Dubai has a real nightlife, and it runs on two rules: 21+ and licensed venues. Alcohol is served in hotel bars, licensed restaurants, clubs and on licensed boats, never in public, and an original ID is checked at the door. Around that sit four very different evenings: the yacht party that leaves the Marina at 9 PM with a live DJ and a BBQ for $99, the rooftops and waterfront of the Marina and JBR, the free Fountain shows in Downtown from 6 PM, and the desert camp with dinner and a fire show. This guide covers each, with dress codes, timings and how to get home.

Tour on this route: Dubai Marina Yacht Party — $99 per person, 4 hours (9 pm-1 am).
What is the nightlife like in Dubai for tourists?
Lively and legal inside licensed venues: hotel bars and clubs, licensed restaurants, beach clubs and licensed boats, all 21+ with ID. The four evenings to plan for a first visit are the $99 yacht party from Dubai Marina (9 PM-1 AM daily), the Marina and JBR waterfront with its rooftops, the free Dubai Fountain shows every 30 minutes from 6 PM, and the desert camp dinner and shows on the full-day safari.

Five Dubai nights, ranked for a first visit
#1
The Marina yacht party
A floating nightclub with 25-45 guests, a live DJ playing house, R&B and chart hits, a live BBQ and unlimited soft drinks, cruising past Ain Dubai, JBR, the Palm lagoon and Burj Al Arab. Boarding is at 8:30 PM at the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower; the yacht leaves at 9:00 PM sharp and is back around 1:00 AM. Original ID, smart casual, shoes off.
#2
Downtown Fountain night
The Dubai Fountain plays on Burj Lake every half hour through the evening, free, with Burj Khalifa lit above it. Watch one show from the promenade, another from a terrace at Souk Al Bahar, then walk the Opera district. It costs nothing, suits every age, and needs only the metro to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall and the 10-15 minute Metro Link walk.
#3
Marina Walk, JBR and the rooftops
The 7 km Marina Walk loop, The Walk at JBR and the footbridge to Bluewaters are the city's evening promenade, with the hotel rooftops and beach bars along it holding the licences. Ain Dubai glows across the water as the backdrop to every photo. Start with the sunset hour on the shared yacht for $32 and let the evening run from there.
#4
The desert camp evening
The night out for anyone under 21, families, and anyone who would rather have a fire show than a DJ. The full-day safari ends at Al Khayma with a BBQ buffet, henna, a shisha station, the fire show, Tanoura and belly dance in air-conditioned tents, then the 4x4 drives you back to the hotel late in the evening. From $45, pickup included, no prepayment.
#5
A private evening charter
Thirty boats from 31 to 150 ft, from AED 400 per hour with captain, crew, fuel, water, ice and soft drinks included. A private charter is the one place in Dubai where you bring your own bottle: alcohol is allowed on board for guests of legal drinking age, 21+. For a group of 17 on a 53 ft yacht the sunset two hours works out at about AED 120 a head.
The short answer: real nightlife, licensed and 21+
Dubai has a full nightlife, and it happens inside licensed venues: hotel bars and clubs, licensed restaurants, beach clubs, and licensed boats. The drinking age is 21, an original ID or passport is checked, drinking in public places is illegal and so is being drunk in public. Inside those lines the city stays up late every night of the week.
For a first visit there are four evenings worth planning around. The Dubai Marina yacht party is the night most of our guests book: $99, 9 PM to 1 AM, a live DJ, a live BBQ and the skyline from the water. The Marina and JBR waterfront is the evening promenade with the rooftops above it. Downtown has the free Fountain shows every 30 minutes from about 6 PM. And the desert camp is the night out for families, under-21s and anyone who would rather sit under stars than under a DJ booth.
One honest note on what this guide is not: we run the water and the desert, not the clubs, so you will find no bar list here. What you will find are the rules that apply everywhere, the timings that decide a good night, and the four evenings in enough detail to choose.
The rules: 21+, ID, licensed venues, no drinking in public
Nightlife in Dubai is easy as long as you know six things before the first drink.
- The drinking age is 21, and it is checked. Carry an original passport or Emirates ID; the yacht party turns away a photo of a passport, and so do many doors.
- Alcohol only in licensed venues: hotels, licensed restaurants, bars, clubs and licensed boats. No drinking on the beach, on Marina Walk, in a park or in a taxi, and no walking around with an open bottle.
- Do not be drunk in public. The taxi home and the hotel lobby are public. The full rules are in alcohol laws in Dubai for tourists.
- Sharjah is dry. If your hotel is in Sharjah, the evening happens in Dubai; the return taxi runs AED 40-80 plus a small inter-emirate surcharge, and the tours with pickup collect you there anyway.
- Dress smart casual as the default: it is the safe standard for hotel bars and the written rule for the yacht party, where swimwear is not permitted for the evening. What to wear where is in the yacht party dress code and rules.
- Behave as if a camera is watching, because one usually is: no swearing, no rude gestures in traffic or online, no photos of strangers. During Ramadan live music and loud entertainment pause and alcohol in hotels is usually served from the evening only; the dates move about 11 days earlier each year, so check them for your trip.
The yacht party at 9 PM: how the night runs
Boarding is at 8:30 PM at the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower, Dubai Marina; the yacht leaves at 9:00 PM sharp and does not wait. On board are 25-45 guests, an international crowd that runs close to 50/50, a live DJ playing house, R&B and chart hits, a live BBQ from the grill (meat, chicken, sliders, salads and desserts) and unlimited water, soft drinks and selected juices. There are no assigned seats; you move between the decks, and there is a toilet and changing facilities on board.
The route is the whole coastline at night: out of the Marina between the towers, past Bluewaters with Ain Dubai lit up, along JBR, through Dubai Harbour, around the lagoon of Palm Jumeirah to the Burj Al Arab photo stop and back, finishing around 1:00 AM. Four hours is long enough that the party has phases: the skyline hour, the dinner, the dancing, the slow return.
The rules are firm because the crowd depends on them. Strictly 21+, with an original ID or passport at the pier. Smart casual or party wear, never swimwear. No outside food or drink. Shoes come off on the boat, so bring socks. The cruise is subject to sea conditions and safety comes first. The ticket is $99, paid in full in advance because the nights sell out, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure. The complete guide is Dubai Marina yacht party: the $99 night on the water.
Getting there is simple: the Red Line to DMCC station (the Marina/JLT stop) and a short taxi, tram ride or walk, or a taxi straight to Al Majara Tower; the exact pier location is sent when you book. Turn up at 8:30 PM, not 8:55 PM: no refunds are given for latecomers. Step-by-step directions are in how to get to the yacht pier.
Dubai Marina, JBR and Bluewaters after dark
The Marina is where Dubai walks in the evening. The Marina Walk is a 7 km loop around the canal past Marina Mall, Pier 7 and the twisted Cayan Tower, all lit, with restaurants and cafés at water level and the hotel rooftops holding the licences above. Ten to twenty minutes on foot, or two tram stops, puts you on The Walk at JBR and The Beach, then over the footbridge to Bluewaters Island, where Ain Dubai lights up over the water; it is the city's best evening landmark to photograph, and the rooftop bars beneath it trade on the view.
The best way to start a Marina evening is on the water. The shared 1-hour yacht tour leaves hourly from the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower (Level P), from $32, and the sunset departure is the one to book: sunset falls at about 5:30 PM in December and 7:10 PM in June, so check the time for your month, check in 20 minutes early and pay in advance, because the sunset slots sell out first. An hour later you are back on Marina Walk with the lights on and the whole evening ahead.
Families and under-21s belong here as much as anyone: the promenade, the beach and the tram are for everyone, and the age rule only applies at the bar.
Downtown at night: the Fountain, Souk Al Bahar and the Canal
Downtown's evening is free and starts at about 6 PM, when the Dubai Fountain begins its shows on Burj Lake, every 30 minutes through the evening (check the current schedule before you go), with Burj Khalifa lit above it. Watch one from the promenade in front of Dubai Mall, another from a terrace at Souk Al Bahar, then walk around the lake to Burj Park, the classic free view, and the Dubai Opera district beyond it. Burj Khalifa's At the Top runs into the evening too, and the sunset slots cost more than the daytime ones.
Ten minutes south, the Dubai Water Canal has the mechanical waterfall under the Sheikh Zayed Road bridge, lit at night, and the Business Bay promenade running beside it, quieter than the Fountain and just as photogenic.
Getting there: the Red Line to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station and the air-conditioned Metro Link bridge, a 10-15 minute walk with travelators. At Fountain time the roads around the Dubai Mall car parks lock up, and Friday and Saturday evenings are the worst, so arrive by metro and leave by metro or walk to a taxi rank away from the mall.
The desert at night: the camp instead of the club
The other great Dubai night has no bar at all. The full-day desert safari reaches the Lahbab Red Dunes in the afternoon, runs the dune bashing, sandboarding and camel ride, watches the sunset from the sand, and then hands the evening to Al Khayma camp: a BBQ buffet with vegetarian and gluten-free dishes, unlimited water, soft drinks, tea and Arabic coffee, henna, a shisha station, the fire show, Tanoura and belly dance, all in air-conditioned tents. The 4x4 drives you back to your hotel late in the evening.
It is the night out for families, for under-21s who cannot board the party, and for anyone who wants a full evening without a dress code or a door. From $45 per person, or $65 with the 30-minute quad bike ride; pickup and drop-off at your hotel in Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman are included, and there is no prepayment: you agree the date on WhatsApp and pay on the day. In winter bring a light jacket for the camp, and during Ramadan expect the entertainment to be limited or modified. More night ideas, from Al Seef on the Creek to Global Village in season, are in the best things to do in Dubai at night.
A boat of your own: private evening charters
For a group, a birthday or a night you want to control, a private yacht charter replaces the club. Thirty boats from 31 to 150 ft leave from the Marina and Dubai Harbour from AED 400 per hour, with captain, crew, fuel, water, ice and soft drinks included, and you choose the music, the guests and the route. This is also the one place in Dubai where you bring your own drinks: alcohol is allowed on board for guests of legal drinking age, 21+, along with dry food such as pizza, sandwiches and snacks on disposable plates. Live BBQ with a chef, Arabic and Lebanese platters, seafood or a cake are added in advance for a fee; ask on WhatsApp.
The maths against the party ticket is worth doing. The $99 party is about AED 363 per head. The 53 ft Daphne takes 17 guests at AED 1,000 per hour with a 2-hour minimum: AED 2,000, about AED 118 a head for the sunset two hours. The 62 ft Libra takes 24 at AED 1,150 per hour: AED 2,300 for two hours, AED 96 a head. The 90 ft X8 houseboat takes 60 guests at AED 2,800 per hour with a 3-hour minimum: AED 8,400, AED 140 a head with a whole floating venue to yourselves. The full comparison is in yacht party vs private charter.
Sunset is the most requested slot, so book it first; the Coast Guard closes swimming around 7 PM in summer and 5 PM in winter, and after that the boat is a lit terrace on the water. Send guests, hours, date and occasion on WhatsApp, we confirm the yacht with the marina and the total before any payment, every guest keeps a passport or Emirates ID copy on their phone, a security pre-authorisation of AED 2,000-15,000 is held on a card at check-in and released after the trip, shoes come off, and there is no smoking inside.
Getting home: metro hours, taxis and the late-night maths
The metro runs from about 5 AM until midnight or 1 AM depending on the day, so a Downtown evening ends on the train and a Marina evening can too. After the yacht party docks around 1 AM, it is a taxi: RTA taxis are metered (flag fall about AED 5, about AED 2 per km) and queue outside the Marina hotels, and Careem, Uber and Hala all work at that hour. Budget about AED 50-70 from the Marina to Downtown, AED 35-50 to the Palm, and AED 80-110 to the airport area, more on Friday and Saturday nights when Sheikh Zayed Road is slow.
Two late-night habits keep the evening clean. Women alone can ask for a pink-roofed ladies' taxi with a woman driver. And remember that the ride and the lobby are public: the law against being drunk in public applies at 1 AM on the Marina as much as at noon in a mall, so the last hour of the party is the one to drink water, which is unlimited on board.
If you are building a whole trip around evenings, the yacht party pairs naturally with a desert night the day before or after, and the two are the first things we suggest to anyone who asks where Dubai's nightlife actually is.
FAQ
What is the nightlife like in Dubai for tourists?
Lively and legal inside licensed venues: hotel bars and clubs, licensed restaurants, beach clubs and licensed boats, all 21+ with ID. The four evenings to plan for a first visit are the $99 yacht party from Dubai Marina (9 PM-1 AM daily), the Marina and JBR waterfront with its rooftops, the free Dubai Fountain shows every 30 minutes from 6 PM, and the desert camp dinner and shows on the full-day safari.
Can tourists drink alcohol in Dubai?
Yes, at 21 and over, in licensed venues only: hotels, licensed restaurants, bars, clubs and licensed boats. Drinking in public places is illegal, being drunk in public is an offence, and Sharjah next door is dry. Carry an original passport or Emirates ID; doors and the yacht party check it and do not accept photos.
What time does the Dubai Marina yacht party start?
Boarding is at 8:30 PM at the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower, Dubai Marina, and the yacht leaves at 9:00 PM sharp; it does not wait for latecomers and no refunds are given for a missed departure. The cruise returns around 1:00 AM. It runs daily, costs $99 per person, is strictly 21+ and is paid in full in advance.
What is the dress code for nightlife in Dubai?
Smart casual is the safe default for hotel bars and licensed restaurants, and it is the written rule for the yacht party: smart casual or party wear, no swimwear in the evening, and shoes off on board, so bring socks. Away from the venues, shoulders and knees covered is the polite standard in malls and Old Dubai; swimwear stays on beaches and at pools.
Is there nightlife in Dubai for under-21s?
Plenty, without the bar. The Dubai Fountain shows from 6 PM are free and every 30 minutes, Marina Walk, JBR and the Bluewaters footbridge stay busy until late, and the desert safari ends the evening at Al Khayma camp with dinner, a fire show and dancing for $45 with hotel pickup. The shared 1-hour yacht tour welcomes all ages; the yacht party is strictly 21+.
Can I bring my own drinks on a yacht in Dubai?
On a private charter, yes: alcohol is allowed on board for guests of legal drinking age, 21+, along with dry food such as pizza, sandwiches and snacks on disposable plates; no BYO BBQ meat. On the yacht party and the shared 1-hour tour no outside food or drink is allowed; the party ticket includes the live BBQ, unlimited water, soft drinks and selected juices.
How do I get home after the yacht party at 1 AM?
By taxi: the metro may have stopped by then (it runs until midnight or 1 AM depending on the day). RTA taxis wait outside the Marina hotels and Careem, Uber and Hala work at that hour; budget about AED 50-70 to Downtown, AED 35-50 to the Palm. Women alone can request a pink-roofed ladies' taxi. Being drunk in public applies in the taxi and the lobby, so finish the night on water.
