Entry is free for visitors under 18, UAE university students and UAE residents aged 60 and over, according to Gulf News and The National. It is a Frank Gehry building in the Saadiyat Cultural District, the same district as the Louvre Abu Dhabi, with contemporary art from about 1960 to the present. This guide covers what is confirmed, what is not, the ticket categories and how to combine the museum with the Louvre on a trip from Dubai.

When does the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi open?
On Friday 11 December 2026, according to Khaleej Times and Gulf News, after the Department of Culture and Tourism announced the date on 28 July 2026. Tickets have been on sale since 18 September 2026 on the museum's website.

Four stops to plan around the Guggenheim opening
#1
Louvre Abu Dhabi
Visit Abu Dhabi lists the Louvre adult ticket at AED 70, with free entry under 18, closed on Mondays and a visit of 2-3 hours. The building, with its lattice dome, is half of the attraction. Because both museums are in the same district, one trip can cover both, but leave room for a long day and check the Louvre's hours before you go.
#2
Zayed National Museum
Khaleej Times and The National list it among the institutions in the Saadiyat Cultural District, and our Saadiyat guide describes its five steel falcon-wing towers. We have not verified hours or ticket prices for it here, so check the museum's own site before planning it into a day. It is the natural third stop for a two-day museum trip.
#3
Saadiyat Beach
Our Saadiyat guide describes long stretches of pale sand and clear shallow water, best from November to April. A day with one museum and the beach works better than two museums back to back. The public beach charges a modest entry fee and beach clubs sell day passes, so check current prices before you commit.
#4
Qasr Al Watan
Qasr Al Watan is the presidential palace and the best second museum-style visit in the capital, according to our guide. It is not in the Saadiyat Cultural District, so it belongs to a different day or a different half of the day. Our guide gives tickets from AED 65 for adults and a visit of 2-3 hours, and the palace has its own rules, so check them before you go.
Guggenheim Abu Dhabi: the short answer
The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi opens to the public on Friday 11 December 2026, and general admission is AED 70. The Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi announced the date on 28 July 2026, Khaleej Times reported, and tickets went on sale on 18 September 2026 on the museum's website, guggenheimabudhabi.ae, according to The National. Entry is free for visitors under 18, UAE university students, UAE citizens and residents aged 60 and over, and people of determination.
Three things are not confirmed in the reports we read as of 2 November 2026: the opening hours, the day the museum is closed and the full list of opening exhibitions. Khaleej Times said more collection and commission details would follow in the coming months. So do not plan a Monday visit until the hours are published, because the Louvre is closed on Mondays and the Guggenheim's day off is not yet known.
What it is
The museum is a contemporary art museum designed by Frank Gehry, in the heart of the cultural district on Saadiyat Island. The project dates back to 2006, and Khaleej Times noted that the opening comes almost 20 years after its inception. The building is large: about 80,000 square metres in total, with about 11,600 square metres of indoor gallery space and, per Khaleej Times, 23,000 square metres of outdoor exhibition space.
Its signature feature is ten sculptural cones rising up to 88 metres. Khaleej Times says nine are stainless steel mesh and one is onyx and glass, and Gulf News says they shade the building and move air through it. The galleries are connected by a central atrium. The reports disagree on the count: Gulf News says 28 galleries and Khaleej Times says 30, so we show both.
- Collection: owned by the Abu Dhabi government; Gulf News says recent accounts put it above 970 works by more than 400 artists, covering roughly 1960 to the present.
- Themes: five gallery themes have been named: Abstractions, Popular Culture, Land, Language and Storytelling.
- Named artists: Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Yayoi Kusama, El Anatsui and Anish Kapoor, plus regional artists such as Hassan Sharif, Mohammed Kazem and Ebtisam Abdulaziz.
- What is not released: the full list of works in the opening exhibitions.
Tickets: who pays what
The National published the full ticket list on 18 September 2026. Discounted and free categories need proof of eligibility, and some tickets must be collected at the ticketing desk on the day.
| Visitor | Price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | AED 70 | Standard general admission |
| Under 18 | Free | Children aged 12 and under must be with an adult at all times |
| Students at UAE universities | Free | Proof of ID needed; collect the ticket at the desk on the day |
| UAE citizens and residents aged 60 and over | Free | Senior citizens |
| People of determination | Free | A complimentary companion ticket is added at checkout |
| Fazaa and Esaad cardholders | AED 50 | Proof of eligibility needed |
| UAE military, Homat Al Watan, UAE-employed educators | AED 35 | Proof of eligibility needed |
Prices from The National, 18 September 2026, and Gulf News. Check the museum's website before you buy; we have not seen a combined ticket with the Louvre.
Buy only on the museum's own website, where the free and discounted categories are handled. We have not seen a joint Louvre and Guggenheim ticket announced, so plan to buy two separate tickets.
The Saadiyat Cultural District: what else is there
Khaleej Times and The National name the other institutions in the district as the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi. Our Saadiyat Island guide explains the island, the beach and how the museums fit together. The table lists what to check for each.
| Place | What it is | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Guggenheim Abu Dhabi | Contemporary art museum designed by Frank Gehry | Opening hours, closing day and exhibitions, still to be published |
| Louvre Abu Dhabi | A universal art museum under a lattice dome | About AED 65 for adults; closed Mondays; see our Louvre guide |
| Zayed National Museum | The national museum of the UAE and Sheikh Zayed | Hours and tickets on the museum's own site |
| Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi | A museum of life on Earth | Hours and tickets on the museum's own site |
| teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi | Immersive digital art | Timed tickets on the museum's own site |
Only the Guggenheim details above come from announcements we read for this article. Check each museum's own site for hours and prices.
For other new places this season, see our new attractions guide. Note that the Museum of the Future in Dubai has been temporarily closed since 1 September 2026, with a reopening reported for the first quarter of 2027, so it is not an option on this trip; our Museum of the Future guide has the latest.
How to combine it with the Louvre
Both museums are in the Saadiyat Cultural District, so you do not need to cross the city between them. We have not seen an official walking time between the two entrances or a shuttle announced, so check the district map when you arrive. The Louvre takes 2-3 hours, per our guide. No visit time has been published for the Guggenheim, so for planning treat it the same and allow 2-3 hours, then adjust.
| Plan | Order | Realistic for |
|---|---|---|
| Two museums in one day | Louvre at opening, lunch, Guggenheim in the afternoon | Art lovers who accept a full day and a long drive back |
| One museum and the beach | One museum in the morning, Saadiyat Beach from mid-afternoon in winter | Most visitors from Dubai |
| Two days, one night in Abu Dhabi | Louvre on day one, Guggenheim on day two | Anyone who wants both without rushing |
| Guggenheim and a palace | Guggenheim in the morning, Qasr Al Watan in the afternoon | A culture day away from the beach |
Plans are our suggestions, not official routes. Check the closing day of the Guggenheim before you choose a day.
In the first weeks after the opening, expect crowds, and go on a weekday if the hours allow it. The opening day, 11 December, is a Friday, and opening weekends are usually the busiest. Our Louvre guide has the Louvre's hours, and our Qasr Al Watan guide covers the palace.
Getting there from Dubai
Saadiyat Island is about 150 km from Dubai, which is 1.5-2 hours by road, plus 15-25 minutes from central Abu Dhabi, per our Louvre guide. A taxi is the simplest way, and our Dubai to Abu Dhabi guide compares the bus, taxi and car. The Etihad Rail article covers the train, which takes about 57 minutes to MBZ City, but you then need a taxi to the island.
Our Abu Dhabi city tour does not go to Saadiyat or to any museum. It is a 9-hour loop from an 8:00 AM hotel pickup, from $45 per person, with the Grand Mosque, the BAPS Mandir, the Corniche and Heritage Village. The Guggenheim and the Louvre need their own tickets and time. If you want a museum day, message us on WhatsApp about the private car, $245 for up to 7 guests with a flexible schedule, and we say plainly what fits. Our tour or on your own guide helps you choose.
If you want a heritage morning in Dubai before or after, the Old Dubai walking tour is from $35 per person and takes 3-4 hours.
