Five areas to stay in Abu Dhabi
#1
The Corniche
Visit Abu Dhabi lists the Corniche among the best areas to stay. Corniche Beach is 2 km long, with a free public section at Gate 4 and family sections at AED 10 per adult, and Qasr Al Watan is nearby. Search hotels by map and check the walk to the sea before you book. Our Corniche guide covers the seafront.
#2
Saadiyat Island
Visit Abu Dhabi lists the St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort and Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort as family-friendly, and Gulf News adds Saadiyat Rotana Resort and Villas. The Louvre and two other museums are within walking distance of each other, and the city centre is about 15 to 20 minutes away by car. Read our Saadiyat Island guide.
#3
Yas Island
Visit Abu Dhabi's Yas Island guide lists the W Abu Dhabi, The WB Abu Dhabi, Hilton Yas Island and Radisson Blu Hotel Abu Dhabi. Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, Yas Waterworld, SeaWorld, Yas Mall and the Yas Marina Circuit are all on the island. Yas is separate from the old centre, so budget a ride for sights elsewhere. See our Yas Island guide.
#4
Al Maryah Island and Al Zahiyah
Gulf News lists the Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi and Rosewood Abu Dhabi on Al Maryah Island, where The Galleria mall is. Visit Abu Dhabi says Al Zahiyah, the former Tourist Club Area, is directly connected to Al Maryah and has Le Méridien, Sheraton, Beach Rotana and Royal Rose hotels, plus serviced apartments.
#5
Al Reem Island
Visit Abu Dhabi lists Al Reem Island among its best areas to stay, and Al Zahiyah is a 5 to 10 minute drive from it. Reem Mall is here, and Gulf News says Snow Abu Dhabi is inside it, so it suits indoor days in summer. Check the hotel and apartment options on your dates.
Where to stay in Abu Dhabi: the short answer
For a first visit, stay near the Corniche or in Al Zahiyah; for museums and a beach, choose Saadiyat; for the theme parks and the Grand Prix, choose Yas. Visit Abu Dhabi lists nine areas as the best places to stay: Saadiyat Island, Al Reem Island, Al Raha, the Corniche, Al Reef, Khalidiya, Al Maryah Island, and Al Zahiyah with Al Markaziyah. It counts over 230 hotels and resorts, with rooms starting from as little as $30 a night.
The sights are spread out, and no area has everything on foot. The one walkable cluster is the three older museums on Saadiyat, which Visit Abu Dhabi calls walking distance from each other. Everywhere else you will use taxis or the free shuttle bus, so pick the area that holds the thing you will visit most often. Our getting around guide has fares and routes.
Which area suits which trip
Match your reason for the trip to the area, then read the trade-off before you book.
| Your trip | Best area | Why | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| First visit, short stay | Corniche or Al Zahiyah | Central, near the sea and Qasr Al Watan | The mosque, Saadiyat and Yas are each a separate ride |
| Museums and a beach resort | Saadiyat Island | The Louvre and other museums; a long beach | No city centre; evenings are quiet |
| Theme parks or the Grand Prix | Yas Island | Four parks, a mall and the circuit on one island | Far from the old centre; busy on race weekend |
| Shopping and dining | Al Maryah Island | The Galleria; the Four Seasons and Rosewood hotels | Not a beach area |
| Indoor days in summer | Al Reem Island | Reem Mall and Snow Abu Dhabi; close to Al Zahiyah | Few sights of its own |
| One day only | Stay in Dubai | A tour collects you at your hotel | A 9-hour day |
Saadiyat or Yas: the two resort islands
The two islands suit different holidays. Saadiyat is about culture and sand: the Louvre, the Zayed National Museum and the Natural History Museum are there, and a Guggenheim museum is due to open on 11 December 2026. Yas is about rides and events, with four theme parks, Yas Mall, Yas Bay and the Yas Marina Circuit, home of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Beach access changes the price. The former public beach on Saadiyat is now Kai Beach, managed by Saadiyat Beach Club, and Visit Abu Dhabi lists adult entry at AED 125 on weekdays and AED 200 at weekends. Yas Beach costs AED 80 from Monday to Thursday and AED 150 at weekends for non-guests, but it is free for guests of selected Yas Island hotels. Ask your hotel whether beach access is included before you book; our beaches guide has the full fee list.
Both islands are a taxi ride from the Corniche and from each other. Abu Dhabi runs a free shuttle bus to its main attractions, our getting around guide lists the routes, and our park guides mention a free Yas Express shuttle for ticket holders. For the race, see the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix guide and book early.
Staying central: Corniche, Al Zahiyah and Al Maryah
The centre is the practical choice if you will do many short trips. Al Zahiyah is a historic district with long-running, no-frills restaurants, and Visit Abu Dhabi puts it within a 5 to 10 minute drive of the Corniche and Al Reem Island. It has a wide range of hotels and serviced apartments.
Al Maryah Island is the more upscale choice. The Galleria offers shopping and dining, and the Four Seasons and Rosewood hotels there suit a short city break. If you prefer a waterfront outside the centre, Gulf News lists The Abu Dhabi EDITION in Al Bateen, where Al Bateen Beach is free, according to Visit Abu Dhabi.
The honest downside of the centre is the beach: the Corniche is a city beach with a promenade, not a resort beach. For a plan that uses a central base, see our 2-day Abu Dhabi itinerary.
Prices and when to book
Visit Abu Dhabi gives $30 a night as the lowest starting price, but that is a city-wide minimum, not a figure for any area. Resort islands usually cost more. Visit Abu Dhabi lists April to May as the cheapest time to visit and December as the best month for weather, so expect to pay more in the cool season and around race weekend in early December. From May to September it is hot, with 28 to 40 degrees, so plan indoor days if you travel then.
We do not quote room rates by area, because they change by date and season. Compare two or three areas on your own dates, check what the rate includes (beach, breakfast, shuttle) and ask about parking if you will drive.
Or stay in Dubai and visit for a day
For a week in the UAE, many visitors keep one base in Dubai and see Abu Dhabi on a day trip; our guide to Dubai or Abu Dhabi: where to stay weighs the two. Our Abu Dhabi city tour takes 9 hours from an 8:00 AM hotel pickup in Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman, and costs from $45 per person shared or $245 for a private car for up to 7 guests.
The tour does not pick up from hotels in Abu Dhabi, so it is a Dubai-side option. If you stay in Abu Dhabi for two or more nights, plan your days yourself with the guides linked above.
