The six most romantic things to do, ranked

The sunrise balloon #1
Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, pre-dawn pickup The morning you remember, $275 each

The sunrise balloon

Pre-dawn pickup from any Dubai hotel, the envelopes inflating in the dark, then 40-70 minutes at 2,000-4,000 feet over the reserve with oryx and gazelles below and the Hajar Mountains on the horizon. Breakfast at a Bedouin camp, a camel ride and a falcon photo after landing; 4-5 hours door to door, 30% deposit, sells out one to two weeks ahead.

A private sunset yacht #2
Dubai Marina, the pier behind Al Majara Tower A boat of your own, from AED 400 per hour

A private sunset yacht

A 31-40 ft boat for two from AED 400 per hour with captain, crew, fuel, water, ice and soft drinks included, 3-hour minimum: the Marina canal, JBR, Ain Dubai and a swim stop in the Palm lagoon before the sun goes down. Bring your own drinks; cake or a live BBQ can be added in advance. Sunset is the slot to book first.

Dinner in the desert #3
Lahbab Red Dunes, Al Khayma camp Sunset on the dunes, from $45 each

Dinner in the desert

The full-day safari puts the two of you on a red dune at sunset after the dune bashing and sandboarding, with the camel ride and falcon photos as the sand turns gold, then dinner at Al Khayma camp: BBQ buffet, henna, shisha, the fire show and Tanoura in air-conditioned tents. Hotel pickup, no prepayment, $65 with the quad bike.

An evening on the Palm #4
Palm Jumeirah: The View, West Beach, The Pointe Sunset from 52 floors, about AED 70-100

An evening on the Palm

The sunset slot at The View at The Palm shows the fronds and the crescent spread out below with Atlantis on the horizon; then the beach promenade at Palm West Beach facing the Marina skyline, or The Pointe for the free Palm Fountain shows in the evening. Tram and monorail from the Marina, or a 20-30 minute taxi.

Rooftop views and the Fountain #5
Downtown, the Marina and JBR The skyline with a drink, 21+

Rooftop views and the Fountain

Licensed hotel rooftops in Downtown, the Marina and JBR are 21+ and smart casual, with Ain Dubai lit on Bluewaters or Burj Khalifa across the lake. The free version is the Dubai Fountain every 30 minutes from about 6 PM, watched from Burj Park; the paid deck is At the Top from $55 per person with us, more at sunset.

Old Dubai by abra at dusk #6
The Creek, Al Fahidi and Al Seef The cheapest romantic hour, AED 1-2

Old Dubai by abra at dusk

The wooden abra crosses the Creek between Bur Dubai and Deira in a few minutes for AED 1-2 each, and at dusk the dhows are lit and the water is still. Walk the lanes of Al Fahidi first, cross to the Gold and Spice souks, come back on the boat and finish with dinner on the water at Al Seef. Green Line to Sharaf DG station (formerly Al Fahidi).

The romantic shortlist, and what it costs for two

Three things in Dubai are romantic in a way nothing at home can copy: the desert at sunrise from a balloon, the skyline at sunset from your own boat, and dinner on the dunes after dark. Everything else on the list, the Palm, the rooftops, the Fountain and Old Dubai by abra, is a good evening that costs little or nothing and fits around them. The three headline experiences cost $550, from AED 1,200 and $90 for two respectively, and the first two sell out first, so they are the bookings to make before the hotel.

The table is the shortlist with real prices for two; the rest of the guide is each experience in detail, then a three-day plan and the rules couples ask about.

The sunrise balloon: the morning couples remember

Nothing else in Dubai is this quiet. The sunrise hot air balloon collects you at the hotel before dawn, anywhere in Dubai city, and drives you out to the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, where you watch the envelopes inflate, get the briefing from the GCAA-licensed pilots and lift off as the sky turns from grey to gold. The flight lasts 40-70 minutes at 2,000-4,000 feet: gazelles, oryx and camels below, the Hajar Mountains on the horizon, other balloons drifting alongside, and Wi-Fi in the basket if you want to send the sunrise home.

After landing a vintage Land Rover or SUV takes you to a private Bedouin camp for a gourmet breakfast with veg and non-veg options, a short camel ride and a falcon photo, and every guest receives an electronic flight certificate signed by the pilot. The whole outing is 4-5 hours, so you are back at the hotel before most guests have finished breakfast, with the day still ahead of you.

It is $275 per person, a 30% deposit confirms the flight, and the baskets sell out one to two weeks ahead, so book it first. The season runs roughly from September or October to May; summer flights depend on the weather, so ask us. It is not suitable for children under 7, guests over 80, pregnant women or anyone with serious heart or back issues, and guests over 120 kg may be charged an extra fee. If the wind cancels the flight, you get a full refund or a new date. Bring layers and closed shoes: the desert at dawn is cold. Sunrise balloon for couples has the full morning, and if there is a ring in your pocket, read proposing on the balloon for the timing and what we can arrange.

A private sunset yacht for two

The second most romantic thing in Dubai is having a boat to yourselves for the hour the sky changes. Our private charters leave from the marina lounge at Al Majara Tower, Dubai Marina, with the captain, crew, fuel, water, ice and soft drinks included in the hourly rate, and for two people the small boats are the right size: the 31 ft Sealine or the 35 ft Uno from AED 400 per hour with a 3-hour minimum, so AED 1,200 for the whole boat for a sunset run. If you want a cabin and a proper deck to lie on, the 48 ft Orion is AED 800 per hour with a 2-hour minimum.

Three hours is the sweet spot: the Marina canal, JBR and Bluewaters with Ain Dubai, then into the Palm Jumeirah lagoon for a swim stop in daylight before the sun goes down behind the crescent. Bring your own drinks (alcohol for guests of legal drinking age, 21+) and dry snacks; cakes, Arabic platters, seafood and a live BBQ with a chef can be added in advance. Sunset is the most requested slot in the fleet, so it is the one to book first: send us the date, the hours and the occasion on WhatsApp, we check the yacht with the marina and confirm the time and the total before you pay anything.

The rules to know: everyone carries a copy of a passport or Emirates ID on their phone, shoes come off before boarding, a security pre-authorisation of AED 2,000-15,000 depending on the yacht is held on a card at check-in and released after the trip, and swimming closes around 7 PM in summer and 5 PM in winter. If the budget says shared, the 1-hour shared yacht from $32 a seat does the same skyline at sunset with a crew that takes couple photos on request. And if the boat is where the question gets asked, proposal on a yacht covers the backdrop, the timing and keeping it private.

Dinner in the desert

The third evening is the one under the stars. The full-day desert safari collects you at the hotel in an air-conditioned 4x4, drives 45-60 minutes to the Lahbab Red Dunes and gives you the afternoon on the sand: 30-45 minutes of dune bashing (the driver adjusts the intensity to the car, so say if you want it gentle), sandboarding, then the camel ride and the falcon photos as the dunes turn gold. The sunset is the photograph of the trip, and the couple-on-a-dune shot is the one everyone takes home.

After dark, Al Khayma camp: air-conditioned tents, a BBQ buffet with vegetarian and gluten-free dishes, unlimited water, soft drinks, tea and Arabic coffee, henna, a shisha station, and the fire show, Tanoura and belly dance before the drive back. From $45 per person, $65 with the 30-minute quad bike ride, hotel pickup in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman, and no prepayment: you agree the date on WhatsApp and pay on the day. Bring a light jacket from December to February; the desert cools fast after sunset. Romantic Dubai under $100 pairs this evening with the shared sunset yacht for a two-night budget.

An evening on the Palm

Palm Jumeirah is the resort evening. Start at The View at The Palm on the 52nd floor of The Palm Tower for the sunset slot (about AED 70-100 each; we can book it on request on WhatsApp a few days ahead), where the fronds and the crescent spread out below you and Atlantis sits on the horizon. Then down to Palm West Beach, the beach promenade that faces the Marina skyline, or across to The Pointe for the free Palm Fountain shows in the evening with Atlantis lit across the water.

Getting there: the tram from the Marina to the Palm Jumeirah stop and the monorail up the trunk (about AED 20-30 return), or a taxi, about 20-30 minutes and AED 35-50 from the Marina, 25-35 minutes and AED 50-70 from Downtown. From the sea the Palm is the 3-hour private charter route above, and the crescent hotels and Atlantis The Palm from the open water are the 4-hour version.

Rooftop views and the Fountain

Dubai's skyline was built for rooftops. The licensed hotel rooftops in Downtown, the Marina and JBR are 21+, smart casual and the easiest date in the city: the Marina towers lit from above, Ain Dubai lit on Bluewaters, or Burj Khalifa across Burj Lake. Alcohol is served only in licensed venues, so the hotel rooftop is the bar; there is no drinking in public places.

The free version is just as good. The Dubai Fountain plays every 30 minutes from about 6 PM on Burj Lake with the 828 m tower behind it, and Burj Park across the water is the quiet place to watch it. For the paid deck, At the Top on Burj Khalifa starts from $55 per person with us (SKY on Level 148 from $115) and charges more at sunset; Sky Views on the Address Sky View is cheaper and keeps the Burj in the frame. Best sunset spots in Dubai ranks the beaches, decks and boats by month.

Old Dubai by abra at dusk

The cheapest romantic hour in the city costs AED 1-2 each: the abra, the wooden water taxi that crosses the Creek between Bur Dubai and Deira in a few minutes, taken at dusk when the dhows are lit and the water is still. Walk the lanes of Al Fahidi first, cross to the Gold Souk and the Spice Souk, come back on the boat and finish with dinner at a table on the water at Al Seef, lantern-lit along the Creek. Green Line to Sharaf DG; the whole evening is on foot and by boat, and it is the one to do on the night you land if you arrive in the afternoon.

A three-day plan for couples, and the rules

If you have three days, this is the order that works:

  • Day 1: the balloon at dawn (back by mid-morning), a slow afternoon at the pool, then the Fountain from Burj Park and a Downtown rooftop from 6 PM.
  • Day 2: the desert safari from the afternoon pickup to the late-evening drop-off, with nothing else planned that day.
  • Day 3: the Palm in the afternoon, then the private sunset boat or the shared hour from the Marina, and dinner on Marina Walk.
  • With more days: the Abu Dhabi day for the Grand Mosque and the Corniche, and Old Dubai by abra at dusk.

The honeymoon itinerary stretches the same pieces over five days with the hotels by area, and the free SB AI planner lays them out on the map with our tours in place.

The rules for couples are short. Holding hands is fine; anything more in public is not. Shoulders and knees covered in malls, Old Dubai and mosques, swimwear only at the beach and the pool. Alcohol from 21, only in licensed venues and on licensed boats. The balloon and the boats need a passport or ID. The best months are November to March, 20-30°C by day and 14-20°C at night with the sea at 20-24°C; that is also when the balloon season and the sunset slots are busiest, so book the balloon and the sunset boat before anything else.

FAQ

What are the best things to do in Dubai for couples?

The sunrise hot air balloon ($275 each, 40-70 minutes over the desert, breakfast after), a private sunset yacht from the Marina (from AED 400 per hour for a boat of your own, 3-hour minimum on the small boats), dinner at a desert camp on the full-day safari (from $45 each), the sunset from The View at The Palm, a licensed rooftop over the skyline, and the abra across the Creek at dusk for AED 1-2.

How much does a private yacht for two cost in Dubai?

From AED 400 per hour for a 31-40 ft boat with the captain, crew, fuel, water, ice and soft drinks included, with a 3-hour minimum, so about AED 1,200 for a sunset run with a swim stop in the Palm lagoon. A 48 ft yacht with a cabin is AED 800 per hour with a 2-hour minimum. Send the date and hours on WhatsApp; we confirm the boat with the marina before you pay.

Is the hot air balloon in Dubai romantic?

It is the most romantic morning in the city: pre-dawn pickup, 40-70 minutes drifting over the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve at 2,000-4,000 feet as the sun comes up, then breakfast at a Bedouin camp with a camel ride and a falcon photo. $275 per person, 30% deposit, sold out one to two weeks ahead, season roughly September or October to May.

Can you propose on a yacht or a balloon in Dubai?

Yes to both. On a private charter the captain can hold the boat in front of the Palm or Burj Al Arab at sunset, and a cake or platters can be added in advance; on the balloon the moment is usually at first light in the basket, with the other guests as your witnesses. Tell us on WhatsApp when you book and we will help with the timing.

Can couples hold hands in Dubai?

Yes. Holding hands is fine; kissing and anything beyond it in public is not, and the rule is enforced in malls, on the beach and in the street. Dress with shoulders and knees covered away from the beach and the pool. Keep it to holding hands anywhere outside your room and you will have no trouble; Dubai is one of the safest cities for tourists at any hour.

What is the most romantic time of year to visit Dubai?

November to March: 20-30°C by day, 14-20°C at night, sea at 20-24°C and the balloon season in full swing. Sunset is about 5:30 PM in December, so the sunset yacht slot is early and the evening is long. Book the balloon one to two weeks ahead and the sunset boat first; the last two weeks of December and the Eid holidays sell out early.

Is the desert safari good for couples?

Yes, especially at sunset: the camel ride and the falcon photos as the dunes turn gold, then dinner and the shows at Al Khayma camp under the stars. From $45 each with hotel pickup and no prepayment; ask for a gentler dune bashing session if one of you is not a fan. Not recommended for pregnant women or anyone with back or heart problems.
