Four parts of the Waterfront Market worth your time

The fish hall #1
Fish and Seafood section, open 24 hours Choosing fresh fish and seafood yourself

The fish hall

The market's own website lists more than 25 species in its live seafood section, including hamour, king crab and oysters, sourced locally and from abroad. Walk the stalls first, compare what is on offer, and ask for the price and the weight before you agree to anything. The hall is a working market, so wear closed shoes.

Market-to-table restaurants #2
Waterfront restaurants, 12:00 pm to 12:00 am A fish lunch or dinner where you pick the fish

Market-to-table restaurants

Several restaurants on the waterfront cook fish bought in the market, according to the market's dining page. Al Marsa Seafood, Fareej Eshafan Altaybeen and Yahya are named for it, and Paluto and Aylla also serve seafood. Ask each kitchen how it will cook the fish and what it charges, because the market does not publish a cooking fee.

Spice and dry goods market #3
Spice and dry goods section, 6:00 am to 1:00 am Spices, dried foods and gifts to take home

Spice and dry goods market

The market has a separate spice and dry goods section that is open longer hours than most shops, from 6:00 am to 1:00 am. It is a practical place to buy food to take home, and prices are set by the stalls, so ask before the item is weighed. The Deira Spice Souk is the older, more atmospheric alternative for the same shopping.

The Deira Spice Souk, for the rest of the day #4
Old Dubai, Deira Combining a seafood lunch with an Old Dubai walk

The Deira Spice Souk, for the rest of the day

The Waterfront Market grew out of the old Deira Fish Market, and the old trading quarter of Deira is still the natural next stop. The Spice Souk and the Gold Souk are separate from the market and need a separate ride, but together they make a full food-and-shopping day on the north side of the Creek.

Waterfront Market in Deira: the short answer

The Waterfront Market in Deira is Dubai's main fresh-food market, and its fish, meat and fruit-and-vegetable halls are open 24 hours a day. According to the market's own website, the fish market closes only on Friday from 12:00 to 2:00 pm for deep cleaning. You choose fish or seafood from the stalls, have it cleaned at the market, and a restaurant on the waterfront cooks it for you. The restaurants open from 12:00 pm to 12:00 am.

The market says it grew out of the Deira Fish Market, which dates to 1958, and that it moved a short way down the coast from that original site. It is a working market, not a polished attraction. Go for lunch or an early dinner, take some cash and expect to ask for prices, because the market's pages do not publish a price list or a cooking fee. For a seafood meal in a more traditional restaurant, our guide to seafood in Dubai compares the options from budget to splurge.

Opening hours at a glance

Each part of the market keeps its own hours. The table follows the Waterfront Market website as it was on 2 November 2026.

Hours can change, and Ramadan hours may differ. Check the market's website before you go, especially on a Friday.

Because the fish hall never closes except on Friday midday, you can choose your own time, but the restaurants open only at noon, so lunch is the earliest cooked meal. In Ramadan, hours can change, so check the market's website first.

How market-to-table works

The market describes it as a "market to table" experience, and the steps are simple. The cost is the part you have to ask about.

  • Choose your fish. Walk the fish hall and pick fish or seafood from the stalls. The market lists more than 25 species, including hamour, king crab and oysters.
  • Have it cleaned. The market has a fish cleaning area, and stations on site can clean, fillet or portion your fish.
  • Take it to a restaurant. The restaurants on the waterfront will cook it the way you ask, for example grilled, fried or in a curry.
  • Agree the price first. The market's pages give no price per kilo and no cooking fee, so ask the stall and the restaurant before you order.

On the market's dining page, Al Marsa Seafood serves Egyptian and Greek-style seafood and says the catch goes from the market to its kitchen. Fareej Eshafan Altaybeen serves Emirati food and lets guests pick their fish and choose how it is prepared. Yahya serves seafood, grilled fish and curries, with fish straight from the market. Aylla Seafood and Cafe, Bello's Kuzina and Paluto are also listed. Not every restaurant on the page is a seafood place: Kashu Cafe sells burgers, sandwiches and karak tea, nearly around the clock, and a Turkish bakery and an ice cream shop are there too.

If you are not sure what to ask for, our Emirati food guide explains how fish is served in Emirati cooking, with rice, spices and dried lime.

Getting there: taxi, bus, Metro and parking

The market is in Deira, on the north side of the Creek, and it is not beside a Metro station. A taxi is the simplest way to reach it, and the market has a dedicated drop-off and pick-up area at the main entrance. Our taxi and Careem guide explains the options and how to pay.

By public transport, the market's website lists Salah Al Din station as the nearest, about 4.6 km away: roughly 45-50 minutes on foot or 10-15 minutes by taxi. It also names Abu Hail, Gold Souq and Abu Baker Al Siddique stations as nearby, without giving distances, so plan a Metro ride plus a short taxi ride. The Dubai Metro guide has the lines and the Nol card. The nearest bus stop is Abu Hail (Bin Al Shabi Restaurant 2), opposite the market, and the site lists a 10-15 minute walk from there.

If you drive, there are three parking areas. In the basement parking at the Fish and Spice entrances, the first 2 hours are free, then AED 5 per hour for the third and fourth hours and AED 10 per hour after that. The market says you can pay with the Parkonic app or a QR code, or the fee is taken from your Salik account two days later. The outdoor parking on the west side has limited places, and the market's pages show two different sets of rates for it, so confirm before you rely on it.

What else is inside, and what to carry

Besides fish, the market has a meat hall, a fruit and vegetable hall, a spice and dry goods section, a supermarket and a bazaar. ATMs and an Al Ansari Exchange branch are on site. The market says some shops accept cards and others do not, and that more flexible payment options are planned, so carry cash. A porter service is available at AED 10 per hour if you are buying a lot. The customer service desk is at the main entrance.

Wear closed, flat shoes and clothes you do not mind getting wet or smelling of fish. Ask before you photograph stallholders or buyers; our photography rules guide covers people and privacy.

Fishing season opening, 4 to 30 November 2026

The market's website lists "The Opening of Dubai's Fishing Season" as an event from Wednesday 4 November to 30 November 2026, from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm. It describes the 2026-2027 season as an occasion to honour tradition and celebrate Dubai's fishing heritage, with the new season's local catch. The page gives no ticket price, registration or programme, and it names no fish or dates for individual species, so treat it as a reason to visit rather than a fixed schedule.

The website also lists a Fresh Foodie Community and a Little Explorers Passport for families. We did not check how either works, so ask at the customer service desk if they interest you.

Is it worth the trip? An honest view

It is worth it if you like markets and want a fish meal where you chose the fish. It is less convenient if you are staying in Dubai Marina or Downtown, because the ride is long and there is no Metro station next to the entrance. The fish hall is busy and smells of fish, and the market publishes no prices, so you need to ask and compare.

If you would rather eat seafood in a restaurant with a menu and a view, see seafood in Dubai for Creek-side and beachfront options, or where to eat in Old Dubai for cafeteria-style meals. Both are easier without a car.

Pair it with Old Dubai

Deira also has the Spice Souk and the Gold Souk; our Spice Souk guide says what to buy and what to pay. Our Old Dubai walking tour is a shared 3-4 hour walk through Al Fahidi, Al Seef, an abra ride across the Creek and the Spice and Gold Souks. The $35 price includes the abra, Arabic coffee or tea, dates and water, and $55 adds street-food tastings. The walk does not stop at the Waterfront Market, so treat the market as a separate trip, for example on a different morning or afternoon.
