What is the minimum age for water sports in Dubai?

5, as a jet ski passenger behind a driver aged 16 or over. At the watersports base at Umm Suqeim harbour the donut ride is from 12, parasailing and wakeboarding from 15, and the flyboard and driving a jet ski from 16. No children under 5 take part in any activity.

Who can do what, youngest first

Jet ski: passengers from 5, drivers from 16 #1
From $79 per jet ski, up to 2 riders Children aged 5 to 15 riding behind a parent

Jet ski: passengers from 5, drivers from 16

The only activity at the base open to children under 12, and only as a passenger: a child from 5 sits behind a driver aged 16 or over. Everyone wears a life jacket, non-swimmers included, and the instructor leads the ride. Not recommended with back or heart problems.

Donut ride: 12 and over #2
From $149 per ride, up to 4 riders Families with children aged 12+, groups of four

Donut ride: 12 and over

One inflatable tube for up to four riders, towed by a boat for 30 minutes after a safety briefing. There is no weight figure: send the riders' ages and approximate weights when booking and we confirm the group suits one tube. If anyone cannot swim, tell us first.

Parasailing: 15 and over, about 150 kg per flight #3
$99 solo, $179 for a tandem Anyone 15+ who would rather not steer or balance

Parasailing: 15 and over, about 150 kg per flight

You fly in a harness under the canopy while the crew runs the boat: 10-12 minutes in the air on a boat trip of about an hour. The limit is about 150 kg per flight, which on a tandem means both flyers together, so send both weights. Swimming is not on the base's list of requirements.

Wakeboarding: 15 and over, one rider #4
From $139 per person, 30 minutes Teenagers and adults comfortable in the sea

Wakeboarding: 15 and over, one rider

One rider per session behind the boat, with an instructor. Falling in is part of it, and after a fall you wait in the sea for the boat to come back round, so being comfortable in the water helps. The base has given no weight limit: send your height and weight when booking.

Flyboard: 16 and over, up to about 120 kg #5
From $89 per person, 30 minutes Adults and 16-17s who want to learn a balance skill

Flyboard: 16 and over, up to about 120 kg

Boots on a board, jets of water fed through a hose from a jet ski, and 30 minutes to learn to stand above the surface. The weight limit is about 120 kg per rider. There is one board at the base, so a group takes turns. Non-swimmers: we check with the base before you pay.

Under 5 or sitting it out: the shared yacht hour #6
Dubai Marina, from $32 per person Babies, toddlers and anyone sitting the water sports out

Under 5 or sitting it out: the shared yacht hour

Nothing at the Umm Suqeim base takes children under 5 or pregnant guests. The 1-hour shared yacht from Dubai Marina welcomes children of all ages, carries life jackets in every size and cruises past JBR to a photo stop at Ain Dubai: the outing the whole family can share.

The rules for every activity, in one table

Five activities run from the watersports base at Umm Suqeim harbour, and each has its own minimum age: 5 as a jet ski passenger, 12 for the donut ride, 15 for parasailing and wakeboarding, 16 to drive a jet ski or ride the flyboard. Two rules cover the whole base: no pregnant guests and no children under 5 on any activity. Every participant brings an original passport or Emirates ID, and every activity starts with a safety briefing from staff who speak English, French and Arabic.

The table puts the age, weight, rider and swimming rules side by side. Prices, routes and what each activity feels like are in the guide to each one; this page is only about who can take part.

ActivityMinimum ageWeightRidersIf you cannot swim
Jet ski, 30 or 60 min16 to drive, 5 as a passengerSend the pair's combined weightUp to 2 per jet skiFine: everyone wears a life jacket
Donut ride, 30 min12No set figure; send ages and weightsUp to 4 per tubeTell us; we check with the base
Parasailing, 10-12 min in the air15About 150 kg per flight, combined on a tandem1, or 2 on a tandemNot on the base's list of requirements
Wakeboarding, 30 min15None given; send height and weight1 per sessionTell us; falling in is part of it
Flyboard, 30 min16About 120 kg1 board, riders take turnsTell us; we check with the base

No pregnant guests and no children under 5 on any activity. Every participant needs an original passport or Emirates ID, the physical document.

The ages are minimums, not guidelines: a tall 15-year-old still cannot ride the flyboard or drive the jet ski. Where the table says tell us, it means exactly that: send the detail on WhatsApp when you book and we confirm with the base before you pay, so nobody finds out at check-in. For what each activity is like and what it costs, start with water sports in Dubai.

Age limits: what each age can do

Read the ages as a ladder. Each step opens one more activity, and the jet ski is the only one with two ages, because driving and riding behind are different jobs.

  • Under 5: nothing at the base. The 1-hour shared yacht tour in Dubai Marina welcomes children of all ages, with life jackets in every size.
  • 5 to 11: the jet ski as a passenger, behind a driver aged 16 or over. For a small child the 30-minute ride to the Burj Al Arab and back is the simpler choice; the hour to Atlantis is a long time to hold on.
  • 12 to 14: add the donut ride, one tube for up to four riders, so one or both parents can ride with them.
  • 15: add parasailing, solo or as a tandem with a parent, and a wakeboard session. The jet ski is still passenger-only: on the wakeboard and jet ski combination, a 15-year-old rides behind a driver aged 16 or over.
  • 16 and over: everything, including driving the jet ski and the flyboard. Two riders who are both 16 or over can swap at the jet ski handlebars.

None of the five tour pages sets an upper age; what they set instead are health rules, covered below. Our Dubai with kids guide covers the desert, the yachts and the rest of a family trip age by age.

Weight limits: two set figures, three confirmed at booking

Two activities have a number. The flyboard takes riders up to about 120 kg. Parasailing allows about 150 kg per flight, and on a tandem that is the two flyers' combined weight, not each: two adults of 80 kg are over it together and fly two solo flights instead, $99 each, rather than the $179 tandem. Send both weights when you book and we confirm whether the pair can fly together.

The other three work by confirmation rather than a cap. On the jet ski, tell us the two riders' combined weight so we can confirm one jet ski suits two. On the donut, one tube takes up to four riders; send their ages and approximate weights and we confirm the group suits one tube. For wakeboarding the base has not given us a weight limit, so send your height and weight and whether you have ridden before, and we confirm the session suits you. In every case the answer comes before payment, not at the harbour.

Can non-swimmers do water sports in Dubai?

Some, yes, and the others are a question we put to the base before you pay. The answer differs by activity because each one puts you in the water differently.

  • Jet ski: yes. Everyone wears a life jacket, fitted during the briefing, and the instructor leads the group for the whole ride. It is the natural first choice for a non-swimmer who wants to be on the water rather than above it.
  • Parasailing: swimming is not on the base's list of requirements, which are age, weight and no pregnancy. The crew gives a safety briefing before take-off; if the water worries you, tell us when booking and we check with the base.
  • Donut ride: tell us first. If anyone in the group cannot swim, we check with the team at the base and confirm before you pay.
  • Flyboard: tell us first. We check with the base whether the session suits you before payment.
  • Wakeboarding: expect to be in the sea. Falling in is part of it, and after a fall you wait in the sea for the boat to come back round. Being comfortable in the water helps; if you cannot swim, tell us and we check with the base before you pay.

If you are new to boards and wondering how much time you will spend in the sea, wakeboarding for beginners walks through a first session, and the donut ride guide covers what four people on one tube can expect.

Pregnancy, back and heart problems, and older riders

Pregnancy rules out every activity at the base, at any stage: the jet ski, flyboard, parasailing, donut ride and wakeboarding all say so, and so does the Dubai Marina speedboat. The 1-hour shared yacht in the Marina is a calm cruise and does not list pregnancy among its rules; if someone in the group is expecting, check with your doctor first and tell us when you book.

The jet ski is the one page that names health conditions: it is not recommended with back or heart problems. The other four do not list any, which is not the same as saying they suit everyone. If you have a condition that a bump, a fall into the sea or a sudden pull on a rope could aggravate, tell us when you book and we ask the base before you pay.

None of the five sets an upper age; on our list of water trips only the Dubai Marina speedboat does, with no guests aged 65 and over. For an older traveller who wants to try something at the base, parasailing has nothing to steer or balance: you sit in the harness while the crew runs the boat, and a tandem lets a grandparent fly with a grandchild aged 15 or over, within about 150 kg for the pair. Tell us about any health condition when you book.

Documents, arrival and what to wear

Every participant needs an original passport or Emirates ID under Dubai maritime rules, and it must be the physical document: copies and photos on a phone are not accepted. That includes children, and it includes the jet ski passenger. Arrive at Umm Suqeim Fishing Harbour, next to the Jumeirah Beach Hotel and not at JBR, 20 minutes before your slot for check-in and the briefing; late arrivals take part only at the base's discretion, and jet ski riders sign a waiver before the ride.

  • Wear: swimwear for the jet ski, donut, flyboard and wakeboard. For parasailing, swimwear or light clothes you do not mind getting splashed.
  • Bring: a towel and sunscreen. Lockers, changing rooms and showers are at the base.
  • Leave on the boat: hats, loose sunglasses and anything else that could fall during a parasail flight.
  • Phone: bring it for the photos. The jet ski, flyboard, donut and wakeboard come with free photos and videos, sent by AirDrop or WhatsApp; collect them before you leave, because they are not kept after 24 hours. Parasailing has no free photos, and a GoPro rents for AED 150, subject to availability.

Weather, rough sea and rescheduling

Every activity depends on the sea, and parasailing on the wind as well. If conditions are not safe, we move you to another available slot; if none fits your dates, you get a full refund. Separately, cancellation is free up to 24 hours before your slot, and full prepayment is what confirms it.

The practical lesson is to book water sports early in the trip, so a moved slot has somewhere to go. On the season: October to April is the comfortable season on the water; from May to September it is hot, and the early slots are the coolest. On the jet ski, early-morning and midday slots also carry the from-price, and afternoon ones cost more.

Mixed ages in one group: plans that fit the rules

With teenagers, the age ladder decides the plan more than the budget does. All of these start at the same harbour, and the base leaves a 30-minute break between activities, so two in one morning is easy.

  • Two parents, teens of 12 to 15: the $228 option, the donut for all four plus one jet ski for a parent and a teen, and a second jet ski from $79 for the other pair, from $307 in all. Everyone rides twice, and the parents drive.
  • Teens of 15 and 17: both can parasail, and a tandem with a parent works if the pair is within about 150 kg. The 17-year-old can drive a jet ski with the 15-year-old behind; the 15-year-old can wakeboard while the others wait.
  • A 16-year-old: everything is open, and the flyboard and jet ski combination at $168 pairs the two activities that need 16, with a parent riding as the jet ski passenger at no extra cost.
  • A younger sibling under 12 in the group: the jet ski is the one activity everyone from 5 can share, as long as every jet ski has a driver aged 16 or over; do the 30-minute ride together, then let the older ones add the donut or a flight.

Start with the donut ride if the group is four and everyone is 12 or over: one price, one tube and free photos. The jet ski guide and the parasailing guide go deeper into prices and routes for the other two. Send us everyone's age and approximate weight on WhatsApp, and we confirm what each person can do before you pay.

FAQ

What is the minimum age for water sports in Dubai?

5, as a jet ski passenger behind a driver aged 16 or over. At the watersports base at Umm Suqeim harbour the donut ride is from 12, parasailing and wakeboarding from 15, and the flyboard and driving a jet ski from 16. No children under 5 take part in any activity.

Can kids ride a jet ski in Dubai?

Yes, as passengers from age 5, behind a driver aged 16 or over, such as a parent. The second rider costs nothing, so a parent and child share one jet ski from $79 for 30 minutes. Everyone wears a life jacket. Children cannot drive: the minimum age for the driver is 16.

What is the weight limit for parasailing in Dubai?

About 150 kg per flight. On a tandem that is the two flyers' combined weight, so send both weights when booking; a pair over the limit flies two solo flights instead. Flyers must be 15 or older, and parasailing is not allowed during pregnancy.

Can non-swimmers do water sports in Dubai?

On the jet ski, yes: everyone wears a life jacket and the instructor leads. Swimming is not on the parasailing requirements either. For the donut, flyboard and wakeboarding, tell us when booking and we check with the base before you pay; on the wakeboard you will end up in the sea, because after a fall you wait in the water for the boat.

Can I do water sports in Dubai while pregnant?

No. None of the five activities at the base, the jet ski, flyboard, parasailing, donut ride or wakeboarding, is allowed during pregnancy, at any stage. The 1-hour shared yacht in Dubai Marina is a calm cruise and does not list pregnancy among its rules; check with your doctor first and tell us when you book.

Is there a weight limit for the flyboard in Dubai?

Yes, about 120 kg per rider, and riders must be 16 or older. There is one board at the base, so a group takes turns, 30 minutes each.

What documents do I need for water sports in Dubai?

An original passport or Emirates ID for every participant, children and jet ski passengers included. It is a Dubai maritime rule, and it must be the physical document: copies and photos on a phone are not accepted. Arrive 20 minutes early for check-in and the safety briefing.

What happens if the sea is too rough?

We move you to another available slot, and if none fits your dates you get a full refund. Parasailing also depends on the wind. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before your slot.
