Bluewaters is the small man-made island off JBR that carries Ain Dubai, the world's largest observation wheel, and it is the easiest island in Dubai to visit: a footbridge from The Beach at JBR puts you on it in about 10-15 minutes on foot, with no ticket, no taxi and no monorail. Go for the photographs of the wheel, a meal at the Wharf with the Marina skyline across the water, and the view back at JBR from the island's edge. The best angle of all is from the sea: our shared yacht hour from Dubai Marina stops directly in front of Ain Dubai for photos, from $32 per person.

How do you get to Bluewaters Island from JBR?

On foot over the footbridge from The Beach at JBR: about 10-15 minutes at a stroll, free, with the wheel ahead of you the whole way. From the Marina, walk or take the tram to a JBR stop first (10-20 minutes), and from Downtown a taxi is 25 km and 25-40 minutes, about AED 50-70, arriving over the road bridge.

The five things worth your time on Bluewaters

Ain Dubai, the landmark #1
The island's centrepiece, best seen from JBR Beach and from the water Photos at golden hour and after dark

Ain Dubai, the landmark

The observation wheel is the reason the island is on postcards. Treat it as a landmark rather than an activity: the classic frame is from JBR Beach with the sunbeds in front, the second is from the footbridge with the wheel filling the sky, and the third, the one on our cruises, is from the water directly below the rim.

The footbridge from JBR #2
From The Beach at JBR to the island, on foot Arriving without a taxi, a walk with views

The footbridge from JBR

The pedestrian bridge is what makes Bluewaters easy. From the Bluewaters end of The Beach at JBR you are on the island in about 10-15 minutes, with the wheel ahead of you and the JBR towers behind. Go across in the late afternoon and come back after dark, when both sides of the water are lit.

The Wharf #3
The island's waterfront row of restaurants and cafés Dinner or drinks with the Marina skyline opposite

The Wharf

The Wharf is where the island earns an evening: a line of restaurants and terraces along the water with the wheel above you and the Marina and JBR skyline across the channel. Budget for resort prices, book a table for sunset in the cooler months and walk it off on the promenade afterwards.

Dubai Harbour next door #4
The superyacht marina and cruise terminal beyond the island Looking at the big boats, superyacht charters

Dubai Harbour next door

Past Bluewaters lies Dubai Harbour, the superyacht marina and cruise terminal. It is where the largest boats in our fleet leave from, including the 140 ft Stardom for up to 100 guests, and a good walk in itself if you like looking at yachts you are not on. From the island's far edge you see the pontoons and the cruise ships.

Bluewaters from the water #5
On every cruise from the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower The photograph that needs no filter

Bluewaters from the water

Every boat that leaves Dubai Marina passes Bluewaters: the shared yacht hour stops in front of Ain Dubai for photos, the night party cruises past it lit up just after 9 PM, and a private charter can hold there as long as you like. From the sea the wheel, the island and the JBR towers line up in one frame.

Bluewaters in three sentences

Bluewaters is a small man-made island just off the JBR beachfront, joined to the mainland by a road bridge and a pedestrian footbridge. It carries Ain Dubai, the world's largest observation wheel, the Caesars Palace hotel, apartment blocks and the Wharf, a waterfront row of restaurants and cafés. Beyond it, further along the coast, sits Dubai Harbour, the superyacht marina and cruise terminal, and behind it the whole Dubai Marina and JBR skyline.

One honest note before the detail. Ain Dubai is the landmark that gives the island its silhouette, and this guide treats it as exactly that: something to photograph from the beach, from the bridge and from the water. We do not sell tickets for the wheel and we do not promise rides on it. Plan Bluewaters around the walk, the food and the views, and the wheel will be in every frame regardless.

For most visitors the island is a two-to-three-hour add-on to a JBR afternoon, or the reason to book a cruise: our shared yacht hour from Dubai Marina stops directly in front of Ain Dubai for photographs, from $32 per person, with departures every hour.

How to get to Bluewaters Island

There is no metro station on the island and none in JBR itself; the nearest Red Line stops are DMCC and Sobha Realty, the two Marina/JLT stations, and the Dubai Tram links them to JBR. The good news is that the last stretch is the best part of the journey: the footbridge from The Beach at JBR.

  • Take the Red Line to DMCC, the Marina/JLT stop: 2-3 zones from Downtown, AED 5-7.5 on a Silver Nol card.
  • Follow the signs to the Dubai Tram and ride towards JBR; the JBR stops put you at The Walk and the beach.
  • Walk along The Beach towards the Bluewaters end, where the footbridge starts; the wheel is impossible to miss.
  • Cross the bridge, about 10-15 minutes at a stroll with photo stops, and you are on the island by the Wharf.

Taxi and Nol fares are typical and change; check the meter or the RTA app before you go.

Arriving straight from the airport with luggage, a taxi to your JBR or Marina hotel first is the sensible move; our DXB to JBR guide has the options and the costs. Drivers can drop you on the island itself via the road bridge, which is the answer for anyone who cannot manage the walk in the heat.

The five things worth doing on the island

Bluewaters is small enough to walk round in an hour, so the list is short, and every item on it is free apart from what you eat and drink.

  • Photograph Ain Dubai from three angles. From JBR Beach with the sunbeds and the sea in front, from the middle of the footbridge with the wheel filling the frame, and from the water on a cruise, where the rim towers over the boat.
  • Walk the footbridge both ways. Go across in daylight for the wheel and the sea, come back after dark for the JBR towers lit up behind the beach.
  • Eat at the Wharf. The island's waterfront strip of restaurants and cafés faces the Marina skyline; budget resort prices and book a terrace table for sunset in the cooler months.
  • Do the loop of the island's edge. The promenade gives you JBR and the Marina towers on one side and, on the far side, the open sea and the pontoons of Dubai Harbour.
  • Carry on to Dubai Harbour. The superyacht marina and cruise terminal beyond the island is where the largest boats tie up, and where four of our own superyachts depart from.

The whole island is a landmark you walk through rather than an attraction you queue for, which is why it works so well as the last stop of a JBR afternoon. Our JBR guide covers the beach and The Walk side of the same walk.

Bluewaters by time of day

Morning is the quiet version: the promenade is almost empty, the light is clean on the wheel from the JBR side and the Wharf's cafés are open for breakfast with nobody in the photographs. From May to September this is the only comfortable time to do the full loop on foot.

Late afternoon and sunset is when the island earns its reputation. The sun goes down over the sea, so from JBR Beach the wheel turns from white to gold and then to a silhouette, and the Wharf's terraces fill for exactly this. Sunset is about 5:30 PM in December and about 7:10 PM in June, so time the footbridge crossing for 30-45 minutes before it.

After dark the wheel and the JBR towers are lit, and the view back across the water from the island's edge is the one most people did not expect. It is also when our yacht party passes: boarding is at 8:30 PM at the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower, the yacht leaves at 9 PM sharp, and Bluewaters and Ain Dubai are the first landmarks of the four-hour route before JBR, the Palm lagoon and Burj Al Arab.

Seeing Bluewaters from a yacht

The island was built to be looked at from the water, and every cruise that leaves Dubai Marina passes it. There are three ways to do it with us, and they suit different people and budgets.

CruiseWhenPriceWhat you get of Bluewaters
Shared yacht hourHourly departures by dayFrom $32 per personMarina canal, JBR, then a photo stop directly in front of Ain Dubai
Yacht party, 21+Daily, 9 PM-1 AM$99 per personBluewaters and Ain Dubai lit up as the first stop, then JBR, the Palm lagoon and Burj Al Arab
Private charterYour slot; sunset goes firstFrom AED 400 per hour for the boatA 2-hour route covers the Marina canal, JBR, Bluewaters and Ain Dubai; hold in front of the wheel as long as you like

The shared hour and the party are paid in full in advance because the slots sell out; private charters are confirmed with the marina on WhatsApp before any payment.

The shared hour is the easy one: check in 20 minutes before departure at Level P of Al Majara Tower, shoes off to protect the decks, an original passport or Emirates ID for everyone on board, and one hour later you have the Marina, JBR and the wheel in your photos. Children of all ages are welcome, life jackets come in every size and the crew helps with the pictures.

For a boat of your own, the 31 ft Sealine takes up to 6 guests from AED 400 per hour with a 3-hour minimum, and the 48 ft Orion takes 12 from AED 800 per hour with a 2-hour minimum; captain, crew, fuel, water, ice and soft drinks are included on every boat. The superyachts that leave from Dubai Harbour, next to the island, start with the 98 ft Mr & Mrs Smith for up to 12 guests from AED 2,800 per hour. Dubai Marina vs Dubai Harbour explains which boats leave from where and what each route shows first.

A half-day plan: the yacht, JBR, the footbridge and the Wharf

This is the afternoon we suggest to guests staying anywhere in the Marina or JBR, timed for the cooler months when sunset is around 5:30-6 PM. Shift everything an hour later in spring and autumn, and in summer move the walk to after dark.

  • Early afternoon — The shared yacht hour first: book the slot in advance (it is prepaid and the hourly departures fill), check in 20 minutes early at Level P, Al Majara Tower, and one hour later you have the wheel photographed from the water.
  • 3:45 PM — Walk or take the tram to JBR, 10-20 minutes, and spend an hour on JBR Beach: a swim in a sea that is 20-24°C from November to March, or a walk along The Beach.
  • 5:00 PM — Cross the footbridge as the light turns, 10-15 minutes with stops; the wheel is ahead and the towers behind.
  • 5:30 PM — Sunset from a Wharf terrace, then dinner. Budget resort prices and book ahead at weekends.
  • 7:30 PM — Back over the lit footbridge and along The Walk, then either bed or the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower for the 8:30 PM boarding of the yacht party, if everyone in the group is 21 or over.

If you would rather spend the day on the Palm or in Downtown and come to the island only for the evening, remember the taxi from Downtown is 25 km and 25-40 minutes, more between 5 and 8 PM, so leave by 4 PM in winter for a sunset table.

Should you stay on Bluewaters, or nearby?

Stay on the island if you want a resort feel with the city at walking distance: Caesars Palace is the island's hotel, the Wharf is your dinner every night and JBR Beach is a footbridge away. Couples who want quiet evenings and a big-name backdrop are the natural fit. We do not publish hotel rates, so compare live prices for your dates and add the Tourism Dirham fee of about AED 7-20 per room per night that every Dubai hotel charges.

Stay in JBR or Dubai Marina instead if you want choice: hotels in every price band, the tram and the metro, and the island as a walk rather than an address. Anyone who plans to use the Red Line daily should note that from Bluewaters the nearest stations, DMCC and Sobha Realty, are a tram ride plus a walk away, and that a late return from Downtown means a taxi. Our where to stay in Dubai guide compares all the areas, Dubai Marina vs JBR settles the two neighbours, and the Dubai Marina area guide covers the canal side in detail.

Wherever you sleep on this stretch of coast, our land tours collect you at the door: the full-day desert safari from $45 with hotel pickup in a 4x4 and no prepayment, the Abu Dhabi city tour from $45 with an 8:00 AM pickup and a licensed guide, and the sunrise balloon at $275 with a pre-dawn pickup anywhere in Dubai city, which sells out one to two weeks ahead. You agree the date on WhatsApp and we confirm the pickup time the same way.

FAQ

How do you get to Bluewaters Island from JBR?

On foot over the footbridge from The Beach at JBR: about 10-15 minutes at a stroll, free, with the wheel ahead of you the whole way. From the Marina, walk or take the tram to a JBR stop first (10-20 minutes), and from Downtown a taxi is 25 km and 25-40 minutes, about AED 50-70, arriving over the road bridge.

Can you ride Ain Dubai?

We treat Ain Dubai as a landmark to photograph rather than an activity, and we do not sell tickets or promise rides on it. Plan the island around the footbridge, the Wharf and the views, and see the wheel from the water on our shared yacht hour, which stops directly in front of it for photographs, from $32 per person.

Is Bluewaters Island free to visit?

Yes. Walking onto the island by the footbridge costs nothing, and so does the promenade around its edge; you pay only for what you eat and drink at the Wharf, where prices are resort level. Public transport to JBR is about AED 3 on the tram or AED 5-7.5 on the metro with a Nol card.

What is the Wharf at Bluewaters?

The island's waterfront row of restaurants and cafés, facing the Marina and JBR skyline across the water with Ain Dubai above. It is the reason to stay for sunset: terraces fill 30-45 minutes before it, so book ahead at weekends and in the cooler months, when the sun sets around 5:30 PM in December.

Can you see Ain Dubai from a yacht?

Yes, and it is the best angle. The shared yacht hour from the marina pier behind Al Majara Tower stops in front of the wheel, from $32; the 21+ yacht party passes it lit up just after 9 PM for $99; and a private charter from AED 400 per hour can hold there as long as you like on a 2-hour Marina route.

Is Bluewaters Island a good place to stay?

For couples who want a resort feel with JBR at walking distance, yes: the Wharf for dinner, the beach over the footbridge, the wheel outside the window. It suits less well if you plan to use the metro daily, since DMCC and Sobha Realty stations are a tram ride plus a walk away, or if you want a wide choice of hotels and prices, which JBR and the Marina offer.

What is Dubai Harbour, and is it part of Bluewaters?

No, it is next door: the superyacht marina and cruise terminal beyond the island, a walk along the coast from the footbridge. It is where the biggest boats tie up and where four of our superyachts depart from, including the 98 ft Mr & Mrs Smith for up to 12 guests from AED 2,800 per hour.
