Yes, and it is the classic Dubai proposal. The sunrise balloon gives you 40-70 minutes of silence at 2,000-4,000 feet over the desert, the sun coming up over the Hajar Mountains and a landing followed by breakfast at a private Bedouin camp, for $275 per person. The best moment is just after sunrise, in the quiet between burns; the second best is the camp, with solid ground to kneel on. Tell us when you book and the crew help with timing and photos. Nobody controls the wind, so this guide also plans the backup: a private sunset yacht, booked as the celebration either way.

Tour on this route: Sunrise Hot Air Balloon in Dubai — From $275 per person, 4-5 hours.
Can you propose on a hot air balloon in Dubai?
Yes. The sunrise balloon is $275 per person, $550 for two, with pre-dawn hotel pickup, a 40-70 minute flight at 2,000-4,000 feet and breakfast at a Bedouin camp afterwards. Tell us at booking and the pilot and crew help with the timing and the photo. The best moment is just after sunrise in the quiet between burns; the camp after landing is the option if you want to kneel.
This guide also answers:
- Is the balloon basket private for a proposal?
- Can we have champagne on the balloon?
- What if the balloon flight is cancelled on the day?
Four places the question can be asked, all of them good
#1
In the basket, just after sunrise
The classic. Once the sun has cleared the Hajar Mountains and the dunes have turned gold, the pilot spends long stretches not firing the burner, and the basket goes completely quiet. That is the window: the light is at its best, the other guests are looking outwards, and the photo has the desert and the sky in it. Tell the crew in advance and they will give you the nod.
#2
At the camp after landing
A basket has no room to kneel and no privacy, and some couples want both. After touchdown a vintage Land Rover or SUV takes everyone to a private Bedouin camp with the sun still low: dunes for a backdrop, breakfast waiting, a camel and a falcon for the photos afterwards. It is the option we suggest to anyone who wants the question asked with feet on the ground.
#3
Plan B: a private sunset yacht
If the pilots ground the morning you get a full refund or a new date, and the proposal moves to the water that evening. A 31 ft boat for the two of you is from AED 400 per hour, minimum 3 hours; a 48 ft yacht with a cabin from AED 800 per hour, minimum 2. Bring your own champagne, ask for a cake in advance, and put the ring in front of the Palm as the sun goes.
#4
Plan C: the dunes at sunset
The desert from the ground, the same evening. The full-day safari collects you at the hotel in the afternoon, and after the dune bashing there is a stretch on the Big Red dunes as the sand turns to fire and the camel silhouettes line up. No prepayment means it can be booked at 10 AM after a cancelled flight and paid on the day, dinner and shows at the camp included.
#5
The budget version: the shared sunset hour
One hour on a luxury yacht through the Marina canal, past JBR and to a photo stop under Ain Dubai, with a crew used to helping couples with the picture. It is shared with other guests, so it is a backdrop rather than a private stage, but at $32 a seat it makes the sunset after the flight, or after a cancelled flight, an easy decision.
Proposing on the Dubai balloon: the short answer
You can, it works, and the mechanics are simpler than most people fear. The sunrise balloon flight is $275 per person, so $550 for the two of you, with pre-dawn pickup from any hotel in Dubai city, a 40-70 minute flight at 2,000-4,000 feet over the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, and a landing followed by a Land Rover ride to a private Bedouin camp for a gourmet breakfast, a short camel ride and a falcon photo. A 30% deposit confirms the basket, and in winter the baskets sell out one to two weeks ahead, earlier around Valentine's week.
The proposal itself has two natural windows: in the basket just after sunrise, when the burner goes quiet for long stretches and the light is at its best, or at the camp after landing, with solid ground, space and the dunes behind you. Tell us when you book, not on the morning; the pilot and crew are used to it and will help with the timing and the photographs, and the basket is shared with other guests, who tend to be delighted.
What nobody controls is the weather. Balloons fly only in calm wind, the pilots decide on the morning, and a cancelled flight gives you a full refund or a new date. A proposal needs a plan that survives that, which is why the second half of this guide is about the yacht: booked as the celebration on the evening either way, it becomes the stage if the sky says no.
How the morning runs, minute by minute
Knowing the sequence in advance is what makes the timing easy. The whole outing is 4-5 hours door to door, and the two proposal windows fall at roughly the one-third and two-thirds marks.
- Pre-dawn pickup from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle; the time depends on sunrise (about 7:00 AM in January, about 5:30 AM in June) and is confirmed on WhatsApp the day before. It is dark, and your partner is half asleep, which helps.
- Inflation and briefing at the take-off site: about 30-40 minutes in the cold watching the envelopes glow as the burners fire, then the safety briefing from the GCAA-licensed pilots. The ring stays in a zipped pocket.
- Lift-off in the blue hour, and the ground crew shrink below. The burner fires often in the climb and the basket is noisy and warm.
- Sunrise from the air, early in the flight: the sun clears the Hajar Mountains and the dunes turn from grey to gold. Everyone is looking out and photographing.
- The quiet stretch, once the balloon is at height: long gaps between burns, no wind noise because you move with the wind, oryx and camels below. This is window one.
- Descent and landing on sand, 40-70 minutes after lift-off: hands on the rope handles, knees bent, a bump and perhaps a short slide. Nothing is in your hands at this point, ring included.
- The camp, reached by vintage Land Rover or SUV: breakfast with veg and non-veg options, the camel ride, the falcon photo. This is window two, with the light still low and the dunes behind you.
- Drop-off at the hotel by mid-morning, with your electronic flight certificate signed by the pilot arriving digitally, dated for the day you got engaged.
Timing the moment: basket or camp?
Both work, and the choice is about the kind of moment you want. The basket gives you the sky and the silence; the camp gives you the ground and the space. Couples who want the photograph to say balloon choose the basket; couples who want to kneel, hug properly and not share the moment with ten strangers choose the camp.
| In the basket after sunrise | At the camp after landing | |
|---|---|---|
| Light | The best of the day, sun just up | Still low and warm, about an hour after sunrise |
| Privacy | Shared basket; other guests see and usually applaud | Shared camp, but space to step away against the dunes |
| Kneeling | No room; standing only | Yes, on sand |
| Photos | From the basket, by you or the crew; the desert and other balloons behind | By the crew or a fellow guest, unhurried; camel and falcon frames afterwards |
| Noise | Quiet between burns, loud when the burner fires | Quiet |
| Risk to the ring | A dropped ring is gone; keep it zipped until the moment | None |
| Sharing it live | In-flight Wi-Fi at 4,000 feet | Phone signal at the camp, usually |
Our honest recommendation for most couples: ask in the basket, celebrate at the camp. The pilot will tell you when the quiet stretch is coming, you ask with the desert below and the sun just up, and forty minutes later you have breakfast with time to look at each other. If your partner dislikes an audience, reverse it: enjoy the flight as a flight and ask on the sand with the balloon still lying behind you.
What we can arrange, and what we cannot
We would rather promise less and deliver it. This is what a proposal booking with us includes and what it does not.
- We tell the pilot and crew in advance. They know which window you want, they keep an eye on you, and they are practised at taking the photo without making it obvious.
- Timing help. The pilot can tell you, discreetly, when the next long quiet stretch is coming, so you are not asking mid-burn.
- The ring. Advice, not custody: a zipped inside pocket from pickup to the moment. A basket at 4,000 feet is the one place in Dubai where a dropped ring is gone for good.
- The keepsake. The electronic flight certificate signed by the pilot, dated for the morning, arrives on your phone.
- The photos. Yours, the crew's help, and in-flight Wi-Fi to share the first frame from the basket; we do not offer a separate photographer on the flight.
- Not champagne in the basket. No alcohol is allowed on the flight or in the vehicles, for safety; the champagne is for the hotel afterwards or for the yacht that evening, where guests of 21 and over may bring their own.
- Not a private basket. The flight is shared with other guests. If a completely private sky matters more than the balloon itself, the private yacht below is the better stage.
Send us the date and tell us it is a proposal on the same WhatsApp message as the booking. We will confirm the basket, take the 30% deposit, and remind you about the two windows and the weather backup the day before, when we confirm the pickup time. Nothing about the plan is visible to your partner: a sunrise balloon is on most couples' Dubai wish list already, so booking it raises no suspicion.
The photos: getting the one that matters
The flight is timed for photographers, and a proposal simply adds one frame to a morning full of them. The basket shot works best in the quiet stretch after sunrise with the sun to one side: one of you turns to face the other, the phone or camera goes to the crew or the guest beside you with a word beforehand, and the desert and, with luck, another balloon sit behind. Keep the phone on a wrist strap and the ring zipped until the second before.
At the camp the light is still low and warm. Use the dunes, not the tents, as the background; take the ring close-up in portrait mode; then let the camel ride and the falcon session give you the pictures that look like a celebration. The in-flight Wi-Fi means the first photo can reach both families before you land, if that is the plan, and the flight certificate with the pilot's signature is the frame that goes on the wall.
Our balloon photo guide has the settings for every stage, from the glow at inflation to the oryx below, and what to wear for the balloon covers the layers and the zipped pockets that keep both the ring and the phone safe. Dress for the photograph you want in the base layer; the jacket comes off in the basket anyway.
Plan B: the yacht, booked as the celebration either way
The wind is the one variable, and the way to beat it is not to book a backup you hope not to use, but to book the evening you would want anyway. A private sunset charter from Dubai Marina is the natural celebration after a morning engagement, and if the pilots ground the flight, the same yacht becomes the proposal. Our private charters are priced per hour for the whole boat, with captain, crew, fuel, water, ice and soft drinks included, and you may bring your own drinks if you are 21 or over.
Booking is on WhatsApp: guests, hours, date and the occasion. We check the yacht with the marina and confirm the time and total before any payment. Boarding is at the marina lounge on the marina level of Al Majara Tower, Dubai Marina, 20-30 minutes before departure, with shoes off before you step aboard and a copy of each passport on your phone. The sunset slot is the most requested of the day, so it is the first thing to reserve once the balloon date is fixed.
| Boat | Guests | From, per hour | Minimum | The proposal route |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sealine, 31 ft boat | 6 | AED 400 | 3 hours (AED 1,200) | Marina canal, JBR, Ain Dubai, then the Palm lagoon with a swim stop in daylight |
| Orion, 48 ft yacht, 1 cabin | 12 | AED 800 | 2 hours (AED 1,600) | Marina canal, JBR, Bluewaters and Ain Dubai at sunset |
| Misty, 50 ft yacht, 1 cabin | 12 | AED 1,000 | 2 hours (AED 2,000) | The same 2-hour loop with more deck; 3 hours adds the Palm lagoon |
| Daphne, 53 ft yacht, 2 crew | 17 | AED 1,000 | 2 hours (AED 2,000) | For a proposal with both families on board |
Retail rates for the whole boat. Catering such as a cake or platters is added in advance for a fee; the security pre-authorisation of AED 2,000-15,000 is held on a card at check-in and released after the trip.
For two people the Sealine at AED 1,200 for 3 hours is the honest pick: the Marina, JBR and Ain Dubai in the golden hour, the Palm lagoon as the sun goes, a swim if it is early enough, and the skyline lighting up on the way back. For a cabin, a proper deck and a champagne moment with the crew out of the way, the Orion at AED 1,600 for 2 hours. Our proposal on a yacht guide goes boat by boat, with the Palm or Burj Al Arab as the backdrop and how to keep it private. Note the charter's own cancellation terms if you do change your mind: 50% is retained up to 48 hours before, 100% within the last 24, while a Coast Guard weather warning means a new route, a new date or a full refund.
Plan C, the budget and the week around it
If a private yacht is more than the budget wants, there are two cheaper stages that both survive a windy dawn. The full-day desert safari takes no prepayment, collects you at the hotel in the afternoon and puts you on the Big Red dunes at sunset, from $45 per person, with the camp dinner and the shows afterwards; it can be booked on the morning of a cancelled flight. The 1-hour shared yacht cruise, from $32, gives you the Marina skyline and Ain Dubai at sunset with a crew who will take the photo, shared with other guests and paid in advance because the hourly slots sell out.
| Plan | Morning | Evening | Total for two |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sky and water | Balloon, $550 | Sealine 3 hours, AED 1,200 | $550 plus AED 1,200 |
| Sky and cabin | Balloon, $550 | Orion 2 hours, AED 1,600 | $550 plus AED 1,600 |
| Sky and sand | Balloon, $550 | Desert safari, $90 | $640 |
| Sky and skyline | Balloon, $550 | Shared yacht hour, $64 | $614 |
Around the day itself, fly on your second or third morning, not the last, so a cancellation can be moved rather than refunded; the season and weather guide explains how the wind decision works and which months are kindest. Our most romantic morning in Dubai guide pairs the flight with the rest of a couple's day, and the honeymoon and couples itinerary lays out the whole five days with the balloon on the right morning and the yacht on the right evening.
The booking checklist
Everything that needs to happen before the morning, in the order it needs to happen.
- Two weeks out: book the balloon on WhatsApp for day 2 or 3 of the trip, say it is a proposal, pay the 30% deposit. Earlier around Valentine's week, Eid and the last two weeks of December.
- Same message: reserve the sunset yacht for that evening, or the shared hour, or leave the safari as the no-prepayment fallback.
- Passports: a passport or ID, or a clear copy, for each of you on the morning, for the flight manifest; a copy on your phone for the yacht.
- The day before: we confirm the pickup time; you confirm the window you want, basket or camp; the ring goes into a zipped inside pocket of the jacket you will wear at pickup.
- Clothes: layers, long trousers, closed shoes, a base layer you want in the photos.
- Phone: charged to 100%, on a wrist strap, with room for video.
- If the flight is cancelled: take the new date if the trip allows, or the refund; the yacht, the dunes or the shared hour become the stage that evening.
- Afterwards: the flight certificate arrives digitally; screenshot it with the date and send it to us with the news, because we like to know.
FAQ
Can you propose on a hot air balloon in Dubai?
Yes. The sunrise balloon is $275 per person, $550 for two, with pre-dawn hotel pickup, a 40-70 minute flight at 2,000-4,000 feet and breakfast at a Bedouin camp afterwards. Tell us at booking and the pilot and crew help with the timing and the photo. The best moment is just after sunrise in the quiet between burns; the camp after landing is the option if you want to kneel.
When is the best moment to propose during the balloon flight?
Once the sun has cleared the Hajar Mountains and the balloon is at height, the pilot leaves long gaps between burns and the basket falls silent; that is the window, typically in the middle of the flight, with the best light of the morning. Ask the pilot beforehand and they will tell you when the next quiet stretch is coming.
Is the balloon basket private for a proposal?
No, the basket is shared with other guests, and there is no room to kneel. Most couples find the other passengers add to the moment; if you would rather have privacy, ask at the camp after landing, where there is space against the dunes, or make the evening's private yacht the stage, from AED 400 per hour for a 31 ft boat.
Can we have champagne on the balloon?
No. Alcohol is not allowed on the flight or in the vehicles, along with smoking, drones, pets and large luggage. The champagne moment belongs to the hotel afterwards or to a private yacht that evening, where guests of 21 and over may bring their own drinks; a cake can be added to the charter in advance.
What if the balloon flight is cancelled on the day?
Wind or poor visibility can ground the flight, decided by the pilots on the morning, and you get a full refund or a new date. Fly on day 2 or 3 of the trip so a cancellation can be moved, and book the sunset yacht as the celebration either way: if the sky says no, the question is asked in front of the Palm at sunset instead.
Will someone take our photo in the balloon?
The crew will help, and so will the guest beside you if you ask before the moment; we do not offer a separate photographer on the flight. In-flight Wi-Fi at 4,000 feet lets you send the first frame from the basket, the camp gives unhurried pictures with the camel and the falcon, and the electronic flight certificate signed by the pilot carries the date.
How much does a balloon proposal in Dubai cost?
$550 for two on the sunrise flight, with a 30% deposit at booking and the rest later. Add the evening: from AED 1,200 for a 31 ft boat for 3 hours, AED 1,600 for a 48 ft yacht for 2 hours, $90 for the desert safari at sunset for two, or $64 for the shared yacht hour. Nothing is charged for telling the crew it is a proposal.
