Stay in Dubai if you want the beach, the Metro, a drink with dinner and the sights on your doorstep; stay in Sharjah only if the quieter pace and the lower rate matter more than the commute. A Khaleej Times test took 62 to 100 minutes from Al Quoz to Sharjah in the evening rush, and Sharjah sells no alcohol, hotels included. Our desert safari and Abu Dhabi tour both collect from Sharjah hotels. This guide compares hotels, alcohol, traffic and beaches, and says who should choose which.

Should I stay in Sharjah or Dubai?
Stay in Dubai for a first trip: the Metro, the beach, licensed restaurants and the sights are there, and a rush-hour trip from Al Quoz to Sharjah took 62 to 100 minutes in a Khaleej Times test. Stay in Sharjah if you want a quiet, dry base, or mostly use our tours, which collect there.

Five bases compared: three in Sharjah, two in Dubai
#1
Al Noor Island and Khalid Lagoon
The lagoon area has Al Noor Island, Al Majaz Waterfront and the Corniche, and it is at its best from late afternoon. It is the usual place visitors stay in Sharjah. Expect a calm, conservative evening with no alcohol, and expect to cross to Dubai for anything else.
#2
Heart of Sharjah
The heritage quarter has Al Hisn Fort and the old town, and The National's June 2026 review of The Chedi Al Bait describes a quiet heritage-quarter stay that suits adults best. It is the Sharjah choice for culture, not for beaches, bars or Dubai sightseeing.
#3
Al Khan Beach and the aquarium
Visit Sharjah describes Al Khan Beach as a 600-metre strip with a swimming area, showers, a playground and a surf school. The Sharjah Aquarium and the Maritime Museum are about five minutes' walk away. The page does not state an entry fee or hours, so check before you go.
#4
Deira, the cheaper Dubai base
Deira is the usual cheap base on the Dubai side, with the souks, the Creek, the airport and two Metro lines. You gain a licensed evening in Dubai and a Metro to the sights, and you lose the quiet of Sharjah. Our Deira and Bur Dubai guide compares the two banks.
#5
Dubai Marina and JBR
The Marina is the far end of the city from Sharjah, and our Dubai to Sharjah guide puts a taxi between them at about 50 to 80 minutes and well over AED 100. Choose it for the beach and the evening, and do not plan to commute from Sharjah to this side.
Sharjah or Dubai: the short answer
Stay in Dubai if your plan is the Marina, Downtown, the beach or a drink with dinner; stay in Sharjah if you want a quiet base, plan to see Sharjah itself and mostly use our tours with pickup. The two cities are only 15 to 25 km apart at their centres, according to our Dubai to Sharjah guide, but the road between them is among the most crowded in the country, and that is the real price of the cheaper address.
We found no published hotel-rate comparison between the two, so we do not print hotel prices. Check current rates for your dates in both emirates, then add the cost and the time of the trips you will make into Dubai. If your flight lands at Sharjah airport, our Sharjah Airport to Dubai guide covers the first trip.
Sharjah and Dubai at a glance
The table sets out what changes when you cross the emirate line. Where a source is named, it is the page we read; the rest comes from our own guides.
| Factor | Sharjah | Dubai | Lean |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotel prices | Many visitors choose it for the lower rate; we found no published comparison, so check current rates | A wide range; Deira and Bur Dubai are the usual low-cost bases | Compare live rates |
| Alcohol | Sale or consumption is prohibited, according to Gulf News; none on a hotel property, according to The National | Only in licensed restaurants, lounges and bars, for guests aged 21 or over, according to Gulf News | Dubai |
| Metro | None; intercity buses run to Dubai | Red and Green Lines | Dubai |
| Beach | Al Khan Beach: 600 m, a swimming area and showers; fee and hours not stated | Free public beaches such as JBR and Kite Beach, with lifeguards | Dubai |
| Pace and dress | Quieter and more conservative, with shoulders and knees covered | Livelier, with more nightlife | Your choice |
| Museums and heritage | Heart of Sharjah, the museums, the Blue Souk | Al Fahidi, the souks, the Creek | Sharjah, narrowly |
| Our tours | Safari and Abu Dhabi tour collect; boats do not | Collect or meet nearby | Dubai |
Our Sharjah day trip guide lists what is worth seeing there, and it works the other way too: stay in Dubai and visit Sharjah for a day.
The commute: what the rush hour really costs
The two cities share one of the heaviest commutes in the UAE. Gulf News reported on 27 February 2026 heavy morning congestion on Al Ittihad Road (E11) from Al Nahda in Sharjah to Dubai Police General Headquarters, and a slow Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road (E311) from Muwailah towards Muhaisna, while Emirates Road was flowing smoothly that morning.
Khaleej Times measured the evening direction. Four motorists left Al Quoz in Dubai at about 4 PM on Wednesday 2 September 2026 for Sharjah, and the report, published on 4 September, gave these times. Emirates Road was fastest but added more than 25 km to the journey compared with the shortest route.
| Route | Time in the Khaleej Times test | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Emirates Road | 1 hour 2 minutes | The fastest, but much longer in distance |
| Al Ittihad Road | 1 hour 27 minutes | The shortest route; the report also mentions about 1 hour 45 minutes |
| Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road (E311) | 1 hour 40 minutes | Slow after City Centre Mirdif |
A single afternoon test on one day, from Al Quoz; your trip will differ. Check live traffic before you leave.
If both legs of a day in Dubai fall in the rush hour, that is two hours or more in a car. Our guide gives the peaks as 7 to 9 AM into Dubai and 5 to 8 PM out of it, so the way to cope is to leave Sharjah before 7 or after 9:30 in the morning and head home after 8 PM. Dubai Taxi's airport taxi page also lists an extra AED 20 when a trip passes through Sharjah, on top of the meter. Our Dubai to Sharjah guide has the bus routes and the taxi rules.
Alcohol: Sharjah is dry
Gulf News's guide to alcohol rules by emirate says Sharjah is a dry emirate where the sale or consumption of alcohol is prohibited. The National's review of a Sharjah heritage hotel, published on 2 June 2026, says there is no alcohol available on the property. Do not expect a hotel bar, a restaurant wine list or a drink on a Sharjah beach.
In Dubai, Gulf News says alcohol can only be consumed in licensed restaurants, lounges and bars, and that you must be 21 or above. So a Sharjah base means a drink with dinner is a Dubai evening with a late taxi home, and the commute rules above apply. Our alcohol laws guide explains where you can drink in Dubai. If a sunset drink matters, Sharjah is the wrong base.
Beaches and evenings: Al Khan or the Dubai coast
Visit Sharjah lists Al Khan Beach as a 600-metre strip of sand in the Al Khan area with a designated swimming area, showers, changing rooms and toilets. It has a surf school offering kayaking, parasailing, surfing and flyboarding, banana boat rides, beach volleyball and a playground with slides for smaller children. The Sharjah Maritime Museum and Sharjah Aquarium are about a five-minute walk away. The page does not state an entry fee, opening hours or swimwear rules, so check before you go; Sharjah applies the UAE's rules more conservatively than Dubai, as our Sharjah guide explains.
The Dubai coast is bigger and freer: the public beaches at JBR and Kite Beach have no entry charge, and the Marina's restaurants and our yacht pier are behind JBR. It is also the far end of the city from Sharjah. Our guide to beach areas to stay in Dubai compares them. For a beach holiday, base yourself in Dubai and visit Sharjah for a day.
Where to stay in Sharjah: what the official site lists
Visit Sharjah's accommodation page lists heritage and boutique hotels, beach hotels and waterfront resorts, city hotels and hotel apartments, tagged to three locations: Sharjah City, the Central Region and the East Coast. We would use Sharjah City as the base for Dubai day trips, because the other two locations lie outside the city. It describes hotel apartments as ideal for longer visits and families.
The National's review of The Chedi Al Bait describes a quiet stay in the heart of Sharjah's protected heritage quarter, with a direct link to Souq Al Arsa, and says the quiet suits adults best, with families who have older children and an interest in history also able to enjoy it. We do not quote room prices; check current rates for your dates.
Our tours from Sharjah: the safari and Abu Dhabi, not the boats
Staying in Sharjah does not shut you out of our programme, but not every tour collects there.
| Tour | From a Sharjah hotel | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Full-day desert safari, from $45 | Pickup included | Earlier than a Dubai pickup, because Sharjah guests are collected before Dubai guests; no prepayment; late return |
| Abu Dhabi city tour, from $45 shared | Pickup included | 8:00 AM in Dubai, earlier from Sharjah; 9 hours; no prepayment |
| Sunrise balloon, from $275 | Dubai city pickup only | Ask us on WhatsApp before booking from Sharjah |
| Shared yacht tour, from $32; yacht party, $99 | No pickup | Meet at the pier behind Al Majara Tower, Dubai Marina; the party boards at 8:30 PM and runs to 1 AM |
| Jet ski, parasailing, flyboard, donut, wakeboard | No pickup | Meet at Umm Suqeim Fishing Harbour, Jumeirah |
The full-day desert safari and the Abu Dhabi city tour are the easy big days from Sharjah; our safari from Sharjah and Ajman guide gives the pickup logic. A night on the yacht party is a poor fit for a Sharjah base: it ends at 1 AM, so plan a taxi back to Sharjah. The Old Dubai walking tour from $35 is a better half day, reached by taxi or intercity bus.
Who should stay where
A short guide to the choice:
| Traveller | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First trip, three to five nights | Dubai | The sights, the beach and the Metro, without a daily commute |
| Beach holiday | Dubai | Free public beaches and the Marina; Al Khan Beach is smaller |
| Likes a drink with dinner | Dubai | Sharjah is dry, and a late taxi home is long |
| Museums and quiet evenings | Sharjah | The heritage quarter and the lagoon, with Dubai for days out |
| Safari and Abu Dhabi are the main plans | Sharjah can work | Both collect at your hotel and the long drive is done for you |
| Tight budget, Dubai sights every day | Deira or Bur Dubai | The commute costs the saving; see our budget guide |
For the Dubai side of the choice, our Deira or Bur Dubai guide and budget areas guide compare the cheaper districts with their Metro access.
FAQ
Should I stay in Sharjah or Dubai?
Stay in Dubai for a first trip: the Metro, the beach, licensed restaurants and the sights are there, and a rush-hour trip from Al Quoz to Sharjah took 62 to 100 minutes in a Khaleej Times test. Stay in Sharjah if you want a quiet, dry base, or mostly use our tours, which collect there.
Can you drink alcohol in Sharjah?
No. Gulf News says Sharjah is a dry emirate where the sale or consumption of alcohol is prohibited, and The National's June 2026 hotel review says there is none on the property. In Dubai alcohol is served only in licensed venues, for guests aged 21 or over.
How long is the commute between Sharjah and Dubai?
At rush hour, an hour or more each way. A Khaleej Times test in the Dubai-to-Sharjah evening rush took 1 hour 2 minutes on Emirates Road, 1 hour 27 minutes on Al Ittihad Road and 1 hour 40 minutes on E311. Gulf News reported heavy morning congestion on Al Ittihad Road.
Is it cheaper to stay in Sharjah than Dubai?
Many visitors choose Sharjah to save on the room, but we found no published comparison, so check current rates for your dates. Then add the taxi fare, an extra AED 20 listed by Dubai Taxi when a trip passes through Sharjah, and the hours you will spend in traffic.
Is there a Metro from Sharjah to Dubai?
No. Dubai's Metro stops inside Dubai, and the way across is an intercity bus, a taxi or a car. The bus routes leave from Union, Al Ghubaiba and Deira City Centre; our Dubai to Sharjah guide gives the current options and the rush-hour advice.
Are there beaches in Sharjah?
Yes. Visit Sharjah lists Al Khan Beach, a 600-metre strip with a swimming area, showers, changing rooms and a playground, and also lists beaches at Al Heera, Al Hamriyah, Khorfakkan and Kalba. It does not state entry fees or hours, so check before you go.
Do your tours pick up from Sharjah hotels?
Yes for two of them. The full-day desert safari from $45 and the Abu Dhabi city tour from $45 collect from Sharjah hotels, earlier than from Dubai, with no prepayment. The yacht tours and water sports meet in Dubai and have no pickup.
