Private vs Shared Desert Safari in Dubai: Which One to Book

A shared 4x4 at $45 per person or a private 4x4 for your group: what changes (intensity, pace, company), what stays the same (7 hours, the camp) and who should pick which.

Shared 4x4: from $45 per person, $65 with the quad bikePrivate 4x4: priced per car, quoted on WhatsAppSame 7 hours, same dunes, same Al Khayma camp
Full-Day Desert Safari in Dubai — From $45 per person

Book the shared safari at $45 per person if you are 1-3 people and happy with company; ask for a private 4x4 if you are a family with small children, a group that fills a car, or you want the dune bashing set for you alone. Both versions of our full-day desert safari are the same 7 hours in the Lahbab Red Dunes — the same dune bashing, camel ride, sunset and evening at Al Khayma camp — with hotel pickup and no prepayment either way. What changes is who is in the car, who sets the pace and how the price is counted.

How much does a private desert safari cost compared with a shared one?

The shared full-day safari is $45 per person, or $65 with the 30-minute quad bike, on a 4x4 with other guests. A private 4x4 is priced per car for your party and quoted on WhatsApp for your group size and date; the per-person cost falls as the group grows, and a car of 6 comes closest to the shared rate. Everything in the day — dunes, camel, sunset, Al Khayma camp — is the same.

This guide also answers:

  • How many people share a 4x4 on a desert safari?
  • Is the camp private on a private desert safari?
  • Can I ask for gentler dune bashing on a shared safari?

The two formats, and what does not change

Shared 4x4, from $45 per person #1
Usually up to 6 guests per car Solo travellers, couples, budgets, the social version

Shared 4x4, from $45 per person

The classic. An air-conditioned 4x4 collects you at your hotel and may pick up one or two other parties on the way; the driver sets the dune bashing intensity for the whole car. The price is per person, the programme is complete, and it is the version most of our guests book.

Private 4x4 for your party #2
Priced per car, quoted on WhatsApp Families, groups of 4-6, anyone who wants the pace set for them

Private 4x4 for your party

The same day with the car to yourselves: your own driver, the intensity dialled to your group, photo stops when you want them, and a pickup route with nobody else on it. The camp is still shared. Tell us the group size and the date on WhatsApp and we quote the car.

The quad bike and buggy upgrades #3
$65 quad bike, $240 dune buggy, per person Anyone who wants to drive, on either format

The quad bike and buggy upgrades

These are not private safaris, though the $240 buggy is sometimes mistaken for one. Both are 30-minute self-drive sessions added to the day, priced per person, and available whether your 4x4 is shared or private. No driving licence is needed; under-16s ride accompanied by an adult.

Al Khayma camp, shared either way #4
Air-conditioned tents, dinner and three shows Understanding what a private car does not buy

Al Khayma camp, shared either way

A private 4x4 does not mean a private camp. The evening — BBQ buffet, unlimited soft drinks, henna, shisha, fire show, Tanoura and belly dance — happens at the same camp with other guests on both formats. That is part of the atmosphere, and it is the same evening whichever car brought you.

Private or shared: the verdict

Go shared if you are one to three people, you are fine sharing a car with strangers for the drive and the dune bashing, and $45 per person matters. Go private if you are a family with young children, a group of 4-6 that fills a car anyway, a couple who wants the sunset stop without an audience in the back seat, or anyone who needs the dune bashing gentle and does not want to negotiate it with five other passengers.

Whichever you choose, you get our full-day desert safari: hotel pickup in Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman, 30-45 minutes of dune bashing on the Big Red, sandboarding, the camel ride, sunset, and the evening at Al Khayma camp with dinner and shows. No prepayment on either — you agree the date on WhatsApp and pay on the day.

The sections below go through what is identical, what a private car actually changes, the cost logic by group size, and who should choose which.

What is the same on both

Most of the day is identical, which is the first thing to understand before paying for a private car. The route, the dunes, the activities, the camp and the clock do not change.

  • About 7 hours door to door, with an afternoon pickup and a late-evening return.
  • The Lahbab Red Dunes, 45-60 minutes from most Dubai hotels, longer from Sharjah and Ajman.
  • 30-45 minutes of dune bashing with a licensed English-speaking driver, then sandboarding, the camel ride and falcon photos at sunset.
  • Al Khayma camp: air-conditioned tents, a BBQ buffet with vegetarian and gluten-free options, unlimited water, soft drinks, tea and Arabic coffee, henna, the shisha station, and the fire show, Tanoura and belly dance.
  • The rules: not recommended for pregnant women, back or heart conditions or infants under 3; under-12s ride the camel with an adult; under-16s ride the quad bike accompanied by an adult.
  • The booking: WhatsApp, no prepayment, free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup.

What changes with a private 4x4

Seven things, and they matter more to some travellers than to others. The intensity line is the one that decides most bookings.

The campSharedShared — the same tents, buffet and shows

In a shared car the driver reads the group, and a family with a nervous 6-year-old sitting behind two friends who want the full rollercoaster gets a compromise. In a private car there is no compromise to make, in either direction: the driver can attack the dunes for a car of adrenaline seekers or turn the same 30-45 minutes into a slow drive over the ridges for grandparents.

The cost maths by group size

Shared pricing is linear: $45 a head, $65 a head with the quad bike. Private pricing is per vehicle, so the per-person cost falls as the group grows, and a full car of 6 is where it comes closest to the shared price. We quote the private 4x4 on WhatsApp for your exact group and date rather than printing a number here, because it varies with the season and the group.

GroupShared totalShared with the quad bikePrivate 4x4
1 person$45$65Rarely worth it — the car is priced for a group
2 people$90$130The price of privacy at sunset; ask us for the quote
4 people$180$260Worth asking — one family fills most of the car
6 people$270$390Closest to the shared price per head, and you fill the car

A reference point for how our private pricing works: the Abu Dhabi city tour is $45 per person shared or $245 for a private VIP car for up to 7, so the private car costs less than six shared seats. The desert safari's private rate is quoted separately.

The quad bike and buggy sessions are added per person on either format, so tell us who is riding when you ask for the quote and it comes back as one number for the car. Everything else — dinner, drinks, shows, pickup — is included on both formats, and there is nothing to pay at the camp.

Who should go shared

The shared safari is the right call for more people than the private one, and it is the version we book most. It suits:

  • Solo travellers and couples — the car fills with other guests, the price stays at $45, and the sunset stop is social rather than silent. A couple who wants a sunset to themselves has the private sunset yacht for that on another evening.
  • Budget-minded first-timers — nothing is missing from the $45 programme; is the safari worth it lists what it includes, piece by piece.
  • Anyone who likes the full-intensity ride — a shared car of adults usually gets it, because that is what most of the car asked for.
  • Groups of 3 — a private car for three is the least efficient version of the maths; three seats at $45 is $135 and the car is still half empty.

Who should go private

A private 4x4 is worth asking about in six situations. In each of them the thing you are buying is control of the car, not a different desert.

  • Families with young children — the intensity is set for your children, the front seat is yours, and a tired child can sleep on the way back without disturbing strangers. The age rules are in the safari with kids.
  • Seniors and anyone with a mild concern about the ride — a private driver can make the dune bashing a slow scenic drive with the same views; anyone with a back or heart condition should still not book. The safari for seniors has the alternatives.
  • Groups of 4-6 — you fill the car anyway, so what you gain is the pace and the pickup route, and what you lose is other people.
  • Couples on an occasion — a proposal on the ridge at sunset is easier without four strangers filming it.
  • Photographers — extra stops on the ridges before the golden-hour convoy arrives; bring a sealed bag for the camera, and the DCAA permit if you fly a drone.
  • Guests in Sharjah and Ajman — a private car skips the other pickups on an already longer route; see desert safari from Sharjah and Ajman for the timings.

The $65 and $240 options are not private safaris

The most common confusion: is the $240 option the private one? No. Our safari price comparison has three price levels — $45 classic, $65 with a 30-minute quad bike and $240 with a 30-minute dune buggy — and all three are per person on the shared 4x4. They buy a machine to drive for 30 minutes, not a car to yourselves for 7 hours.

The two decisions are independent. You can book a shared car with the quad bike, a private car with nobody driving anything, or a private car of six with two riders on quads and four watching from the dune. Tell us on WhatsApp who wants to ride and we build the quote around it.

The decision by traveller, in one table

If you want the answer without the reasoning, find your row. The right-hand column is what we would tell you on WhatsApp.

You are…BookWhy
Travelling soloShared, $45The car is priced per seat and the sunset stop is better with company
A coupleShared, $45 eachThe full programme for $90; go private only for an occasion you want to keep to yourselves
A couple who wants to driveShared with the quad bike, $65 eachThe add-on is per person, so the format does not need to change
A family with children under 8Private 4x4The intensity is set for your children and the front seat is yours
A family with teenagersShared, with quads for the teens at $65Under-16s ride with an adult; the shared car usually runs at the intensity teenagers want
A group of 3Shared, $135 in totalThree seats is the least efficient private booking
A group of 4-6 friendsPrivate 4x4, quoted for the carYou fill the car anyway; ask us for the quote and compare it with $45 a head
Grandparents in the groupPrivate 4x4, or the Abu Dhabi dayA slow scenic drive over the dunes is only possible when the whole car wants it; back and heart conditions rule the safari out entirely

A mixed party — grandparents, parents and teenagers — is the one case where two cars make sense: a private 4x4 taking the slow route and a shared car for the teenagers with the quad bike, meeting again at the camp for dinner and the shows. Tell us the ages and we set it up.

How to book either, and the private version of the rest of your trip

Booking either format is one WhatsApp message: date, hotel, group size, whether you want the car to yourselves and who wants the quad bike. We confirm the pickup time, and you pay on the day. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. Pickup and drop-off are included from hotels and apartments in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman.

The same shared-or-private choice runs through our other days. The Abu Dhabi city tour is $45 per person shared or $245 for a private VIP car for up to 7 with a flexible schedule; Abu Dhabi private vs shared is the same comparison for that day. On the water, the 1-hour shared yacht tour from $32 is the shared version and a private charter from AED 400 per hour is the private one — the 31 ft Sealine takes 6 guests for a 3-hour minimum with captain, crew, fuel, water, ice and soft drinks included, confirmed with the marina before you pay. The sunrise balloon at $275 is a shared basket by nature, and it sells out 1-2 weeks ahead.

FAQ

How much does a private desert safari cost compared with a shared one?

The shared full-day safari is $45 per person, or $65 with the 30-minute quad bike, on a 4x4 with other guests. A private 4x4 is priced per car for your party and quoted on WhatsApp for your group size and date; the per-person cost falls as the group grows, and a car of 6 comes closest to the shared rate. Everything in the day — dunes, camel, sunset, Al Khayma camp — is the same.

How many people share a 4x4 on a desert safari?

Usually up to 6 guests plus the driver, made up of your party and one or two others collected on the way. The driver sets the dune bashing intensity for the whole car and eases off if anyone asks. If you are 4-6 people you fill most of the car already, which is when a private 4x4 starts to make sense.

Is the camp private on a private desert safari?

No. A private 4x4 gives you the car, the driver and the pace to yourselves; the evening at Al Khayma camp — BBQ buffet, unlimited soft drinks, henna, fire show, Tanoura and belly dance in air-conditioned tents — is shared with other guests on both formats. It is the same camp, the same buffet and the same shows.

Can I ask for gentler dune bashing on a shared safari?

Yes. The licensed driver adjusts the 30-45 minute session to the group, and a request for a calmer drive is honoured; a car with children or nervous passengers gets a gentler ride by default. What a shared car cannot do is run at full intensity and slowly at the same time, which is the case for going private when your own group is split.

Is the $240 desert safari option a private tour?

No. The $240 option is the full-day safari with a 30-minute dune buggy session, priced per person on the shared 4x4; $65 is the same with a quad bike. Both are self-drive add-ons available on either the shared or the private format. A private 4x4 is a separate request, quoted per car on WhatsApp.

Is a private desert safari worth it for a family?

For a family with young children, usually yes: the intensity is set for your children alone, the front seat is yours, the pickup goes straight from your hotel, and a child asleep on the 45-60 minute drive back disturbs nobody. A family of 4-6 fills most of a 4x4 anyway. The under-3 rule still applies — the safari is not recommended for infants.

Do private and shared safaris have the same pickup and payment terms?

Yes. Both include hotel pickup and drop-off in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman in an air-conditioned 4x4, both are agreed on WhatsApp with no prepayment and paid on the day, and both can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before pickup. The only difference is that the private car is quoted for your group rather than priced per seat.
