Jebel Jais is the Hajar Mountains' big day out, about 2 hours from Dubai: the Jais Flight zipline runs 2.83 km at up to 150 km/h, and the mountain road adds viewing decks, a restaurant at 1,484 m, a sledder and walks. Expect it to be about ten degrees cooler than the coast and properly cold on winter nights. The zipline asks for 130 cm minimum height and 40-120 kg. This guide covers what to do, the weather, the limits and a plan for the day.

Four ways to build a Jebel Jais trip
#1
Jebel Jais plus Hatta Dam
Pair Jebel Jais with Hatta on separate days rather than squeezing both into one. Jais is the thrill and the view, with a long drive north; Hatta is the calmer one, with kayaks and pedal boats on a turquoise dam about 130 km east of Dubai. Hatta is best in the cool months, so do both between November and March.
#2
Jais Flight, then a desert safari
A zipline day and a dune day suit people who like speed. Do the mountain first and keep the next evening for our full-day desert safari: 7 hours with hotel pickup, 30-45 minutes of dune bashing, sandboarding, a camel ride and a camp dinner, from $45 per person with no prepayment. Your legs get a rest and you do not drive.
#3
Jais, then a sunrise balloon
The balloon shows the same Hajar range on the horizon from 2,000-4,000 feet, without a long drive or a zipline harness. It is from $275 per person for 4-5 hours with breakfast, and the baskets sell out one to two weeks ahead, so book it before you fix your Jais date. Do not stack it the morning after a late drive back from the mountain.
#4
A weekend in the north and east
If you have a weekend, spend a night in Ras Al Khaimah so the zipline is a relaxed first slot, then cross to the east coast the next day for Snoopy Island and the old mosque at Al Bidyah. It is a lot of road, so only do it in the cool months, and book the zipline and any beach day passes before you set off.
Jebel Jais in one minute
Jebel Jais is the highest mountain in the UAE as it is usually described, quoted at 1,934 m, and the road up is in Ras Al Khaimah, about 2 hours by car from Dubai Marina. The headline is the Jais Flight zipline: 2.83 km long, up to 150 km/h. Around it you get roadside viewing decks, a restaurant at 1,484 m, a sledder, a ropes course and walking routes. The air is roughly ten degrees cooler than the coast.
The honest version: it is a long drive for a short ride. The zipline itself lasts a couple of minutes, and the day is mostly road and views. It is worth it in the cool months for the zipline and the scenery, and it is a poor choice on a hot summer afternoon, in strong wind, or for anyone who dislikes heights. The mountain's very top is near the Oman border, and what you can drive to is lower.
We do not run Jebel Jais tours. This guide is for guests who ask whether it is worth the trip, and it ends with what we run from Dubai instead. The route and transport detail is in how to get from Dubai to Jebel Jais, and the wider area is in the Ras Al Khaimah day trip guide.
What to do on the mountain
Everything is within a short drive of the summit road. Prices and open days change by season, so treat the table as a map of what exists and check the live details when you book.
| Activity | What it is | Limits and notes |
|---|---|---|
| Jais Flight | The zipline: 2.83 km, up to 150 km/h | 130 cm minimum height, 40-120 kg; listed from about AED 325; book ahead |
| Jais Sky Tour | A multi-line zipline route, separate from the Flight | Limits and price differ from the Flight; check when booking |
| Jais Sledder | A sled on a rail track down the mountainside | Family-friendly; check open days and price |
| Ropes course and via ferrata | High ropes and a fixed-cable climbing route | For the confident; check age and fitness limits |
| Viewing decks | Roadside viewpoints along the climb | Generally no ticket at the roadside stops; check any park entry |
| 1484 by Puro | Restaurant at 1,484 m, billed as the highest in the UAE | Open from the morning to early evening; check hours |
Price and hours as listed by the tourism board and operators; confirm before you go.
Most visitors do one big thing and the views. The zipline is the one worth planning the day around; the sledder is the soft option for families, and the ropes course and via ferrata are for people who already climb.
Jais Flight: the zipline in detail
The Ras Al Khaimah tourism site lists the Jais Flight at 2.83 km, with speeds up to 150 km/h, from about AED 325 per person depending on the season. Other booking sites quote higher prices, so compare before you pay and read what is included. The operator also rents a camera for the flight, listed at about AED 150. Minors who meet the height and weight rules ride with a parent or guardian and a signed waiver.
The rules are strict, and they are the reason some visitors are turned away at the top after a two-hour drive. Check them before you leave Dubai:
- Height and weight: at least 130 cm and between 40 and 120 kg.
- ID: an original passport or Emirates ID, not a photo on your phone.
- Clothes: athletic wear and sturdy closed shoes with good grip; dresses and skirts are not allowed, and flip-flops, sandals and heels will be refused.
- Weather: high wind closes the line, so keep a second date free and check the forecast the night before.
- Booking: book ahead on weekends and holidays, arrive with the margin in your confirmation and keep the receipt on your phone.
If you have a fear of heights, a bad back or a heart condition, skip the line and enjoy the viewing decks. The flight is fast and over in a couple of minutes, so it is not a ride to try for the first time while frightened.
The viewing decks, the restaurant and the road
The mountain road is 36 km of hairpins from the plain to the summit area, with car parks and viewpoints on the way. Stop at one on the way up for the layered ridges and save the summit area for lunch. The roadside viewing decks along the climb generally need no booking or ticket, which makes them the cheapest part of the mountain; check whether any park entry applies.
The restaurant at 1,484 m sits beside the summit-road viewing area and serves lunch and coffee with a view across the ridges. It is optional, but a hot drink there is a treat on a cold winter morning. For the full day you can also bring your own food and water, and the car parks have toilets nearby.
Weather: cold at the top, wind on the line
The mountain is about ten degrees cooler than the coast, and on clear winter nights readings below freezing have been recorded at the top, so bring a jacket even when Dubai is warm. The zipline is the weather-sensitive item: it closes in strong wind, and a cloudy day hides the view you drove for.
| Season | On the mountain (approx.) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| November to March | Cool by day, cold in the evening | Best: clear views and comfortable walking; bring a jacket |
| April and October | Warm by day, cooler in the shade | Good; start early |
| May to September | Hot sun, still cooler than the coast | Go early or skip; high heat and glare |
| After rain | Wet roads, low cloud, possible closures | Check the operator and the forecast first |
Approximate; check the forecast and the operator on the day.

Getting there and timing the day
By hire car it is about 150-170 km and 2 hours from Dubai Marina, a little less from Deira, and public transport reaches Ras Al Khaimah city but not the mountain. A taxi works for a group if you agree a round trip and a waiting fee. Fill the tank in RAK city, because the mountain road has viewpoints, not petrol stations. See the taxi and Careem guide and renting a car in Dubai for the practicalities.
- 6:30 AM: leave Dubai against the commute.
- 8:00 AM: fuel and coffee in Ras Al Khaimah city.
- 9:00 AM: first viewing deck on the climb.
- 10:00 AM: a zipline slot, arriving with the margin in your booking.
- 12:00 PM: lunch at the summit area, then the sledder if you want it.
- 2:30 PM: viewpoints on the way down, back in Dubai by about 5 PM.
Who should go, and who should skip
Go if you like views, speed and cool air, you can manage a long drive, and you are travelling between November and March. Go with teenagers, as the zipline suits them, and with friends who want a day that is not the beach. Skip it if you are short of time, travelling with small children (the zipline is 130 cm and up, though the viewing decks and the sledder are easier), or visiting in the heat of July and August.
If you can only do one mountain day, the choice is between Jais and Hatta. Jais gives you the zipline and the altitude; Hatta gives you water and a heritage village on a slightly shorter, easier road. Best day trips from Dubai compares all of them.
Jebel Jais or a thrill closer to Dubai
Two hours each way is a lot of driving. If you want adventure with the transport built in, the full-day desert safari is 7 hours with hotel pickup in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman, from $45 per person or $65 with the 30-minute quad bike, and you pay on the day. The sunrise balloon from $275 gives you the Hajar Mountains from the air, with breakfast and a camel ride after landing.
For speed on the water, the jet ski to the Burj Al Arab is from $79 per jet ski for 30 minutes at Umm Suqeim harbour, with an instructor and photos, and the full-hour ride at $140 continues to Atlantis. Full prepayment confirms the slot, and every rider needs an original passport or Emirates ID. The adventure activities guide compares the options by price and adrenaline.
