What does JLT stand for and where is it?

Jumeirah Lakes Towers: about 80 towers in 26 lettered clusters around artificial lakes, next to Dubai Marina on the inland side of Sheikh Zayed Road. Two Red Line stations serve it, DMCC and Sobha Realty, and the Marina is a tram ride or a walk of about 10 minutes from DMCC.

This guide also answers:

  • Is JLT near the beach?
  • How do I get from JLT to the yacht pier?
  • Which Metro station is JLT?

Five places within easy reach of JLT

DMCC station and the tram #1
JLT side of Sheikh Zayed Road The Marina, JBR and Downtown without a taxi

DMCC station and the tram

DMCC is the station most JLT guests use, and the tram connects it to the Marina and JBR. The Red Line runs on to Downtown without a change, with fares of AED 3-7.5 by zone. Sobha Realty, the other station, can be nearer to some towers, so check the map. Station names carry sponsors and change, so use the S'hail app.

Marina Walk and the canal #2
Dubai Marina, a tram ride or about a 10-minute walk from DMCC Evening walks, a sit-down dinner with a view

Marina Walk and the canal

The promenade around the Marina canal, with moored yachts, the towers reflected in the water and a long row of restaurants. It costs more than JLT's cluster cafés and gives the view JLT lacks, so most guests eat in JLT on ordinary nights and come here for one good dinner. Go at dusk, when the lights come on.

JBR Beach and The Walk #3
JBR, a tram ride or a short taxi from JLT Sand and sea, an evening promenade

JBR Beach and The Walk

The nearest public beach for most JLT guests, with the towers of Jumeirah Beach Residence behind it and the Bluewaters footbridge at one end. It is a tram ride or a short taxi, not a walk, so plan it as an outing. Go in the morning or late afternoon from May to September, when the midday sun is harsh.

The yacht pier behind Al Majara Tower #4
Dubai Marina, about a 10-minute walk from DMCC Our shared yacht, speedboat and party cruises

The yacht pier behind Al Majara Tower

All three of our Marina cruises start at the pier behind Al Majara Tower, which makes JLT the cheapest base for them. The shared yacht hour checks in at Level P 20 minutes before departure, the speedboat 30 minutes before, and the party yacht boards at 8:30 PM. Yachts leave strictly on time.

Ain Dubai and Bluewaters, from the water #5
Bluewaters Island, next to JBR A landmark to photograph, not to ride

Ain Dubai and Bluewaters, from the water

Ain Dubai is the giant observation wheel on Bluewaters Island, and it is a landmark to look at from the beach or the water rather than a ride you can plan around. Our yacht and speedboat tours both stop in front of it for photographs from the water.

JLT in one minute: who should stay and eat here

JLT is the cheaper neighbour of Dubai Marina, and better value if you do not need the beach on your doorstep. Jumeirah Lakes Towers is about 80 towers in 26 lettered clusters of three, built around artificial lakes and a large park on the inland side of Sheikh Zayed Road. Each cluster has parking and a row of cafés, restaurants and shops at the foot of the towers, and two Red Line stations, DMCC and Sobha Realty, put you on the Metro and the tram.

It suits budget-conscious visitors who want the Marina's sights without its prices, long stays that benefit from a kitchen and a supermarket downstairs, and anyone who prefers quieter streets. It suits beach-first visitors less: the sea is a tram ride or a short taxi away, and JLT has lakes, not sand. For a sea-first stay, compare Dubai Marina vs JBR.

Be honest with yourself about the trade. JLT is residential and a little anonymous: tall towers, wide roads, and a lakeside that is pleasant to walk but is not a seafront. You get lower prices, more space and a very good choice of cheap food, and you give up the postcard view and the walk to the water. If that sounds right, JLT will save you money without costing you the Marina; if not, pay the premium and stay on the water.

How JLT is laid out: lakes, clusters and Metro stations

Most towers are 35-45 floors, with Almas Tower, the centrepiece, taller. The towers are mainly apartments, so you will often book a hotel apartment or a holiday-home flat, with a kitchen and a washing machine, rather than a hotel room. Check the walk to a station first: from some clusters it is 15-20 minutes, which from May to September means a taxi.

Where to eat in JLT: the cluster restaurants and what they cost

Eating is JLT's best argument. Every cluster has a waterfront row of cafés, restaurants and takeaway counters at the foot of the towers, serving Indian, Pakistani, Lebanese, Turkish, Filipino, Thai and international food, with supermarkets and bakeries in between. Prices are those of a residential district, usually well below Marina Walk, and the choice is wide enough to eat somewhere different every night of a week.

Walk the cluster nearest your tower and read the menu boards; the places with a queue at 8 PM are the ones to try. For a sit-down dinner with a view, take the tram to Marina Walk for one night, where the water, the yachts and the lights justify the higher bill. For breakfast, the cluster bakeries and cafés are usually the cheapest option in the whole Marina area.

From JLT to the Marina, the beach and Downtown

JLT's position is the point: the Marina is on foot or by tram, JBR beach is one more hop, and Downtown is on the Red Line without a change. Fares are AED 3-7.5 by zone on a Silver Nol card; our Dubai Metro guide explains the card and the stations.

Approximate times; rush hour on Sheikh Zayed Road slows taxis more than trains.

Rush hour is the weak point: at 6 PM a taxi from JLT to the Marina can take longer than the tram. For door-to-door airport journeys to this side of the city, see Dubai Airport to Dubai Marina.

Our Marina tours from JLT: yacht, speedboat and the 21+ party

All three of our Marina cruises leave from the same pier, about a 10-minute walk from DMCC station, so JLT is the cheapest base for them. The 1-hour shared yacht tour, from $32 per person, runs hourly past the Marina, JBR and Bluewaters with a photo stop in front of Ain Dubai. The 90-minute speedboat tour, from $45, goes further, to the Palm and the Burj Al Arab, and the yacht party is a 21+ night cruise at $99 with a live DJ and a BBQ.

All three need full prepayment. No hotel transfers; the nearest Metro station is DMCC.

Every guest needs an original passport or Emirates ID, and the boats leave on time, so a taxi from a far cluster should leave early. The exact walk and the parking options are in our guide to reaching the Marina yacht pier.

A day from JLT: breakfast, beach, boat and dinner

JLT works best as the quiet end of a busy day. This is the order we would suggest for a winter day, when the weather lets you stay outside; in summer, swap the beach for the mall and move everything outdoors to the evening.

  • Morning: breakfast at a cluster café, then a walk in the lakeside park before the sun climbs, or the tram to JBR Beach.
  • Midday: an air-conditioned break, in your flat or in a mall near the tram, and a late lunch from a cluster restaurant.
  • Late afternoon: the pier. The speedboat's 5 PM departure is the last of the day, and from October to mid-March the sun sets during that ride; our sunset cruise guide has the times by month.
  • Evening: dinner on Marina Walk or back in your cluster, then the tram home.

JLT, the Marina or JBR: who should stay where

The three districts sit within a few kilometres of each other, and the right one depends on how you spend the day.

Practical: heat, noise and what to check before you book

JLT is built for residents, not tourists, which is both its strength and its limit. Before you pay for a flat or a hotel apartment, check these:

  • The walk to the station. Some clusters are 15-20 minutes from a Metro station. In winter that is a pleasant walk; from May to September it is a taxi.
  • Highway or lake side. Rooms facing Sheikh Zayed Road have city views and traffic noise; lake-facing rooms are quieter.
  • Licence. A flat rented as a holiday home must be licensed by the Department of Economy and Tourism, so ask for the permit number.
  • Food near your cluster. Clusters vary, so check that the cuisine you want is within a short walk.
  • The heat. The lakeside rows are outdoors; from June to August most people walk between air-conditioned spots, and the nearest beach is a short ride away.

FAQ

What does JLT stand for and where is it?

Jumeirah Lakes Towers: about 80 towers in 26 lettered clusters around artificial lakes, next to Dubai Marina on the inland side of Sheikh Zayed Road. Two Red Line stations serve it, DMCC and Sobha Realty, and the Marina is a tram ride or a walk of about 10 minutes from DMCC.

Is JLT cheaper than Dubai Marina?

Usually yes. Hotel apartments, holiday homes and restaurants in JLT tend to cost less than on Marina Walk or in JBR, because JLT is a residential district without the waterfront premium. Prices swing by season, so compare live rates for your dates.

Is JLT near the beach?

Not within walking distance for most towers. JBR Beach is a tram ride or a short taxi, roughly 15-25 minutes. For a beach on your doorstep stay in JBR. JLT has lakes and a park, but no sea.

How do I get from JLT to the yacht pier?

Our shared yacht hour, speedboat and yacht party all leave from the pier behind Al Majara Tower in Dubai Marina. From DMCC station it is a tram stop, a short taxi or a walk of about 10 minutes. Check in 20 minutes before the yacht, 30 minutes before the speedboat, and by 8:30 PM for the party.

Is JLT good for restaurants?

Yes, for variety and value. Each cluster has a row of cafés and restaurants at the foot of the towers, covering Indian, Pakistani, Lebanese, Turkish, Filipino and international food at residential prices. For a view and the lights, take the tram to Marina Walk.

Is JLT quiet and safe at night?

Dubai is one of the safest big cities for visitors. JLT is a residential and office district, quiet once the cafés close, though towers facing Sheikh Zayed Road hear the traffic. The nightlife is in the Marina and JBR, a short taxi or tram ride away.

Which Metro station is JLT?

DMCC, formerly Jumeirah Lakes Towers, and Sobha Realty, formerly Dubai Marina. Both are on the Red Line and connect to the tram. Fares are AED 3-7.5 by zone on a Silver Nol card. Sponsor names change, so check the S'hail app for the current map.
