Our Dubai kayaking guide lists single kayaks at about AED 60 an hour and doubles at about AED 120, with a drive of 1 to 1.5 hours from Dubai. It is a reservoir, so it has scenery and still water but no mangroves. The season runs from October to April, and the mornings are calmest.

Dubai's own mangroves are a protected sanctuary with viewing hides, not a paddling route. It is the easy way to see flamingos and other waders in Dubai, but you watch from the shore. If you want to be on the water among mangroves, Abu Dhabi or Umm Al Quwain is the answer.

Mangrove kayaking in Abu Dhabi: the short answer

Visit Abu Dhabi lists a guided mangrove kayak tour at AED 150, with a low-tide or high-tide option, lasting 1.5 to 2 hours. The park is Mangrove National Park, protected by the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi, on the northerly shore of the city near Reem Island. Visit Abu Dhabi names three licensed operators, Seahawk Water Sports, Noukhada and Al Mahara Diving, and says you can kayak, stand-up paddle or take a private boat tour through the channels.

Go at high tide. Visit Abu Dhabi says the best time to kayak is when there is a high tide, so check before venturing out, and warns that navigation may be difficult in some seasons. The rest of this guide explains how the tide, the season and your starting point in Dubai or Abu Dhabi change the plan.

Prices are listed by the operator and change by date, group and type of tour, so confirm before you book. The figures below were read in early November 2026.

Operators named by Visit Abu Dhabi: Seahawk Water Sports, Noukhada and Al Mahara Diving. Visit Abu Dhabi says operators are licensed and ecologically responsible.

Noukhada's own site says its tours suit beginners and children above 8, and an article on its site says groups are limited to 12 to reduce disturbance. Book on the operator's own website rather than through a street seller, and read our Dubai kayaking guide for the prices at Hatta Dam, Umm Al Quwain and the Palm.

Tides and season: when to paddle

Tide matters more than the time on the clock. A Noukhada article says to go at high tide for deeper water and easier access, and that low tide exposes mud and can block channels. A low-tide tour is offered too, as Visit Abu Dhabi lists both options, but with low water exposing mud and blocking channels a high-tide slot gives the fuller paddle. Ask the operator which slot matches the tide on your date, and expect the slot to move from day to day.

The season is just as important. Noukhada lists the following temperatures and advice, and Visit Abu Dhabi says the birds change with the season.

MonthsTypical temperatureAdvice
November to March20-28°CPeak season and peak bird season; book ahead
April to June30-38°CEarly morning only
July to September38-45°CSunrise only; very hot
October28-35°CA good transition month

Temperatures and advice as given by Noukhada on its own site; the migratory birds are most numerous in winter.

What you see on the water

Visit Abu Dhabi says the park has channels to explore, mangroves up to 15 feet high, and more than 60 bird species, including greater flamingos and western reef herons. It lists crabs, turtles, fish, foxes, dugongs and dolphins among the wildlife. Noukhada's own site adds crab plovers, bluespotted ribbontail rays, green turtles and mudskippers. An article on Noukhada's site says Abu Dhabi has over 3,000 hectares of mangroves, and the park is only part of that.

Be realistic about it. A two-hour paddle in a group is calm and quiet, not thrilling. You will see birds, roots, crabs and small fish most reliably, and you may see a turtle or a ray. Dugongs and dolphins are listed for the area, but we would not plan a tour around seeing them. If you want speed instead, our wakeboarding session in Dubai is the opposite kind of water day.

What to wear and bring

Noukhada's guidance on its own site is practical, and it matches what we would tell a guest:

  • Quick-dry layers, not cotton, and a change of clothes for afterwards.
  • A hat, sunglasses with a strap and a long-sleeved rash guard.
  • Reef-safe mineral sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle.
  • A dry bag or waterproof pouch for your phone and keys.
  • Respect for the wildlife: do not feed the birds, keep your voice low, stay on the marked route and take your rubbish with you.

Our Dubai kayaking guide also suggests shoes that can get wet and insect repellent for mangrove trips.

Booking and meeting points

Book the slot first and plan the day around it, not the other way round. Visit Abu Dhabi lists Noukhada's booking as online through the operator's own site and gives the departure point only as various locations in Abu Dhabi, so confirm the exact meeting point and the start time in writing. Because the tours are listed as low-tide or high-tide, the start time depends on the tide, and a slot that is convenient on one day may not be on the next.

  • Check the tide slot for your date and ask which of the low-tide and high-tide tours is running.
  • Confirm the meeting point, because Visit Abu Dhabi lists the departure only as various locations.
  • Ask what is included: Noukhada lists the kayak, paddle, life jacket, guide and safety briefing.
  • Check the age rule: Noukhada describes the tour as suitable for children above 8.
  • Leave a margin. From Dubai the drive is about 1.5 to 2 hours each way, so for a morning slot leave early or stay the night before.

Is it worth it from Dubai?

Honestly, it is worth it if mangroves are a reason for your trip and not if you are only looking for a good paddle. Our Dubai to Abu Dhabi guide puts the drive at about 1.5 to 2 hours each way, and the kayak tour adds 1.5 to 2 hours on top of getting changed and finding the meeting point. That is a full day on its own, and it does not combine with our 9-hour Abu Dhabi city tour, which does not include paddling.

There are three sensible ways to do it. Stay a night so the tour is an early start rather than the end of a long drive; our where to stay in Abu Dhabi guide compares the areas. Take a bus or taxi to Abu Dhabi for a day built around the kayak slot, using getting around Abu Dhabi for the local part. Or make it the second day of a two-day visit after the city sights, as in our Abu Dhabi 2-day itinerary.

If the mangroves are only a nice extra, Hatta Dam gives easier logistics from Dubai, and our Hatta day trip guide shows what else fits there.

Do I need kayaking experience?

No. Noukhada's own site calls its tours suitable for beginners, and the kayak, paddle, life jacket, guide and safety briefing are supplied. It describes the tour as suitable for children above 8.
