How long is the Abu Dhabi Corniche?

Visit Abu Dhabi describes it as eight kilometres of manicured waterfront, with Corniche Beach making up 2 km of it. At a relaxed walking pace the full length takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours one way, so most visitors walk or ride a section.

This guide also answers:

  • Is the Abu Dhabi Corniche free?
  • Can I rent a bike on the Corniche?
  • What are Marina Mall's opening hours?

Five things to do on the Corniche

Walk or cycle the promenade #1
The full 8 km waterfront, with separate cycle and pedestrian paths A free, flat walk in the cooler months

Walk or cycle the promenade

Visit Abu Dhabi describes the Corniche as eight kilometres of manicured waterfront with children's play areas, cafes and restaurants, and separate paths for walkers and cyclists. At a relaxed pace the full length is roughly a 1.5 to 2 hour walk one way, so a section is enough for most people. Go in the early morning or late afternoon.

Corniche Beach #2
A 2 km beach in three sections, with Blue Flag status A swim with the skyline in view

Corniche Beach

The public section, Al Sahil at Gate 4, is free and suits singles and larger groups. Gates 2 and 3 are the family sections, with a quiet zone at Gate 2, and Visit Abu Dhabi lists the paid family beach at AED 10 per adult and AED 5 per child up to 12. There are showers, changing rooms and cabanas, and a lifeguard is on duty until sunset.

Marina Mall and the Breakwater #3
Marina Mall Island, at the Breakwater end of the Corniche A cool break, a meal and the harbour views

Marina Mall and the Breakwater

Marina Mall stands on Marina Mall Island at the Breakwater. Visit Abu Dhabi places Lulu Island and one of the world's tallest flagpoles beside it. The mall's own site lists hours of 10 AM to 10 PM from Sunday to Thursday and 10 AM to midnight on Friday and Saturday, with parking for up to 4,000 cars. It is the natural place to escape the afternoon heat.

Heritage Village #4
On the Breakwater, close to Marina Mall Crafts, a souq and a short look at older Abu Dhabi

Heritage Village

A recreated village with a souq, a mosque and a camp, where artisans work in pottery, glass, metal and fabric. The National reports that it is free to enter and about a 10-minute walk from Marina Mall. It is also a stop on our Abu Dhabi city tour, and our separate guide covers hours and what to see.

Sunset and the Emirates Palace end #5
The western Corniche, facing north-west across the water Golden-hour photos and an evening walk

Sunset and the Emirates Palace end

Visit Abu Dhabi says Corniche Beach faces north-west and calls sunset a great time for photos, with the ADNOC headquarters tower visible against the evening light. Emirates Palace is the landmark of the western Corniche. Our tour passes it on the Corniche drive with a photo stop, but it is a daytime loop, so a sunset walk needs a separate evening.

Abu Dhabi Corniche: the short answer

The Corniche is about eight kilometres of waterfront in central Abu Dhabi, and walking it is free. Visit Abu Dhabi lists separate cycle and pedestrian paths, children's play areas, cafes and restaurants, and Corniche Beach, a 2 km beach with Blue Flag status. The public section of the beach is free, and the family sections cost AED 10 per adult and AED 5 per child up to 12. Visit Abu Dhabi also reports more than 1,100 free parking spaces within a five-minute walk of the beach.

It is a place to spend two or three hours, not a day. Pair a morning swim or ride with Marina Mall and the Breakwater, or come late for the sunset. The sections below give prices, hours and the points where visitors are caught out, such as bike hire that may not be running and the heat in the middle of the day.

The beach: which section to use

Corniche Beach is divided into three sections. The free public one at Al Sahil, Gate 4, is for singles and larger groups. Gates 2 and 3 are recommended for families and are fenced from view, and Gate 2 has a quiet zone. Visit Abu Dhabi says you can swim, and that a lifeguard is on duty until sunset, so swim before the light goes.

Visit Abu Dhabi gives the paid family beach as AED 10 per adult and AED 5 per child up to 12, and a second page on the same site describes AED 10 for the family and singles sections. If you are unsure which gate charges, ask at the entrance. Our guide to the best beaches in Abu Dhabi compares the Corniche with Saadiyat, Yas and Al Bateen, so we do not repeat that here. Check the dress rules in our Abu Dhabi rules for tourists before you pack, because the Corniche is a public family area.

Cycling and walking: what to expect

The promenade has paths for walkers and cyclists, so a casual ride does not mean sharing the lane with joggers. Visit Abu Dhabi lists bike hire from Fun Ride Sports, with four stations on the boardwalk and the main one outside Radisson Blu Beach Club and Spa. It offers mountain bikes, city bikes for two or three riders and bikes for women wearing abayas, from AED 30 per hour for adults and AED 20 for children, with a 12-hour voucher booklet at AED 250.

Treat that as a price to confirm, not a promise. Gulf News reported in an older article that the same company's contract with Abu Dhabi Municipality had expired and its bikes had gone, and that pedal carts from another company were being rented instead. Visit Abu Dhabi still lists the operator, so ask at your hotel or at the boardwalk before you plan a ride around it. Boats and jet skis can also be rented off the Corniche, according to Visit Abu Dhabi.

Walk or ride in the early morning or the late afternoon between November and March. Summer afternoons in Abu Dhabi are very hot, so in the hot months treat the promenade as an evening-only walk. Our getting around Abu Dhabi guide explains taxis and buses to the Corniche, which has no metro.

Marina Mall and the Breakwater

The Breakwater is the end of the Corniche where Marina Mall sits, on Marina Mall Island. Visit Abu Dhabi describes the mall as five levels with more than 300 shops and services. Marina Mall's own site lists parking for up to 4,000 cars and a taxi drop-off at the North Entrance. Use it as an air-conditioned break, a meal stop or a base for the Breakwater walk.

Beside the mall, Visit Abu Dhabi places Lulu Island and one of the world's tallest flagpoles. A short walk away is Heritage Village, where artisans work in pottery, glass, metal and fabric. The National reports that it is free to enter and about a 10-minute walk from Marina Mall, with Friday opening only in the afternoon in its older listing, so check the hours on the day.

Sunset on the Corniche

Visit Abu Dhabi says Corniche Beach faces north-west and recommends sunset for photographs, and it lists the ADNOC headquarters tower as visible in that light. The beach is also where a lifeguard stops at sunset, so plan the swim first and the photographs after.

Arrive 30 to 45 minutes early to find a place along the rail, and check the sunset time on your phone for your date, because it changes through the season. For a landmark to photograph, walk toward Emirates Palace, the grand hotel on the western Corniche. Our Emirates Palace visit guide explains the cafe access and the dress code.

The Corniche from Dubai: our tour or on your own

On our Abu Dhabi city tour, the Corniche is a drive along the waterfront with a photo stop at Emirates Palace, between the BAPS Mandir and Heritage Village. The shared tour is from $45 per person for 9 hours with an 8:00 AM hotel pickup in Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman, and a private car for up to 7 people is $245 with a flexible schedule. The shared day is back in Dubai around 5 PM, so it does not include a Corniche sunset or a swim.

If you want to walk, swim or cycle, make the Corniche your own day or use the private car, and tell us your plan on WhatsApp in advance. Our guide to doing Abu Dhabi on your own compares the options, and where to stay in Abu Dhabi helps if you want to sleep near the water and see the Corniche in the evening.
