Full-Day Desert Safari in Dubai — From $45 per person

Forty-eight hours is enough for the best of Dubai if each day stays in one part of the city. Day 1 is Old Dubai on foot in the cool morning, then Downtown by metro for Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall and the free Fountain. Day 2 is the coast, JBR beach in the morning, and our 7-hour desert safari from the afternoon, with pickup at your hotel. Below is each day hour by hour, what each hour costs and what to swap if your flight is early.

Tour on this route: Full-Day Desert Safari in Dubai — From $45 per person, 7 hours.

Is 48 hours enough for Dubai?

Yes for the highlights, not for the whole city. Two days cover Old Dubai, Burj Khalifa and the Fountain on day 1 and a beach morning and the 7-hour desert safari on day 2. Budget about $150 per person in tours, tickets and metro fares, plus the hotel and meals. Abu Dhabi and the sunrise balloon need more days.

The 48 hours at a glance

Day 1 morning: Old Dubai on foot #1
Al Fahidi, the abra, the souks The cool hours, from $35

Day 1 morning: Old Dubai on foot

Start where the city began: the wind-tower lanes of Al Fahidi, an abra across the Creek for the price of a coffee, and the Gold and Spice Souks in Deira. Our guided walk takes 3-4 hours and includes the abra, Arabic coffee or tea, dates and water. It ends in time for a late lunch and a rest before Downtown.

Day 1 evening: Burj Khalifa and the Fountain #2
Downtown Dubai One view, one free show

Day 1 evening: Burj Khalifa and the Fountain

Take the Red Line to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, go up in the late afternoon and come down for the Fountain, which plays free every 30 minutes from 6 PM. Dinner is on the Souk Al Bahar terraces or in the mall food courts. The whole evening is on foot and under cover when it is hot.

Day 2 morning: JBR Beach and Bluewaters #3
JBR, the tram, the Bluewaters footbridge Free sand, a long breakfast

Day 2 morning: JBR Beach and Bluewaters

Red Line to DMCC, tram to JBR, and the sand is free with showers and lifeguards. Breakfast on The Walk, a swim, then the 15-minute footbridge to Bluewaters for the Ain Dubai photo. Back at the hotel by early afternoon so that you are rested for the pickup.

Day 2 afternoon and night: the desert #4
Lahbab Red Dunes, 45-60 minutes from the city The one night everyone remembers, from $45

Day 2 afternoon and night: the desert

An air-conditioned 4x4 collects you at the hotel, then dune bashing, sandboarding, a camel ride and sunset, and dinner, a fire show, Tanoura and belly dance at the camp. It is 7 hours door to door, $65 with a 30-minute quad bike, with no prepayment: you agree the date on WhatsApp and pay on the day.

Swap: the Marina by sea #5
The pier behind Al Majara Tower, Dubai Marina An early flight, from $32

Swap: the Marina by sea

If you fly before noon on day 3, the desert returns too late. Swap it for the shared 1-hour yacht cruise from $32 through the Marina canal, past JBR and Bluewaters to a photo stop in front of Ain Dubai. If you are 21 or older and want a night out, the yacht party is $99 from 9 PM to 1 AM.

How the 48 hours fit together

The rule for two days is one area per half-day and no backtracking on Sheikh Zayed Road. Day 1 stays in the north-east of the city: Old Dubai in the morning, when it is cool and the souks are opening, then Downtown by metro for the view, the mall and the Fountain. Day 2 moves to the coast and ends in the desert: JBR beach in the morning, then the 4x4 collects you at your hotel in the afternoon. Both days run on the metro and one hotel pickup, so you need no taxi unless you want one.

The clock starts at 8:00 AM on day 1 and ends at 8:00 AM on day 3. If you land in the evening, rest and start the plan the next morning. The easiest base is Downtown or Business Bay, which makes day 1 a short ride; the Marina or JBR suits you better if the beach matters most. Where to stay in Dubai compares the areas, and the desert safari picks you up at either.

MorningAfternoonEvening
Day 1Old Dubai walk: Al Fahidi, the abra, the souksRest, then Burj Khalifa At the TopBurj Park, the Fountain from 6 PM, dinner at Souk Al Bahar
Day 2JBR Beach, The Walk, the Bluewaters footbridgeHotel pickup for the 7-hour desert safariAl Khayma camp: BBQ, fire show, Tanoura; back late

Two days is a taste, not the full city. If you can add a third day, the 3-day itinerary adds the Palm and a sunset yacht, and the 4-day itinerary adds Abu Dhabi. The free SB AI planner puts any of these on a map for your own dates.

Day 1, hour by hour: Old Dubai, then Downtown

Buy a Silver Nol card at your first metro station: about AED 25 including AED 19 of credit, then AED 3-7.5 per ride depending on the zones. Trains run from about 5 AM to midnight or 1 AM, so the metro also brings you home from the Fountain. Costs below are per person; our tour prices are exact and the rest are budgets to check on the day.

TimeWhat you doCost
8:30 AMMetro to Sharaf DG station on the Green Line (the old Al Fahidi station)Card about AED 25; ride AED 3-7.5
9:00 AM-1:00 PMOld Dubai: Al Fahidi lanes, the abra across the Creek, the Spice and Gold SouksGuided walk from $35; abra AED 1-2 if on your own
1:00 PMLunch in a Bur Dubai or Deira cafeteriaAbout AED 10-30
2:00 PMBack to the hotel for a rest, or the Dubai Frame in Zabeel Park (open 8 AM-9 PM, about an hour)Free, or about AED 50 for the Frame
3:45 PMRed Line to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, then the air-conditioned Metro Link bridge (10-15 minutes on foot)AED 3-7.5
4:30 PMBurj Khalifa At the Top, levels 124-125, timed ticket, daylight turning to sunsetFrom $55; more at sunset
6:00 PMBurj Park below the tower; the Fountain plays every 30 minutes from 6 PM to 11 PMFree
7:30 PMDinner on the Souk Al Bahar terraces or in a Dubai Mall food courtFood court AED 35-60; terrace AED 80-150
9:30 PMMetro or a short taxi to the hotelAED 3-7.5

Sunset is about 5:30 PM in November and December, so a 4:30 PM slot at the top gives you daylight and the lights coming on. In summer sunset is after 7 PM; move the tower to about 6:30 PM.

Our Old Dubai walking tour is 3-4 hours from $35: you meet the guide in Al Fahidi near Sharaf DG station, and the price includes the abra, Arabic coffee or tea, dates and water. The $55 version adds street-food tastings, which makes lunch. The meeting pin comes after payment, so ask us for a morning start when you book. If you would rather walk alone, the Old Dubai guide has the route and the stations.

The Museum of the Future is temporarily closed, so the Dubai Frame is the cheaper second view if you want one. For the tower itself, At the Top starts from $55 per person with us: we book the date and slot and send e-tickets on WhatsApp. Sheikh Zayed Road is jammed from 5 to 8 PM and the mall car parks fill at Fountain time, which is why this day uses the metro.

Day 2, hour by hour: the coast, then the desert

Day 2 begins in the south-west and finishes in the dunes, so keep the middle of the day light. The hotel pickup for the safari is in the afternoon and the exact time is confirmed on WhatsApp the day before, so plan to be back at your hotel by about 1:30 PM.

TimeWhat you doCost
8:00 AMRed Line to DMCC, then the tram to a JBR stopAbout AED 5-7.5 plus about AED 3
8:45 AMBreakfast on The Walk, then JBR Beach: showers and lifeguards on the sandBeach free; sunbed price varies
11:15 AMWalk the footbridge to Bluewaters for the Ain Dubai photo (about 15 minutes each way)Free
12:30 PMLunch in the shade on The Walk or at The BeachAbout AED 80-150 at a restaurant
1:30 PMBack to the hotel to shower and pack a light bagMetro and tram about AED 8-10.5
AfternoonPickup in an air-conditioned 4x4 for the desert safari$45, or $65 with the quad bike
SunsetDune bashing, sandboarding, camel ride, photos on the Lahbab Red DunesIncluded
EveningAl Khayma camp: BBQ buffet, unlimited drinks, fire show, Tanoura, belly dance; drive backIncluded; back late

The full-day desert safari takes 7 hours door to door: 45-60 minutes out to the dunes, 30-45 minutes of dune bashing, then the camp. It is from $45 per person, or $65 with the 30-minute quad bike ride, and there is no prepayment. Eat lightly 2-3 hours before pickup, wear shoes you can empty of sand, and bring a light jacket between December and February. It is not recommended for pregnant women, people with back or heart problems or infants under 3.

If the beach morning feels too plain, replace it with the Palm: a taxi from the Marina is 12-15 km and 20-30 minutes, about AED 35-50, and The View at The Palm on the 52nd floor is about AED 70-100. Keep it to one or the other, because the pickup does not wait. The JBR guide and the Palm guide cover both.

Choose your second evening: desert, yacht hour or yacht party

The desert is the default because it is the one thing you cannot do from the city. But it returns late in the evening, so it should not be the night before an early flight. Two evenings on the water fit the same slot, and they leave from the pier behind Al Majara Tower in Dubai Marina.

OptionPriceTimeBest ifHow it is booked
Desert safari$45 ($65 with quad bike)7 hours, afternoon pickup, back lateYour flight is not early on day 3WhatsApp, no prepayment
Shared yacht hourFrom $321 hour, hourly departuresEarly flight, children, low energyPrepaid; check in 20 minutes early at Level P
Yacht party (21+)$999 PM to 1 AM, boarding 8:30 PMA night out for adultsPrepaid; original ID required

Our rule is simple. If you fly before about noon on day 3, take the shared yacht hour at sunset and be in bed early. If you fly in the evening, the desert is the better night. The yacht party is a separate choice, a four-hour night out with a live DJ, a live BBQ and unlimited soft drinks, and it ends at about 1 AM.

What 48 hours costs per person

This is the plan above, added up without the hotel and meals. Third-party prices change by season, so treat them as budgets; our tour prices are fixed. Dollars convert at about AED 3.67.

Optional: yacht hour or yacht partyFrom $32; $99Instead of the desert

The core is $135 in tours and tickets plus about AED 50 (about $14) in metro fares, so about $150 per person. With the quad bike and the street-food walk it is about $190. Hotel and meals by area are in how much a Dubai trip costs.

If you land late, leave early or want more

Two days leave no slack, so decide the swaps before you go.

  • Land late on day 1: start the plan the next morning and keep the arrival evening free. If you must compress, drop Old Dubai first: the Fountain and the Burj Park view cost nothing and need no booking.
  • Early flight on day 3: take the yacht hour on day 2, not the desert, and pack the night before. The first metro trains run from about 5 AM, and Sunday starts later, so check the first train in the S'hail app or book a taxi.
  • Summer, May to September: move the beach to before 9 AM, do Old Dubai only if you can be there by 8 AM, and put the Burj Khalifa visit at sunset. The desert safari runs all year.
  • One more day: the Abu Dhabi city tour is 9 hours from an 8:00 AM hotel pickup, from $45, with no prepayment. It needs a day of its own and does not fit inside 48 hours.

FAQ

Is 48 hours enough for Dubai?

Yes for the highlights, not for the whole city. Two days cover Old Dubai, Burj Khalifa and the Fountain on day 1 and a beach morning and the 7-hour desert safari on day 2. Budget about $150 per person in tours, tickets and metro fares, plus the hotel and meals. Abu Dhabi and the sunrise balloon need more days.

What is the best order for 2 days in Dubai?

Day 1 in the north-east: Old Dubai in the cool morning, then Downtown by metro for Burj Khalifa and the Fountain. Day 2 on the coast: JBR Beach in the morning, then the desert safari from the afternoon. This order avoids driving up and down Sheikh Zayed Road and keeps the late night for the day with no morning start.

Can I fit Burj Khalifa and a desert safari into 2 days?

Yes, on different days. At the Top starts from $55 per person and takes 1.5-2 hours, so it fits an afternoon on day 1. The desert safari is from $45, takes 7 hours and has hotel pickup, so it takes the afternoon and evening of day 2. Together they are about $100 before extras.

Where should I stay for 2 days in Dubai?

Downtown or Business Bay if you want the metro and the Burj on foot; the Marina or JBR if the beach matters most. Both work with this plan, because the desert safari collects you at any Dubai hotel and the metro links the two areas in 2-3 fare zones, about AED 5-7.5 per ride.

Can I do Abu Dhabi in 2 days in Dubai?

Only by giving up a day of Dubai. Our Abu Dhabi tour is 9 hours from an 8:00 AM pickup and costs from $45, so it would replace day 1 or day 2. With 48 hours we would keep Dubai and add Abu Dhabi from the fourth day.

Do I need to book the tours before I arrive?

The desert safari and the Old Dubai walk can be arranged a few days ahead on WhatsApp; the safari has no prepayment. Burj Khalifa is a timed ticket, so book the date and slot early. The shared yacht hour and the yacht party are paid in advance because the slots sell out.

Do I need a taxi in Dubai for 2 days?

Not for this plan. The metro costs AED 3-7.5 a ride on a Silver Nol card, the tram covers JBR, and the safari picks you up. A taxi is metered at about AED 2 per km, so Downtown to the Marina is about AED 50-70, useful only when you are tired or in a hurry.
