desert safari is 7 hours with hotel pickup in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman, from $45 per person (or $65 with the 30-minute quad bike), with dune bashing, a camel ride, a BBQ dinner and the shows. You pay on the day, with no prepayment. The sunrise balloon from $275 gives you the Hajar Mountains on the horizon and a Bedouin breakfast, with pickup before dawn.

If the sea is what you want, the 1-hour shared yacht tour from $32 per person leaves from the Marina pier with hourly departures and needs full prepayment. The other classic days are Hatta for the dam, the east coast for snorkelling and old mosques, Musandam for the fjords and Sharjah for museums. Best day trips from Dubai ranks them.

FAQ

How far is Ras Al Khaimah from Dubai?

About 100-120 km to Ras Al Khaimah city, which is 1-1.5 hours by car depending on the traffic through Sharjah and Ajman. Jebel Jais is further: about 2 hours from Dubai Marina, with the last 36 km on a hairpin mountain road.

Is Ras Al Khaimah worth a day trip from Dubai?

Yes, if you choose one theme: the mountain, the old town or a beach day. Jebel Jais is the best reason to go. Trying everything in one day means a lot of time in the car, so split it over two days if you can.

How do I get from Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah?

Hire a car, take a taxi with an agreed waiting fee or use the RTA intercity bus. The car is best because the sights are spread out and the mountain has no public transport. The usual road is the E311 north through Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain.

How much is the Jais Flight zipline?

The Ras Al Khaimah tourism site lists it from about AED 325 per person depending on the season, while booking sites quote other prices, so check the live price before you go. The line is 2.83 km, you need to be at least 130 cm tall and weigh 40-120 kg.

What is the best time of year to visit Ras Al Khaimah?

October to April for beaches, forts and the mountain, with November to March the most comfortable. In summer the coast is very hot and humid; the mountain is cooler but still sunny, so start early.

Can I do Ras Al Khaimah and Jebel Jais in one day?

Yes, but it is a long day. Leave Dubai by 6:30 AM for a morning zipline or viewing deck, have a late lunch in RAK city and return after dark. If you add the fort and the museum as well, it becomes a rush, so keep it to one theme.

Do you run Ras Al Khaimah tours from Dubai?

No. We run a full-day desert safari from $45 per person, a sunrise balloon from $275 and yacht and water-sports tours, all agreed on WhatsApp. For Ras Al Khaimah, book a hire car, a taxi or a tour with a local operator.
