You can watch the big tank for free; the full Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo ticket starts from about AED 150 and takes 1.5-2 hours. The aquarium is inside The Dubai Mall, a short walk from the Burj Khalifa entrance. The paid route adds a walk-through tunnel under the water and the zoo upstairs, and higher tickets add extras. This guide explains the free panel against the ticket, what each level includes, the best time, and how to pair it with a Burj Khalifa visit.

Five ways to fill the day around the aquarium
#1
The Waterfall Atrium
The mall's indoor waterfall, with its silver diver sculptures, is one of the easiest free stops in the building and is in the same mall as the aquarium. Look down from an upper floor for the best angle. It makes a good pause before or after the paid route, and it costs nothing.
#2
Burj Khalifa, At the Top
The entrance is in the same mall, so the aquarium and the tower fit one Downtown day. Aquarium in the morning, lunch, then a Burj Khalifa slot about an hour before sunset. Levels 124 and 125 have no time limit, so one ticket from $55 covers daylight and the lit city. We book the date and slot on WhatsApp.
#3
The Dubai Fountain
Shows play on Burj Lake every 30 minutes from about 6 PM, and the lakeside boardwalk is free. If the aquarium is your afternoon and the tower your sunset, the Fountain is the natural last stop. Come before the show to claim a place at the railing, because the good spots fill up. The Fountain guide has the viewpoints.
#4
The Lost Chambers at Atlantis
The other big aquarium visit in Dubai is on the Palm, in a setting designed as sunken Atlantis ruins, with eagle rays and shoals of fish at its Ambassador Lagoon window. It is a taxi or monorail ride from Downtown, so it needs its own half day. Our Lost Chambers guide covers tickets and whether to pick it or this one.
#5
Burj Park and the lake walk
A free walk to Burj Park, the oval lawn island in the lake, gives the classic angle on the tower, which you cannot photograph from inside it. Go in the late afternoon from November to March, or after sunset in summer, when the paths cool. It is also the easiest place to let children run around.
Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo in one minute
The big tank is free to watch. From the floor of The Dubai Mall you can stand at a huge acrylic panel, one of the largest in the world, and see sharks, rays and shoals of fish in a tank of about 10 million litres. The full Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo ticket starts from about AED 150 for the standard entry, with the Explorer ticket around AED 200, and the paid route takes 1.5-2 hours.
The aquarium is inside The Dubai Mall, a short walk from the entrance to the Burj Khalifa observation decks, and it opens at 10:00 AM. Prices and what each ticket includes change, so confirm them on the official website before you buy. We book the Burj Khalifa side of the day: a Burj Khalifa ticket from $55 per person, with the date and slot agreed on WhatsApp.
Free panel or paid ticket?
The honest answer depends on who is with you. The free panel gives you the headline view in 10-20 minutes at no cost. The paid route gives you the tunnel under the water, the zoo upstairs and a longer time with the animals. The table sets the three levels side by side.
| Free viewing panel | Standard ticket | Explorer ticket | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost (about) | Free | From AED 150 | Around AED 200 |
| What you get | The big tank from the mall floor | The walk-through tunnel and the Underwater Zoo | The standard route plus extras such as a glass-bottom boat ride |
| Time | 10-20 minutes | 1.5-2 hours | 2 hours or more |
| Best for | A quick look, a tight budget, adults on their own | Families, animal fans, a hot or wet day | Anyone who wants the extras and does not mind the price |
Prices are rounded and change; the list of what each ticket includes also changes, so check the official website before you buy.
If you have been to a large aquarium in another city, the free panel and twenty minutes may be enough. If you travel with children between about three and ten, the tunnel and the zoo are usually what they remember, and the paid ticket is worth it.
What the paid route includes
The standard route is in two parts: the aquarium, with the walk-through tunnel passing under the main tank, and the Underwater Zoo upstairs, with animals that live in and around water. The exhibits and the animals on show change over time, so treat the list as a guide:
- The tunnel: you walk under the main tank with sharks and rays passing overhead, which is the part that children talk about afterwards.
- The Underwater Zoo: animals from reefs, rainforests and rocky shores, including a saltwater crocodile and penguins. The penguins are sold as a separate or higher-tier add-on on some tickets, so check which one you are buying.
- Extras: higher tickets and add-ons include a glass-bottom boat ride and behind-the-scenes tours. Cage snorkelling and shark dives exist at extra cost and have their own rules, so ask the aquarium directly if either interests you.
Tickets and opening hours
The aquarium opens at 10:00 AM and stays open into the evening. The closing time varies by day and by season, with later closing at weekends, so check the official hours for your date. Book online in advance for weekends, school holidays and the winter months, when queues form at the ticket desk.
Very young children are free, but the age cut-off is set by the aquarium and can change, so check it when you book.
What to wear is simple: it is inside a mall, so the usual mall standard applies, with shoulders and knees covered as the polite default, as the Dubai dress code guide explains. Bring a light layer if you feel the cold, because the halls are air-conditioned, and comfortable shoes, since the mall and the aquarium together involve a lot of walking. Keep your Burj Khalifa e-ticket on your phone, because you will go from one to the other.
How long, and the best time to go
Allow 1.5-2 hours for the paid route and 10-20 minutes for the free panel. Weekday mornings after 10:00 AM are the quietest, and weekends, public holidays and school holidays are the busiest. In summer, the aquarium is one of the best ways to spend the middle of a 40°C day, so book a late-morning slot and have lunch in the mall; our guide to what to do in Dubai in the summer heat has more.
If you plan to go up the Burj Khalifa on the same day, put the aquarium first and the tower at the end. In November and December, sunset is at about 5:30 PM, so a Burj Khalifa slot at about 4:30 PM follows an aquarium morning comfortably. In June and July, sunset comes at about 7:05 PM and the slot moves to about 6:00 PM. The best-time guide has the table for every month.
Pairing it with Burj Khalifa and the rest of The Dubai Mall
The aquarium, the Waterfall Atrium, the At the Top entrance and the lakeside Fountain are all in the same stretch of Downtown. Come by Metro to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall and allow 10-15 minutes for the covered walk to the mall; the Dubai Metro guide explains the cards and fares. The Dubai Mall guide shows how not to get lost inside, and the Fountain guide covers the evening.
Book the tower first, because its slot is fixed: Burj Khalifa tickets are issued for a set date and time and cannot be refunded or changed once issued. Then fit the aquarium around it. If the choice is between a higher view and the SKY upgrade, the Level 124 vs 148 guide covers it.
Is it worth it, and who should skip it?
For families with children under about ten, yes: it is cool, easy to walk and full of things to point at. For couples and groups of adults, the free panel is often enough, and the money goes further on a view or a meal. If aquariums are the draw, compare it with the Lost Chambers at Atlantis and with The Green Planet for a rainforest instead.
Skip the paid ticket if you only have an hour in the mall, if the day is meant to be outdoors and the weather is perfect, or if the budget is tight. For the rest of a family trip, see Dubai with kids. The 1-hour shared yacht tour from Dubai Marina, from $32 per person, welcomes children under adult supervision and makes a calmer outdoor change after an indoor day.

It opens at 10:00 AM and stays open into the evening. Closing time varies by day, with later closing at weekends, so check the official hours for your date.
Can I combine the aquarium with Burj Khalifa on the same day?

Is the Dubai Aquarium good for toddlers?
Young children usually enjoy the tunnel and the big panel, and very young children are free, though the cut-off age is set by the aquarium. It gets crowded at weekends and school holidays, so go on a weekday morning.
