For real snorkelling, drive about 130 km (1.5-2 hours) to Snoopy Island at Al Aqah in Fujairah; Dubai's public beaches are for swimming, not for seeing fish. The best months are October to April. Inside the city the clear-water option is the surface snorkel over the sunken city at Deep Dive Dubai, from about AED 400. This guide covers the sites, costs, gear and reef manners, and our jet ski ride for the sea off Jumeirah.

Where is the best place to snorkel near Dubai?
Snoopy Island at Al Aqah in Fujairah, about 130 km and 1.5-2 hours by road. A rocky islet just offshore gives reef fish, rays and sometimes turtles. Within Dubai there is no reef, but Deep Dive Dubai offers pool snorkelling from about AED 400.

Four places to get into the water
#1
Shark Island, Khor Fakkan
A short boat ride from the town takes snorkellers to a small island offshore, with reef fish and sometimes turtles. The sea state decides whether boats sail, so agree the price, the length of the trip and the gear before you board. The town's beach and promenade make a pleasant stop on the way back to Dubai.
#2
Al Mamzar Beach Park
A calm, sheltered bay with lifeguards and clean sand is the right place to try a mask for the first time, or to get children used to the water. Do not expect a reef: the bottom is sand and the fish are few. Check the park's entry fee and opening hours before you go.
#3
A lifeguarded public beach
Dubai's public beaches have lifeguards, flags and clean sand, and the sea is warm for most of the year. The water is often cloudy and the shoreline is shared with boats and jet skis, so swim only inside the marked zone and read the flags. Think of it as a swim, not a snorkel.
#4
The Jumeirah coast by jet ski
There is little to snorkel off Jumeirah, but the Burj Al Arab looks different from sea level. Our guided jet ski ride is from $79 per jet ski for 30 minutes, with an instructor, photos and videos, and no licence needed. It is the sea, not the reef.
Snorkelling near Dubai: the short answer
The best snorkelling near Dubai is at Snoopy Island, Al Aqah, in Fujairah: about 130 km and 1.5-2 hours by road, with a rocky islet just off the beach, reef fish, rays and sometimes turtles. Dubai's own beaches are for swimming. The water is often cloudy, the bottom is sand, and there is no reef to see. The best months are October to April, and a day out costs a few hundred dirhams per person for entry, gear and food, before the drive.
Inside Dubai there is one reliable clear-water option: the snorkel session over the sunken city at Deep Dive Dubai, from about AED 400 per person and open from age 6. It is a pool, not the sea, so it suits families and nervous swimmers more than people chasing fish. Prices are rounded from the operator's site and listings, so confirm before you go.
We do not run snorkelling trips; this is a guide for guests who ask. For the sea in Dubai itself we run a jet ski ride from $79 per jet ski, described in the last section. If diving rather than snorkelling is what you are weighing up, read scuba diving in Dubai.
Where to snorkel from Dubai
The choice is between a pool in the city, the sheltered water of a public beach and a day on the east coast. The table sorts them by what you will actually see.
| Place | From Dubai | What you see | Good for | Heads-up |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dubai public beaches (JBR, Kite Beach) | In the city | Sandy bottom, often cloudy water, few fish | Swimming and practising with a mask | Boats and jet skis nearby; stay inside the lifeguarded zone |
| Al Mamzar Beach Park | In the city | A sheltered bay, calm water, little marine life | Children and first-timers | Entry fee and opening hours; it is a park, not a reef |
| Deep Dive Dubai, Nad Al Sheba | In the city | A surface view of a sunken city in a 60 m pool | Families, ages 6 and up, clear water guaranteed | From about AED 400; book ahead |
| Snoopy Island, Al Aqah | About 130 km, 1.5-2 hours | A rocky islet just offshore: reef fish, rays, moray eels, sometimes turtles | A first real reef | Busy at weekends; take water shoes |
| Shark Island, Khor Fakkan | About 1.5-2 hours, then a boat | A small offshore island with reef fish | Boat-trip snorkelling | Swell can cancel the boat |
| Musandam, Oman, by dhow | A full day with a border crossing | Fjord-like inlets, clear water, fish | A longer day out with a boat | Take passports and check entry rules with the operator |
Distances are approximate and depend on traffic and the route. Fees and boat prices change, so confirm each before you go.
Musandam is its own day out; our Musandam dhow cruise guide covers the border and what the boats do. For the other places in the table, the wider east coast route shows what else fits into the day.
Snoopy Island: what to expect
Snoopy Island is a dark rocky islet just off Al Aqah beach, named for its resemblance to the cartoon dog lying down. It is a short swim from the shore or a short kayak, and the water around it holds reef fish, moray eels, rays and, now and then, turtles. It is the nearest thing to a reef day that visitors to Dubai can reach by road.
Most visitors go through a beach resort or dive centre on Al Aqah's shore, which charges for entry or a day package and rents masks, snorkels, fins and kayaks. A full-day package with access and a couple of activities has been listed at around AED 300 per person, but offers change, so ask for the full price before you set off. At weekends, arrive before about 10:00 AM, when the beach fills and the water gets busy.
By car it is about 130 km from central Dubai, and 1.5-2 hours each way depending on traffic and the route. A taxi for the round trip costs several hundred dirhams, and public transport to the island's door is slow and awkward, so a hire car or a shared transfer is the practical choice. If you want a second stop, our best day trips from Dubai guide sets the east coast beside Hatta and Jebel Jais.
Dubai itself: what the beaches are good for
Dubai's public beaches have clean sand, lifeguards and flags, but the sea floor is mostly sand, the water is often cloudy, and the shoreline is busy with boats and jet skis. Treat a mask and snorkel here as a way to practise and to get children used to the water, not as a reef trip.
Swim only in the lifeguarded zone, never in the lanes used by jet skis and boats, and read the flags. Our Dubai beach rules and safety guide covers the colours and zones, and the best beaches in Dubai lists where to swim.
Season, water temperature and visibility
You can snorkel in any month, but the best conditions are October to April, when the air is comfortable and the water is calm and clear on most days. In summer the water is bath-warm, the air is brutal and the east coast gets crowded at weekends, so go on a weekday and be in the water early.
| Months | East-coast sea (about) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| October and November | 26-30 °C | Warm water and cooler air: the best window |
| December to February | 22-24 °C | Cool but fine in a rash vest or shorty; clear days |
| March to May | 23-29 °C | Warming quickly and still comfortable; very good |
| June to September | 29-33 °C | Bath-warm sea, very hot air; go early, and plankton can cloud the water |
Approximate sea temperatures; visibility changes with swell and wind from day to day.
Gear, safety and reef manners
Snorkelling is easy, and most accidents come from tiredness, sun and ignoring the water. A few habits keep it that way:
- Fit the mask before you get wet. Press it to your face without the strap and breathe in; if it stays on, it fits. A mask that leaks spoils the whole trip.
- Wear a rash vest or thin wetsuit in winter, and a rash vest in summer to stop your back burning. Use sunscreen made for reefs, and put it on before you arrive.
- Take water shoes for rocky entries and sea urchins, and a towel and water for the beach.
- Use a buoyancy aid if you are a weak swimmer, and for children. Swim with a buddy, and tell someone ashore where you are.
- Keep out of boat lanes and stay close to the island; kayaks and boats share the bay.
- Look, do not touch. Do not stand on coral, collect shells or feed the fish.
- Check the sea and the wind before you enter. If the flag or the centre says no, the answer is no.
The sea without a reef: a jet ski off Jumeirah
If you will not drive to the east coast, the sea off Jumeirah is for riding rather than looking. The jet ski ride to the Burj Al Arab is from $79 per jet ski for 30 minutes, or $140 for a full hour that continues to Atlantis on the Palm. An instructor rides in front and stops at the Burj Al Arab for photos and videos, and two people share one jet ski at no extra cost. Every rider needs an original passport or Emirates ID; there is no hotel pickup, and full prepayment confirms the slot. See the jet ski guide for the rules.
Families with children aged 12 and over can take the donut ride, $149 per ride for up to 4 riders, from the same harbour. The Marina speedboat tour, from $45, is the easy way to see Ain Dubai, the Palm and the Burj Al Arab in 90 minutes. None of these includes snorkelling.
FAQ
Where is the best place to snorkel near Dubai?
Snoopy Island at Al Aqah in Fujairah, about 130 km and 1.5-2 hours by road. A rocky islet just offshore gives reef fish, rays and sometimes turtles. Within Dubai there is no reef, but Deep Dive Dubai offers pool snorkelling from about AED 400.
Can you snorkel in Dubai?
You can snorkel in the Deep Dive Dubai pool, from age 6, or wear a mask on a public beach. Dubai's beaches have cloudy water and a sandy bottom, so they are good for practice, not for sightseeing.
How much does it cost to snorkel at Snoopy Island?
Plan on a few hundred dirhams per person: entry or a day package at a beach resort, mask and fins hire if you need them, and food. A full-day package with access and a couple of activities has been listed at around AED 300. Add the drive or a taxi. Offers change, so confirm the price.
What is the best time of year to snorkel?
October to April. East-coast water is about 26-30 °C in October and November and about 22-24 °C from December to February, so a rash vest or shorty helps in winter. In summer go early on a weekday.
Is snorkelling safe for beginners and children?
Yes, with care. Use a buoyancy aid for children and weak swimmers, stay close to shore or the island, swim with a buddy and keep out of boat lanes. Deep Dive Dubai accepts snorkellers from age 6.
Do I need to book Snoopy Island in advance?
On weekdays you can usually turn up, but at weekends and on holidays book ahead with the resort or dive centre, and ask what is included. Deep Dive Dubai should be booked ahead.
What marine life can I see?
At Snoopy Island expect reef fish in numbers, moray eels, rays and sometimes turtles. Nothing is guaranteed, and the water is clearer on calm days. Dubai's public beaches have few fish.
Do you run snorkelling tours?
No. We run a jet ski ride from $79 per jet ski, a Marina speedboat tour from $45 and other water sports at Umm Suqeim harbour. For snorkelling, book directly with a resort or dive centre.
