Five ways to spend an evening on the water

Creek dhow dinner cruise #1
Deira or Bur Dubai jetties; about 8 PM; 1.5-2 hours Old Dubai at night, value and a slow pace

Creek dhow dinner cruise

A buffet dinner on a two-deck boat gliding through the old trading waterway between Bur Dubai and Deira, with the heritage quarter and the souks lit along the banks. It is the cheaper cruise, from about AED 70-130, and the Creek is sheltered water, so the ride is calm. The entertainment is usually a Tanoura dancer with Arabic music.

Marina dhow dinner cruise #2
Marina Walk area; about 8 PM; 1.5-2 hours Towers, lights and a livelier evening

Marina dhow dinner cruise

The same dinner-on-a-dhow format with a very different backdrop: illuminated skyscrapers, moored yachts and the Ain Dubai wheel on the horizon. Expect to pay from about AED 120-150, more than the Creek, and a louder, more modern feel. It suits families and first-timers who want the skyline rather than the heritage.

Shared yacht tour, 1 hour #3
Dubai Marina pier (Level P, Al Majara Tower); hourly; from $32 Open decks, photos and no fixed dinner

Shared yacht tour, 1 hour

Our premium yacht sails the Marina canal, JBR and Bluewaters, with a photo stop at Ain Dubai, a red-carpet boarding and chilled water. It runs on an hourly schedule, so you choose a sunset or evening slot, and it is a better camera platform than a dhow. It has no dinner, so eat before or afterwards.

Marina yacht party, 21+ #4
Marina pier behind Al Majara Tower; 9 PM-1 AM; $99 A night out rather than a quiet dinner

Marina yacht party, 21+

A four-hour shared cruise for guests aged 21 and over, with a live DJ, a live BBQ from the grill and unlimited soft drinks. It is the opposite of a heritage dinner: loud, social and on the move between decks. Boarding is at 8:30 PM for a 9 PM departure, and full pre-payment confirms the booking.

Old Dubai walk with an abra ride #5
Al Fahidi to the Creek and the souks; 3-4 hours; from $35 The Creek by day, with a guide

Old Dubai walk with an abra ride

If the Creek is the draw, our guided walk includes the abra crossing, the wind-tower quarter, Al Seef, the Spice and Gold Souks, Arabic coffee and dates, with a $55 option adding street-food tastings. It pairs naturally with a Creek dinner dhow in the evening for one full day in Old Dubai.

Dhow cruise in Dubai: the short answer

Choose the Creek for Old Dubai and the lower price, and the Marina for the skyline. A Creek dinner dhow costs from about AED 70-130 per person; a Marina dhow from about AED 120-150. Both sail in the evening, usually at around 8 PM, for 1.5-2 hours, and both put you on a two-deck wooden-style boat with a buffet dinner and a live Tanoura dancer.

The Creek is the quieter and more atmospheric of the two: the old waterway between Bur Dubai and Deira, past the heritage quarter and the souks. The Marina is the more modern: towers, superyachts, JBR and the Ain Dubai wheel. If you can do only one, the Creek is the cruise you cannot get anywhere else, and the Marina is the one that overlaps with a yacht trip.

Prices are rounded from operators' listings and change by season, boat and date, so check the current fare and what is included before you pay. For a different kind of evening on the water, see the section on yachts below and the Creek-only guide, the Creek dhow dinner cruise.

Approximate figures from operators' listings; fares, boarding points and timings differ by boat, so check your own booking.

Most listings include a welcome drink or soft drinks, while other drinks are normally charged separately; do not assume alcohol is served, and ask the operator. During Ramadan, entertainment and drinks can be limited.

What a dhow dinner is really like

A dhow is a traditional wooden boat. The dinner cruises are built on that shape, usually with an air-conditioned lower deck where the buffet and the show happen and an open upper deck for the breeze and the view. In summer, you eat inside and visit the deck between courses; in winter, the open deck is the best seat on board.

The food is a buffet of Arabic and international dishes, sometimes served as set courses, and it is reliable rather than memorable. Think of dinner as part of the ticket, not the reason to go. The entertainment is typically a Tanoura dancer with oud or Arabic music, and some boats add a belly dancer. The Creek version keeps the volume lower; the Marina version is livelier.

Be honest with yourself about the pace. A dhow sails slowly and you spend much of it at a table, so the best photographs come from the open deck in the first half hour. If you want to move around, take photos from every side or keep children entertained, a yacht is the better platform.

Dinner cruise or sightseeing yacht

These are different products at different prices. A dinner dhow sells the evening; a yacht sells the view and the freedom.

Dhow prices are approximate and third-party; yacht prices are ours, as on the tour pages. Yacht party: full pre-payment, ID required.

For an evening with a sunset, the shared yacht tour from $32 usually beats a dhow for the money: you choose the slot, it leaves hourly, and the crew helps with photos against JBR and Ain Dubai. The Marina sunset cruise guide gives the times by month. For a private boat, see our charter fleet and yacht rental prices.

Season and timing: when to sail

Dinner dhows sail at around 8 PM all year, which is after dark in every month, so you will not see a sunset from one. If a golden-hour view matters, pick the yacht: our sunset yacht guide lists the sunset time by month, and the shared hour leaves hourly.

The cooler months, November to March, suit the open upper deck best, and a light jacket helps once the boat is moving. From May to September the lower deck is the place to be, and the evening is a good break from the heat of the day, though the walk from the Metro or the taxi drop-off is still warm. The month-by-month guide covers the weather, and some Creek operators also run daytime sightseeing sailings if you want to see the banks in daylight.

Weekends and public holidays are the busiest, and the boats fill with groups, so book early and pick a mid-week date if you can. If you plan a long day in Old Dubai first, a late-afternoon rest at the hotel before an 8 PM boarding is worth building in.

Who should pick which

A few rules of thumb help.

Couples with a taste for history should take the Creek: it is cheaper, quieter and unlike anything else in the city. Families with young children should lean to the Marina dhow, where there is more to look at, or to the shared yacht, which welcomes children under adult supervision and has hourly slots that fit bedtimes. Photographers should choose the yacht on the Marina, where the crew helps with the shot of the skyline.

Budget travellers should look at the Creek dhow first, and a very cheap alternative is the public abra across the Creek by day, for about AED 1-2. If you are travelling in the hot months, the cooler evening makes either cruise fine; the lower deck is air-conditioned. Guests who dislike a fixed seating, a buffet and a show should skip the dhow altogether and take the yacht. The Old Dubai guide fits a dhow evening into a day.

Booking, boarding and getting home

Book ahead for weekends and holidays, when sailings fill up. Boarding usually opens about 30 minutes before departure, and the boat leaves on time, so arrive early. Hotel transfers are optional extras on some listings and raise the price, so decide whether a taxi or the Metro is simpler.

For the Creek, the Green Line stations at Al Ras and Baniyas Square are within walking distance of many jetties. For the Marina, take the Red Line to DMCC or Sobha Realty and the tram or a short taxi. Cruises usually return around 10-10:30 PM, which is inside Metro hours, though it is worth checking the last train. The Metro guide and the Marina yacht pier guide cover the walks.

Dress smart casual. The dhow is air-conditioned downstairs but breezy on deck, so carry a light layer in winter. For our own boats, shoes come off before boarding, and for the yacht party swimwear is not permitted.
