Dubai Marina Shared Yacht Tour — From $32 per person

For most beach stays in Dubai, choose JBR; choose the Palm for a resort, Jumeirah for quiet and Burj Al Arab views, and Al Mamzar for calm water on a budget. JBR puts the sand a few steps from the hotel door and the Marina behind it. The Palm has private resort beaches and needs taxis. Jumeirah has free public beaches and no metro. Dubai Harbour is a new marina district, better visited than booked until you confirm a hotel's beach access.

Which is the best beach area to stay in Dubai?

JBR for most visitors: the public beach is on the doorstep, the tram and the Marina are behind it, and the airport is 35-50 minutes by taxi. The Palm suits resort holidays, Jumeirah suits quiet stays with free public beaches, and Al Mamzar is a day beach. The sea is 20-24°C from November to March.

This guide also answers:

  • Is JBR or Palm Jumeirah better for a beach holiday?
  • Are the beaches in Dubai free?
  • Is Al Mamzar a good area to stay?

The five beach areas, who each suits

JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residence) #1
Between Dubai Marina and Bluewaters First-timers, families and evenings out

JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residence)

The towers stand on the sand, with the free public JBR Beach in front and The Walk's cafes behind it. The tram links to the Red Line at DMCC and Sobha Realty, the footbridge to Bluewaters is about 15 minutes away, and our yacht pier is a tram stop or a 10-20 minute walk. The airport is 35-50 minutes by taxi.

Palm Jumeirah #2
The island off Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Resort holidays and honeymoons

Palm Jumeirah

Resort hotels with private beaches along the fronds and the crescent, Atlantis at the top and Palm West Beach on the trunk. There is no metro, only a monorail up the trunk, so taxis do most of the work: 20-30 minutes to the Marina, 25-35 to Downtown. It suits guests who plan to spend the days at the hotel.

Jumeirah (Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah 1) #3
The coast between Old Dubai and the Palm Quiet beach mornings and Burj Al Arab views

Jumeirah (Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah 1)

Low villas, free public beaches at Kite Beach and Sunset Beach, Souk Madinat Jumeirah and the Burj Al Arab on the horizon. There is no metro on the beach road, so it is a taxi district. It is about 20-30 minutes from the airport, a shorter run than from JBR or the Palm, and our water sports start from Umm Suqeim harbour here.

Al Mamzar #4
The Deira side, towards Sharjah Calm water, shade and a small budget

Al Mamzar

Al Mamzar Beach Park has several beaches on calm lagoons, lawns, pools and barbecue areas, open daily according to Dubai Municipality. It is a day beach more than a place to base yourself, so most visitors sleep in Deira, 15-20 minutes away by taxi, and come for the day with children.

Dubai Harbour #5
Between Bluewaters Island and the Palm Boat lovers, and guests with a confirmed hotel

Dubai Harbour

A marina and cruise district of residential towers on the beach. It is the departure point for four of our largest charter yachts, not for the shared cruises, and a taxi ride from JBR. We would visit it rather than choose it for a first beach stay, unless a hotel there confirms its beach access.

The short answer: which beach area to stay in

Pick JBR if you want the beach, the promenade and the evening on foot, which suits most first visits and families. Pick the Palm if the hotel is the holiday and you will leave it for dinner by taxi. Pick Jumeirah if you want quiet mornings, free public beaches and the Burj Al Arab, and are happy to use taxis. Pick Al Mamzar as a day beach for children and shade, not as a base. Treat Dubai Harbour as a place to visit until a specific hotel confirms its beach.

All five are on the coast, so none is far from the others: JBR and the Palm are 12-15 km apart, and Jumeirah sits between the Palm and Old Dubai. The difference is how you move. JBR has a tram and two metro stations nearby; the other four are taxi areas. This table compares the five on the things that change a holiday.

For a longer comparison of all districts, including Downtown and Old Dubai, see where to stay in Dubai for a first trip. This guide is only about the beach.

Public beach or hotel beach: what changes the choice

Dubai's beaches come in three kinds, and the kind matters more than the district. Public beaches such as JBR, Kite Beach and Sunset Beach are free, with showers and lifeguards, and you pay only for sunbeds. Hotel beaches, mostly on the Palm and around the Burj Al Arab, are for guests or a paid day pass. Beach clubs, at Palm West Beach and La Mer, sell day beds with a minimum spend that varies by club and by day.

If you want to walk out of the hotel and be on the sand, a JBR tower or a resort with its own beach does it. If you are staying inland and want a beach for the day, the public beaches are all a taxi away. The sea is 20-24°C from November to March and up to 33°C from May to September, when the beach works only before 9 AM and after 5 PM. Swim at flagged areas and respect a red flag, because rip currents are the one real hazard; the best beaches in Dubai guide ranks the sand itself.

JBR: the beach you can walk to from the lift

JBR is a line of towers directly on the sand. The Walk, a promenade of cafes, restaurants and shops, runs along the ground floor, The Beach is the open-air strip in front of it, and the public JBR Beach is beyond. A footbridge at the south end crosses to Bluewaters Island and Ain Dubai, about 15 minutes on foot from the middle of The Walk. The Dubai Tram stops at JBR 1 and JBR 2, and the Red Line is two stops away at DMCC and Sobha Realty.

It is the easiest base in Dubai without a plan. Swim before 9 AM, eat on The Walk, and watch the sunset from the sand. The honest downsides are distance and crowds: JBR is about 25 km and 25-40 minutes by taxi from Burj Khalifa, and in season the sunbeds nearest The Beach are gone by mid-afternoon. Beachfront rooms also cost more than the same stars inland. Our planning band is about AED 500-1,000 per room per night for a 4-star in the Marina and JBR in season, and from about AED 1,200 for a beach 5-star; check live rates for your dates.

It is also the best area for our yachts. The shared yacht tour leaves every hour from the pier behind Al Majara Tower, a tram stop or a 10-20 minute walk from JBR, from $32 per person; check-in is 20 minutes early at Level P and it is paid in advance. The JBR guide has the tram stops, the hours of the day and a sample day.

Palm Jumeirah: resort beaches and a taxi to everything

The Palm is a resort island: villas and private beaches on the fronds, resort hotels on the crescent with Atlantis at the top, and Palm West Beach on the trunk, which faces the Marina skyline across the water. It is a holiday inside the hotel. The monorail runs from the Gateway station at the base of the trunk to Atlantis in about 15 minutes, roughly AED 20-30 return, and that is the only public transport on the island.

Everything else is a taxi: 20-30 minutes to the Marina (about AED 35-50), 25-35 minutes to Downtown (about AED 50-70), 30-45 minutes to the airport (about AED 90-120). Resorts start from around AED 1,200 per room per night in season in our planning band and rise to AED 3,000 and above. Stay here if you plan days at the pool and a quiet beach, a honeymoon or a family week built around the waterpark; skip it if you want to be out every evening or to use the metro. The Palm guide covers Atlantis, The View and the monorail.

Jumeirah: villas, public beaches and the Burj Al Arab

Jumeirah is the low-rise strip between Old Dubai and the Palm. Kite Beach has space and kitesurfers, Sunset Beach has the Burj Al Arab filling the frame, and both are free with showers and lifeguards. Souk Madinat Jumeirah has the canals, the shade and the terraces facing the hotel. There is no metro on the beach road; the nearest station for the Burj Al Arab end is Mall of the Emirates, then a 10-15 minute taxi, so this is a taxi district and the quietest one on the coast.

It is also a shorter airport run than JBR or the Palm: about 20-30 minutes and AED 55-75 by taxi. Hotels are fewer and quieter, and the price range is wide, with the top end of the city around the Burj Al Arab. It suits couples, photographers and families with a taxi budget. One practical bonus: our jet ski, flyboard, parasailing, donut and wakeboard sessions meet at Umm Suqeim Fishing Harbour in Jumeirah, so the jet ski to the Burj Al Arab from $79 per jet ski is a short taxi from a Jumeirah hotel; there is no hotel pickup, so check the meeting time when you book.

Al Mamzar: the calm lagoon on the Deira side

Al Mamzar Beach Park is the one Dubai beach that is a park. Gulf News reported five beaches, swimming pools, playgrounds, bike hire and sports courts, and Dubai Municipality lists it as open every day from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Gulf News reported an entry of AED 5 per person, free for children under 2, and AED 30 per car; some guides report a separate charge for the pools, so ask at the gate. Gulf News also reported chalets, from AED 150 plus VAT for up to six people, booked through the Dubai Public Parks website. These figures can change, so check them before you go.

One caveat for mixed groups: Gulf News reported days reserved for women and children, while other guides give different days, so ask before you bring a group that includes men. The water is calmer than on the open coast, which is why it suits small children. We could not verify a list of hotels at the park gate, so treat it as a day beach and sleep in Deira, about 15-20 minutes away by taxi, with the Creek, the souks and the Green Line close to the hotel. It is the budget beach choice, because hotels in Old Dubai usually have the lowest rates in the city, from around AED 250-450 for a 3-star in season.

Dubai Harbour: new, mostly towers and boats

Dubai Harbour sits between the Palm and Bluewaters Island. An earlier report in The National described a district with a large marina, two cruise terminals and 24 residential towers, built on a beach, and it did not mention hotels. Property listings describe a private beach for residents, which is a sales claim, so do not assume that a public beach is open to you. Before you book anything here, confirm the hotel's own beach access and check what is open for your dates.

For visitors, Dubai Harbour matters mostly for the water. Four of our largest charter yachts, from 98 to 150 ft, leave from its marina, while the $32 shared cruise and the $99 yacht party leave only from Dubai Marina. If the harbour is the reason you are interested, stay in JBR or the Marina and take a taxi: it is a short ride, about AED 80-110 from the airport. The Marina vs Dubai Harbour guide compares the two departure points, and our yacht page lists the fleet.

Which beach area for whom, and how our tours work from each

This is how we would match the traveller to the area. The desert safari, the Abu Dhabi tour and the balloon collect you at any hotel in Dubai, so the beach base never limits them; only the boats and the water sports ask you to come to a harbour.

FAQ

Which is the best beach area to stay in Dubai?

JBR for most visitors: the public beach is on the doorstep, the tram and the Marina are behind it, and the airport is 35-50 minutes by taxi. The Palm suits resort holidays, Jumeirah suits quiet stays with free public beaches, and Al Mamzar is a day beach. The sea is 20-24°C from November to March.

Is JBR or Palm Jumeirah better for a beach holiday?

JBR if you want to go out every evening, because it has a tram, restaurants on The Walk and the yacht pier nearby. The Palm if you want a resort with a private beach and quiet evenings. The Palm has no metro, so taxis to the Marina cost about AED 35-50 and take 20-30 minutes.

Are the beaches in Dubai free?

Public beaches such as JBR, Kite Beach and Sunset Beach are free, with showers and lifeguards; sunbeds cost extra. Hotel beaches are for guests or a paid day pass, and beach clubs sell day beds with a minimum spend. Al Mamzar Beach Park charges an entry fee, which Gulf News reported as AED 5 per person; check before you go.

Is Al Mamzar a good area to stay?

It is better as a day trip. Al Mamzar Beach Park has several calm beaches and shade, and Dubai Municipality lists it as open from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM. We could not verify hotels at the park, so most visitors sleep in Deira, about 15-20 minutes away by taxi, where rooms are among the cheapest in the city.

Can I stay in Dubai Harbour for the beach?

Only after you confirm the hotel's beach access. The National described Dubai Harbour as a marina and cruise district with residential towers, and listings describe a private beach for residents. For a first beach stay, JBR next door is simpler, and the Marina pier is a short taxi ride away.

Which beach area is closest to the airport?

Of the areas with a fare we have checked, Jumeirah: about 20-30 minutes and AED 55-75 by taxi from DXB. The Palm is 30-45 minutes and about AED 90-120, and JBR and the Marina are 35-50 minutes and about AED 80-110. Al Mamzar is on the Deira side, the same side of the city as DXB; check the app for a live quote.

Do your tours pick up from beach hotels?

The desert safari, the Abu Dhabi tour and the sunrise balloon collect you at any hotel in Dubai, including JBR, the Palm and Jumeirah. The yacht cruises and the water sports have no hotel pickup: the yachts leave from the Marina pier behind Al Majara Tower and the water sports meet at Umm Suqeim Fishing Harbour.
