Pick IMG Worlds of Adventure for summer, rain and teenagers; pick Motiongate for children aged 3-12 between November and March. IMG is one air-conditioned dome of about 1.5 million square feet; Motiongate is a partly outdoor film park inside Dubai Parks and Resorts. They sit on opposite sides of the city, so you cannot do both in a day. This guide compares zones, ages, heat, tickets and travel time, and says when a desert evening makes the better second day.

Which is better, IMG Worlds or Motiongate?
Neither wins outright. IMG Worlds is fully indoors and suits teenagers, summer visits and rain; Motiongate suits children aged about 3-12 and is best from November to March. Allow one full day, roughly 6-8 hours, for either, and compare ticket prices on the official sites for your date.

Around the choice: the neighbours and the second day
#1
Motiongate: the pick for ages 3-12
Four zones built around films: DreamWorks, Columbia Pictures, Lionsgate and Smurfs Village. The photo shows the Smurfs Village Express family coaster running over the mushroom houses, which tells you the tone: bright, gentle in places and aimed at families. Go from November to March, when the walks between zones are comfortable, and check each ride's height limit before you queue.
#2
Legoland Dubai: the park next door for under-10s
If your children are younger than Motiongate's sweet spot, Legoland Dubai shares the same complex and is built for the 2-12 age range, with a separate water park for hot days. It is the calmer choice: fewer big thrills, more things to touch and build. Our guide to Legoland covers rides and ages in detail, and the Dubai Parks guide compares all three parks on that site.
#3
Ski Dubai: the other indoor option
If the issue is heat rather than rides, the indoor snow park at Mall of the Emirates is a shorter escape, kept below freezing, with a chairlift, a slope and sledging. It is a half day, not a full one, and it sits next to the Red Line station, so it needs no taxi. It is a useful add-on to an IMG Worlds day only if you have a spare afternoon.
#4
Aquaventure: water instead of rides in July and August
In the hottest months an outdoor theme park is a poor trade, and a water park gives the same day out with the heat working for you. Aquaventure on the Palm is the biggest in Dubai, and our ranking of the water parks compares it with Wild Wadi and the rest. Go at opening, take shade breaks and keep sunscreen on, because the sun on the water is strong.
#5
A desert evening on a different day
A park day is a full day of walking, so give the desert its own day. Our full-day safari from $45 collects you from the hotel in an air-conditioned 4x4, runs dune bashing, sandboarding and a camel ride through sunset, then finishes at the camp with a BBQ buffet and a fire show. Nobody walks far, and it pays on the day with no prepayment.
IMG Worlds or Motiongate: the short answer
Choose IMG Worlds of Adventure if it is summer, if heat or rain would ruin an outdoor day, or if the group is mostly teenagers and adults who want Marvel and dinosaur coasters. Choose Motiongate if your children are about 3-12, you are visiting between November and March, and they would rather meet Shrek and the Smurfs than ride the biggest coaster in the building.
The practical difference is the roof. IMG Worlds is a single air-conditioned dome of about 1.5 million square feet, so the weather never changes the plan. Motiongate is part of Dubai Parks and Resorts, a complex on the Jebel Ali side of the city with parts under cover and parts in the open, so the month matters. The two parks are on opposite sides of Dubai, which means one park per day, and neither is on the Metro.
Ticket prices change with the date, the age band and the package, so we do not print one here. Expect a few hundred dirhams per adult for a one-day ticket at either park, more for fast-track options and at weekends, and compare the two official sites for your own dates before you book.
Side by side
This is the whole decision on one screen. Both parks are a full day, both have height limits on the bigger rides, and neither is cheap, so the useful differences are the setting, the zones and the months.
| IMG Worlds of Adventure | Motiongate Dubai | |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | Fully indoors, under one air-conditioned dome | Partly outdoors, partly under cover; the walks between zones are in the open |
| Zones | Marvel, Cartoon Network, Lost Valley (dinosaurs), IMG Boulevard | DreamWorks, Columbia Pictures, Lionsgate, Smurfs Village |
| Best ages | Teenagers and adults; Cartoon Network zone for younger children | Children about 3-12 and their parents; Lionsgate zone for teenagers |
| Best months | All year; the better choice from May to September | November to March; in summer, arrive at opening |
| Where | Dubailand, a few minutes from Global Village by taxi | Dubai Parks and Resorts, Jebel Ali side, beside Legoland Dubai |
| Time to allow | A full day | A full day |
| Weak point | No daylight or fresh air; the biggest rides have height limits | Hot and tiring in the open from May to September |
Zones as listed by the parks; rides, opening days and prices change, so check the official sites before you book.
If Legoland and the water parks are also on your list, which Dubai Parks and Resorts park to choose compares all the parks on the Jebel Ali site, and our detailed guides to IMG Worlds of Adventure and Motiongate cover each park ride by ride.
Indoor or outdoor: what the heat does to a park day
Dubai's afternoon highs are around 40°C in July and August, so the roof decides the day. At IMG Worlds the queues, the rides and the walkways are all inside, so you can arrive at noon in August and still enjoy it. Bring a light layer, because the air-conditioning feels cold after a hot taxi.
Motiongate is kinder in winter. From November to March the days are mild and the open-air walks are a pleasure; in April, May and October it is warm but manageable in the morning. From June to September, go the minute the gates open, ride the big attractions before lunch and use the air-conditioned indoor rides and shows for the middle of the day.
Either way, weekends and school holidays are the busiest, and a weekday is a better bet if you have the choice. The guide to Dubai in summer lists the other cool-air options for the hottest months.
Ages: who each park suits
IMG Worlds splits the audience by zone. Cartoon Network is the gentle end, with characters such as Ben 10 and The Powerpuff Girls. Marvel, with Spider-Man, the Hulk and the Avengers, and Lost Valley, with its dinosaurs and the Predator roller coaster, are for older children and teenagers. IMG Boulevard holds shops, restaurants and a Haunted Hotel scare attraction, which is not for small children.
Motiongate is gentler across the board. DreamWorks brings Shrek, Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda to the 3-10 age range, Smurfs Village suits toddlers and pre-schoolers, and the Lionsgate zone, themed on The Hunger Games, is the one that appeals to teenagers. Columbia Pictures sits in between, with film-themed rides for families.
- Under 3: neither park is built for babies. A pushchair works, but the rides are mostly out, so see our baby and toddler guide for better options.
- Ages 3-7: Motiongate's DreamWorks and Smurfs zones, or Legoland Dubai next door.
- Ages 8-12: either park; choose on the weather and on which characters they know.
- Teenagers: IMG Worlds first, Motiongate's Lionsgate zone second.
- Height and age limits are set ride by ride and the biggest coasters ask for more than the family rides, so measure children before the visit and check the lists on the official sites.
Tickets, opening days and how long to allow
Buy online for a fixed date, because the one-day ticket price depends on the date and the age band, and fast-track options cost more again. Fast-track only pays on weekends and school holidays, when the main rides run long queues.
Opening days and hours change with the season, and the parks at Dubai Parks and Resorts do not always open every day of the week, so check the calendar before you build anything else around the date. The complex also sells passes that cover more than one park; ask on the official site if you are staying two or three days.
Allow a full day for either park, from opening until the evening. Eat early or late to avoid the lunch rush, take the biggest rides first, and keep the shows and gentler zones for the afternoon, when children tire.
Getting there
Neither park is on a Metro line, so a taxi or a ride-hailing car is the easy way, and an air-conditioned car also protects you from the heat on the way. IMG Worlds is about 25-40 minutes by taxi from Downtown or the Marina, around AED 60-90 each way, similar to Global Village next to it. Motiongate is about 20-30 minutes from the Marina and 35-50 from Downtown or Deira, depending on traffic.
Both fares depend on traffic and time of day, so check the app price before you go. Our taxi and Careem guide explains the fares, and how to get around Dubai shows where public transport stops being useful. Book the return ride in the app before the closing crowd leaves.
Build the week around it: one park day, one desert day
A park day uses up the family's energy, so keep it to one and balance it with something that takes less walking. The full-day desert safari, from $45 per person, picks you up from your hotel in Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman in an air-conditioned 4x4. It covers 30-45 minutes of dune bashing, sandboarding, a camel ride, a BBQ buffet and a fire show, and you pay on the day with no prepayment. It is not recommended for infants under 3, so read the desert safari with kids guide first.
For a gentler second day, the shared Marina yacht is one hour from $32 per person, with children welcome under adult supervision. The rest of the family plan is in best things to do in Dubai with kids and the family itinerary.
FAQ
Which is better, IMG Worlds or Motiongate?
Neither wins outright. IMG Worlds is fully indoors and suits teenagers, summer visits and rain; Motiongate suits children aged about 3-12 and is best from November to March. Allow one full day, roughly 6-8 hours, for either, and compare ticket prices on the official sites for your date.
Can you do IMG Worlds and Motiongate in one day?
No. They are on opposite sides of Dubai, 25-50 minutes apart from the city centre by taxi, and each is a full day of rides. Choose one per day, or take a multi-day pass if you want both.
Is IMG Worlds of Adventure fully indoors?
Yes. It is one enclosed dome of about 1.5 million square feet, so queues, rides and walkways are all air-conditioned. That makes it the better theme park for June to September, though you may want a light layer.
Is Motiongate too hot in summer?
It is hot from about May to September, because the walks between zones are in the open and afternoon highs reach about 40°C. Arrive at opening, ride the main attractions before lunch and use the indoor shows and rides at midday. November to March is far easier.
Which park is better for toddlers and young children?
Motiongate, specifically the Smurfs Village and DreamWorks zones, or Legoland Dubai next door, which is built for ages 2-12. IMG Worlds has a gentle Cartoon Network zone but is aimed at older children and teenagers.
Are IMG Worlds and Motiongate on the Metro?
No. Take a taxi or a ride-hailing car: IMG Worlds is about 25-40 minutes from Downtown or the Marina, Motiongate about 20-30 minutes from the Marina and 35-50 from Downtown, depending on traffic.
