Pay for the Burj Khalifa if you want height, and for the Dubai Frame if you want a cheap hour. The Frame costs about AED 50, takes about an hour and shows Old Dubai and the Downtown towers side by side from 150 m. Levels 124 and 125 of the Burj Khalifa are from $55, take 1.5-2 hours and put you 452 m up. This guide compares price, height, view, crowds and timing, says who should pick which, and shows how to do both in one day.

Five ways to spend your viewing budget
#1
Burj Khalifa, Levels 124 and 125
The classic: floor-to-ceiling glass, an outdoor terrace, telescopes and free Wi-Fi, and no time limit on either level. At 452 m it looks down on the whole city. Allow 1.5-2 hours, and choose a slot about an hour before sunset to see daylight, dusk and the lit skyline on one ticket. We book the date and slot and send the e-ticket on WhatsApp.
#2
Burj Khalifa SKY, Level 148
The upgrade adds Level 148 at 555 m, with a lounge, a host and refreshments, plus priority access. The visit starts with about 30 minutes there, then moves down to 125 and 124. It costs about double, so choose it for a birthday or a proposal, not because you think the view is twice as good. Our 124 vs 148 guide explains what the extra buys.
#3
Dubai Frame
A 150 m sky bridge with a glass floor, galleries on the city's past and future, and a view that splits Old Dubai from the modern towers. It takes about an hour and costs roughly a quarter of the tower. It is lower, so it shows the skyline from the side, but it includes the Burj Khalifa itself in the picture.
#4
Both in one day
Frame at 8:00 AM when it opens, a late lunch and a rest, then the tower at a slot an hour before sunset. The views are different enough that it is not repetition, and the combined cost is around AED 50 plus from $55 per person. Keep the tower as the fixed booking, because its sunset slots cost more and sell out.
#5
Neither: the free view from the lake
If you do not want to pay for any view, the lakeside walk at the foot of the tower shows the Burj Khalifa and the Fountain shows from about 6 PM, every 30 minutes, for nothing. You will not see the city from above, but you will see the tower itself lit up, and you can still book a deck slot on another day.
Dubai Frame or Burj Khalifa: the short answer
Pay for the Burj Khalifa if you want height. Levels 124 and 125 are 452 m up, cost from $55 per person and take 1.5-2 hours. Pay for the Dubai Frame if you want a cheap hour. It is 150 m high, costs about AED 50 (roughly $14) and shows Old Dubai and the Downtown towers side by side.
If you can afford only one view and it is your first visit, book the tower, at a slot about an hour before sunset. If the budget is tight, the schedule is full or you are already in Karama or Bur Dubai, the Frame is a good use of an hour. If you have time for both, they are different enough to justify it. Our Burj Khalifa ticket is the booking to make first, and the Dubai Frame guide has the rest of the Frame.

Height and what you actually see
The numbers explain most of the difference. The Frame's sky deck is at 150 m. Level 124 is at 452 m, about three times higher, and Level 148 is at 555 m. From the tower you look down on Downtown and the lake, and on a clear day you see the coast and the roads fanning out; from the Frame you look across at the skyline.
That is not entirely a disadvantage. The Frame is one of the few places where the Burj Khalifa is in the picture, which matters if you want photographs with the tower in them, and you cannot take that photograph from inside the tower. Its other trick is the split view: the older districts to the north and the modern towers to the south, in one turn of the head.
Both depend on the air. November to March brings the clearest views, and in summer, haze can soften the horizon, which is why an evening slot is often better than a midday one. The best time to visit the Burj Khalifa guide has sunset times for every month.
Price: what you really pay
The dirham is pegged to the dollar at about AED 3.67, so the maths is simple. The Frame at about AED 50 is roughly $14. Levels 124 and 125 from $55 are about AED 200, and SKY from $115 is about AED 420. The Frame is therefore about a quarter of the price of the tower and an eighth of SKY.
For four adults that is about AED 200 at the Frame against from $220 at the tower. Sunset and other prime-time slots cost more than off-peak ones, and we quote the exact price for your slot on WhatsApp before you pay. Tickets for the tower are issued for a fixed date and slot and cannot be refunded or changed, so check the date first.
Is the tower worth four times the Frame? For a first visit, yes: the height is the product. If you have visited an observation deck in another city and just want an hour of context for Dubai, no. The Burj Khalifa Level 124 vs 148 guide covers the upgrade, and Burj Khalifa or Sky Views covers the other tall option.
Crowds, queues and timing
Both are busiest at weekends and on winter evenings. The tower runs on timed slots every half hour, and the visit starts inside The Dubai Mall: a walk to the lower ground floor, a security check with metal detectors and an exhibition before the lift. Plan to be in the mall before your slot, not at it.
The Frame is simpler. It opens at 8:00 AM, which makes the first hour the quietest, and it needs no walk through a mall. The cost of that simplicity is shorter opening: it closes at 9:00 PM, while the tower is open until 11:00 PM, so a late-evening view means the tower. The tower's sunset slots cost more and book up first, so the Frame is the easier one to fit in at short notice.
Who should pick which
A quick rule, honestly applied:
- Pick the Burj Khalifa if it is your first visit, if height is the reason you came, if you want sunset and night on one ticket, or if it is a special occasion.
- Pick the Dubai Frame if the budget is tight, if you want a short visit with children who tire quickly, if you are staying near Karama or Bur Dubai, or if you want the Old Dubai and modern view in one go.
- Pick both if you have several days in Downtown, want different views and do not mind spending a few hours on the one theme.
- Pick neither if you dislike heights, or if the day is already full: the free lakeside walk and the Fountain give a taste of the tower, and the Dubai Marina yacht tour from $32 per person gives a skyline view from the water.
How to do both in one day
Take the Red Line to Al Jafiliya for the Frame at 8:00 AM, spend about an hour, then head for breakfast in Karama or a rest at the hotel. The Frame and the tower are on the same Red Line, a few stops apart, so there is no change; a trip costs roughly AED 3-7.5 on a Silver Nol card, and the Dubai Metro guide explains the cards.
Keep the tower for an hour before sunset, finishing with the Fountain shows from about 6 PM. If you would rather make the old-city half a proper outing, the Old Dubai walking tour takes 3-4 hours from $35 per person and starts near Sharaf DG Metro station. Our Downtown Dubai area guide and best things to do in Dubai on a first visit show how it fits into the rest of the trip. The Museum of the Future, which many guides list beside the Frame, is closed at present; the museum or Frame comparison explains the status.
FAQ
Is the Dubai Frame or the Burj Khalifa better?
For height and the full-city view, the Burj Khalifa: Level 124 is 452 m up and tickets are from $55. For a cheap, short visit, the Dubai Frame: about AED 50, 150 m, around an hour. First-time visitors with one view in the budget should pick the tower.
How much cheaper is the Dubai Frame than the Burj Khalifa?
The Frame is about AED 50 (roughly $14) for adults, against from $55 for Levels 124 and 125 and from $115 for SKY Level 148. That makes the Frame about a quarter of the price of the tower. Check the official site for the current Frame price.
Can you see the Burj Khalifa from the Dubai Frame?
Yes. The south side of the sky deck looks over Sheikh Zayed Road and the Downtown towers, with the Burj Khalifa among them. The north side looks over the older districts of Dubai.
How high is the Dubai Frame compared with the Burj Khalifa?
The Frame's sky bridge is at 150 m. The Burj Khalifa observation deck on Level 124 is at 452 m, and SKY Level 148 is at 555 m. The tower itself is 828 m tall, far above the Frame's whole structure.
Can I visit both in one day?
Yes, easily. The Frame opens at 8:00 AM and takes about an hour. Keep the tower for a slot about an hour before sunset. Both are on the Red Line, a few stops apart, so a Metro trip costs roughly AED 3-7.5.
Which is better for children?
The Frame is shorter and cheaper, with children about AED 20 and under-threes free, and a gallery with screens. The tower has no time limit on Levels 124 and 125 and an outdoor terrace, and children must be accompanied by an adult. For small children, the Frame is the lower-stress option.
Which is better at night?
The Burj Khalifa. It is open until 11:00 PM and a sunset slot lets you stay for the lit city, while the Dubai Frame closes at 9:00 PM. Prime-time slots cost more, and we quote the price for your slot on WhatsApp.
