The easiest first dive near Dubai is at Deep Dive Dubai, a pool 60 m deep with a sunken city, where a try-dive for non-certified guests starts from about AED 1,200. For a real reef, drive 1.5-2 hours to Fujairah, Dibba or Khor Fakkan; Dubai's own sea offers wrecks and artificial reefs with modest visibility. This guide compares the three, covers certification and age rules, the best months and the flying rule after a dive, and points to our jet ski ride if you want the sea without the tank.

Four places to dive from Dubai
#1
No-sea dives: Deep Dive Dubai and the city aquariums
Deep Dive Dubai's pool is 60 m deep with a sunken city of rooms, vehicles and a library to swim through. Non-certified scuba dives go to 12 m with an instructor from age 10, from about AED 1,200, and snorkelling and a non-swimmer walk cost less. The city aquariums have run supervised dives too; check what is on for your dates.
#2
Boat dives off Dubai's coast
Dubai's own dives are by boat, to wrecks and artificial reefs where fish gather around the metal. Visibility is modest and changes from day to day, so ask the dive centre what it was last week. You do not leave the city, which is the whole appeal, and the sea is warm enough for a thin suit from about May to October.
#3
Snoopy Island, Al Aqah
The east coast's best-known spot is a small rocky islet just off the beach, with reef fish, rays and sometimes turtles in water that is generally clearer than on the Gulf side. Dive centres on the beach run boat and shore dives and courses; confirm what is offered for your level. It is a long day trip, so book the first slot or stay the night.
#4
Dibba Rock, Shark Island and the Fujairah wrecks
Further along the same coast are Dibba Rock, Shark Island off Khor Fakkan and wrecks off Fujairah. Dive boats leave from the harbours for reefs with turtles, rays and shoals of fish. These are boat dives for certified divers, or for beginners with an instructor, and sea conditions decide whether the boat goes.
Scuba diving in Dubai: the short answer
The easiest first dive near Dubai is at Deep Dive Dubai, a pool 60 m deep with a sunken city, where a try-dive for non-certified guests (from age 10, down to 12 m) starts from about AED 1,200. For a real reef, drive 1.5-2 hours (about 130 km) to Fujairah, Dibba or Khor Fakkan on the Gulf of Oman, where the water is generally clearer and the marine life richer than on Dubai's Gulf side. Dubai's own sea has wrecks and artificial reefs, reached by boat, with modest visibility.
Choose by what you hold. No certificate means a try-dive with an instructor, in the pool or in shallow sea water. An Open Water card means boat dives anywhere on this page. No wish to dive at all means our guide to snorkelling in Dubai and Fujairah, or a jet ski for a different view of the sea. The comfortable months are October to December and March to May. Prices are rounded from official sites and listings, so confirm before you book.
One honest note: we are a tour company, not a dive centre, and we do not sell dives. We write this guide for guests who ask, and we run jet ski, speedboat, flyboard and parasailing rides for those who want the water without the tank.
Dubai or Fujairah: the comparison
The two coasts are different seas. Dubai sits on the shallow Gulf, Fujairah and Dibba on the deeper Gulf of Oman, and that explains most of the table.
| Dubai (Gulf side) | Fujairah, Dibba, Khor Fakkan (Gulf of Oman) | |
|---|---|---|
| What you see | Wrecks and artificial reefs with fish around them, rays, the odd turtle | Rock and coral reefs: reef fish, rays, moray eels, turtles and, on some sites, small reef sharks |
| Visibility | Modest and variable | Generally better, though swell and plankton still change it |
| Travel from central Dubai | Minutes to the harbour, then a boat ride | About 130 km, 1.5-2 hours each way |
| Water in winter | About 20-22 °C: a 5 mm suit | About 22-24 °C: a 3-5 mm suit |
| Water in summer | Up to about 33-34 °C; plankton can cloud it | About 28-31 °C |
| Best for | Certified divers short on time, wreck fans | Reefs, beginners with an instructor, a full day or a weekend |
| Price signal | Boat dives are priced per trip; ask what kit is included | Two-dive boat trips with kit have been listed from about AED 350-450; confirm |
Temperatures and visibility are approximate and change by the week. The dive centre knows the current conditions.
The simple rule: with one day and a dive certificate, Fujairah is worth the drive. With a free morning, a try-dive in the pool or a wreck dive off the city costs you no road time. If you are in Dubai for a week, do the pool first and decide about the coast afterwards.
Deep Dive Dubai: the beginner's answer
Deep Dive Dubai in Nad Al Sheba calls itself the world's deepest pool and is built as a sunken city, with rooms, vehicles and a library to swim through. It is an unusually forgiving place to learn: the water is warm and clear every day of the year, and an instructor stays beside you. The site has a café with underwater windows, so the rest of the family can watch. A non-certified scuba dive starts with a short introduction, practice in shallow water, and then a dive down to 12 m.
The official site lists several levels, from a walk for non-swimmers to dives for experienced divers. These are the entry prices at the time of writing:
| Experience | Minimum age | Who it is for | From about |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunken City Walk: full-face mask, 4 m deep, about 20 minutes underwater | 10 | Non-swimmers and nervous guests | AED 600 |
| Snorkelling over the sunken city | 6 | Families and first-timers | AED 400 |
| Discover scuba diving: non-certified, down to 12 m | 10 | A first dive with an instructor | AED 1,200 |
| Freediving on a single breath | 13 | Beginners and certified freedivers | AED 900 |
| Specialised dives for certified divers | 15 | Certified divers | AED 1,500 |
From the operator's own website. Prices change, so check the current list before you book.
Book ahead for weekends and holiday dates. The pool also answers a summer problem: when the sea is at its least inviting, the dive is still the same.
The big city aquariums are the other no-sea option. The Dubai Aquarium in The Dubai Mall and the tanks at Atlantis have offered supervised dives for certified divers and cage experiences for others, and the offers change, so check what is on for your dates. Our Dubai Aquarium guide and Lost Chambers guide cover the tanks themselves.
Fujairah, Dibba and Khor Fakkan: the east coast
The east coast is where divers drive to. The Gulf of Oman side of the UAE has rocky headlands and small islands with coral, and the water is generally clearer than in the Gulf. The best-known spots are Snoopy Island at Al Aqah, Dibba Rock, Shark Island off Khor Fakkan and wrecks off Fujairah. You can expect reef fish in numbers, rays, moray eels and turtles. Nothing is guaranteed with wildlife, and good dive centres say so.
Distance is the catch. It is about 130 km and 1.5-2 hours from central Dubai each way, so a day trip means leaving by about 6:00 AM to catch the first boat and getting back after dark. Many divers stay a night on the coast, or fold the dive into the wider route in our Fujairah and east coast day trip guide. Sea state decides the day: swell can cancel a boat dive, so call the centre the day before and again that morning.
Centres on the beaches run boat dives, shore dives, try-dives and courses. Two-dive boat trips with kit have been listed from about AED 350-450, and boat, tanks and kit may be priced separately, so ask for the full figure before you drive out.
Certification, age and the medical form
The rules are the same worldwide, and the dive centre has the final word on every one of them:
- Try-dive, no certificate: an instructor stays beside you in shallow water after a short briefing. The minimum age is usually 10.
- Open Water course: the entry-level certificate, usually 3-4 days. Many people do the theory online before they arrive, to save holiday time.
- Already certified: bring your card. After a long break (a year is a common limit) centres usually ask for a refresher dive.
- Medical form: every centre asks for one. Conditions such as asthma, heart or ear problems, or pregnancy can mean a doctor must clear you first, and diving is not recommended in pregnancy. Ask your own doctor.
- Flying after a dive: the usual guidance is to wait at least 12 hours after a single dive and 18 hours after repeated dives or diving on several days. Follow your centre's rule, and do not book a dive on your last day.
- Licensed centres only: book a licensed dive centre with qualified instructors, and ask about insurance.
Best months and what to bring
Diving runs all year, but comfort changes. October to December is the best window: the water is still warm and the air has cooled. January and February are the coolest months and need a thicker suit, about 5 mm on the Dubai side. March to May brings the water back up. From June to September the sea is very warm and a thin suit is enough, but plankton can cloud the Gulf and the air above it is brutal, so dive early and drink water.
Whatever the month, bring your certification card and logbook, swimwear, a towel, sunscreen and a hat. If you are prone to seasickness, ask a pharmacist about tablets before you board. Sunburn on a dive boat is easy to get, and a rash vest solves it.
If you want the sea without the tank
Our rides stay on the surface, but they are the quickest way to see Dubai's sea. The jet ski ride to the Burj Al Arab is from $79 per jet ski for 30 minutes, or $140 for a full hour that continues to Atlantis on the Palm. An instructor rides in front, two people share one jet ski at no extra cost, and photos and videos are free. The meeting point is Umm Suqeim Fishing Harbour on Jumeirah Road, not JBR, with no hotel pickup. Every rider needs an original passport or Emirates ID, the driver must be 16 or older and a passenger at least 5, and full prepayment confirms the slot. The details are in our jet ski guide.
The Marina speedboat tour, from $45, is a shared 90 minutes with up to 22 guests, photo stops at JBR, Ain Dubai, Atlantis The Palm and the Burj Al Arab, and up to nine departures a day. Parasailing from $99 gives 10-12 minutes in the air. None of these includes snorkelling or diving. For the whole list see water sports in Dubai.
FAQ
How much does a first scuba dive cost near Dubai?
At Deep Dive Dubai a non-certified scuba dive (down to 12 m, from age 10) starts from about AED 1,200, a Sunken City Walk for non-swimmers from about AED 600 and snorkelling from about AED 400. Boat dives on the east coast are priced per trip. Prices change, so check the official sites.
Is Dubai good for scuba diving?
It is good for convenience, wrecks and the beginner pool, and average for natural reefs. For coral and clearer water, drive to Fujairah, Dibba or Khor Fakkan, about 130 km away.
Can you scuba dive in Dubai without a licence?
Yes. Try-dives for non-certified guests run with an instructor, in the Deep Dive Dubai pool down to 12 m or in shallow sea water. The minimum age is usually 10.
How far is Fujairah from Dubai for diving?
About 130 km, 1.5-2 hours by road each way. Snoopy Island at Al Aqah, Dibba Rock and Khor Fakkan are all on the same coast, so a long day or an overnight stay works better than a rushed return.
When can you fly after scuba diving?
The usual guidance is at least 12 hours after a single dive and 18 hours after repeated dives or diving on several days. Follow your dive centre's rule and do not dive on your last day.
What is the best time of year to dive near Dubai?
October to December and March to May. Winter water is about 20-22 °C on the Dubai side and 22-24 °C on the east coast, so bring a thicker suit from January to February. Summer water is very warm, but plankton can reduce visibility.
Can children scuba dive in Dubai?
Try-dives usually start at age 10, including at Deep Dive Dubai. Younger children can snorkel there from age 6. The dive centre decides on fitness and the medical form.
Do you run dive trips?
No. We run a jet ski ride from $79, a Marina speedboat tour from $45, and flyboard, parasailing, donut and wakeboard sessions at Umm Suqeim harbour. Dives are booked with a licensed dive centre.
