Where is the best place to watch the sunrise in Dubai?

Over the desert from a hot air balloon, from $275 per person with us, with pre-dawn hotel pickup and 4-5 hours door to door. For a free option, Al Qudra Lakes, about 30-40 km from Downtown, work at sunrise if you have a taxi booked the night before. The beaches face north-west, so the sun rises behind them, not out of the sea.

Five places to watch the sunrise

The desert from a hot air balloon #1
Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve Couples, photographers and anyone who wants the full sunrise

The desert from a hot air balloon

Our shared sunrise balloon flight is from $275 per person, with pre-dawn hotel pickup and drop-off anywhere in Dubai city and 4-5 hours door to door. You see gazelles, oryx and camels, the Hajar Mountains on the horizon and the dunes turning gold, then have breakfast at a Bedouin camp. It flies in the cooler months and depends on the wind.

Al Qudra Lakes at first light #2
About 30-40 km south-west of Downtown A free, quiet sunrise with birds

Al Qudra Lakes at first light

Gulf News lists sunrise and sunset as the popular times at the lakes, and Khaleej Times says migratory birds are expected from November to March. The reserve is free and unfenced, with no metro, so you need a taxi booked the night before or your own car. Bring layers, water and binoculars.

Kite Beach and the Jumeirah beaches #3
Jumeirah, with the Burj Al Arab on the horizon A run, a walk and morning light on the coast

Kite Beach and the Jumeirah beaches

A free public beach with a 14 km coastal track, showers and the Burj Al Arab in view. The sun rises behind the beach, not out of the sea, so you get the light arriving on the sand and the buildings rather than a sunrise over water. It is quiet before 10 AM and a good place for a run.

The Burj Khalifa in the first hours #4
The Dubai Mall, Downtown Clear morning air and fewer people

The Burj Khalifa in the first hours

Our Burj Khalifa timing guide gives opening hours of 7 AM to 11 PM, which is after sunrise in most months, so the decks give you the first hour of light rather than the sunrise itself. Tickets are from $55 per person for Levels 124 and 125, for a fixed date and time slot.

The east coast, for sunrise over the sea #5
Fujairah and Khor Fakkan, on the Gulf of Oman Anyone who wants the sun coming out of the water

The east coast, for sunrise over the sea

Fujairah is about 130 km and 1.5-2 hours each way from Dubai, and its whole coast is on the Gulf of Oman, which faces east. It is the place in the UAE to see the sun rise out of the sea. The drive needs an overnight stay or a very early start, and we do not run east-coast tours.

Best sunrise spots in Dubai: the short answer

For a full sunrise, fly over the desert in a hot air balloon. It is the best way to see the sun come up in Dubai, and it is from $275 per person with us. For a free sunrise, go to Al Qudra Lakes with a taxi you booked the night before. For an easy start to the day in the city, use Kite Beach, and for the sun coming up out of the sea, you have to drive to the east coast.

The reason is geography. Dubai's beaches face north-west across the Gulf, so the sun rises behind you, over the city, and sets into the sea. That makes Dubai a better city for sunsets than for sunrises over water, and our best sunset spots in Dubai covers the evening. At dawn you are choosing between light on the desert, light on the coast and light on the towers. First light comes about 25 minutes before the sun is up, which is the time to be in place.

Sunrise times by month

Sunrise moves by about an hour and a half across the year. The times below are for mid-month, rounded to five minutes, and calculated for Dubai from solar position tables; they are a guide, and a weather or sunrise app gives the exact minute.

Sunrise is about 6:27 AM on 2 November and about 7:06 AM in the middle of January. First light is when the sky starts to brighten.

The desert from a balloon: the full sunrise

Our sunrise balloon flight is a shared flight over the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, from $275 per person. We collect you from your hotel anywhere in Dubai city before dawn and bring you back, and the whole morning takes 4-5 hours. After landing, a vintage Land Rover or SUV takes you to a private Bedouin camp for breakfast, with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, a short camel ride and a falcon photo. Every guest gets an electronic flight certificate signed by the pilot.

For an independent idea of what the morning is like, Khaleej Times reported that on New Year's Day this year hundreds of people flew over the Dubai desert to watch the first sunrise of the year. Guests arrived at the launch site at about 5:30 AM, the balloons took off at about 6:30 AM, the flights lasted about an hour and the air was cool enough that guests kept their jackets on. That was with other operators, but the rhythm is the same: dark pickup, a cold take-off site, an hour in the air, and the sun coming up over the dunes.

Two honest points. A balloon has no steering and the pilots decide on the morning whether the wind allows a flight, so a morning when the balloon stays on the ground is part of the product; if ours is cancelled you get a full refund or a new date. And the balloon flies roughly from September or October to May, with November to March the best stretch. Our balloon season guide has the months and the cancellation rules, what to wear covers the cold, and the photo guide covers the shots.

Al Qudra Lakes at first light, without a balloon

If the balloon is too much money or too early, Al Qudra Lakes are the free alternative. Gulf News lists sunrise and sunset as the popular times at the lakes in the Al Marmoom reserve, and Khaleej Times says migratory birds are expected from November to March. The reserve is open to the public and unfenced, and it is about 30-40 km south-west of Downtown, with no metro and no bus route that we could find.

The practical problem is the pre-dawn drive. Book a taxi the night before for about 5 AM, agree the price for the way back, and bring a warm layer: the desert is colder than the city at dawn. Our Al Qudra Lakes guide covers the wildlife, picnic rules and the taxi plan in detail.

Beaches: Kite Beach and why the sun is behind you

On a Dubai public beach the sun rises over the buildings behind you. What you get is the first light arriving on the sand and the shoreline, and, in clear air, on the towers and the Burj Al Arab along the coast. It is a calm hour, not a spectacle, and it suits a run, a walk or a swim.

Kite Beach is the easy choice: free, about 2.4 km long, with a 14 km coastal track, showers and the Burj Al Arab on the horizon, according to Gulf News. Our Jumeirah guide describes it as best before 10 AM. Swim only inside the marked zone when a lifeguard is on duty, which is generally from sunrise to sunset, and stay out when the red flag is up. At the earliest first light there may be no lifeguard, so wait until the towers are staffed.

The Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Frame: after sunrise, not at it

Searchers ask about a sunrise from the Burj Khalifa, and the honest answer is that you get the first hour of light, not the sunrise. Our best time to visit the Burj Khalifa guide gives opening hours of 7 AM to 11 PM. Sunrise is before 7 AM for most of the year. Only from about 22 December to early February does it fall at 7:00-7:06 AM, within minutes of opening, and the walk through the mall, the security check and the exhibition all come before the lift. The Dubai Frame opens at 8 AM, which is later still.

What an early slot does give you is clear air, low light and fewer people. November to March has the clearest air, and a morning slot shows the city by day. Our Burj Khalifa tickets start from $55 per person for Levels 124 and 125, and the slot is fixed once it is issued, so check the date and time. Opening hours can change, so check before you go.

The east coast: the sun out of the sea

If you want the sun rising out of the water, go where the coast faces east. Fujairah is the only emirate whose whole coast is on the Gulf of Oman, about 130 km and 1.5-2 hours each way from Dubai. Khor Fakkan and Al Aqah, with Snoopy Island just offshore, are the usual stops. A day trip from Dubai cannot reach it by sunrise unless you leave around 4:30 AM, so it works best with a night on the coast. Our Fujairah and east coast guide has the route and the sights, and we do not run east-coast tours.

What to bring and how to get there before dawn

A few things make a pre-dawn start work. In the cool months the city's overnight low is 14-20°C and the desert is colder, so wear layers you can take off. Close the plans the night before: a balloon pickup is arranged with us on WhatsApp, a taxi to Al Qudra or the beach should be booked in advance, and a charged phone and water go in the bag.

  • A warm layer for the cold take-off site or lakeside, and closed shoes for sand.
  • Water, and a snack if you go to the lakes, where Gulf News reported no shops nearby.
  • A fully charged phone, and a torch for the walk in the dark.
  • A booked ride back if you go by taxi: few cars wait in the desert.
  • A plan for the rest of the day, because you will be tired by noon: breakfast, then a late morning rest.

FAQ

Where is the best place to watch the sunrise in Dubai?

Over the desert from a hot air balloon, from $275 per person with us, with pre-dawn hotel pickup and 4-5 hours door to door. For a free option, Al Qudra Lakes, about 30-40 km from Downtown, work at sunrise if you have a taxi booked the night before. The beaches face north-west, so the sun rises behind them, not out of the sea.

What time is sunrise in Dubai?

About 5:30 AM in June and about 7:05 AM in January, calculated from solar position tables for Dubai. In November it is about 6:35 AM and in December about 6:55 AM. First light is about 25 minutes earlier, so plan to be in place before it. Check an app for the exact minute on your day.

Can you see the sunrise over the sea in Dubai?

Not from Dubai's own beaches, which face north-west across the Gulf, so the sun rises behind you. For the sun coming out of the sea you need the east coast: Fujairah and Khor Fakkan, on the Gulf of Oman, about 130 km and 1.5-2 hours from Dubai. Most visitors stay a night there to make the sunrise.

Can you watch the sunrise from the Burj Khalifa?

Not the sunrise itself in most months. Our timing guide gives opening hours of 7 AM to 11 PM, and the sun is up before 7 AM for most of the year. From about 22 December to early February it rises at 7:00-7:06 AM, around opening time. A morning slot gives clear air and low light instead. Check the opening hours for your date.

Does the hot air balloon fly every morning?

No. It flies roughly from September or October to May, with November to March the best stretch, and only when the wind allows. The pilots decide on the morning. If our flight is cancelled you get a full refund or a new date. Summer flights depend on the weather, so ask us for your dates.

How do I get to Al Qudra Lakes for sunrise without a car?

By taxi or Careem, booked the night before: it is about 30-40 km from Downtown, roughly AED 75-85 each way by our estimate at the taxi rate. There is no metro, and we found no bus route. Arrange the ride back before you set off. Our Al Qudra Lakes guide has the details.

What should I wear for a sunrise in Dubai?

Layers. From November to March the city's overnight low is 14-20°C and the desert is colder, especially at the take-off site of a balloon flight. Wear a T-shirt, a fleece or jumper, a light jacket, long trousers and closed shoes for sand, and take layers off as the sun comes up.
